U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia, generally shies from anything that smacks of liberalism. Last fall, for example, he declined to say publicly that he would vote for Barack Obama. He also campaigned in 2010 by broadcasting a commercial in which he literally shot up an environmental bill, and has earned an A rating from the National Rifle Association for his past opposition to gun-control efforts.
So this means something:
For those unable to view videos, Manchin embraces the idea of renewing a ban on the sale of assault weapons and banning large-capacity magazines, among other steps.
“We’ve never been in these waters before. We’ve had horrific crimes throughout our country but never have we seen so many our our babies out in harms way and their life taken from them, and the grief. I mean, that’s changed me, and has changed most Americans I would think. And with that, let’s look at ways that we can bring a common-sense reasonability to this discussion and bring all the adults to the table.”
Among those whom Manchin wants to invite to the discussion are leaders of the National Rifle Association. “These are good people and they need to be at the table,” Manchin says.
NRA involvement could indeed by useful in forging a compromise. But nothing in its modern history or rhetoric suggests that it was any interest in playing such a role.

bman: many schools already have resource officers, who are trained police officers, armed on campus. Universities have entire police departments. It’s all about presence and having the chance to get the jump on a fool like this. Considering his armament, I don’t know that an armed officer on campus could have stopped him. I don’t think having school officers carrying rifles is what we need.

I don’t think most conservatives right of center advocate for more guns we advocate for those who own them and who are law abiding citizens. Firearm ownership shouldn’t be for everyone. Those who disapprove of guns it’s perfectly alright not to own one. Those who’re criminals and the criminally insane we want do everything possible to prevent your possession of firearms. Those of you who’re law abiding collectors, sportsman and target shooters we want you to have the unrestricted privledge to possess firearms of any make any caliber and any style.

Yep, and like most laws depends on enforcement, as you point out. Another reason why I don’t think any upcoming legislation will do much more than nibble at the edges of what many see as the problem. It might placate a few, but even if they completely ban a certain type of gun, there are millions out there already. Pandora’s box, you know?

Okay, say you get a ban on selling assault rifles in the US, are we going to stop the manufacturing of such weapons and it’s magazines on our soil, how do you get such weapons out of circulation? Is it even practical to do such? To me, this could be about as impractical as asking 11 million illegals to self deport. I don’t see how we could pull off a manufacturing ban and making it illegal to own an assault rifle. Real questions, not trying to be snarky…

Ask yourself this, the most recent mass murder by those who used assault rifles especially since 1999 at Columbine those horrific event all have occurred at locations where you can not carry weapons on the premises. Why is that?
Another thing, how come we don’t have fully trained armed personnel at these vunerable places ready to take out those individuals/ groups that want to do such things? I’d be for a 3-5 person “swat team” assigned to each school to respond to such incidents and to provide security…

Friends, it’s time to take a hard look at ourselves as a nation. What are we?
We are nation of war. We are nation of inequality. We are a nation of gratuitous violence on television and in our movies. We are a nation controlled by powerful special interests and corporations who have bought and paid for our elected officials.
But, first and foremost, we are — by and large — a nation of apathy. We want “someone else” to do it for us. As long as it doesn’t affect us personally, we don’t want to be bothered.
Our leaders have found a way to have never-ending war without it really affecting most of the populace. Our leaders have found a way to turn the mentally ill out into the streets without any public outcry. We can only bemoan these tragedies after the fact.

I know a lot of responsible owners out there. I asked my dad, who grew up hunting and only quit going when arthritis made it too painful, how he felt about all the ruckus over the large clip, assault rifles, etc. He said, “son, if you’re good, you only need one shot per target. Did you read the post a mother did on her son’s mental illness? It paints another picture of the fear that some parents go through when they have mentally challenged children, who are prone to violence.
Its called “I am Adam Lanza’s Mother”. It’s a very good read:
Liza Long, a writer based in Boise, says it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.
While every family’s story of mental illness is different, and we may never know the whole of the Lanzas’ story, tales like this one need to be heard — and families who live them deserve our help. ……………………..I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.
A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7 and 9 year old siblings knew the safety plan — they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to.

Matthew 28:
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

And since many here contend that armed security would not prevent such an incident, I suggest you waltz into the local courthouse, bank, Governor’s office, or the White House and whip out a toy rifle and start pointing it around? Say bang to yourself rapidly and see how many “shots” you get off.

Wasn’t the intent of the example to show how vastly superior the UK, Japan and Autstralia were because of their firearm restrictions? The underground is still going to have guns in America, even if they confiscate all the guns from law abiding citizens. Maybe you can offer yourself up (and your mysterious fetus) to those with evil intent, and they will spare the rest of the world. Just think of what a hero you’d be.

It is my duty to attempt to live, to the best of my sinful ability, as close a life to glorify God…
Wow.
Just wow.
The guy who would execute women for having abortions is “glorifying god”.
Talk about a complete fraud.
Gandhi was right. Our Christians are so unlike Christ.

I’m gonna go out on a limb, but not too far, and say the ongoing four year recession has a lot to do with the increase in these mass killings.
Psychopaths will always be probed to violence, and there is never an excuse.
But it’s possible some of these events would’ve been avoided in better times. And both parties are to blame for the recession. But the buck stops at the president’s desk.

I read what I could find about Ms. Lanza. Only evidence about her being a survivorist was a comment she made to a friend about preparing for economic collapse.
She had taken up target shooting as a hobby. She didn’t have to work, so she had a hobby.
She struggled with her son. She, not being a trained mental health professional, probably had no idea troubled her son was, or she was in denial.
She was murdered in her bed. She had family and friends who are also grieving. I’ve read here today that she got what she deserved. Really?

zeke,
You’re correct…true military shoulder assault weapons have a selector for semi-automatic fire or automatic fire either fully automatic or 2 to 3 round bursts. Automatic weapons can only be possessed by private citizens with special licensing permits. Typically the collector as you won’t find many shooting ranges that allow automatic weapons.

Reports are that the shooter became more disturbed in the last few weeks, and was burning himself last week, When someone starts injuring himself, it’s time to take him to a mental facility for observation.
We need more education on mental illness and warning signs.

godless: Nancy Lanza was a self-professed survivalist and doomsday prepper. Her son was a diagnosed Asperger Syndrome sufferer. Nancy Lanza was a gun person. The mistake she made was not keeping her guns in a safe with a combination lock.

After the law is changed (outlawing abortion) I would hope their are penalties in place to fit the crime. Personally I would advocate a murder change and since it would be with malice and could have been prevented in the first place then the death penalty would certainly be on the table.

“The mistake she made was not keeping her guns in a safe with a combination lock.”
Worse yet she took her son to the shooting range and taught him how to operate and effectively shoot firearms, evidently in a mothers effort to bond with her mentally disturbed son. This was truly a sad story that demands examination from a variety of perspectives beyond just simply passing feel good gun laws.
