There’s nothing quite like an El Camino with an eight-track stereo

Elizabeth Cook, a woman with some rather odd ties to Georgia and Atlanta, opens tonight at the Variety for the very funny, witty Todd Snider.

Most of Snider’s material isn’t suitable for posting on this blog, but go look him up — you’ll enjoy the sense of humor.

But back to Cook. She grew up in Florida, the daughter of a moonshiner and welder who learned the latter craft serving time at the federal penitentiary here in Atlanta, just a few miles from where she’ll be playing tonight. She’s a graduate of Georgia Southern, with degrees in accounting and computer information systems. I’ve seen her refer to herself as a math geek who took calculus classes in college for fun, and because she thought they’d be an easy “A”.

Here she is, a hard-to-categorize musician performing her ode to another classic American eccentricity, the El Camino:

It’s what I get for working all day and taking a moment to refresh and see a new blog instead of getting caught up in discussions of who will or will not be a dog in the fiscal cliff / country debt / gotta do something debates.

An El Camino? Bill Clinton used to own one.

Speaking to a group of GM employees, Clinton joked, “It had astro-turf in the back. I don’t want to tell you what the astro-turf was for.”

Off topic, but not overtly political anyway–I’ve thought of Tarantino as kind of a one-joke bore, but this piece by Amanda Marcotte has me thinking I might want to see Django after all.

Quentin Tarantino has probably watched every implausible, silly Western that American audiences have eaten up for decades, and he’s now making a movie that lays down a challenge: Can you suspend your disbelief for a former slave character as well as you can for the fantastical versions of former Confederates, outlaws, and gunslingers we’ve all watched before? If you can watch a movie like “Gone With the Wind” that whitewashes history, why not watch one that does so for the good guys, for once?

(I seem to recall a few of the regulars here have seen the film already, figured they might find this take somewhat interesting, anyway.)

Reel to reel…story behind that Essex earlier and why I said it was drug related…had a bud back in the dayl, super-super genius, got all kinds of scholarships to Ivy League,..he went, realized, he said, that no matter what he did, he’s still be a colored boy from Mississippi in their eyes. He came home, put “Rock On” on reel-to-reel, and sat on the front porch smoking his joint and listening to it over and over and over…then one day he just got up and went…never knew where, but wherever, “rock on…”

I thought this was funny when I read it! Not music I know, but…….you gotta laugh sometimes to stop from crying!

Trent Arsenault of Fremont has fathered 14 children since he began donating sperm in 2006, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday.

However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration told the man to stop giving away his sperm, or face charges.

Arsenault contends he’s being targeted by the FDA because he has a Web site that promotes himself and his willingness to donate his sperm.

“What the FDA is doing infringes on reproductive rights. The government is reaching into the bedroom,” Arsenault said. “There’s no precedence for my case. Whatever happens to me kind of sets the future up for all the other people in these situations — the couples plus the donors.”

Read more: http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2011/12/19/Sperm-donor-feeling-heat-from-feds/UPI-53151324330263/#ixzz2H2yJ8JJx

About 8-tracks–I never “got” them. Oh, I happened to have a player as part of my crappy all-in-one home stereo on which I played all my vinyl, back in the day, but I figured when I got a car if it was going to have any kind of a tape player, that’d be a cassette. Never understood the appeal of the format.

That said, occasionally I’d find a marked-down album as an 8-track, and once in a while due to the formatting you’d find a surprise on it. That was the case of this one Rod Stewart solo album, which had this amazing version of “What Made Milwaukee Famous”, that you oughta hear if you haven’t.

So I next went to buy a 8-track tape, and it turned out to be The Best of Bread. Some of you may not recall Bread, but they were all over the radio in their day. One of the founders quit over a feud about royalties. Seems like everything a member named David Gates wrote turned out to be a hit and he got the writer’s royalty. Here’s one of my favorites:

math geek who took calculus classes in college for fun, and because she thought they’d be an easy “A”

As a senior in high school who was a bit of a geek, I took a college calculus class that was offered to seniors with a recommendation from their teachers. That class was hard. When we had exams, the instructor would leave the room. We could use notes, books, forms groups, whatever. If there would have been smart phones back in 1978 he probably would have let us use them. Made no difference. Nobody ever aced one of his exams. Lot of brains in that class, but none of them looked like that.

When Newsweek's Women Said 'No'

January 5th, 2013
7:36 am

The revolution changed America. It also rocked the newsroom.

On a Monday morning in March 1970, Newsweek’s cover on “Women in Revolt” hit the newsstands. It was the first serious treatment of the women’s movement by a major newsmagazine. Ms. magazine, the bible of the movement, would not be launched until the following year. But any satisfaction the male editors might have enjoyed about their enterprising journalism was dispelled by a press conference held that same morning by the women of Newsweek to announce they were suing the magazine for gender discrimination.
The fallout from that lawsuit, which the women won, chipped away at the “Mad Men” culture that had reigned for so long, bringing women into the conversation and changing the way Newsweek reported on a broad array of issues that would over the decades transform life as I had known it.
Attitudes about women were pretty primitive back then. Before becoming a reporter, I was a girl Friday in the Atlanta bureau; when Katharine Graham, Newsweek’s publisher, visited, we had to take her up the back stairs to the room we had reserved for lunch at the stodgy Commerce Club because women weren’t allowed. We laughed at the absurdity of it even as changing the system didn’t yet seem an option. In New York, Peter Goldman, the magazine’s premiere writer, remembers Mrs. Graham talking about how, after her husband, Phil, died, she was thrust into the leadership of Newsweek and The Washington Post, and the lone woman on numerous corporate boards; when board members were polled on some company policy, he recalls her saying, they would go around the table and skip right over her.

East Cobb – 10:21

And yet, most of the professions and trades that offer a reasonably secure future require math and mechanical abilities.

Unfortunately, for most of us, math is hard and we can’t earn a living in these fields.

So, we now have a strange situation where millions are still out of work and conversely, some companies have jobs still open because they can’t find the skilled labor needed. These jobs are mechanically oriented.

So, the percentage of us with high science, math and mechanical aptitudes is unchanging while the number of trades and professions requiring these skills is increasing.

I really don’t see any way to solve this problem.

Unfortunately, while a worthy and necessary endeavor, the recoveries here as predicatable are small ball. We can expect nothing more from BO and congress…Small ball…60 billion a year in revenue increases by the central tenet of DEM plan…necessary but the deficit will grow despite this bunting-the-runner over crap..

I found the answer to how much total debt we can sustain…it’s not 20 trillion, 30 trillion or the like…answer is that no economists on either side can or will venture an estimate…

Why don’t he idiots GOP give dopes on Left all they want? Give BO and the like a 30 trillion debt ceiling…see how that works..

Well when you need proof of the idiotic claims of so many of the conned and the GOP, yesterday we had posters claiming the “tsunami of regulations” was being released. Putting aside the GOP regulations in Virginia and other states actually intended to put some out of business, the specific whine was about new FDA food regulation.

The rules, the most sweeping food safety guidelines in decades, would require farmers to take new precautions against contamination, to include making sure workers’ hands are washed, irrigation water is clean, and that animals stay out of fields. Food manufacturers will have to submit food safety plans to the government to show they are keeping their operations clean.

The long-overdue regulations could cost businesses close to half a billion dollars a year to implement, but are expected to reduce the estimated 3,000 deaths a year from foodborne illness.

So once again we see that the GOP and the conned will go to extremes to “protect” fetuses but once they are born, any company is welcome to make a profit and to ignore safety, even if it kills those babies and people. How sad.

Common Sense
He’s too controversial in too many quarters and would be so under the microscope and divisive to prove effective in one of the most sensitive posts in the cabinet.

There’ll be plenty of two stepping and talking out of both sides of their mouths coming up on the Hegel nomination. He’s an anti-Semitic homophobe, with a nice little record on both. I have no idea what is going on in President Obama’s mind, but he just plummeted in my estimation with this nomination.

The critics of Israeli policy are going to be coming in full force defending him and cheering him on as a Bibi nemesis, which would be fine enough, and claiming that criticism of policies of the state of Israel do not automatically equate with anti Semitism. That would be fine and dandy except in Hegel’s case that doesn’t hold. Let those who know him best in that arena, the Jewish community of Nebraska. speak to that:

http://www.algemeiner.com/2012/12/21/nebraska-jews-recall-senator-chuck-hagel-as-unfriendly-and-unmovable-on-israel-didnt-give-a-damn-about-the-jewish-community/

As for the homophobic contention, he has a not so stellar voting record there. He’s no friend of the gay community and that’s pretty clear. He gets a solid zero rating.

Hagel is/was a hard core Republican; there is much about him to be concerned with. (forgive me OREP!)

And as SecDef he has a VERY small voice in all matters not related to the State Dept.

And IMUO, there is a tremendous upside to him:

In November 2005, Hagel defended his criticism of the Iraq war stating “To question your government is not unpatriotic — to not question your government is unpatriotic.”

In December 2005, in reference to Bush, the Republican Party, and the PATRIOT Act, Hagel stated “I took an oath of office to the Constitution, I didn’t take an oath of office to my party or my president.”

In July 2006, Hagel criticized the Bush administration on its handling of the Israel-Lebanon issue saying “The sickening slaughter on both sides must end and it must end now. President Bush must call for an immediate cease-fire. This madness must stop.” He also said “Our relationship with Israel is special and historic,… But it need not and cannot be at the expense of our Arab and Muslim relationships.”

Following heavy Republican losses in the 2006 midterm election, Hagel penned an editorial in The Washington Post highly critical of military strategies both employed and proposed for Iraq. He wrote that “There will be no victory or defeat for the United States in Iraq,” and called for a “phased troop withdrawal”. According to a SurveyUSA poll, in August 2006 Hagel has a 10% higher approval rating among Nebraska Democrats than Republicans.

In November 2007, he rated the Bush administration “the lowest in capacity, in capability, in policy, in consensus—almost every area” of any presidency in the last forty years.

Here’s the question you should all be asking yourselves. Are you ready for a full-blown, Viet Nam type, regional war in Syria that involves many of the other nearby countries? A war that is not “comfortable” like the ones we have now. A war where you or your children are required to go and fight in. A war that devastates our economy (even worse than the previous two). A war, that like Viet Nam, where we suffer a humiliating defeat. Would you like to see and end to Jewish-centric neocon control of our government regardless of who or which party is elected? These are the uncomfortable questions that we, as a nation, need to be asking ourselves. Do you really give a rat’s hind quarter who the f*ck is president of Syria?

But overall, what’s distinctive about the press coverage of Obama is the absence of fault-finding, criticism, and dogged questioning. And when Obama makes excuses, as he often does, the media tend to echo them.

No president in my lifetime has been covered so favorably and so gingerly. Never has the press corps been so unwilling to pursue stories that might cast the president in an unflattering light. As a group, the media pride themselves on taking an adversarial approach to politicians and government officials. But in Obama’s case, the press acts like a helpmate…”

Mr. President and Democratic supporters, please tell us again how we must continue to raise taxes and spend on programs for the poor because they can not do any better.

“they’re on the dole — and watching the pole.

Welfare recipients took out cash at bars, liquor stores, X-rated video shops, hookah parlors and even strip clubs — where they presumably spent their taxpayer money on lap dances rather than diapers, a Post investigation found.

A database of 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from January 2011 to July 2012, obtained by The Post through a Freedom of Information request, showed welfare recipients using their EBT cards to make dozens of cash withdrawals at ATMs inside Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn; the Blue Door Video porn shop in the East Village; The Anchor, a sleek SoHo lounge; the Patriot Saloon in TriBeCa; and Drinks Galore, a liquor distributor in The Bronx.”

“State Sen. Tom Libous (R-Binghamton) passed a bill in his chamber in June that would outlaw welfare withdrawals at gambling dens, strip clubs and other venues of vice, but the measure is gathering dust in the Democratic-controlled Assembly. ”

You really do need to read the actual article posted so that you do not look so uninformed. The article states that it was TANF benefits being used and not Food Stamp because Food Stamp benefits can only be used on food. They did nothing illegal but is liquor, porn and lap dances what we (the taxpayer) wants our hard earned money to be used for.

It looks like from your statements you have no problem with people we are supporting to use their government money for these types of reasons. I am sure you are representative of many democrats and it just shows how morally bankrupt a large part of the party really is.

What you do not seem to understand is that the billionaires will continue to have the same amount of money no matter what the government does. The only ones that get hurt is the middle class when they do not get any raises, pay more for insurance, less benefits like employer contributions to 401K and maybe not even a job if it is going to cut into the billionaires money. #1: When the middle class gets screwed out of pay raises and such, it is not the responsibility of the government to provide those things. That is purely a private sector matter. Any government involvement is mostly due to the wealthy lobbying Congress to pass laws that benefit them and not necessarily the middle class.

#2: The love of money is the root of all evil. If some billionaire thinks it’s better for him to earn $10 billion while screwing his employees instead of making $9 billion and rewarding his employees with that other billion, then he might want to practicing how to squeeze through the eye of a needle.

I agree with you on your first statement. #2 When the government raises their taxes $1 billion then they are not going to actually take the billion dollar cut. They will get their money other ways. (historical fact).

Another example: If I company that has a gross income of $500,000 per year (I file my taxes via individual income taxes) with a profit margin of 20% and now I have to pay 4 1/2 more taxes now then my profits go down from $100,000 per year to $85,000. I have two employees that I pay $30,000 each. Do you expect me to continue to run my business making $15,000 less, do I layoff one of my employees to make the around the same amount of money, do I raise my prices to cover the tax increase or do make one of my workers part time and raise my prices?

I see you got the Capt. Picard goalposts with enhanced warp drive for Christmas. Your example shifted from billions to thousands faster than Usain Bolt running the anchor leg on the 4X100 relay. When you shift that quick, two things come to mind. First, you don’t even remember what your original statement was. I find that hard to believe since it’s sitting on this same page. The other thought is that you know your point was moot and you tried to make it valid by shifting the goalposts. That seems very plausible given your track record here.
