I see where Kentucky-born movie star Ashley Judd continues to talk about running for the U.S. Senate against Mitch McConnell. McConnell may be in a bit of political trouble, and as Al Franken has demonstrated, it is quite possible for a Hollywood celebrity to perform credibly in the Senate. But Minnesota ain’t Kentucky, and in this case, Judd has as much chance of becoming a U.S. senator as McConnell has of being a Hollywood leading man.

———————————-
Cyclist Lance Armstrong is scheduled to appear next week on Oprah, where he may finally, publicly confess to years of performance-enhancing drug use on the way to seven Tour de France titles, all of which have been stripped from him.
The American people will supposedly forgive almost anything after a public confession, and Oprah has become our culture’s official Mother Confessor. But all the tears from all the crocodiles on the planet won’t wash away the stain on Armstrong’s reputation.
Set aside, for the moment, his use of performance-enhancing drugs and his supposedly heart-felt, offended claims of innocence. By multiple, multiple accounts, Armstrong conducted himself like a first-class, egotistical jerk throughout this entire scandal. He fooled the naive and gullible into vouching for his honesty, he strong-armed teammates into joining him in drug use, he intimidated others into silence and he conducted a decade-long campaign to ruin anybody who threatened to reveal him as he truly is, which is a self-centered, arrogant bully.
So please, Lance, spare us the dramatics and groveling. Live strong, dude.
————————————–
Speaking of cheating, arrogant, self-centered bullies, neither Barry Bonds nor Roger Clemens got enough votes this week to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. I don’t have much sympathy for those guys, and if they never get in the hall, that would be fine with me.
But let’s at least be honest with ourselves. Everybody in baseball — casual fans, baseball writers, managers, agents, the players’ union, broadcasters, team owners and MLB executives such as Bud Selig included — all knew what was going on in the steroid era, and we pretended otherwise. When punch-and-judy second basemen suddenly turn into 50-homer sluggers, and when baseball records that have lasted for decades get obliterated by multiple players, it ain’t natural and we all knew it at the time. But it was selling tickets and raising TV ratings and it was FUN! Even chicks dig the long ball, right?
The baseball establishment now seems to believe that by casting all the blame on prominent scapegoats such as Clemens and Bonds, it can expunge itself of its own guilt for that era, and it cannot and should not.
I think Bud Selig should schedule a session with Oprah.
————————————–
Finally, in the stupid-government-tricks department, there’s the $1 trillion platinum coin. According to proponents of the idea, some of them pretty prominent (see here and here and here, among others), an odd provision in federal law would allow the U.S. Treasury Department to create a coin, made out of platinum, in a $1 trillion denomination. Federal assets would suddenly increase by $1 trillion, meaning the U.S. government would no longer be running up against its congressionally imposed debt ceiling.
Voila! Problem solved!
Look, the entire debt-ceiling debate is inherently silly. I get that. Congress has voted to spend trillions and borrow trillions, and it’s totally ridiculous to pretend that it can now refuse to pay that money back, which is what it would do by refusing to raise the debt ceiling. Given all that, solving a silly, make-believe problem with a silly, make-believe coin apparently has some appeal to otherwise serious people.
But this is clown-car politics beneath the dignity of the United States of America. It also would dynamite what little credibility the governing process in this country might still retain, and it’s a mark of our decline that such a concept would even be broached.

D. DoRight — “Donald duck was a BLACK duck — but since Disney had already painted the mouse black, he couldn’t paint donald black AND give him a white girlfriend, (Daisy), and expect to get rich.”
My wife went to the University of Oregon, and when she was there, many student organizations co-opted the ‘Donald’ duck mascot for their own purposes. The Hispanic student group’s t-shirts had a Duck decked out in Mesoamerican regalia, swinging a stone handaxe, and the Black Student Union’s t-shirts had — I am not making this up — a black Duck with a high-top fade haircut.
We hear that Disney asked the school to put a lid on that kind of thing, though, and from what we understand, it’s either died out or gone underground (a distinct possibility at that hippie college).

“Only gun extremists would find anything the slightest bit controversial about that quote. When you’ve got young people in DC shooting each other to death, Holder actually proposed trying to change attitudes and make it uncool to carry firearms.”
Well, then, at the very least I guess you are going to have to admit he doesn’t choose his words very carefully. First of all, he was not speaking ONLY about “young people”, but ESPECIALLY about young people (who does he reference as smokers in his subsequent metaphor? His parents and probably adults in general). Secondly, he uses two odd verbs in this context: “cower” (in relation to those who are presumably now ashamed to smoke and, in the future, to carry guns) and “brainwash” (not a word with many positive connotations, especially when used by a government official). There goes your glib finding “anything the slightest bit controversial about that quote” hypothesis.

Stevie Ray: BRO, you think all these teachers can boast mental stability in order to own a gun and take it to class?
Honestly, I don’t know nor do I care. My child will not be in those classrooms. Now, if you want my opinion about teaching and training teachers to be armed in the classroom, that’s a different monster.
I wouldn’t advocate such a thing because of the liability issue and recurrent training requirements necessary for such a thing. If you’re going to properly arm and train teachers, it’s going to take more than a 3 day class to properly teach them how to protect and defend that gun in close quarter fighting. If it were that simple, police academies and basic traning wouldn’t take months to accomplish.
Silly that the risk of having a gun in a school outweighs the probability that a shooter will show up at your school….Nuts.
Well, seeing that you’re in the actuarial sciences, you should be able to do the math on that one. Count the number of schools and shootings and then look at the number of guns you’d introduce on campus by arming teachers.

The $1 triillion coin is a stupid trick? One $ trillion coin won’t work because only Congress has the constitutional power to coin money and regulate the value thereof. Courts would probably decide as much. How about minting 1,000 $1 billion coins, or 1 million $1,000 coins? That should sound less ridiculous, less easy for punk news pundits to dismiss. So Republicans would probably oppose this unless the coin(s) had natural value from scarcity. So consider diamonds (141.75 carats equal an ounce.) Maybe only something like highly enriched uranium would have the requisite value. Then prohibit spending it externally! Alternatively, is it in executive power to monetize Treasuries, make them legal tender? Doutful. In any case, deposit “natural value” coins in accounts needed for expenditures. Debit or credit accounts containing these assets, as necessary.
It’s high time the mainstream media stopped ignoring and started to inform Americans of other alternatives! Congress has the Constitutional power to coin ANY AMOUNT of money needed. It can even do this WITHOUT DEBT! Look up “United States Notes,” (greenbacks.) If Obama had any backbone or was willing to risk his “political capital,” he’d put the Congress on the HOT SEAT by raising the salience of this idea! We’ve had 4 years of severe DEFLATION for millions of households. Deleveraging debt is going too slow and we need CONTROLLED “reflation” targeted at unemployment and housing.
Only a vast program of federal aid to small and medium sized domestic businesses and entrepreneurs and inventors to subsidize new American hires can get unemployment and consumption out of our painfully too slow “recovery.” Start with grants to companies that will recruit unemployed breadwinners in homes with mortgages or rent overdue. Obama’s lack of leadership, Congress’s corruption by banks, media cowardice to propose such banker – opposed solutions, and the public’s ignorance and apathy mean we will suffer much longer.

Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for senators: 1) they must be at least 30 years old, 2) they must have been citizens of the United States for at least the past nine years, and 3) they must be inhabitants of the states they seek to represent at the time of their election.
Note what is not included: Do not have to be 1) lawyer, 2) doctor, 3) business owner/executive, 4) offspring of politician, and no previous experience in any other elected office required. Miss Judd could have some issues meeting the 3rd requirement above but is otherwise qualified to be a US Senator.

Georgia has never been a LIBERAL state. There has not been a LIBERAL state in the Southern US since the Civil War. I hate to rain on your parade of ignorance, but Democrat does not equal Liberal. I find it interesting that no one here or hardly anywhere else bothers to indicate that Holder says at the outset of his talk that young people are “saturated” with violence by the media and entertainment industry. It would seem that in Holder’s mind, youths have been in part “brainwashed” by violence in the media and entertainment industry and so, by the same kind of approach, need to be reprogrammed. I personally am not interested in hearing liberals arguments for restricting the 2nd amendment when they have no interest in restoring some restrictions on the 1st – especially from Holder.

What a pathetically lame argument. Several of ‘us liberals’ here are firearm owners and several of us are military veterans as well. Your notion that ‘us liberals’ are monolithically pushing a ‘guns are bad’ argument is as incorrect as it is misleading.
Yes, there are *some* liberals here who’d probably like to see guns removed from public ownership entirely. But I feel pretty confident that they’re firmly in the liberal minority, particularly given the discussions we’ve been having in here over the last couple of weeks on the topic.

I was saving leave to take off when the baby’s born, but I’m burning it up now taking care of my ladies.

I am so sick of you guys on the left making patently FALSE statements such as this one Jay:
“Look, the entire debt-ceiling debate is inherently silly. I get that. Congress has voted to spend trillions and borrow trillions, and it’s totally ridiculous to pretend that it can now refuse to pay that money back, which is what it would do by refusing to raise the debt ceiling.”
The debt ceiling debate is NOT silly at all. It is probably the single most important debate we will have this year. More important than the “fiscal cliff” debate by far. The debt ceiling, contrary to your outrageous lie, DOES NOT KEEP AMERICA FROM PAYING DEBTS ALREADY INCURRED!!! RATHER IT KEEPS AMERICA FROM BORROWING ADDITIONAL MONEY!!!
How hard is it to understand the concept of “debt ceiling”? It simply means when you get to that point you cannot borrow ANY MORE money. You assume that if we get to that point we will stop paying our bills. That is patently ridiculous. We still will have trillions of dollars coming in every year and we will have to live within THAT REVENUE. Funny how you don’t even acknowledge the OTHER POSSIBILITY of cutting spending to that level. If we cut spending, we no longer have to worry about paying the debt.
Federal workers make an average of $85,000 per year. Everybody else makes an average of $55,000. Obama is hiring, on average, 37,000 people a year. If we put a federal hiring freeze in place we can save approx. $35 billion over 10 years without cutting ANYBODY. We currently have 2,115,707 federal employees whose salaries cost us $179 billion EVERY YEAR. If we cut federal salaries by 10% (about the same amount state salaries have been cut in Georgia) they would still be well above the national average and we would save an additional $179 billion over 10 year. Without even working up a sweat we save $210 billion over 10 years. THEN we can start cutting out non-essential programs and departments completely and before long, walla! We are balanced and can begin paying down the debt.

Sonny Perdue and Nathan Deal were Democrats too. So what’s your point?
Georgia has never been a LIBERAL state. There has not been a LIBERAL state in the Southern US since the Civil War. I hate to rain on your parade of ignorance, but Democrat does not equal Liberal. I know those mouthpieces teach and train you to think that, but just because you hear people associate the two doesn’t make it a fact. I know it’s hard for your binary brain to comprehend such things, but you should go back and research these things before spouting off like that. I’m trying to keep you from further embarassing yourself.

Joe, that’s usually my point. There are extremists on both sides with radical ideas. I think the vast majority on both sides fall somewhere in the middle. For example (and, there are many), I do not believe that abortion is right, but, it’s not my responsibility to force my beliefs others. Unfortunately, on this blog and many others, some liberals want to paint conservatives (whatever the hell that means) with a very broad brush and say that I want to eliminate the EPA and have dirty water. That just because I didn’t vote for Obama, I’m a racist or a birther, blah, blah, blah. Some conservatives are equally guilty of this habit. Why can’t we agree that just because we disagree on a particular issue doesn’t mean there is not common ground and the other is somehow “evil” or “loonie” because we don’t agree on each and every issue? Heck, even Fred and I found some common ground recently.
Sure, I tune into Fox News from time to time. I don’t agree with everything that is said there. I watch O’Reilly on Wednesday for Dennis Miller…he’s hilarious! But, I also watch CNN, MSNBC, etc from time to time…Al Sharpton…he’s hilarious! I have the HufPost app on my iphone. I like to think that I have a decently well-rounded view of the world.
But, just because I own more guns than I can count in my mind doesn’t make me a “gun nut.” I grew up with guns. My earliest memory is shooting squirrels in the pecan grove out back, dressing them and having mom cook them. Hell, this is the south. 99% of the pick-up trucks around here have at least 1 gun in them…and, there are aLOT of pick-up trucks around my neck of the woods.
Anyway…

Couldnt let a post by “barking frog” pass without some clarity. You said something that “the right to bear arms preceded the constitution”…quick history lesson. The Constitution was written first…only later did the “Bill of Rights” pass..which are the 10 Amendments to said Constitution…which includes the 2nd Amendment about the need for militias, and hence the right to bear arms so that, oh..you know, we had NO STANDING ARMY to protect the new Country we called the UNITED States of America
…………………………………………………………………………………………
and prior to the Constitution there was no right to bear arms, correct? Or is
it prior to the 2nd amendment there was no right to bear arms ? and anyone
with arms was an outlaw.
……………………………………………………………………………
…..Prior to the Constitution, there was the Revolutionary War…and Prior to that we were a Colony of Britain (and I dont think King George was too keen on having a colony with a bunch of gun-toting citizens who thought for themselves)…
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
after the revolutionary war there was the articles of confederation, which you missed,
but the colonists did have the right to bear arms which you may find in English history
if you care to look…….

btw, we could also make the very drastic decision to no longer pay interest on the debt. This is quite often done when people get into financial difficulties. They negotiate with credit card companies and get into a payment plan that stops interest from accruing from that point forward and they just pay off the balance that has accrued to THAT POINT. Yes, our credit rating would take a hit but it’s going to anyway when we get to the point that we can’t pay it. We COULD apply that concept to FOREIGN debt only, which is about half of the debt and continue paying it to American investors.
It is time to think outside the box people.

I don’t have any problem with that at all. You and I have even been getting along a bit lately.
I do think that we have a few contributors — on both sides — who just like to stir s**t up because they like the stink. For my part, I like to snark and make smartazz comments, but I *prefer* a polite, adult conversation where ideas are tossed out and taken up for discussion, where polite criticism doesn’t mean calling one’s post-opponent names and where the participants don’t all look like they’re cruising for heart attacks and strokes.
I think that both sides are better served when they articulate their own beliefs and opinions — and where, if someone has a trust issue with another poster, they say so and say why. This whole notion of ‘this is what YOU think, liberal b@st@rd’ and ‘i know this is what you want, you conservative jackazz’ doesn’t advance the discussion and it doesn’t lead to anything positive.

Most people understand that Congress spends the money and now has to pay the bills. The problem is how to you stop the debt from continuing to climb and reach unsustainable amounts, leveraging our children and grandchildren’s future? Does anyone, Lib or Conservative, think we can continue to borrow at the rate we are? Congress can’t reign in spending, so just saying it is a silly debate is misleading and disingenuous by Jay. the Debt Ceiling debate is not about paying the old bills, it is about slowing down the increasing debt and eliminating the deficit for next year and the years after. Dems and Libs are avoiding the crushing fiscal reality and kicking the can down the road. What will it take to get them to do the things necessary? you can take 100% of the income of the top 1% and still run a deficit. So that red herring debate was won by the Dems- and it raised enough to pay for 6 days of Gov’t spending. The only way things get done is by leveraging raising the debt ceiling so that we aren’t back here again. Are the libs ok with the debt being at $22T+ by the 2016? You can say the Reps had a role in running it up and i would agree. So what do we do now? just keep raising the ceiling without getting spending under control? What happened to the balanced approach?

Well, what’s to stop them from making thousands of these coins? We could suddenly have a quadrillion (I think that’s the number) dollars in coinage!
Of course, they’d be worthless because you couldn’t actually use them anywhere. “Hi Mister Banker, can you give me change for this trillion dollar coin?”

Okay barking frog..ill play along. Yes, I missed the Articles of Confederation…however, nothing is noted about an “individuals right to bear arms” in those articles….it DOES say that a “well regulated militia with sufficient stores, will be maintained by each State.” That was said in the context of “no State shall engage in any war unless invaded.”
So while the use of “arms” to hunt, for survival, were probably a given (they did not have a Publix or Kroger back then!) there is nothing about protecting the “individual” with gun ownership….hate to break it to you, but alot of those historical documents need to have a dose of CONTEXT when you interpret them 200 plus years later….

Adam, what is your solution to “stop the madness”.
Not Adam, but there’s nothing we can do to stop it short of shutting America down and selling it, in pieces, to the highest bidders. Violence is part of who we are, and these things have been going on for a long time. The only difference is the speed in which they become public knowledge due to technology.
The best thing we can do is train ourselves to be ready with an escape when the time arises. Unless you continuously train for active shooter scenarios, your fine motor skills (most people use when shooting at a range) will disappear faster than a dollar at a strip joint. If you don’t have that automatic response trained into your gross motor skills, you’re nothing more than a target at a shooting gallery if you don’t get out the way fast.
