With New Year, a chance to dump ‘negative waves’

In cultures around the world, the arrival of a new year means more than the mere changing of the calendar. It is a time of cleansing and renewal, an opportunity to set past disappointments aside and to look ahead with optimism.

But let’s be honest: These are not the easiest of times in which to set aside fear in favor of optimism.

The financial meltdown of four or five years ago lingers like a hangover from a holiday party that went on much too long. The economy continues its slow recovery; Georgia’s unemployment rate last month was 8.5 percent, down a full percentage point from a year earlier and down almost two full percentage points from 2010. But it is sign of diminished expectations when a statewide jobless rate of 8.5 percent is considered evidence of progress.

And as too many of our fellow Americans know, those cold, impersonal numbers hide deep personal pain, loss and frustration. The American dream and its inherent promise that hard work will be rewarded no longer seem plausible for many, particularly the young. Only the foolish would try to deny that profound, unsettling changes are under way, and for one of the few times in our nation’s history, parents have cause to wonder whether their children and grandchildren will live in a world of reduced opportunity.

On the other hand, anger and disappointment can become self-fulfilling prophecies if indulged too long, and a backward-looking fixation on what used to be will blind you to what can be. That is as true for nations as it is for individuals. Previous generations of Americans faced times much more challenging than these and overcame them, and there is no reason to believe that we are not their legitimate and equally capable heirs.

At the moment, though, such context seems in short supply. In a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, just 40 percent of Americans describe themselves as hopeful about the course of world events in the coming year, while 56 percent described themselves as fearful. Unfortunately, a good part of that dismal showing can be explained as the aftermath of a deeply divisive, hard-fought election campaign that both political parties treated as a life-and-death struggle.

According to the Post poll, just 18 percent of Republicans report that they are hopeful about the course of world events in 2013, compared to 38 percent of independents and 61 percent of Democrats; 72 percent of Republicans describe themselves as fearful about what the next year will bring.

In the political world, such numbers have a way of compounding themselves. As Ronald Reagan knew better than anyone, and as the Democrats learned from Reagan the hard way, a party animated by the belief that this is a country in decline will find it difficult to rally others to its cause, creating a spiral that is hard to reverse.

It’s also important to remember that people of all political persuasions tend to exaggerate the importance of government and who runs it. Except in times of war, and at moments of economic crisis such as that of 2008-2009, government actually plays a relatively small role in the course of human events. At times we like to believe otherwise; we like to believe that acting through government, we exert direct control our own fate, but most of the that time, that simply isn’t true.

Faith in ourselves, each other and our country — or the lack of it — is far more important.

Some of the parents had thought I got hit in the leg until I didn’t get back up. Most of the baseball dads joked me for a while after taking that one. I refused to sit on an ice pack in the dugout though. We had those chain link dugouts, and the thought of everyone seeing that was too embarassing then… damned ego…

I don’t want to see Sinkwich banned, I want him to write a book, take a picture and scream it from the rooftops. The more the right attempts to sell that nonsensical claptrap the closer we will get to returning the Republican party to relevance as people continue the rejection of the extremists that began with this election.

HEAR, HEAR!!

After thirty years of this awful, fake conservatism, it turns out that all we had to do was give the Uncle Sam haters enough time (and rope) and they would do the rest.

However, I do have one relevant correction to that otherwise great post – the right wing fanatics really started tanking before the Reign of Error ended. To wit, they got absolutely humiliated, annihilated and decimated in 2006 and 2008 as well as in 2012.

I don’t see that trend changing anytime soon. Does anyone here?

No. I don’t know how anyone who professes to believe in the Biblical God can be an advocate for birth control via abortion and gay rights. This is a democracy, of course, and accepting what the majority says (despite your own opposition) is different from advocacy.

“Seems the Republican were against a lot of the good books teaching this election cycle.”

You need to be more specific, there. And you should know that though I am registered as a Republican (because that is the way, for want of choice, I usually vote), I have never given money to the party or attended any rally. Bookman’s piece is a little disconcerting. Notice his Jeffersonian “government has little to do with the course of human events”. Jay even worked the phrase “self-fulfilling prophecy” which, when hyphenated and then coupled with “the course of human events” always makes one sound sound. (and wise). This piece must be a self-stewing reflection of egg nog and mimosas. Jay must have had a coupld of slugs, and then saw the rerun of the Dirty Dozen bit and then realized he could match it to the Washington Post poll about forward sentiment. Jay’s entire blog career relies on the government being a bigger and bigger part of everyone’s life. Healthcare. Social Security. Taxes. Defense. Infrastructure. Jay’s credibility will survive this piece, because we’re all stewed too, with rum cake, gin, and you know what from you know where (colorado). Miller Time on New Year’s Eve is no time to be a philosophizing contrarian. I mean, Jay even quoted Reagan. Snap out of it, sir! Happy New Year. Drink. and save bits like this for April Fools Day.

You really should study the NT before making these kind of pronouncements – for they display a clear ignorance of the scriptures. Jesus had really next to nothing to say about government. All he said was directed at individuals. He taught that individuals should love their neighbor as themselves, feed the hungry, clothe the naked and attend to the sick. He taught that is is hard for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of heaven. He said next to nothing about war, except the war each one of us is enlisted in when we are either for or against him. He did not hate homosexuals but rather any sin that we deliberately (not unintentionally) commit, day after day. He hated divorce and said that there are no grounds for it (and then getting remarried) except adultery (I really don’t who decriminalized adultery and watered down divorce laws in this country, but I see that as a big problem).

Thanks for the thoughtful response. But I think you are misinterpreting this passage. What is in view is the day of judgement and the Greek work translated “nations” (ethnos) means “race” or “culture” (as in Gentiles versus Jews). I think the burden is upon you to show that it means “governments” – especially given what follows in the separation of (individual) sheep from goats (not cultures or governments). You might want to look at passages which clearly refer to government (such as Romans 13) to see what Greek words were used.

What he said was recorded by others, just like if you testified in court a hundred years ago a court recorder would have written down what you said.

Without getting into the whole debate, this is simply not true. A court reporter is sworn to take down sworn testimony verbatim as it is given. In fact, there were NO concurrent testimony with any of claims of acts by Jesus, the accounts disagree and some modified to represent the objective of the presenter. some of the claims are clearly false, and there are translation issues. To try to give this the same credence as a transcript prepared by a court reporter is simply silly, NOR does any court transcription regarding witness testimony mean that the “story” given by testimony is true. In fact, many witnesses have been impeached.

Just being EOI here, there have been an awful lot of writings (some contemporary) of what Josephus DIDN’T say…he was first and foremost, a court historian…an accurate one as far as what he DID say, but he was known by his contemporaries for leaving out certain details…I doubt, given the generally low regard that the early followers of the teachings of the Christ were held, he would have admitted it…

But, you could also make the contention that he and the Christ “ran in different circles,” too.

“he was first and foremost, a court historian”

Sure, but the bottomline is that he didn’t KNOW Jesus existed…he simply reported what he was told. There’s no evidence that he verified the man’s existence. The most important thing he DID report was that the followers of Jesus “did not give up their affection for him” (close, if not an exact, quote) after he died. And THAT is more important than anything else.

In my opinion, there aren’t ENOUGH political leaders who want to take all guns away.

“Your equating Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and all the rest AND their ghostwriters to court reporters is pretty damn funny.”

I see. So you think, given evidence of instances of unreliability of human memory, that it is therefore NEVER reliable over time. Got any proof of that?

“Do you equate Constantine and the Council of Nicea to judge and jury then?”

I do not generally equate Catholicism (as an institution) with Christianity. You should not make that unthinking mistake either.

“But I think you are misinterpreting this passage.”

It’s always, “But I think you are misinterpreting this passage,” when you want to ignore something you don’t like. Of course when it comes to gays you act like they will cause the world to come to an end even though Jesus said nothing about them. Funny how you stated earlier that you don’t see how you could call yourself a Christian if you supported abortion and gays but left out divorce.

Republican Christian conservatives worship rich people, Towncrier, can you provide any quotes where Jesus had anything good to say about the rich? Anything at all? How about negatives?

Btw, would you mind listing your sins that society needs protecting from?

Ever since he was re-elected, cons here have been talking about “free stuff from Obama”.

And yet, I just can’t seem to get any of them to list what this “free stuff” consists of.

I wonder why that is?
