With New Year, a chance to dump ‘negative waves’
In cultures around the world, the arrival of a new year means more than the mere changing of the calendar. It is a time of cleansing and renewal, an opportunity to set past disappointments aside and to look ahead with optimism.
But let’s be honest: These are not the easiest of times in which to set aside fear in favor of optimism.
The financial meltdown of four or five years ago lingers like a hangover from a holiday party that went on much too long. The economy continues its slow recovery; Georgia’s unemployment rate last month was 8.5 percent, down a full percentage point from a year earlier and down almost two full percentage points from 2010. But it is sign of diminished expectations when a statewide jobless rate of 8.5 percent is considered evidence of progress.
And as too many of our fellow Americans know, those cold, impersonal numbers hide deep personal pain, loss and frustration. The American dream and its inherent promise that hard work will be rewarded no longer seem plausible for many, particularly the young. Only the foolish would try to deny that profound, unsettling changes are under way, and for one of the few times in our nation’s history, parents have cause to wonder whether their children and grandchildren will live in a world of reduced opportunity.
On the other hand, anger and disappointment can become self-fulfilling prophecies if indulged too long, and a backward-looking fixation on what used to be will blind you to what can be. That is as true for nations as it is for individuals. Previous generations of Americans faced times much more challenging than these and overcame them, and there is no reason to believe that we are not their legitimate and equally capable heirs.
At the moment, though, such context seems in short supply. In a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, just 40 percent of Americans describe themselves as hopeful about the course of world events in the coming year, while 56 percent described themselves as fearful. Unfortunately, a good part of that dismal showing can be explained as the aftermath of a deeply divisive, hard-fought election campaign that both political parties treated as a life-and-death struggle.
According to the Post poll, just 18 percent of Republicans report that they are hopeful about the course of world events in 2013, compared to 38 percent of independents and 61 percent of Democrats; 72 percent of Republicans describe themselves as fearful about what the next year will bring.
In the political world, such numbers have a way of compounding themselves. As Ronald Reagan knew better than anyone, and as the Democrats learned from Reagan the hard way, a party animated by the belief that this is a country in decline will find it difficult to rally others to its cause, creating a spiral that is hard to reverse.
It’s also important to remember that people of all political persuasions tend to exaggerate the importance of government and who runs it. Except in times of war, and at moments of economic crisis such as that of 2008-2009, government actually plays a relatively small role in the course of human events. At times we like to believe otherwise; we like to believe that acting through government, we exert direct control our own fate, but most of the that time, that simply isn’t true.
Faith in ourselves, each other and our country — or the lack of it — is far more important.

I don”t believe in bullying, but when you have the most powerful armed forces in the world why do you worry about how much money you owe anybody? If we really want to pay off our debts then print more money, pay off the debts, and enforce the value of the money we print with our armed forces
Like you say, I don’t believe in bullying either, but when your economy is the biggest/baddest in the world, when people are stumbling over themselves to literally lend you money for less than nothing (which is what a long term T-bill comes to when you factor in any kind of inflation whatsoever), it is absurd to lie awake nights worrying about shrinking the deficit while so many continue to be un- or underemployed and could be put to work building, or re-building, stuff we need.
And the funny thing is, that implicit threat–which we wouldn’t have to even come close to making good on overtly–would STILL be a threat if we made gradual cuts to DoD to the point where our armed forces were half the size they are now.
Those cuts (very slowly, over time–I don’t want to throw contractors out of work while unemployment is still so high) and backing off payments to medical providers including big pharma–those are the only structural budget cuts that any sane person should consider. The rest is bullsh-t, and I wish…
well, mostly I wish Team Obama and Pelosi and Reid & Co. would say what I posted^^, what they surely know to be true, in public. and I wish Obama would say “stop the debt ceiling nonsense or I am minting that trillion dollar coin, and perhaps several more just like it, and y’all can go fondle a farm animal if you don’t approve. I’m tired of this crap. You can impeach me if you like, it won’t mean a thing, just like it didn’t the last time you pulled that stunt in ‘98.”
But that is an unrealistic wish. I’ll hope for sparkly ponies instead.

We need a first down to end the game. First down we completed a pass for for 8 yards so we had two downs to get two yards.
Normally, Les would be conservative and run twice. He threw twice and lost. The first pass was wide open but Mett overthrew as usual. The second pass was blocked by that monster that ate our lunch number 97 and the rest is history.

I saw some of the ASUS tablets at SAM’s yesterday. Not the one first suggested (I think that one is an older model that has been replaced) but two others. The guy selling them, who owns an iPad btw, said they are all equally as good, the Samsung, iPad, and the ASUS. I noticed though that the deal at SAM’s was that if you bought the ASUS you could send off for a free keyboard.

DDR: That was just the anuses from Ole Miss. I didn’t see any reports about MS State. I grew up in MS, the ENLIGHTENED part. Ole Miss is for the rich folks who were former slave owners, and State was for the working class and blacks.
I WILL tell you that I had a friend in Columbus MS. When I visited him I had to stand in the yard, his mom (a PhD English teacher) wouldn’t let white people in her house. That sword cuts two ways.

I was really impressed with Martinez (Nebraska QB) when he was a rookie, but not so much now. He doesn’t seem like he progressed much.

FRed: I WILL tell you that I had a friend in Columbus MS. When I visited him I had to stand in the yard, his mom (a PhD English teacher) wouldn’t let white people in her house. That sword cuts two ways.
Dang! I could beat that — My Grand wouldn’t come to my wedding because I was marrying Dudley. For my wedding present he bough me a Glock. He said because, “White people go crazy and try to kill up everyone in the house — I’m just giving you a fighting chance girl!”.
He told Dudley he’d kill him if one hair on my head was hurt — Dudley is like 5′10/11 (Shorter than me at 6′1″) and my Grand was like 5′7″.
When he’d call my house, he’d ask me about that “White boy I married” and if “You still married to that white boy?”
The last few years of his life was when he’d finally warmed up to Dudley — I think we’d been married about 6 years by then. And the only reason he started warming up to him was because Dudley treated me good, was polite to him AND had good credit!
The funny part of all of this ^^^? Although my grandmother was black, my Grand’s second wife was WHITE! He said it was allright for HIM to step over the color line, but for me, his ANGEL, his favorite grandbaby — it was unthinkable!
Moral of the story? You’re right, prejudice comes in all stripes!
Fred: BTW Dudley doesn’t know how lucky he is to HAVE a wife that watches football. My wife knows absolutely nothing about the game. After 20 years I have managed to teach her nothing either, It just doesn’t stick………
It’s probably like my Mom and trying to teach me how to cook. I pretend not to know anything, so that i can escape out the kitchen!! Besides, my mom is a Capo when it comes to the kitchen. She barks orders out like an Army General and threatens you like the Mafiaoso!
