Signs of change on assault weapon ban
U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia, generally shies from anything that smacks of liberalism. Last fall, for example, he declined to say publicly that he would vote for Barack Obama. He also campaigned in 2010 by broadcasting a commercial in which he literally shot up an environmental bill, and has earned an A rating from the National Rifle Association for his past opposition to gun-control efforts.
So this means something:
For those unable to view videos, Manchin embraces the idea of renewing a ban on the sale of assault weapons and banning large-capacity magazines, among other steps.
“We’ve never been in these waters before. We’ve had horrific crimes throughout our country but never have we seen so many our our babies out in harms way and their life taken from them, and the grief. I mean, that’s changed me, and has changed most Americans I would think. And with that, let’s look at ways that we can bring a common-sense reasonability to this discussion and bring all the adults to the table.”
Among those whom Manchin wants to invite to the discussion are leaders of the National Rifle Association. “These are good people and they need to be at the table,” Manchin says.
NRA involvement could indeed by useful in forging a compromise. But nothing in its modern history or rhetoric suggests that it was any interest in playing such a role.

Using the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution as a backdrop for justifying owning ANY type of gun is preposterous.
If one looks at the letter of the Amendment and the spirit of the Amendment, it is easily determined the 2nd Amendment was used as a means of the 13 colonies to protect themselves from the tyranny of the king(government).

Milton: mental health has been a low priority item in most state budgets for years, and is often one of the easiest line items to cut because so few ever complain. Do you know of any current legislation on that in Georgia or any in the last decade? I don’t recall any, and I bet most people don’t, because it isn’t considered a problem until something like this happens. It’s also not a political “hot topic” like gun legislation, voting rights, and entitlements. I don’t know of many on either side of the aisle who are championing mental health, to be honest.

Piedmont and WellStar, two of Atlanta’s largest hospital systems, said Monday they are forming an insurance company — a bold move in a rapidly changing health care marketplace.
By elbowing their way into the domain of Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna and United Healthcare, the hospital systems could dramatically increase the competition in the state’s insurance marketplace. The move could also change the way patients get care, because the hospital systems will have a financial stake in keeping patients healthy and controlling costs.
Finally, maybe someone can break big insurance’s stranglehold on our healthcare system. I still think that our federal government should open hospitals in the mold of the VA as a last resort.
BTW, this whole gun control debate reminds me of when Jerry Maguire quit his job and gave his rousing speech. Things “got back to normal” very quickly. That’s the way I see this going down. Lot’s of talk now, but no action when it all dies down.

Now just think what a better chance she would have had if she was armed and how many of those poor kids lives could have been saved,

In other words, the magazine capacity doesn’t really matter. In fact, the larger the capacity, the more likely it will jam for someone who doesn’t know what the heck they are doing. It’s even a problem in the military during a firefight …………… trust me on that !!!

Adam Lanza, who committed these terrible murders, suffered from Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism.
His Mother, a self-professed “doomsday prepper” and gun “crazy,” in my opinion, bears a lot of the blame for this tragic incident in that she did not keep her guns secure — especially with a mentally challenged person in the household.
We can speculate forever about what motivated Adam Lanza to commit these horrible murders. But we know that his Mother created the opportunity for him to do so and paid the ultimate price.

Several problems with that notion:
1. Her firepower wouldn’t have matched his anyway. Her only chance would have been to hit him first, and he was loaded and firing. There are myriad dangers with loaded weapons being in a school, even in the principal’s hands.
2. The more armed folks you have in a school building, the more chances there are for an accident. Let ONE kid get killed accidentally, and watch what happens.
3. I work with teenagers all day. No matter how well-trained I might be, I don’t want a loaded weapon within their reach. If it’s not loaded and ready, would it really help in a case like Newtown? Not to mention some of the adults, who I wouldn’t trust with any kind of gun.
The “more guns” argument isn’t going to get any further than the banning of them will, in my opinion.

And those weapons were designed for use by highly-trained soldiers whose target was identified. The mental preparation for handling and using them alone was much, much more than most non-military citizens will ever have. The military had the latest technology available, as they should. I’m not so sure about many average joe’s out there. Some are very skilled and capable, some not so much. And the line between them is a bit blurry these days.

Would it not be a good idea to have a security guard present at schools? I asked that the only night, but was met by only a boozed-up doggone….
I saw a plan that this conservative would support. Tax all movies and video games enough to pay for at least one armed security guard at every school.

Might make some feel better, I guess. At best, it’s symbolic legislation meant to create a narrative. Two things will happen. First, the guns currently out there will become more valuable and collectible to some who probably shouldnt’ have them anyway, but will manage to get one whether legal or not. Second, it creates a public discussion of the gun that decreases its popularity in the general population and adds a potential layer of charges and punishments if one is used in a crime. I don’t think you guys need to worry about the legislation too much. The really radical stuff won’t make it past the front page news anyway.

What makes you think that an elementary school principal is better trained to handle this kind of situation?
