Some travelin’ music to get us all home safely
We just spent a magical New England Christmas with my sister Lee Ann and her family, along with a gathering of the extended Bookman/Halunen clan. It was a perfect week, complete with a snowy Christmas Day, but life and home beckon. We’re now headed back to the ATL to kick off the new year.
My brother-in-law and host, Reino, is among other things an avid amateur guitar player. In fact, one of the highlights of the holiday came when Reino presented a miniature electric guitar, complete with miniature amp, to his 5-year-old grandson, Nathan, with promises of guitar lessons to come.
Reino’s favorite blues guitar player is the late Gary Moore of Northern Ireland, best known in this country for his stint with Thin Lizzy. So in tribute to Reino and Lee Ann, and in thanks for their great hospitality, here’s Mr. Moore, performing one of his solo hits:

Great story…
A friend of mine was a big wig in the local Symphony and was miffed that they were playing Mahler’s First which he considered an atrocity. He warned them that they didn’t “want to go through with this.” They did. Just as the conductor lifted the baton came the cry from the loges…”vive la musique tacky!” The audience giggled throughout the performance and the orchestra received quite the ovation and rounds of bravi!

How uninformed are you? You do not have a clue about what you are talking about and have not got a clue about time context. During the time we were discussing, slaves were property and you could not rape property. It was also common practice and very legal for men in their 20’s or 30’s to marry women as young as 12 or 13. Holy shyte! That was an incredible film. Thanks a ton. I’m a new member of the Rona Hartner fan club. She’s my new princess of Romany.
Seriously though that film had it all. It told a great story, accurately portrayed how things are, and from an art critcs standpoint it had a lot of great themes in it. Everything from the persecution of the Roma to the sexual tension between Stephan and Rona’s character, Adriani and kangaroo courts, a lot of humor and laughter mixed in with sadness and tragedy. I knew it was gonna be funny when Stephan said eff Le pen near the beginning. Lemme know if you run across any more good European or foreign films like that.
I think we as Americans have watched so many crappy films here highlighted by special effects, scenery, etc. that we lose track of the themes and the plot that tell a great story and make a great movie. I’ve noticed every time in the last few years that I’ve watched a European or Argentinian film that I’ve always been impressed with the plots and subplots. Can’t say that about our domestic film industry.

I can’t speak for New Orleans but in Eufaula, AL. where I’ve spent a good deal of time the local legend is that one of the antebellum homes that Eufaula is known for was used to hold Southern women that were forced to serve Union troops. Not sure how much truth it had but to the locals it sure seemed to have creedence.
Rape has always been part of war. I had a friend years back of German ancestry who ranted one night about his hatred of the Russians. His mother had been gang raped by Russian soldiers and the mass rapes committed by the Russians is well documented.

I thought you might like that one. I agree with your take on it. There were several “sub” thingies that caught me. The first, which really wasn’t a sub theme at all, but which was treated as one and thus realistically, to me, was the Western European (American) assimilationist versus the traditional when dealing with the tribal cultural milieu. The second was the language thingie (of course) there was such a melange of languages, French and Romany, of course, but I heard Serbo Croat, Hungarian and Romanian, too…
