Signs of change on assault weapon ban

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia, generally shies from anything that smacks of liberalism. Last fall, for example, he declined to say publicly that he would vote for Barack Obama. He also campaigned in 2010 by broadcasting a commercial in which he literally shot up an environmental bill, and has earned an A rating from the National Rifle Association for his past opposition to gun-control efforts.

So this means something:

For those unable to view videos, Manchin embraces the idea of renewing a ban on the sale of assault weapons and banning large-capacity magazines, among other steps.

“We’ve never been in these waters before. We’ve had horrific crimes throughout our country but never have we seen so many our our babies out in harms way and their life taken from them, and the grief. I mean, that’s changed me, and has changed most Americans I would think. And with that, let’s look at ways that we can bring a common-sense reasonability to this discussion and bring all the adults to the table.”

Among those whom Manchin wants to invite to the discussion are leaders of the National Rifle Association. “These are good people and they need to be at the table,” Manchin says.

NRA involvement could indeed by useful in forging a compromise. But nothing in its modern history or rhetoric suggests that it was any interest in playing such a role.

godless: FYI, firearms are highly regulated. Go buy one, if you even qualify.

FYI to YOU — I’m a gun owner. The difference between me and you is that I’m not a loon who feels threatened and needs my gun with me at all times, even when I go to church, or the bathroom, or to the pool, or to the gym, or outside to ride my bike, in order to feel safe.

Anyone here argued against ANY gun control legislation? ANYONE?? Many have argued against additional stupid laws that will do nothing to prevent another incident such as occurred Friday

That’s the same as arguing against ANY gun control in my opinion. If you see a need for a law, (like let’s say Drunk Driving), yet you refuse to take the step to enact the law, then YES you are arguing against ANY law that may abate a problem. IMO.

“How many “shots” did John Hinckley, Jr. “get off”?”

The important thing is that he wasn’t allowed to reload and wander around a school, church or mall shooting people at will. Because there were agents there ………. he was taken down immediately.

You will NEVER be able to stop someone from going to a school, church or mall to shoot people. Evil will always be with us. What you MUST be prepared to do is to STOP or MINIMIZE it before the police arrive.

The recent mall shooting in Oregon is a good example you (and the mainstream media) choose to ignore.

Nancy Lanza had assault weapons because she was worried about the direction the country was going, the economy, and her fight for survival if something should happen. Nancy Lanza’s sister-in-law’s description of Nancy Lanza as reported on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, during the 10 p.m. CBS News Special.

According to the New York Times, “Investigators have linked Ms. Lanza to five weapons: two powerful handguns, two traditional hunting rifles and a semiautomatic rifle that is similar to weapons used by troops in Afghanistan. Her son took the two handguns and the semiautomatic rifle to the school.”

And the mall shooter in Oregon committed suicide because a citizen pointed a gun at him !

P.S. The agents didn’t fire a shot because they were trained at that close range (”arm’s reach”) it’s faster to grab the guy than draw and shoot at him. Had he been across the street …………. it would have been different.

Ummmm dumbass, don’t you realize that you can’t buy bulk purchases of fertilizer anymore without your information being tracked?

Geez, the level of stupidity has drastically increased since the election. Hell, I think I found the reason why the righties are so damned angry today….

http://www.gopusa.com/news/2012/12/17/electoral-college-casts-votes-today/

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Tradition trumped suspense Monday as members of the Electoral College cast the official, final votes in an exhausting 2012 presidential election, a constitutional formality on President Barack Obama’s march to a second term.

The rite playing in state capitols involved party luminaries and tireless activists carrying out the will of each state’s voters. The popular vote from state-to-state dictates whether Democratic or Republican electors get the honor, but the outcome is not in doubt.

Now, compare the GOPerized version that I’ve linked there vs the “librul media” version via Yahoo…

If things look as they do, it seems as Mr. Brian Bakst over at GOPUSA is committing plagiarism of the highest order. The two differences is that Mr. Bakst didn’t include the “sour grapes” section that Yahoo has, and then Mr. Bakst’s name isn’t credited by Yahoo as contributing to this piece.

Everybody should look at both of those links and see exactly what living in an echo chamber reads like. I think I’m saving both of these to post every time somebody whines about the “librul media”.

“I hope you don’t have a big sign out front announcing this.”

Of course not, my point is people advocating “SWAT Teams” and ex-military guarding these places probably won’t work in the way some believe.

Sorry, SWAT and Military people are not trained for this type of work. Can they do it? Sure after training (and psychological evaluation).

I guess some people forget what a soldier is trained to do.

More importantly, where do the funds come for training and salaries?

There are more questions. I don’t have the time. This is an anonymous blog so people can posit whatever they want.

My Dad served in three wars. He killed many people for the USA. He was a Marksman and strangely never allowed a firearm in the house. My brothers and I were never allowed to have any type of firearm (not even a BB gun). My brother got whipped when my father found he sneaked in a BB gun.
My father had specific views about firearms. He was a soldier and believed there only purpose was to kill (people).

I don’t have an issue with people that hunt. I respect that. You don’t hunt with a semi-automatic rifle.

Anyway, there are too many people that have all the answers. My guess is this terrible tragedy will be forgotten in a week or two.

Sad but true. One last thing, I have a hard time imagining god with an AK47, multiple bandoliers, grenades, and a few hand guns (with extra ammo just in case).

The 50-year-old is thought to have worked as a supply teacher at the elementary school where the shootings took place.Last night it also emerged Nancy was a member of the Doomsday Preppers movement, which believes people should prepare for end of the world.

Her former sister-in-law Marsha said she had turned her home ‘into a fortress’. She added: ‘Nancy had a survivalist philosophy which is why she was stockpiling guns. She had them for defense. ‘She was stockpiling food. She grew up on a farm in New Hampshire.

She was skilled with guns. We talked about preppers and preparing for the economy collapsing.’Marsha added that her nephew had been raised by ‘kind, nurturing’ parents’. She said she last seen Adam in June but recalled nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

‘Nancy was a good mother, kind-hearted,’ she added. ‘She wasn’t one to deny reality. She would have sought psychiatric help for her son had she felt he needed it.’

Debbie reminds me of the VERY liberal journalist Carl Rowan who was a rabid anti-gun person ………….. until he shot someone in his backyard.

“In a 1981 column, he advocated “a law that says anyone found in possession of a handgun except a legitimate officer of the law goes to jail—period.”

“Rowan gained public notoriety on June 14, 1988, when he shot an unarmed teenage trespasser, Neil Smith, who was on his property illegally. “The interloper was a near-naked teenager who had been skinny-dipping with friends in Rowan’s pool, and the columnist’s weapon was an unregistered, and thus very illegal, .22 caliber pistol.”

NEWTOWN, Conn. – At the bar, everybody knew her name.

Nancy Lanza was the one who, if she heard you were short on cash, regularly offered to pick up the tab at My Place.

Two or three nights a week, Lanza — the mother of the gunman in Connecticut’s horrific school massacre — came in for carryout salads, but stayed for Chardonnay and good humor. The divorced mother of two — still smooth-skinned and ash blonde at 52 — clearly didn’t have to work, but was always glad to share talk of her beloved Red Sox, gardening and a growing enthusiasm for target shooting.

But while Lanza spoke proudly about her sons and brought them in for breakfast when they were younger, friends say she held one card very close: home life, especially its trials and setbacks, was off limits.

Now, the secrets Lanza kept are at the center of the questions that envelop this New England town, grieving over the slaughter unleashed by her 20-year-old son Adam, who investigators say killed his mother Friday with one of her own guns before murdering 26 children and teachers at a nearby school.

“Her family life was her family life. She kept it private, when we were together. That was her own thing,” said Louise Tambascio, who runs the warmly lit pizzeria and bar with her own sons, and became a shopping and dining companion of Nancy Lanza’s.

Friends had met Lanza’s younger son, who stared down at the floor and didn’t speak when she brought him in. They knew he’d switched schools more than once and that she’d tried home schooling him. But while she occasionally expressed concern about his future during evenings at the bar, she never complained about anything at all.

“I heard her as a parent. I always said that I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes. But I thought, `Wow. She holds it well,”‘ said Tambascio’s son, John.

California resident Ryan Kraft told KCAL-TV in Los Angeles that when he was a teenager he lived a few doors down from the Lanza family and used to babysit Adam Lanza, then nine or 10 years old. He said the boy “struck me as an introverted kid.”

“His mom Nancy had always instructed me to keep an eye on him at all times, never turn my back or even go to the bathroom or anything like that. Which I found odd but I really didn’t ask; it wasn’t any of my business,” said Kraft, who lives in Hermosa Beach. “But looking back at it now, I guess there was something else going on.”

Despite the challenges, the trappings of Lanza’s life in Newtown were comfortable. When she and then-husband Peter Lanza moved to the central Connecticut community in 1998 from southern New Hampshire, they bought a brand new 3,100-square-foot colonial set on more than two acres in the Bennett’s Farm neighborhood. Nancy Lanza had previously worked as a stock broker at John Hancock in Boston and her husband was a successful executive.

When the couple divorced in 2009, he left their spacious home to Nancy Lanza and told her she would never have to work another day in her life, said Marsha Lanza of Crystal Lake, Ill., Lanza’s aunt. The split-up was not acrimonious and Adam spent time with both his mother and father, she said.

Those who knew Nancy Lanza recall her as very generous, often giving money to those she met and doing volunteer work.

When a mutual friend sought a loan from an acquaintance, Jim Leff, and Leff asked for collateral, Lanza intervened.

“Nancy overheard the discussion, and, unblinkingly, told him she’d just write him a check then and there,” Leff recalled on his blog in a post after Lanza’s death. “While I’m far from the most generous guy in the world, it’s not often that I feel stingy. But I learned something from that. I should have just written him the check. She was right.”

Mark Tambascio recalled the time Lanza invited him and his brother to attend a Boston Red Sox game, buying them tickets atop the outfield wall known as the Green Monster, and refusing any talk of repayment.

There were moments when she appeared carefree. Inside My Place on Sunday, friends passed around a book of photos from a 2008 sailing trip off Newport, R.I., including one showing Lanza, her eyes gently closed and head tilted back as the sea breeze blew through her hair. “Dreamer!” read the caption.

Neighbors knew her from the monthly gathering of women who rotated between homes for games of the dice game bunko. Lanza enthused about gardening, while poking fun of the fact that few could see the result because her house was set back from the road on a low rise, partly cloaked by trees.

“She used to give me a hard time, you know, because I put out all these Christmas lights, and she said, `I put out mine, too, but you can’t even see them,”‘ said Rhonda Cullens, who lives one street over.

Lanza also began telling friends that she’d bought guns and had taken up target shooting, John Tambascio said.

All three of the guns that Adam Lanza carried into Sandy Hook Elementary were owned and registered by his mother — a pair of handguns and a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, his primary weapon.

Investigators said Sunday that Nancy Lanza visited shooting ranges several times and that her son also visited an area range.

Ginger Colbrun, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, said it’s still not clear whether Nancy Lanza brought her son to the range or whether he ever fired a weapon there.

Marsha Lanza told the Chicago Sun-Times that Nancy Lanza wanted guns for protection. “She prepared for the worst,” Marsha Lanza told the newspaper. “I didn’t know that they (the guns) would be used on her.”

Guns were her hobby,” Dan Holmes, who got to know Lanza while doing landscaping work for her, told The Washington Post. “She told me she liked the single-mindedness of shooting.”

But while trips to shooting ranges gave Lanza an outlet, she returned home to the ever-present challenges of raising a son with intractable problems.

At Newtown High School, Adam Lanza was often having crises that only his mother could defuse.

“He would have an episode, and she’d have to return or come to the high school and deal with it,” said Richard Novia, the school district’s head of security until 2008, who got to know the family because both Lanza sons joined the school technology club he chartered.

Novia said Adam Lanza would sometimes withdraw completely “from whatever he was supposed to be doing,” whether it was sitting in class or reading a book.

Adam Lanza “could take flight, which I think was the big issue, and it wasn’t a rebellious or defiant thing,” Novia said. “It was withdrawal.”

The club gave the boy a place where he could be more at ease and indulge his interest in computers. His anxieties appeared to ease somewhat, but they never disappeared. When people approached him in the hallways, he would press himself against the wall or walk in a different direction, clutching tight to his black briefcase.

Marsha Lanza described Nancy Lanza as a good mother.

“If he had needed consulting, she would have gotten it,” Marsha Lanza said. “Nancy wasn’t one to deny reality.”

But friends and neighbors said Lanza never spoke about the difficulties of raising her son. Mostly she noted how smart he was and that she hoped, even with his problems, that he’d find a way to succeed.

“We never talked about the family,” John Tambascio said. “She just came in to have a great time.”

I’ve lost the use of my heart.
But I’m still alive
Still looking for the life
The endless pool on the other side, It’s a wild wild west
I’m doing my best

I’m at the borderline of my faith,
I’m at the hinterland of my devotion
In the frontline of this battle of mine
But I’m still alive

0311/8541,

Thank you but I’ll bet you’ve seen these worthless enter a code access systems and see someone avoid entering their own code by catching the door before it closes and following someone into a building. Or seeing the buzz in methodology where someone is being looked up in the computer database while several people are waiting in line talking and not paying attention to a person who quickly but unobserved follows another through the door who was buzzed into the building. We need to tighten security and most school systems don’t have the necessary security in place. We need to start there first.

Dog: Roy Rogers could shoot 2!

I thought of that right after I hit Submit.

When I was at the courthouse getting my first CC permit, there was a guy there getting his. The clerk asked him for his index finger for printing. He asked which one she wanted, right or left. She said the one you pull the trigger with. He said, “I use ‘em both.”

Maybe it was Roy.

That gentleman’s story to my knowledge has not been corroborated by the police, camera surveillance and I can’t say for sure but I couldn’t find any eyewitness accounts.

It’s funny how you read that leftists/liberals always want to take advantage of a crisis, yet the conservatives are running with this story like Eric Metcalf Sr returning a kickoff.

So prosecute her. Oh wait, you can’t because she was murdered, apparently in her sleep. And that seems to make you happy.

I’m arguing that there are a hundred stories on the Internet about her being a survivorist and that is supported by very sketch hearsay evidence. Yet you and your kind lap it up. Only thing more pleasing to you will be if it is revealed that she was member of the NRA. Then your glee in her death would totally vindicated. Sick.

Thanks for linking it. It helps me not think about this tragedy.

And I’ve tried really hard not to learn anything much about this massacre but even so, I just feel so damn awful.

Last night I watched a lovely Holiday special on GPB with Jane Seymour and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I was enthralled by the magic of the performances and then that “thing” would creep into my mind and I fell despondent and wept. As if I had no right to be so happy when so many were in such agony…

some on this board have been debating what an abortion is. here is the definition.

Abortion is the termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to viability. An abortion can occur spontaneously, in which case it is usually called a miscarriage, or it can be purposely induced. The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy.

Miscarriage is when the body naturally ends the pregnancy. This is not murder by God as some have very weakly tried to argue.

Abortion(murder) is when the pregnancy is ended by choice. this is the known ending of a human life. If some can’t understand that life begins at conception, I can’t help you on that basic biological fact.

If it doesn’t begin at conception you have to make a judgment call as to when life does begin. One week? One month? Six months? Some have argued the baby must be viable….able to live on it’s own if delivered at some point during the pregnancy. I would contend no baby is able to live on its own as they are incapable of doing anything for themselves.

Now I ask the following: a baby is at term and moving through the birth canal. as long as the baby is in the womb the child is not considered a person and can be murdered in any number of ways…all legal according to the laws of this once great land. once that baby clears the birth canal they are now magically a person with rights. my question: do you really believe there is any difference in that little, helpless, precious life in those circumstances?

May God have mercy on your soul if you do.

When it comes to abortion, who cares if it’s not your body or your child? Contrary to popular conservative groupthink, nobody gets their rocks off with the thought of aborting pregnancies. Why can’t you people just leave people the hell alone to make their own decisions? You can’t jump on a cross and absolve them from their sins, so why do you insist on getting into the personal affairs of people who you don’t even know?

Do you allow perfect strangers to jump all into your personal business? Do you let personal strangers give you prostate exams while your doctor coaches them along? If you quit the damned ideological yapping, you’re likely to realize that there are very, very few people who would even get excited at the thought of an abortion.

Just leave people alone to make their own decisions. Isn’t that what American freedoms are all about?

Geez, I’m so friggin’ tired of this abortion crap. Damn, we have much worse problems in this country to be worried about getting between a woman and her doctor.

I would add that a culture that mindlessly worships guns and treats them as toys is responsible too. Nobody thinks the gun in their house will have negative consequences. That happens in someone else’s house, not THEIR house.

I don’t think Nancy Lanza deserved to die. I don’t think people deserve to die for not fastening their seatbelt or not paying attention to the road, but that’s the consequence of not respecting a 4000 lb car as something that can kill you and a bunch of other people.

The 1st Amendment is just as important as the 2nd Amendment. If you don’t like it, don’t go to the movies or watch tv. Pick up a book or something. Other than going to see Act of Valor, I can’t remember the last time I went to the movies to watch a movie with significant violence in it.

That could be true on increased gun sales. I do not doubt it. I’m with you 100% with that. I can’t understand how somebody can claim to be pro-life in one breath and then cheer the death penalty in the next. I personally don’t think I could ever ask a female that was carrying my child to have an abortion. If it were a life/death situation for the mother, that would be a difficult decision to make then. At the same time, I’m not going to make someone else toe the line to my beliefs. Grown folks can think for themselves. Until God gives me the power to absolve the sins of others, I have to worry about my own first before I try to tackle the sins of others. That’s just how I see it.

1) If I see a news story I assume it is generally true just like most folks.

If this one is not totally true (or fabricated) it doesn’t change the fact that:

“Not everyone is born to be a sheepdog but until the sheep in authority allow the sheepdogs to confront the wolves with deadly force BEFORE “sworn” sheepdogs can arrive then lives will be lost that need not have been.”

2) Regarding Obama and his going after guns, etc. I only hope he doesn’t use an executive order to do something stupid or to violate the Constitution.

There is a legislative process.
