Will our anger be buried alongside Newtown’s dead?

Connecticut_School_Sh_inev_t607

A flag flies at half mast on a dark, wintry night in Newtown, Conn. This week, the townspeople will bury their dead, including the bodies of 20 young first-graders murdered by an assailant who broke into their school. Coffin manufacturers have donated the 20 small caskets that will be needed in the burials. (AP)

The Bushmaster .223, the weapon used by Adam Lanza to kill 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Each victim had been shot three to 11 times, according to the coroner's report. Lanza is reported to have brought multiple 30-round magazines to the school, and at the time of his death at his own hand still possessed hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Robbie Parker, the father of six-year-old Emilie, has had to explain her death to her two siblings, ages 3 and 4. "They seem to get the fact that they have somebody they're going to miss very much," he said.

An excerpt from President Barack Obama’s message to Newtown and the nation, delivered at a prayer vigil Sunday night (entire text available here):

“Someone once described the joy and anxiety of parenthood as the equivalent of having your heart outside of your body all the time, walking around. With their very first cry, this most precious, vital part of ourselves — our child — is suddenly exposed to the world, to possible mishap or malice. And every parent knows there is nothing we will not do to shield our children from harm.

And yet, we also know that with that child’s very first step, and each step after that, they are separating from us; that we won’t — that we can’t always be there for them. They’ll suffer sickness and setbacks and broken hearts and disappointments. And we learn that our most important job is to give them what they need to become self-reliant and capable and resilient, ready to face the world without fear.

And we know we can’t do this by ourselves. It comes as a shock at a certain point where you realize, no matter how much you love these kids, you can’t do it by yourself. That this job of keeping our children safe, and teaching them well, is something we can only do together, with the help of friends and neighbors, the help of a community, and the help of a nation. And in that way, we come to realize that we bear a responsibility for every child because we’re counting on everybody else to help look after ours; that we’re all parents; that they’re all our children.

This is our first task — caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how, as a society, we will be judged.

And by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we are meeting our obligations? Can we honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep our children — all of them — safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we’re all together there, letting them know that they are loved, and teaching them to love in return? Can we say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?”

I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is no.”

The answer is no.

That one person had mental problems and took them out on the innocent is no reflection on the millions and millions of us that DID NOT.

Well, I’m sick of people calling the shooter “mentally disabled” or saying he had “mental problems.” That’s a load of hooey.

He knew that shooting all those kids was wrong. When the police showed up, he knew what was going to happen to him after a trial. He had enough mind to shoot himself to keep that from happening. If he was really crazy, he would of shot it out with the cops.

Some people just have a hard time accepting there’s people meaner than a snake. Even his mom knew he was. That’s why she warned a babysitter for him never to turn his back on the kid, not even to go to the bathroom. You can read about it here:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57559502/ex-babysitter-says-newtown-conn-school-shooter-adam-lanzas-mother-warned-dont-turn-your-back/

He was this way all his life. You can call it “mentally disabled” if you want, but he was plenty calculating. There ain’t a court in this country that would say he’s insane.

Have a good night everybody.

I don’t care much for Michael Moore, but in the movie ‘Bowling for Columbine’, he interviewed Marilyn Manson – I don’t really know why. But one of his questions was “If you somehow could have talked to those kids before the shooting, what would you say to them?”

Manson answered “I wouldn’t have said anything at all. I would have LISTENED to them.”

I think that response is worth thinking about.

Agreed.

But the real reason I’m replying is to answer the “why” you implicitly raise, about MM interviewing MM.

He interviewed Marilyn Manson because that band was targeted as some kind of dark influence over Dylan Klebold. The point Moore was making in the title of his movie, was that the Columbine shooters also took a bowling elective in high school, but nobody seemed to want to blame bowling for their mental instability–so why blame Marilyn Manson?

A crude point, but not an unjustified one.

You cannot institutionalize everyone, for sure. However, at some point if a Psychiatrist or someone knows somebody may go off, then AT LEAST have a group meeting, warn law enforcement (see Colorodo shooter) or something. We have become so aware of mental health now, that the politically correct thing to do is to turn the loons loose on the street along with the truly mentally challenged folks that have made progress. There ARE warning signs…….like when one of them says “I’m gonna kill a bunch of folks!!!” C’mon, man! In 2010 there was a settlement between the State of Georgia and the U.S. Department of Justice to address the “perceived” failures of state hospitals to adequately serve individuals with mental illness. this basically ended up taking people from institutions (and later keeping many from ever getting sent there) to more community-based or home-based care. Admitedly, there was a need for reform….even Downs syndrome kids back in the day were automatically institutionilized. However, you reckon’ they overdid things?

Has anyone considered these shoot’em up video games that are desensitizing these youngsters to this kind of violence?

Countless people have.

And I will second what Rude Pundit said and add to it.

I think our nation’s acceptance of the death penalty, ridiculously overlong prison sentences for routine crimes, assassination-by-Presidential-decree, willingness to use torture because we think it works, and oh yeah, pre-emptive invasions and occupations that have resulted in countless thousands of civilian deaths, might just have desensitized us a bit more than shooter video games.

(and I mostly can’t stand such things, won’t let me kid play ‘em, and have almost no stomach whatsoever for violent movies, so if anything I should be ready, willing and able to blame them. But I don’t–tend to I see them as merely symptomatic of far nastier institutionalized evils at work.)

And it is John WAYNE, not Wynn.
@ Erwin’s cat…personally I think you are closer to most of these mass shootings than other’s realize. Those games, TV, movies, and a general movement of progressives to tell everyone it is not their fault and they are not responsible, have desensitized a couple of generations now. Life imitates art…happens all the time. If media says an action or an irresponsibility is correct, it must be, right?

S&W, HK, Sig and the others may have created the weapons, but the progrssive attack on values for the last 40 years has created the shooters.

It’s not the guns that kill…it’s the mentally insane, thugs, gangs, etc. I don’t remember anyone that killed in one of these haneous crimes having a consealed carry permit. Most police encourage law abiding citizens to get a permit because if you have to call 911 it’s too late! We as a Nation kill thousands of innocent children every year through abortions, drunk driving, child abuse, neglect, etc. but where is the compassion and support for these innocent victims??? We removed God and Prayer from our schools but when a tradegy such as this occurs we see the President quoting from the Bible. Well, maybe if he quoted the Bible more often and restored God and Prayer in our schools this type of tradegy wouldn’t happen. Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon of gun laws but when insane people want to kill, they will find a way. Timothy McVeigh used fertilizer! Muslims used planes! This nutjob could have just as easily used propane, gas or some other explosive to killed just as many if not more. He could have used a vehicle to run them down on a playground! The problem is we as a society always want to blame something other than the root cause. There’s no accountability for crime anymore! The news media runs the name of this guy all vover the news for days on end and gives them the attention they wanted to start with. That’s what they want to go down in history with their name being a household name! Now, thanks to them we run the risk of more copycat killers! Look to the rap songs, video games, movies, etc. that portray this type of behavior as well!

That’s why my opinion is that there is little to nothing we can do to stop these incidents from happening. Ideology and entrenched opinions make that virtually impossible. What we should be focusing on is how to keep from making ourselves a target.

I don’t go places without knowing where the exits are, even the emergency exits. Unless I’m with people that I am very comfortable with, I don’t sit with my back to doors or windows. Instead of spending all kinds of money on ways to turn schools into maximum security prisons, why not focus on ways to help kids excape as quickly as possible? We make airlines install inflatable slides on the doors of planes to expedite evacuation, why can’t we use that same principle on classroom windows and such?

I think the mental problem is something that should be addressed. While addressing that, we also need to address our addiction to medicating people for any and everything under the sun too. How many of these mental issues have we brought on as a side effect to medication of some kind?

is the coming revolution of 3-d printing. People will be absolutely able to use open source software to build a firearm from the comfort of their home or office if they have a printer. Initial projects have already met with varying degrees of success and have already fired live rounds. Soon, it will be perfected. Gun control is a lost cause.

While I think the seriousness of this issue certainly dictates the debate about gun ownership must be on the table, that’s as wise as placing a banquet in front of a starving obese man and then discussing the 300 calorie diet he is going to be placed on.

There is a thirst for violence in america – first person shooter games, virtually unlimited gun violence on our prime time television and movies, the glorification of the perpetrators in our national news media who broadcast everything about the guilty party, while leaving the stories and identities of the victims in the dust.

If you are going to “fix” this, you have to assign the discussion directly at that thirst for violence. That’s cultural, and until you do you can ban everything gun, bullet, and it won’t make a difference.

Guess who the number one responsible parties are to gun shootings and deaths? Drug crime related killings…

Last I check.. drugs are illegal in this country… how can this be possible?

And for those who think this administration is against assault weapons? Doubtful, as we’ve been selling our guns and assault weapons to mexican drug cartel since 2009. So the government sells bad things to bad men…

and we have folks believe they serious want to fix this issue here?

Jay…

Considering your support of abortion: the intentional murder of an unborn child within their mother’s womb. I find this essay more than just a tab bit ironic and hypocritical.
