Chuck Hagel the right man at the right time

120215_chuck_hagel_ap_605-1

Chuck Hagel has always defied categorization, which is one reason I’ve liked and respected him.

Of course, that also explains why Hagel’s nomination as defense secretary faces opposition from elements of both political parties. Washington likes people who can be “counted on,” meaning that they adhere to the brightly defined lines that are used to distinguish “us” from “them.” People such as Hagel, who pay little attention to such lines, are viewed with suspicion and distrust by some.

In Hagel’s case, he is Republican, but according to conservatives not a “real” Republican. He is a war veteran who earned two Purple Hearts in Vietnam as an enlisted Army infantryman, but his thoughts on foreign policy reveal a sophisticated doubt about the usefulness of war. Although he voted in favor of the invasion of Iraq, he quickly became a harsh critic of the conduct of that war. Most of all, Hagel is a questioner by nature, and he is more willing to follow where the answers lead him than are most in the nation’s Capitol.

I strongly disagree with Hagel on some points, particularly on his willingness to defer to intelligence and law enforcement when constitutional rights supposedly conflict with national security concerns. Back in the late ’90s, Hagel also publicly opposed the nomination of James Hormel as a U.S. ambassador on the grounds that Hormel was “”openly, aggressively gay.”

Those words reflected a depth of homophobia that did not speak well of Hagel. But it is also true that the country as a whole has moved a long way on gay rights in the past two decades, and if Hagel has moved along with it, as he now claims, that should not disqualify him from high service.

On the other hand, the claim by some that Hagel is somehow anti-Israel or even anti-Semitic because he has been willing to question the decisions of Israeli political leadership is and always has been nonsense. Nothing that Hagel has said or done on such issues places him outside the mainstream in this country or even in Israel itself, and certainly do not disqualify him from service as U.S. defense secretary.

Hagel’s nomination comes at an important point in this nation’s military and foreign-policy history. The world has changed; our relative position in the world has changed as well. But those changes are not yet reflected in our defense structure, policy and ideology. By his background, intellect and questioning nature, Hagel is well-suited to that role.

Politically speaking, the Hagel nomination also plays into the meta-narrative that the White House appears to be spinning these days. By nominating a Republican ex-senator to a top Cabinet position, Obama can claim credit for a gesture of bipartisanship. To the degree that Senate Republicans erupt in outrage, attempting to bar their former colleague from service on grounds of being insufficiently conservative, they cement their image as extremists unwilling to compromise. So it will be interesting to watch how they play this.

I like you, barking frog, and this is not a dig at you specifically, but…

I would like to point out this is one of those rare times I have seen a left-wing talking point get so much play. This one is repeated almost verbatim and I do not like that.

By the way, I saw a Tea Party Express chairwoman on TV Sunday, and she had some very reasonable things to say. She seemed a bit angry when talking about spending cuts, but the news anchor wasn’t there to debate her, just ask questions. Under that environment, it seemed she was making sense on us cutting some spending, on the reasons Congress generally doesn’t deal with it, and on the reasons that the GOP didn’t gain seats this year, which was that the GOP stayed off the economic message and focused on being anti-Obama and social issues (she incorrectly identified the Republicans as at fault, and Tea Party as blameless).

File this one under “Proof I am a registered Republican.”

Though I’m seriously thinking of changing it to Independent. Democrats are certainly being too whiney about not getting their way over the fiscal cliff fight and Obamacare and so on.

Yes, Mr. Hagel is different from other Republicans. He’s different in that he actually served in the military and was awarded two purple hearts for courage. Because he has military experience, he knows first-hand the cost of war and he respects avoiding it whenever it is unnecessary. The other Republicans thump their chest and display their bravado, but when it was their time to serve in the military, they avoided service (with the exception of McCain.) Every one of the chicken-hawks who started the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ran away from military service–Bush (who didn’t even show up for most of his service in the National Guard) Cheney (who had better things to do than go to Vietnam) and Rumsfeld (no explanation known). At least Mr. Hagel has walked the walk so he’s earned the right to talk the talk.

“Politically speaking, the Hagel nomination also plays into the meta-narrative that the White House appears to be spinning these days.”

Nominating someone to spin a narrative is a stupid reason to pick them for an incredibly important job. Oh I forgot, he’s pals with Obama. That also makes him imminently qualified.

I’ll be very interested to see how those currently serving view this choice.

Lindsey Graham says this is an “in your face” move by the president. Like who cares about his face.
The president gets to nominate the individual whom he believes will best serve the nation in that position. They went after Susan Rice as though the president’s only concern should be who Republicans want. Enough of these whiney people. The republicans have been on a four year temper tantrum and the people are sick of them.

Jay, do you have to parrot the White House talking points?

So you are OK with a defence secretary who cannot be counted on to maintain a course?

Hagel has long ago severed his ties to Republicans, so the line does not work for Obama or you.

If Hagel was not the Obama nominee, my guess is your forgiveness on his remarks about gays would not come so quick.

Hagel’s remarks on Israel are troubling. People do not change – see remarks on gays.

So you think Hagle well-suited for Defense Secretary, and you are OK with America no longer being the leader of Right? Obama thinks so, he is working as hard as possible to relegate us to a has-been power.

Obama likes Hagel because he is like Obama. Smart, not a team player.

And lastly, Republican opposition will not be because Hagel is not Conservative enough. How about because he is not the right man for the job regardless of what you and Barry think.

Two other points: it isn’t just righties who have a problem with him. Some gay groups are dug in solidly against him. Two, as far as a Republican nominee – it isn’t just bipartisanship that’s a reason. More cuts are coming. Big cuts. Republicans are dug in on “there is no waste, no bad programs, no mismanagement, no nothing that can be cut, ever, from defense because all these generals tell me so and we believe everything they say because they have these neat, shiny stars on their shoulders.” A Democrat as SecDef would play into their narrative. Having a Republican like Gates lead with massive cuts, firing of generals and a civilian service chief, then following with another Republican in the same position is a politically astute move.

And don’t we all know that.

“And if you want to revisit that discussion, you can certainly chase down some of the claims yourself, as I did.”

Let’s establish where we are on this debate. I think this Wiki article summarizes it well enough:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spitting_Image

Last time we discussed this, I suggested you actually contact Lindgren and see if he could not provide you with copies (if he had them of the articles he cites). If you haven’t, perhaps I will.

As I said, I have a hard time imagining how a prominent law professor would publicly cite articles as evidence (with the name of the paper and dates) that did not actually exist – to publicly make things up, in other words – in response to a book written by Lembcke (the above alluded to The Spitting Image):

http://www.volokh.com/posts/1170928927.shtml (be sure to follow all of the links)

But you apparently do not. That has been the main point of contention between us. I am surprised that, if Lindgren was lying, he has not been debunked by now. Perhaps no one cares enough to investigate. Or maybe he wasn’t lying. Ina any case, we cannot both be right, just as Lembcke and Lindgren cannot be right. Since the former is essentially trying to prove a negative, all that is required to invalidate his claims is to validate even some of Lindgren’s.

Let me see if I cannot validate two or three of his sources independently (if I am unable to contact Lindgren). Obviously, it will be hard to do if archived articles are not freely available on the Internet. It will require calling the publishers (if they still exist) and seeing if they will mail me a copy of the article(s) or paying for subscriptions.

It might best be explained that recently Obama has instead of leading the way, as is our history, let other countries such as Russia lead the way on world issues. Thus the infamous lead from behind. Obama talks a big game, but that’s it. His view of America’s roll in the world is very much astray from our history. If you, Jay and other Moonbats are OK with that, then that’s your choice. I don’t think being a highly decorated veteran exempts anyone from criticism or blame for things done later in life as a civilian – just as I don’t think OJ’s Heisman trophy and illustrious professional career exempts him from being prosecuted for crimes he committed (an extreme example, but I use it intentionally to make my point). All the legacy meida and Leftie bloggers pile on Boehner for being the problem when in truth it is Obama through Reid that is the problem with Congress not doing anything. No worries mates………….the progressive unprincipled anti-war jokes of the left will continue to look stupid under Obama.
The killing will continue too.
From Daniel McAdams——————-
.
Desperation can make people do strange things. Obama’s election was like a neutron bomb to the majority of the antiwar Left, with too many of the former eloquent critics of “W” suddenly twisting themselves into inhuman intellectual contortions to explain why drones in Yemen/Pakistan, targeted killing of American citizens, and arming al-Qaeda in Libya and Syria were both humanitarian and patriotic.

The rest of those opposed to empire were left desperate and grasping. Many initially sung hosannas to Obama claiming he was an antiwar alternative we could get behind. That didn’t turn out too well. To their credit some of those soon realized their mistake, but the intellectually dangerous impulse to seek salvation in a personality lingered — the temptation of a short-cut to the promised land.

Which leads us to former Senator Chuck Hagel, who far too many in the remnant of the antiwar, anti-empire movement have taken to praising as if with his nomination — expected tomorrow — the war party would be defeated.

It is a trap.

Hagel is the perfect choice for Obama if he wants to actually expand militarism: Hagel’s peace/anti-empire backers will be silenced when Hagel does as he is told (as he must) and continues, possibly expands, the disastrous policies of this administration. Do they really believe that the employee will force his drone-a-holic employer to suspend what has become the centerpiece of his foreign policy? What are Hagel’s backers going to do when he does as he must, as a man who serves at the pleasure of a president who believes he has the Constitutional authority to draw up a “kill list” of Americans? Will they start denouncing the very person they demanded get the job in the first place? How foolish would that look? How ineffective.

Be careful what you ask for. And don’t forget that among the others asking are those like the Podesta Group, who are currently making a killing on all the killing they supported in Serbia under their former boss, former president Clinton.

If the Senate votes in favor of the new rule that has been proposed by Sen. Harking (D-IA) that merely states if a senator wants to filibuster, he can do so for 3 days; if longer, a vote is taken and with 55 votes the filibuster is ended; if not, the senator has 3 additional days with 51 votes needed to end the filibuster. Along with this action, the senator that chooses to filibuster a bill has to stand in the well and speak for the time that has been allocated.

For all of you that do not understand, current Senate rules allow one to threaten a filibuster which requires 61 votes to override and they are not required to speak.

Guns should be completely outlawed, genius. The 2nd Amendment was actually meant only to apply to men in a state militia in 1787. That’s it. Anyone who think otherwise is just being willfully ignorant and stupid. I mean, how can anyone NOT see THAT???

“Now I know alot of people you need to protect yourself from, but Christians are the most dangerous of the bunch.”

Finally, you are making some sense. They are nothing but a bunch of backward-thinking homophobes. Muslims are no where near as fanatical as people in the 700 Club. I know we are supposed to be for tolerance, but in this case we need to make an exception. I say let’s not only censor all of those insane right wing talk show hosts, but all of the Christians as well. We need to have reasonable restrictions upon free speech.

“Besides, you got to know Sin to do anything about it, and Christians know it real good.”

You are only justifying my previous point, RC. What in the world is “sin”? What an incredibly stupid concept. People, like dogs, are just animals. They weren’t created. The evolved somehow (don’t ask me to explain speciation – you have to have a PhD to comprehend or even critique the concept) from single cell organisms. That should be evident to all. Only a moron would not see how much like monkeys we humans are. So, there really can’t be any right or wrong in an absolute sense. We are born and then we die and become dirt. I am SO sick of all of the nutty religious myths.

JamVet – there may be a lot of history on Congressional log jams, but I don’t think you will find one where up until now they went four years without approving a budget.

The no-budget method is Obama Chicago style politics. Let a crisis develop, then rush through what would otherwise never be approved. So, no budget gets Obama money to throw back to his cronies that otherwise would not be there.

Progressives: This is the unintended consequences of your no competition, every one gets a blue ribbon and there are no winners of losers mentality over the past 30 years.

“A 2006 study found that students suffer from ‘ambition inflation’ as their increased ambitions accompany increasingly unrealistic expectations.

‘Since the 1960s and 1970s, when those expectations started to grow, there’s been an increase in anxiety and depression,’ Twenge said. ‘There’s going to be a lot more people who don’t reach their goals.’

“Twenge is the author of a separate study showing a 30 per cent increase towards narcissism in students since 1979.”

Our culture used to encourage modesty and humility and not bragging about yourself,’ Twenge told BBC News. ‘It was considered a bad thing to be seen as conceited or full of yourself.’

Just because someone has high self-esteem doesn’t mean they’re a narcissist. Positive self-assessments can not only be harmless but completely true.

However, one in four recent students responded to a questionnaire called the Narcissistic Personality Inventory with results pointing towards narcissistic self-assessments.

Narcissism is defined as excessive self-love or vanity; self-admiration, or being self-centered.

Twenge said that’s a trait that is often negative and destructive, and blames its boom on several trends – including parenting styles, celebrity culture, social media, and easy credit – for allowing people to seem more successful than they really are.

Based on this history, the abortion rights group NARAL gave him a zero rating, and the National Right to Life Committee gave him a rating of a hundred per cent. He supported teacher-led prayer in schools: the Christian Coalition gave him its top rating of a hundred per cent. He was staunchly in favor of gun rights—he got an “A” rating from the N.R.A.—capital punishment, and the drug war.”

What you do not seem to understand is that the billionaires will continue to have the same amount of money no matter what the government does. The only ones that get hurt is the middle class when they do not get any raises, pay more for insurance, less benefits like employer contributions to 401K and maybe not even a job if it is going to cut into the billionaires money. Such a high regressive tax rate only hurts the middle class and the working poor.

“The only ones that get hurt is the middle class when they do not get any raises, pay more for insurance, less benefits like employer contributions to 401K and maybe not even a job if it is going to cut into the billionaires money.”

#1: When the middle class gets screwed out of pay raises and such, it is not the responsibility of the government to provide those things. That is purely a private sector matter. Any government involvement is mostly due to the wealthy lobbying Congress to pass laws that benefit them and not necessarily the middle class.

#2: The love of money is the root of all evil. If some billionaire thinks it’s better for him to earn $10 billion while screwing his employees instead of making $9 billion and rewarding his employees with that other billion, then he might want to practicing how to squeeze through the eye of a needle.

I agree with you on your first statement. #2 When the government raises their taxes $1 billion then they are not going to actually take the billion dollar cut. They will get their money other ways. (historical fact).

Another example: If I company that has a gross income of $500,000 per year (I file my taxes via individual income taxes) with a profit margin of 20% and now I have to pay 4 1/2 more taxes now then my profits go down from $100,000 per year to $85,000. I have two employees that I pay $30,000 each. Do you expect me to continue to run my business making $15,000 less, do I layoff one of my employees to make the around the same amount of money, do I raise my prices to cover the tax increase or do make one of my workers part time and raise my prices?

How does your example of someone, with a gross income of $500,000 fit anywhere within the confines of your original statement OR my response to that original statement?

As I said, you can’t stand to be proven wrong and you will say anything you think is necessary to prove yourself right. You need to look in the mirror before you try assessing me, bro.

“Rep. Paul Battles, R-Cartersville, has prepared legislation lawmakers could consider when they return to session beginning next week. The bill would empower school boards to allow one or more administrators to carry a weapon at school, at a school function or on a bus. Not a chance.

It’s not that he doesn’t “have the balls” so much as it’s that Obama wouldn’t have nominated him without having made damn sure he was on board with the centerpiece of the Obama war strategy in the middle east.

You’ll note that, true to Obama fashion, it was a renegade Republican he chose, not Democrat. This way, again in true Obama fashion, Obama gets the best of both worlds as it were. Liberals are happy to play along — ever in love with the infinite cleverness of the master chess-player — while right-wingers are left fuming.

now for the other bit of honesty, those of you who wish to jump on republicans for opposing him should look at half of your own party first and ask why. Saying that republicans will opposes anyone who gets nominated is to ignore the fact that you will support anyone he nominates.

The Republicans in the Senate will most likely whine and moan and then eventually cement the appointment of Hagel. I do hope that he is able to get into that office and see about cutting Defense spending. Why are we in over 100-countries overseas? What purpose does it serve to alienate all of the world from us by our occupation of so many countries? If our presence is truly needed, so be it. Yet, if our presence is needed in countries such as Germany, South Korea and Japan, let them help foot the bill for our presence. At least Hagel may see clear to investigate such expenses. That is more than Panetta has done in his term of the position.

I also hope that the Secretary of Defense looks hard at our role in the UN forces. It, too, is an expense that needs investigation. So, let’s see what Hagel can do…….

This pretty much covers the real reason for the nomination. Well said Jay…

So it will be interesting to watch how they play this

Patriot Act? yes, the first bill that was shoved through Congress (and the right complained about Obamacare???!!!) should have been replaced with something that better balanced privacy and security

death penalty – he’s not going to interfere with state executions – isn’t that what the right always says it wants?

I was waiting for Bro’ to come on board to say this, but even though it cost me a couple hundred bucks, “Bama” Is the word!.. I messed with bro’ yesterday with my link of the Nuns singing the Irish fight song and in doing so alluded to the religious angle…you know God had to be on Notra Dame’s side…what with all those Catholics praying and all…But last night reminded me of something Napoleon was supposed to have said, when one of his generals said, God is on our side. His answer was, God is on the side that has the best artillery. The “Bama” quarterback was the artillery and the “Bama” running backs were the armor. Gotta say it…Roll Tide! Now go clean up that mess…what your red Elephants did to those poor little Leprechauns…EEWWW!

Congrats to your team, Brosephus!

My brother in law (5th generation Texan) was rooting for ‘Bama. I asked why, he said he just liked’em. Asked who I was for – said I didn’t have a stake in the game for either team but felt inclined towards ND because I have a bias for the underdog. He said, wait, isn’t ‘Bama ranked #2? I said you got me there – what with all the press and pundits I thought ‘Bama was on top of the polls and ND was some upstart got to 2 by a fluke.

Twenty minutes in, it didn’t really matter.

Redneck was right – that ‘Bama team could beat half the NFL teams. Even though they’re losing a good number on the offensive line, their backups’ll be better than most teams’ first strings.

I do kinda look forward to another ‘Bama-A&M game, though. ;-)

“And yet, a little more than halfway through the first quarter of this wildly hyped, endlessly discussed, over-dramatized game, we knew. Alabama was up 14-0 and Notre Dame had barely collected a yard. The Crimson Tide were barreling downfield with little resistance, and that vaunted Irish defense looked gassed. Sporting events (and Professor Berra) condition us to say it’s never really over, but this was over. Notre Dame was toast. Alabama added another 14 points in the second quarter and that 28-0 hole resembled K2. What would Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly even say in the locker room? What possible in-game adjustment existed? Run to the bus? ”

Towncrier — “And don’t we all know that.”

Pretty clearly *you* don’t, since you sought to do it yet again.

“Let’s establish where we are on this debate. I think this Wiki article summarizes it well enough:”

Where we are on this debate is that you asserted that I was taking Lembcke’s position. You were wrong, since I either don’t care about Lembcke’s position or outright disagree with it on three of four counts, PLUS I didn’t even bring him up. You did.

You then cited an extensive postby a gentleman named Lindgren on Eugene Volokh’s blog as being evidence that Vietnam vets *had* been spit on, so I followed up on the first three claims in his post.

Not a single one panned out; in fact, at least one of them may possibly have been fabricated.

You then became conciliatory and suggested that I contact Volokh (or the author of the post) directly. I attempted to do just that; neither man responded (assuming I even have their correct e-mail addresses).

Long story short, you *still* haven’t presented any substantive, documentary evidence, and despite your apparent emotional investment in the topic, you clearly can’t be bothered to follow up on any of Volokh’s evidence *yourself,* as I’ve suggested you do on more than one occasion. I’m not the only one here who can perform web searches or pick up a telephone, and I think it’s high time you did just that rather than continuing to demand that others dance to your tune.

“Last time we discussed this, I suggested you actually contact Lindgren and see if he could not provide you with copies (if he had them of the articles he cites). If you haven’t, perhaps I will.”

I’ve made the attempt, and I recommend you do the same. While you’re at it, why don’t you also try substantiating some of the claims he made in that post, as I’ve asked you to do more than once?

“As I said, I have a hard time imagining how a prominent law professor would publicly cite articles as evidence (with the name of the paper and dates) that did not actually exist – to publicly make things up, in other words”

So do I, which is why I haven’t accused him of making anything up in the first place.

I’ve questioned his evidence and I’ve suggested that you try to follow up on some of his claims as well.

“But you apparently do not.”

You are a liar, sir. I have never once suggested that any of Lindgren’s ‘evidence’ was made up.

“That has been the main point of contention between us. I am surprised that, if Lindgren was lying, he has not been debunked by now. Perhaps no one cares enough to investigate. Or maybe he wasn’t lying. Ina any case, we cannot both be right, just as Lembcke and Lindgren cannot be right. Since the former is essentially trying to prove a negative, all that is required to invalidate his claims is to validate even some of Lindgren’s.”

Which I’ve challenged you to do more than once.

“Let me see if I cannot validate two or three of his sources independently (if I am unable to contact Lindgren). Obviously, it will be hard to do if archived articles are not freely available on the Internet. It will require calling the publishers (if they still exist) and seeing if they will mail me a copy of the article(s) or paying for subscriptions.”

I wish you good luck in your search. Had you been as forthcoming and collegial in conducting your own search several months ago, I’d probably have a much better opinion of you today.

For that matter, Tundra, very little of government is actually about solving problems, but is rather more about preserving a status quo by making gestures and nice sounds to the people sort of in the manner of a snake charmer, Their goal is to simply make a status quo which is based on the privilege of certain groups at the expense of other groups last on into the future indefinitely. And to the extent that they undertake certain actions, it is almost always in the interest of some larger project to re-consolidate their power (e.g. the US ruling elite’s efforts to end Jim Crow in the South in the 1950s was not in the end so much about moral outrage at the injustice of that system but was more about consolidating the global project of capitalism in the Cold War when the presence of such injustice right in capitalism’s backyard as it were began to pose major problems in furthering the solidarity that was needed abroad to advance that struggle).

” abortion (he has consistently opposed it even in cases of rape and incest)”

last time I checked, SecDef doesn’t have any say in the abortion debate, so his opinions on the issue are moot.

what it DOES demonstrate (yet again), that the Dems are willing to work with people who have differing opinions than they do.

The other half of your brain.

“and your wrong about who you think I am, I wish I had your crystal ball.”

Never said the moniker you normally post under.

Just described the characteristic: ” who just knows he’s saying something stunningly stupid but just can’t help himself”

Maher will donate $5 million to ‘Hair Club’ for proof Trump not ‘spawn’ of orangutan

HBO comedian Bill Maher on Monday mocked Donald Trump’s absurd offer of $5 million if President Barack Obama could prove that he was a U.S. citizen by pledging $5 million to the “Hair Club for Men” or “Institute for Incorrigible Douchebaggery” if the billionaire could simply provide evidence that his mother didn’t have sex with an orangutan.

In an interview on NBC’s Tonight Show, Maher told Jay Leno that he was glad Trump “lied” and never kept scheduled appearances on his HBO show “because he turned out to be such a terrible racist.”

“I’m not looking for a feud with Donald Trump and I certainly wish only the best for syphilitic monkey who does his Twitter feed,” he explained.

““” Mick, would you rather the checks go to Wall Street & the Bankers?”’

I’d rather they go to charity, or research, or building roads. But why do you ask? It seems like such a silly question…

Welcome-Occupation:
For that matter, Tundra, very little of government is actually about solving problems, but is rather more about preserving a status quo by making gestures and nice sounds to the people sort of in the manner of a snake charmer,

Say it ain’t so….
(just hush…..ya might be accused of being a domestic terrorist)

One of the reasons I, and Jay, support Obama’s selection is we voted for him, we think like him and his selections many times reflect our and, more important, the majority of the nation’s beliefs. The right has no problem stopping a train full of people, so one passenger can get on or off, to us that train is going our direction and to our destination. That is why we both the ticket in the first place.
