In cultures around the world, the arrival of a new year means more than the mere changing of the calendar. It is a time of cleansing and renewal, an opportunity to set past disappointments aside and to look ahead with optimism.
But let’s be honest: These are not the easiest of times in which to set aside fear in favor of optimism.
The financial meltdown of four or five years ago lingers like a hangover from a holiday party that went on much too long. The economy continues its slow recovery; Georgia’s unemployment rate last month was 8.5 percent, down a full percentage point from a year earlier and down almost two full percentage points from 2010. But it is sign of diminished expectations when a statewide jobless rate of 8.5 percent is considered evidence of progress.
And as too many of our fellow Americans know, those cold, impersonal numbers hide deep personal pain, loss and frustration. The American dream and its inherent promise that hard work will be rewarded no longer seem plausible for many, particularly the young. Only the foolish would try to deny that profound, unsettling changes are under way, and for one of the few times in our nation’s history, parents have cause to wonder whether their children and grandchildren will live in a world of reduced opportunity.
On the other hand, anger and disappointment can become self-fulfilling prophecies if indulged too long, and a backward-looking fixation on what used to be will blind you to what can be. That is as true for nations as it is for individuals. Previous generations of Americans faced times much more challenging than these and overcame them, and there is no reason to believe that we are not their legitimate and equally capable heirs.
At the moment, though, such context seems in short supply. In a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, just 40 percent of Americans describe themselves as hopeful about the course of world events in the coming year, while 56 percent described themselves as fearful. Unfortunately, a good part of that dismal showing can be explained as the aftermath of a deeply divisive, hard-fought election campaign that both political parties treated as a life-and-death struggle.
According to the Post poll, just 18 percent of Republicans report that they are hopeful about the course of world events in 2013, compared to 38 percent of independents and 61 percent of Democrats; 72 percent of Republicans describe themselves as fearful about what the next year will bring.
In the political world, such numbers have a way of compounding themselves. As Ronald Reagan knew better than anyone, and as the Democrats learned from Reagan the hard way, a party animated by the belief that this is a country in decline will find it difficult to rally others to its cause, creating a spiral that is hard to reverse.
It’s also important to remember that people of all political persuasions tend to exaggerate the importance of government and who runs it. Except in times of war, and at moments of economic crisis such as that of 2008-2009, government actually plays a relatively small role in the course of human events. At times we like to believe otherwise; we like to believe that acting through government, we exert direct control our own fate, but most of the that time, that simply isn’t true.
Faith in ourselves, each other and our country — or the lack of it — is far more important.

“Well, I hate to rain on your parade, but the federal budget is not, in any shape, form or fashion, equivalent to a household budget.”
Perhaps not. But it sure as hell doesn’t stop economists on both the left and the right from using it as an example. I know when I was in college at least 2 of my econ professors used it as an example.
Economists use simplistic, easy to understand examples like that all the time. Nothing wrong with that and in many instances the examples are good examples with the main difference just being one of scale.
I just watched my favorite left wing economist Yanis Varoufakis do an hour and 15 minute lecture on c-span. He used at least 5 simplistic examples just like the federal debt/U.S. household example. Matter of fact in his latest book and in the lecture I just watched he compares the U.S. trade deficit to the minotaur of Greek mythology. Simplistic examples yes. But they make sense and get the point across in an easily understandable manner.
After all not all of us can readily understand everything with superior powers of logic and reasoning the way that Indigo can.

You need to familiarize yourself with the “plans of salvation” I was specifically referencing in my post. I said nothing about you. But I do believe you cannot be “in Christ” without being his disciple (or apprentice). The word Christian means “little Christ”. So I don’t know how one can claim NOT to be a Christian and be in Christ. You’ll need to explain that to me. And unlike I guess most Jews, I do believe you can be a Jewish Christian.

On this eve of 2013 I hope you all would look at your life and give thanks for those who love you and those you are lucky enough to give love.
I’m going to ask that you indulge me in listing the things for which I am thankful…If you feel you have to respond negatively, please just bypass my post…
I am thankful for a man that loves me even when I don’t deserve to be loved…
A man that just by watching me learned that I love double over potato chips and will always pull those out of the bag for me.
A man that will not allow anyone in the house to eat the wings off the chicken/turkey becuase he knows they are the only parts I will eat.
A man who turns my car around every night (well he doesn’t want me to run over the drive way lights) so that I am facing out.
Step sons who call me…
Step granddaughters who are glad to see..
A good relationship with the mother of my stepsons..
Having my mother until age of 40 and still having my dad
Siblings that still believe they have to take care of me (I’m the youngest)
Nieces/Nephews that love me.
Happy New Year to You All…Hope you can find the love in your life…Has nothing to do with the man in the White House.

That was before the Blue-Shirts branched out into bus stations, train stations, malls and everywhere else.
But anyhoo………….Now that you mentioned Doctor Ron Paul………go ahead and take your dose of decency.
I know as a Federalie………its hard medicine.
From Dr. Pauls New Year’s message-to the Federalie Gang of 525———
.
“I also urge my colleagues to end unconstitutional wars overseas. Stop the drone strikes. Stop the covert activities and the meddling in the internal affairs of other nations. Strive to observe good faith and justice towards all nations, as George Washington admonished. We are only making more enemies, wasting lives and bankrupting ourselves with the neoconservative interventionist mindset that endorses preemptive war that now dominates both parties.
All foreign aid should end, which is blatantly unconstitutional. While it may be a relatively small part of our federal budget, for many countries it is a large part of theirs and it creates perverse incentives for both our friends and enemies. There is no way members of Congress can know or understand the political, economic, legal and social realities in the many nations to which they send taxpayers’ dollars.
Congress needs to stop accumulating more debt. U.S. debt monetized by the Federal Reserve is the true threat to our national security. Revisiting the parameters of Article 1 Section 8 would be a good start.
Congress should resolve to respect personal liberty and free markets. Learn more about the free market and how it regulates commerce and produces greater prosperity ever than any legislation or regulation.
Understand that economic freedom is freedom.

I agree entirely with that. From the time Ugh came down from the trees we’ve been doing just that. And that quest for order and meaning has sent us to the stars. And, if we were able to have “the answers,” would we really want that?

One of the more rewarding aspects of 2012 was the groundswell of protest that came back to this country.
Started out by the kids, of course; but then joined all around the country (and globe!) by middle aged and even the elderly. Jews, gentiles, atheists, rich, poor, professionals, students, housewives and veterans; black and white and every other hue!
And I believe that the misguided right wing hostility towards and wholesale slurs against those countless Americans was part of why the GOP got beaten so badly in November.
And for them, I’ll keep quoting a hero of mine…
If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. ~Frederick Douglass, 1857

Flying IS a privilege as there is no inherent right to fly or travel by any other means. Even such a “freedomist” such as you should know that. I guess you haven’t gotten to the Good Doctor Reverend Brother Paul’s lesson on flying yet. I think that’s on tape #9 if you’re still playing the cassettes. It’s obvious that your thinking is just as dated as I haven’t worked for TSA since 2007, and you didn’t know me then.

That was good. Its the 2nd time today you made me laugh out loud today. You’re on a roll.
BTW I hadn’t had a chance to go back and view those Argentinian films but will do so when I can. The last 2 that I saw were based in Argentina with I think Argentinian actors but they were speaking English so I’m not sure as to how “Argentinian” they were.
In the credits there were Hispanic, Italian, and some German sounding names so to me they seemed like Argenine films. Just strange that they were in English. One was a really interesting plot about an author that had a grand masterpiece that he never completed. His little brother came to visit when his ship was in port. Several interesting plots and subplots in that one.
And then I watched one where a couple lives way down in the southern tip of tieera del fuego in a rural setting. A guys car breaks down and he walks to their house and he and the husband coverse about fixing his car in the living room. Meanwhile the wife in the bedroom hears everything and realizes the guy was her rapist/torturer going back to the dirty war. Things got real interesting there with a turning of the tables.
Can’t remember the names of the films- I think one may have been the sargon, salton or sardon sea. Something like that. Not sargasso.

Not cool. I’m not down with criticizing someone just because their paycheck comes from the govt. And while I like Neal Boortz I want to punch his ass every time I hear him rail about “govt employees”. I’ve known a lot of “govt employees” who work every bit as hard or harder than private sector employees.
I disdain govt bureaucracy because of its inefficiencies in allocating resources and because by its very nature a bureaucracy is going to be inefficient. But that doesn’t mean I diss a man who works for the govt as somehow being less of a man just because of where he gets his paycheck. That is not right.

josef,
Dang. I never thought of that. I got both of them from netflix when I was just searching for good foreign films. I saw a third film that was very moving- I think it was a French film-subtitles. Anyway, it had several plots and subplots and I believe like the film you sent me it had some tie ins to discrimination and such. In the movie a son was being accussed of a serious crime he didn’t committ. The important politician who did commit the crime was visiting his father to convince him to tell his son to turn himself in for a lenient sentence. The father knew the deal and told the pol that if his son was innocent he would slash his own throat. And he did. The self torment the pol went through it was kind of a twist on crime and punishment by doestovesky if you’ve ever read that.

“The sooner we the people get rid of your jobs and make you actually work for a living instead of molesting old people and children the better off we will be as a nation”
What a disgusting thing to say td. Especially from someone who wears his Christianity on his sleeve, as you do.

“Like I thought. Your loser government employee attitude has been well documented now on these blogs.”
td,
I hope you’ll take a break and think about what you’re saying about people. My mom retired from the state, my brother is one of them “govt employees” as a colonel in the Army, and my sister in law is a teacher. With the things you’re saying it feels like you just slapped my mom upside the head.
Hate the bureaucracy and inefficiency all you want. But take it easy on the people who get up and go to work every day looking to do a good job as best they know how whether they work a govt job or private sector job.
Keep Up the Good Fight!

It doesn’t seem like many of our conned are celebrating the results of “sticking to their conservative principles”. Going off the cliff was their heart’s desire rather than actually compromise.

Well, true, unless they work for the EPA, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Energy, HHS, Housing, and such…

Just Bro and the people like him with the “I know what is best because I am a government worker” attitude. You could get rid of half the Federal Government bureaucrats and you would never miss them.

josef,
I’ve kinda noticed these last few years that these small indie films and small foreign films tend to be very well written and acted. I guess its the same reason that in years past most black films like the Color Purple, some Spike Lee movies before he became big, etc. were always good films. If you’re going to appeal to a wider base and you don’t have the big budget money for a film like a Titanic then you damn sure better have a well written story with good acting. I’ve noticed that seems to hold true a lot.

Y’all take it easy on td. If he actually knew what I do for a living, he would already know my job is explicitly spelled out in the Constitution, and there is nothing he can do to change that. I can only surmise his feelings are hurt because I refuse to buy the crap sammich he’s selling.
Contrary to his belief, I have never proclaimed to know what is best. I do, however, know BS when I see it and I will call it out without hesitation.

You tickle me. I’m one of those public service employees. You have no idea what it takes to deal with your kind. The good part is that you’re generally few and far between and we can smell you coming from a mile off. You provide us with that chance to “smile in your face” and make sure we go by the book while we tie you into a knot just for the stress relief!

Bang! The Bayou Bengals strike!
One of, if not the best hit I’ve ever seen, and it happened smack dab, right in front of my eyes! And other than TMac’s incredible TD run, it was in an otherwise devastating loss.

“Just Bro and the people like him with the “I know what is best because I am a government worker” attitude.”
td,
I hear ya and I have the same criticisms but I think they should be reserved for the bureaucrats and policy makers as opposed to rank and file employees. Good example is my sister in law. She works hard as a teacher and when I was home for Xmas she told me that last year that final grades for public schools had to be in around May 20th. School then lasted another 2-3 weeks even though final grades were done and given. So students had a long lame duck session knowing nothing counted. Incredibly dumb, dumb, dumb. But that’s all on the idiot(s)in charge and has nothing to do with the regular employees.
Anyway, its all cool. That just bothered me and practically nothing on this blog ever bothers me.

As for that “lame duck” session…many, if not most, teachers will tell you that it’s following the standardized tests in April that they get the most teaching done, since they’re really teaching and not preparing for “the test.” The teachers are relaxed, the students are relaxed, and they can actually enjoy what it is they’re doing…
