Wow dB, I had never even heard of Television before.

My “favorite” traveling song is the one below. When I was at Valparaiso college radio station did a show every week where they would read out students looking for a ride home (and where too) and student driving home willing to share a ride for gas. I had never even heard of Television before.

When I started seeking out interesting original music in NYC’s club scene as a young lad, Television and this other weird, artsy-fartsy band (which I enjoyed tremendously, mind you) had been closely linked–they used to play a lot of double bills. I saw them both and figured Television had the chops, the balls (they absolutely exuded confidence onstage), and the buzz. I figured that Other Band would be at best a footnote to rock history.

But, per usual, I was wrong about the marketability aspect, and the Other Band went on to relative fame while Television… well, their debut winds up on a lot of rock critics’ Top Albums of All Time, but that and two fifty gets you a ride on the subway, really.

Buchanan was a great guitarist – very influential and hardly known. PBS did a special on him, calling him the greatest unknown guitarist. I never knew about him as a kid. But there is no denying his greatness. The reason he was never well known I think is because he didn’t really care to polish and package his music to make it more palatable to the masses.

Then there this: Once, during Bellini’s Norma, the whole house was under the priestess’ spell and there emerged a palpable and viscerally-shared sustained moment of wet and dry, joy and sorrow, beauty and……BRAVA DIVA!!!!…….some pure idiot behind me yelled and startled the singer, who reacted for a beat and broke character…..and popped the bubble. The soprano was only near the end of the aria, not at the end of it. Where were the ushers? Then the soprano starts casting about her gaze for who the idiot was, and she settled on me as near enough. The daggers and asps I got from her in half-character were suffocating. If she woulda stayed in character I probably wouldn’t have made it out of there. No Joke. Don’t mess with a Druid Priestess.

I can’t speak for New Orleans but in Eufaula, AL. where I’ve spent a good deal of time the local legend is that one of the antebellum homes that Eufaula is known for was used to hold Southern women that were forced to serve Union troops. Not sure how much truth it had but to the locals it sure seemed to have creedence.

Rape has always been part of war. I had a friend years back of German ancestry who ranted one night about his hatred of the Russians. His mother had been gang raped by Russian soldiers and the mass rapes committed by the Russians is well documented.

I thought you might like that one. I agree with your take on it. There were several “sub” thingies that caught me. The first, which really wasn’t a sub theme at all, but which was treated as one and thus realistically, to me, was the Western European (American) assimilationist versus the traditional when dealing with the tribal cultural milieu. The second was the language thingie (of course) there was such a melange of languages, French and Romany, of course, but I heard Serbo Croat, Hungarian and Romanian, too…

As for a similar film, I liked this one. It has to be ordered.

My bro in law has a neighbor who hates guns. She once scolded him for having a rifle to hunt deer with. A few months ago her house was robbed and she escaped and ran to his house because she knew he had a rifle. She knocked on his door and when he answered she told him to grab his gun to help get the burglars out of her house because she left her cell inside and could not call 911. He smiled and said he could not help her because he didnt want to get scolded by her for his gun. Lesson: don’t piss off law abiding gun owners because you might need one to help you out.

Once when I was shopping at the Whole Foods, the Progressive Flo girl was using a price gun to price the deer. Then those Chik-Fil-A cows broke in to rob the store. I ran next door to get help, and wow, they just smiled and let my store get ransacked because, you know, that’s what real Richards do in pretend Whole Foods shopping. Ya know its funny but lately every time they pull that whole foods card I always come back and blow it out of the water by telling them that its a lie and that the whole foods lady was really at all these other places in that channel 11 report – strip clubs, liquor stores, etc.

You would think that they would learn after I laid waste to that crap a few times. But just like trained seals they come back and use the whole foods card again and then I blast them all over. Then they scurry like cockaroaches with the light turned on.

When I was right out of college. I took a job at DFCS in Atlanta at the Central City North office downtown. It was a Food Stamp distribution center for the homeless. We use to watch them get their $110 a month for Food Stamps and walk around the corner and trade them for $50 cash and then go to the next block liquor store and buy a bottle. When the state went to the EBT (Electronic benefit transfer) system the men around the corner disappeared and the liquor store closed down within two months.

I know you like to deflect to sports when “the church” is brought up in regards to child molestation issues and surely there is validity to your point, however what has and could still be taking place within the upper reaches of the Catholic Church is deplorable.

As vile as what took place at Penn State, it doesn’t even come close to moving priests to other parishes to prey on other kids, pay offs, etc.

Not denying what goes on in certain areas of sports, but you deflect from the church so quick, one would think you won a gold medal in the 100 meters.

You make the assumption that both the GOP and Dems have no “moderates.” Now, of that c 60% somewhere in between the “liberal” and “conservative” extremes, the majority of them do tend strongly to vote for the Democrats.

As I said earlier, there are historical reasons for this. The first is that the Dems from the earliest days in the South welcomed the Jews into the party and elected them on a regular basis up through the early national period. The GOP, and outgrowth of the Know Nothings, was marked by a strong element of anti Semitism, which reached the point of persecution during the Civil War. The established American Jewish community saw the Democrats as their protectors, if you will, and when it came time to assimilate the massive influx of Eastern Europeans, the “unwashed masses” were given a bath by their established co religionists and brought into the D party. Heavily influenced as they were by the Bundist political expressions of their homelands, they were relatively comfortable there. Secondly, the GOP did not do a whole lot during the Reconstruction period to undo the damage done earlier finding few Jewish converts among the established.

Loyal to who was loyal to them, the Jews have been “at home” with the Democrats.

Well, in truth, I have been guilty of that as well as many of the posters here (on both the left and right – I will not name names as I am sure you realize I speak the truth). I think there can be no disputing the claim that it is liberals that want to increase gun control – some a little, some a lot. But it is, in my opinion, a really stupid knee-jerk reaction that has little to do with reality. There are plenty of studies that show that gun control, as instituted in the various ways it has been in different countries, has little provable or correlative effect on gun violence. I do not like what happened in Newtown any more than the next person – I hate it. And I would like to see if we can figure out what we can do to reduce such senseless violence. But I think gun control per se is a mindless application of a band-aid to someone dying of a heart attack. And is suspect people clamoring for gun control (and not anything else) are really only trying top push a political and ideological agenda.

One thing I think might help with gun some rampage killings is to make parents responsible if they, by not securing their guns, are guilty of a kind of reckless endangerment to the general public. But that would only help some. Another thing would to make people pay through the nose for selling guns to felons or those not legally permitted to own them (I’m talking life sentences). Another thing would be an all-out war on gangs in America.

I don’t hunt or own a gun. Does anyone know if there is a good reason or justification to hunt with a semi-automatic rifle? It is the muzzle velocity of rifles that make them very scary if they are semi-automatics – they do much, much more damage to a human body than do pistols.

This is were you are being fooled by the gun control people. The 2nd Amendment was is no way written for the purpose of hunters. It was written so that the government would not even consider to be tyrannical. Please go and look at the quotes of our founding fathers about the 2nd Amendment. It is plain that they were very scared of a centralized government taking our freedoms and liberties away and having a well armed citizenry was a balance against the government.

And again, td, let’s think through your argument. You are supposing that a President – say one with a funny middle name – directs the military to forcibly move to take over the government, and then visits private homes to forcibly remove your weapons from you.

First, as someone else pointed out, the military would likely refuse to do that, and secondly, in the unlikely event that they did follow orders, your Bushmaster would be worthless against the forces of the United States military.

As Indigo pointed out, our society today is a little different than that of the founding fathers.

So I guess that means our Founding Fathers fantasized more then most because it was them that wrote the 2nd Amendment for just the day that the government might want to place unjust laws on the citizens and enforce them with a standing military.
