In cultures around the world, the arrival of a new year means more than the mere changing of the calendar. It is a time of cleansing and renewal, an opportunity to set past disappointments aside and to look ahead with optimism.
But let’s be honest: These are not the easiest of times in which to set aside fear in favor of optimism.
The financial meltdown of four or five years ago lingers like a hangover from a holiday party that went on much too long. The economy continues its slow recovery; Georgia’s unemployment rate last month was 8.5 percent, down a full percentage point from a year earlier and down almost two full percentage points from 2010. But it is sign of diminished expectations when a statewide jobless rate of 8.5 percent is considered evidence of progress.
And as too many of our fellow Americans know, those cold, impersonal numbers hide deep personal pain, loss and frustration. The American dream and its inherent promise that hard work will be rewarded no longer seem plausible for many, particularly the young. Only the foolish would try to deny that profound, unsettling changes are under way, and for one of the few times in our nation’s history, parents have cause to wonder whether their children and grandchildren will live in a world of reduced opportunity.
On the other hand, anger and disappointment can become self-fulfilling prophecies if indulged too long, and a backward-looking fixation on what used to be will blind you to what can be. That is as true for nations as it is for individuals. Previous generations of Americans faced times much more challenging than these and overcame them, and there is no reason to believe that we are not their legitimate and equally capable heirs.
At the moment, though, such context seems in short supply. In a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, just 40 percent of Americans describe themselves as hopeful about the course of world events in the coming year, while 56 percent described themselves as fearful. Unfortunately, a good part of that dismal showing can be explained as the aftermath of a deeply divisive, hard-fought election campaign that both political parties treated as a life-and-death struggle.
According to the Post poll, just 18 percent of Republicans report that they are hopeful about the course of world events in 2013, compared to 38 percent of independents and 61 percent of Democrats; 72 percent of Republicans describe themselves as fearful about what the next year will bring.
In the political world, such numbers have a way of compounding themselves. As Ronald Reagan knew better than anyone, and as the Democrats learned from Reagan the hard way, a party animated by the belief that this is a country in decline will find it difficult to rally others to its cause, creating a spiral that is hard to reverse.
It’s also important to remember that people of all political persuasions tend to exaggerate the importance of government and who runs it. Except in times of war, and at moments of economic crisis such as that of 2008-2009, government actually plays a relatively small role in the course of human events. At times we like to believe otherwise; we like to believe that acting through government, we exert direct control our own fate, but most of the that time, that simply isn’t true.
Faith in ourselves, each other and our country — or the lack of it — is far more important.

I *believe* that the bill will have to be resubmitted since an entirely new Congress is to be seated.
“From my understanding, the clock runs out at 11:59 pm on 1/2/2013.”
True, but leaders do sometimes ’suspend the clock’ at times such as this. If it seems that a breakthrough is possible, whoever’s in charge of the House at that time could order the clock to be suspended and debate could then proceed. That said, the swearing-in and seating of the new Congress is still going to happen on Thursday, so that tactic could only squeeze out a few hours’ more debate, if that.

This is from todays NYT’s.
“Whom should we blame for this? Again, we should not blame Obama and Boehner. In their different ways, they and a number of other people in the Congress are trying to find a politically palatable way to deal with these hard issues. They got what conditions allowed.
Ultimately, we should blame the American voters. The average Medicare couple pays $109,000 into the program and gets $343,000 in benefits out, according to the Urban Institute. This is $234,000 in free money. Many voters have decided they like spending a lot on themselves and pushing costs onto their children and grandchildren. They have decided they like borrowing up to $1 trillion a year for tax credits, disability payments, defense contracts and the rest. They have found that the original Keynesian rationale for these deficits provides a perfect cover for permanent deficit-living. They have made it clear that they will destroy any politician who tries to stop them from cost-shifting in this way.
Most members of Congress are responding efficiently to the popular will. A large number of reactionary Democrats reject any measure to touch Medicare or other entitlement programs. A large number of impotent Republicans talk about reducing the debt, but are incapable of forging a deal that balances tax increases with spending cuts.
The events of the past few weeks demonstrate that these political pressures overwhelm the few realists looking for a more ambitious bargain. The country either doesn’t know or doesn’t care about the burdens we are placing on our children. No coalition of leaders has successfully confronted the voters, and made them heedful of the ruin they are bringing upon the nation.
The American people are to blame for what we are doing to this country. The politicians such as Obama are just a symptom of our own greed and self-servance. We have become a nation of people who don’t care where the money comes from, as long as we get it. What is dispiccable is that Obama has created an entire career playing upon racial and economic division and by cowtowing to the unions and the entitlement loving public who don’t care what happens to this country just as long as they get theirs. Obama doesn’t care about this nations children. If he did, he would do something about our deficit and he would make the tough decison no matter what it does to him politically. He cried about the shootings in Conneticut but yet he is OK with saddling tomorrow childred with trillions of dollars of debt which they will never be able to get out from under. And he does this just to keep his party and his socialist agenda intact. Really sad.

The average Medicare couple pays $109,000 into the program and gets $343,000 in benefits out, according to the Urban Institute. This is $234,000 in free money
Rather misleading. I have paid for over 40 years. So now with inflation adjusted dollars and interest on my “investment” how much of the “free money” isn’t really free.

I’ve thought this way since they screwed up the original deadline. America needs a good, solid dose of the repercussions of continuously re-electing the same jackasses and expecting different results. This whole problem isn’t because of the failings of the DC bunch. This problem is because too many people vote party over substance. We should reap the entirety of what we’ve sown.

Profound conclusion; the politicians are not the problem, it is a problem of an uninformed electorate.
