On Ashley Judd, $1 trillion coins and other matters of import

I see where Kentucky-born movie star Ashley Judd continues to talk about running for the U.S. Senate against Mitch McConnell. McConnell may be in a bit of political trouble, and as Al Franken has demonstrated, it is quite possible for a Hollywood celebrity to perform credibly in the Senate. But Minnesota ain’t Kentucky, and in this case, Judd has as much chance of becoming a U.S. senator as McConnell has of being a Hollywood leading man.

101109_mitch_mcconnell_face_ap_328

———————————-

Cyclist Lance Armstrong is scheduled to appear next week on Oprah, where he may finally, publicly confess to years of performance-enhancing drug use on the way to seven Tour de France titles, all of which have been stripped from him.

Armstrong Livestrong CyclingThe American people will supposedly forgive almost anything after a public confession, and Oprah has become our culture’s official Mother Confessor. But all the tears from all the crocodiles on the planet won’t wash away the stain on Armstrong’s reputation.

Set aside, for the moment, his use of performance-enhancing drugs and his supposedly heart-felt, offended claims of innocence. By multiple, multiple accounts, Armstrong conducted himself like a first-class, egotistical jerk throughout this entire scandal. He fooled the naive and gullible into vouching for his honesty, he strong-armed teammates into joining him in drug use, he intimidated others into silence and he conducted a decade-long campaign to ruin anybody who threatened to reveal him as he truly is, which is a self-centered, arrogant bully.

So please, Lance, spare us the dramatics and groveling. Live strong, dude.

————————————–

Speaking of cheating, arrogant, self-centered bullies,  neither Barry Bonds nor Roger Clemens got enough votes this week to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. I don’t have much sympathy for those guys, and if they never get in the hall, that would be fine with me.

But let’s at least be honest with ourselves. Everybody in baseball — casual fans, baseball writers, managers, agents, the players’ union, broadcasters, team owners and MLB executives such as Bud Selig included — all knew what was going on in the steroid era, and we pretended otherwise. When punch-and-judy second basemen suddenly turn into 50-homer sluggers, and when baseball records that have lasted for decades get obliterated by multiple players, it ain’t natural and we all knew it at the time. But it was selling tickets and raising TV ratings and it was FUN! Even chicks dig the long ball, right?

The baseball establishment now seems to believe that by casting all the blame on prominent scapegoats such as Clemens and Bonds, it can expunge itself of its own guilt for that era, and it cannot and should not.

I think Bud Selig should schedule a session with Oprah.

————————————–

Finally, in the stupid-government-tricks department, there’s the $1 trillion platinum coin. According to proponents of the idea, some of them pretty prominent (see here and here and here, among others), an odd provision in federal law would allow the U.S. Treasury Department to create a coin, made out of platinum, in a $1 trillion denomination. Federal assets would suddenly increase by $1 trillion, meaning the U.S. government would no longer be running up against its congressionally imposed debt ceiling.

Voila! Problem solved!

Look, the entire debt-ceiling debate is inherently silly. I get that. Congress has voted to spend trillions and borrow trillions, and it’s totally ridiculous to pretend that it can now refuse to pay that money back, which is what it would do by refusing to raise the debt ceiling. Given all that, solving a silly, make-believe problem with a silly, make-believe coin apparently has some appeal to otherwise serious people.

But this is clown-car politics beneath the dignity of the United States of America. It also would dynamite what little credibility the governing process in this country might still retain, and it’s a mark of our decline that such a concept would even be broached.

Jay,

“There is no suggestion of government confiscation of firearms. No suggestion of gun bans. And any claim otherwise is simply foolish.”

Oh please. You know as well as I know there are many on the left that want to confiscate and ban guns. Look at the last part of Holder’s speech about brainwashing the children. Can you honestly tell me that he wants children to be brainwashed to believe that the 2nd Amendment is good and all citizens should have guns?

Mr. Bookman, do you have any idea of how the monetary system actually works? I don’t think so, given some of the remarks you’ve made in this post and many others in the past.

The Federal Reserve Board of Atlanta is down at 11th Street and West Peachtree. Why don’t you call them and ask them if they will explain it to you? I’m sure that there is someone there who can describe for you exactly how this works. It would be very helpful if people who are paid to comment on economic matters actually had some idea of what they were talking about.

For the record, it’s actually a double-entry accounting system. There is nothing that “backs” the currency. Its value is what someone will give you for it. No country on earth uses a system that is “backed” by anything.

The government doesn’t have to use anything to create more money.

The condition of the victims was not immediately clear.

I think the White House’s official line on the $1T coin is exactly right. Don’t rule it out entirely.

And to make it clear, I’m in disagreement with Jay on whether this is somehow “beneath [our] dignity”. It is, as smarter men than me have said, a silly but benign solution to a silly but potentially horrific problem.

If Congress wants to decrease the growth of the debt, they can pass budgets that do this. Continually playing chicken over the debt ceiling is unacceptable. (It’s fine to stomp your feet a bit and raise concern over the debt growth if you wish–obviously, both sides have indulged in this, and that’s just part of the political theater.)

Stuart Smalley, a famous Republican has a message for his fellow Republicans:

My fellow Republicans, it was a horrible November, but let us remember, denial ain’t just a river in Egypt! We lost the election fair and square and because we were stupid. Lets remember, our party is still good enough, smart enough, and doggone it, there are still a few people out there that like us.

When we all say we should have nominated Elmer Fudd, well, you’re should-ing all over yourself. Its time to trace it, face it, and erase it. “No more Republican stinkin’ thinkin!”

We need to remember, we are a worthy party…and that’s…okay. We’ve been in a shame spiral, but now we must regroup. Our party needs a checkup from the neckup. You’re only as sick as your secrets, and it is no longer a secret, we haven’t been very nice, so we have already healed from our sickness.

I learned what love is from my parents. Which is that you find that one special person who was placed on the planet just for you, and then you put them through forty years of living hell, that’s why I’m sticking with the Republicans, for another 40 if that’s what it takes.

Remember fellow Republicans, you are someone.

_______________

It was once quoted “How can Ronald Reagan actor ever become president?”

Why was Ronald Reagan a Better Actor as President Than He was as Movie Star?

Ronald Reagan was an inveterate teller of anecdotes. He loved to tell people stories both about himself and others. The problem is that so many of these stories weren’t just filled with inconsistencies, many of them were outright lies. As a perfect example, consider the story that was particularly fond of telling in his later years about being part of the film crew present at the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. Now, this isn’t simply a case of mixing up facts, thinking he was one place when in reality he was at another nearby. Ronald Reagan never left the shores of America during the entirety of World War II!
Yet few people apparently ever had trouble believing his creative memory. It can only be assumed that Ronald Reagan himself must at some subconscious level have believed in the lies; if you believe them, it isn’t lying. (Can you say George Constanza?) And that is the difference between Reagan’s acting abilities as a movie star and politician He couldn’t make a goofball George Custer believable because he probably didn’t accept the idea that the hero (or villain, depending upon your point of view) of Little Big Horn could possibly have been a goofball, but he was better as George Gipp because he believed that myth.

The Debs was sitting around yesterday daydreaming, (while on a long boring conference call), and I was thinking to myself, “I wonder what a Conned Utopia would look like?”

Myriad of thoughts cross my mind like that when I’m bored to distraction, but anyway, I came up with the five things that would make a Conned world perfect:

No EPA — Dirty everything everywhere and millions sick and dying because of “Those damned Liberals”

Hunger Games — where you have a rich 1% who lives far away from the dirty, starving 99% — if the 99% want more food, they have to send their young to be killed to get it, (all for the enjoyment of the 1% of course).

Ellie May without the strength, or intellect — A conned woman will be good to look at, dumb, and easily manipulated. The negative would be that she couldn’t cook…..in the kitchen….

Eddie Long — A Conned man is righteous………..in public. In public he is the epitome of a SAVEd, strong virile male — in private he likes little boys. That’s why he needs Ellie May to be dumb; so she won’t notice that you’re supposed to have sex more than 3x a year.

Stepford Ethnic people — In Connotopia, the “ethnic” people will do as you tell them to do and say what you tell them to say. They’ll even sing and dance and shine your shoes on command.

And I know this is an extra one but can’t leave out:

Guns everywhere. In Connotopia everyone would have a gun. That kid on the corner? He has an assault rifle, (for hunting deer). That little old lady? She has a Mac 10, (for shopping at her favorite store).

In Connotopia everything would be perfect because everything would be exactly how they want it, forever and ever Amen.

January 10, 2013 | 9:59 am

At least two people were shot at Taft Union High School in Kern County on Thursday morning and the suspected shooter has been taken into custody, according to local media reports.

23ABC News in Bakersfield said that the incident happened about 9 a.m. and that the suspect was taken into custody about 20 minutes later.

The television station said it received phone calls from people hiding in closets inside the school, which was being evacuated and searched.

Calls to the Taft Police Department were not immediately returned. A Kern County sheriff’s spokesman confirmed he was heading to the scene in response to a possible shooting, but did not have additional details.

He was on the verge of composing an opera that would have turned Mozart green with envy. Was it the dreaded Gun Culture? Unrequited lust for the luscious Honey Cocaine? Or reading Bookman’s Blog?

I heard an argument on Mike and Mike this morning on the Hall of Fame issue for the steriod users. It seems some have changed their opinion from disregarding entry for Bonds et al to allowing it. The position is that the Hall of Fame is about the history of baseball. As such it should not exclude the 1990’s…He suggested that many unsavory characters remain in the Hall such as Ty Cobb…of course he didn’t break the rules. I don’t see why Piazza is not in….the pall of shame surrounding him is simply acne on his back.

Perhaps they should have a separate hall within the hall….the untitled Hall Of Shame if you will. At least the history of the 1990’s with records shattered left and right but keep them apart and make the controversy, not unlike the black sox, part of the theme…

how come all these school shootings take place in LIBERAL STATES?

per wiki:

The Citadel is evolving as a planned community where residents are bound together by:

Patriotism
Pride in American Exceptionalism
Our proud history of Liberty as defined by our Founding Fathers, and
Physical preparedness to survive and prevail in the face of natural catastrophes — such as Hurricanes Sandy or Katrina — or man-made catastrophes such as a power grid failure or economic collapse.

Shorter jaypat: RON PAUL RULZ!”

Ron Paul is an advocate of a “hard” money system. “Hard” money is a system wherein all the currency is “backed” by some hard commodity, such as gold or silver AND is convertible between paper, account balances, etc. and the underlying comodity.

That is the polar opposite of what I beleive. The reason no country uses it any more is because the size of the economy can never be bigger than the amount of gold on hand without adjusting the ratio of the commodity to the currency.

I thought it was a representative of the people.

Exactly. People, not party. When McConnell said that, “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term President”, that was putting party above the people.

I did not know about all of those other qualities implied.

Nope — Yankee Doodle Dandy is white, (and gay – hence the dandy), but Uncle Sam was originally called Uncle SamBO, so he was black.

What happened was when the white folks found out that they were celebrating a BLACK man, they immediately changed SamBO’s image to that of SAM that we enjoy today.

Of more great moments in history – Donald duck was a BLACK duck — but since Disney had already painted the mouse black, he couldn’t paint donald black AND give him a white girlfriend, (Daisy), and expect to get rich.

Now ya know! And knowing is half the battle! GI Joe!

BRO, you think all these teachers can boast mental stability in order to own a gun and take it to class? Silly that the risk of having a gun in a school outweighs the probability that a shooter will show up at your school….Nuts.

This may be apocryphal and not true at all, but I’ve read several times that Mel Brooks incessantly pestered John Wayne to read the script and to make a cameo appearance in the film. The Duke finally agreed to read the script, but turned down Brooks’ offer, saying that the film would be ‘too dirty’ for his image.

But, Wayne added, he’d be ‘first in line to see it.’ :D

DDR, well they are going back. Apparently it will be a “walled community”. The drawings look like a castle. We know that was a great defense…. how many centuries ago?

From their FAQs:

What is the Goal of the III Citadel Project?
1.To provide a community for like-minded Patriots to live in Thomas Jefferson’s Rightful Liberty
2.To be removed and protected from peril in order to preserve ourselves, our posterity, and Liberty in the event of a national economic implosion
3.To live a free/freer life in Idaho (or elsewhere in the American Redoubt) amongst the current strong, self-reliant and Liberty-loving residents of the region

Who Started This Project?

This project began as an idea in the Patriot Blogosphere in early 2012. Since its inception, scores of Liberty-loving individuals have contributed their time, their expertise, and their financial support to make this idea become reality….

The model will be similar in many ways to that of Disneyland. It is walled, gated, private property with controlled access. People pay to enter and agree to the rules because they see value in doing so. It is all based on a voluntary agreement between the owners of the property and those who want to come inside. Millions of people visit Disneyland and interact peacefully. It’s exceptionally rare to hear of any serious problems. The key is that those people want to be there and understand what is expected of them. Surprisingly similar to what we are doing.
