Elizabeth Cook, a woman with some rather odd ties to Georgia and Atlanta, opens tonight at the Variety for the very funny, witty Todd Snider.
Most of Snider’s material isn’t suitable for posting on this blog, but go look him up — you’ll enjoy the sense of humor.
But back to Cook. She grew up in Florida, the daughter of a moonshiner and welder who learned the latter craft serving time at the federal penitentiary here in Atlanta, just a few miles from where she’ll be playing tonight. She’s a graduate of Georgia Southern, with degrees in accounting and computer information systems. I’ve seen her refer to herself as a math geek who took calculus classes in college for fun, and because she thought they’d be an easy “A”.
Here she is, a hard-to-categorize musician performing her ode to another classic American eccentricity, the El Camino:

It’s what I get for working all day and taking a moment to refresh and see a new blog instead of getting caught up in discussions of who will or will not be a dog in the fiscal cliff / country debt / gotta do something debates.

An El Camino? Bill Clinton used to own one.
Speaking to a group of GM employees, Clinton joked, “It had astro-turf in the back. I don’t want to tell you what the astro-turf was for.”

Off topic, but not overtly political anyway–I’ve thought of Tarantino as kind of a one-joke bore, but this piece by Amanda Marcotte has me thinking I might want to see Django after all.
Quentin Tarantino has probably watched every implausible, silly Western that American audiences have eaten up for decades, and he’s now making a movie that lays down a challenge: Can you suspend your disbelief for a former slave character as well as you can for the fantastical versions of former Confederates, outlaws, and gunslingers we’ve all watched before? If you can watch a movie like “Gone With the Wind” that whitewashes history, why not watch one that does so for the good guys, for once?
(I seem to recall a few of the regulars here have seen the film already, figured they might find this take somewhat interesting, anyway.)

Reel to reel…story behind that Essex earlier and why I said it was drug related…had a bud back in the dayl, super-super genius, got all kinds of scholarships to Ivy League,..he went, realized, he said, that no matter what he did, he’s still be a colored boy from Mississippi in their eyes. He came home, put “Rock On” on reel-to-reel, and sat on the front porch smoking his joint and listening to it over and over and over…then one day he just got up and went…never knew where, but wherever, “rock on…”

I thought this was funny when I read it! Not music I know, but…….you gotta laugh sometimes to stop from crying!
Trent Arsenault of Fremont has fathered 14 children since he began donating sperm in 2006, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday.
However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration told the man to stop giving away his sperm, or face charges.
Arsenault contends he’s being targeted by the FDA because he has a Web site that promotes himself and his willingness to donate his sperm.
“What the FDA is doing infringes on reproductive rights. The government is reaching into the bedroom,” Arsenault said. “There’s no precedence for my case. Whatever happens to me kind of sets the future up for all the other people in these situations — the couples plus the donors.”

About 8-tracks–I never “got” them. Oh, I happened to have a player as part of my crappy all-in-one home stereo on which I played all my vinyl, back in the day, but I figured when I got a car if it was going to have any kind of a tape player, that’d be a cassette. Never understood the appeal of the format.
That said, occasionally I’d find a marked-down album as an 8-track, and once in a while due to the formatting you’d find a surprise on it. That was the case of this one Rod Stewart solo album, which had this amazing version of “What Made Milwaukee Famous”, that you oughta hear if you haven’t.

Well, back when I was alot younger, in my very early 30s, I bought my first new car, a 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix with all the doo-dads, including an 8-track player. So I next went to buy a 8-track tape, and it turned out to be The Best of Bread. Some of you may not recall Bread, but they were all over the radio in their day. One of the founders quit over a feud about royalties. Seems like everything a member named David Gates wrote turned out to be a hit and he got the writer’s royalty. Here’s one of my favorites:
