Signs of change on assault weapon ban
U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia, generally shies from anything that smacks of liberalism. Last fall, for example, he declined to say publicly that he would vote for Barack Obama. He also campaigned in 2010 by broadcasting a commercial in which he literally shot up an environmental bill, and has earned an A rating from the National Rifle Association for his past opposition to gun-control efforts.
So this means something:
For those unable to view videos, Manchin embraces the idea of renewing a ban on the sale of assault weapons and banning large-capacity magazines, among other steps.
“We’ve never been in these waters before. We’ve had horrific crimes throughout our country but never have we seen so many our our babies out in harms way and their life taken from them, and the grief. I mean, that’s changed me, and has changed most Americans I would think. And with that, let’s look at ways that we can bring a common-sense reasonability to this discussion and bring all the adults to the table.”
Among those whom Manchin wants to invite to the discussion are leaders of the National Rifle Association. “These are good people and they need to be at the table,” Manchin says.
NRA involvement could indeed by useful in forging a compromise. But nothing in its modern history or rhetoric suggests that it was any interest in playing such a role.

Well, I’m tired of all the jawing about this shooting. We all know that if there’s 300 million guns in the hands of private citizens there’s no way to get them back. And we all know that any bill to outlaw assault rifles now would be deader than 4 o’clock in the morning if it ever reached the House or Senate floor. Outlawing those guns would be outlawing hooch. We saw how good that Prohibition did.
So I’m going to set back tonight and listen to the music of one of the finest singers, songwriters, and poets that God ever give breath. Sometimes it just don’t seem fair that one person could get that much music talent while most of us can’t even whistle in tune. Even Roy Orbison paid tribute to him. Yes. And we’ve discusssed that before. It is, in essence, the laws recognition that in killing both the woman and her foetus the killer has taken from the family *2* “things” that the family is presumed to value. It is not legal recognition of the personhood of the foetus.

I don’t see how an assault weapon ban on handguns, long guns, high capacity magazines can be enforced or implemented without creating black market enterprises that would do far less in keeping these weapons and accessories out of the hands of criminals and the criminally insane. Sounds more like Washington phony feel good legislation that won’t objectively address the need to better protect our citizens.

The Australians had a gun buyback program that was apparently quite successful, drastically reducing the number of guns in that country. Granted there are many more guns in this country currently, but that doesn’t mean that a buyback program couldn’t be successful. Perhaps assess a 2-3% tax on each gun purchase (assuming we haven’t killed the abominable Second Amerndment outright, as I would favor) to help fund the buybacks.
You people are way too politically cautious. You shoot way too low.

Also, the kids in FCA clubs in my local area schools pray IN the school building, before and after school, and openly recruit members at orientation events. I have no problem with them having bible study, talking about Jesus, or praying to the Almighty on school grounds.

Did the Fort Hood mass killer use a Bushmaster? Oh, that’s right, we don’t talk about him, do we? It isn’t the gun that kills, it is the psychopath with an agenda pulling the trigger that does the killing and if they couldn’t find a gun, they would use something else. Pertaining to guns, the problem with liberals is that they avoid placing the blame on the individuals and the society that created them because it is so easy to try and place the blame on an inanimate object which can do nothing unless it is picked up and used. Ironically, in certain circumstances, the liberals also are quick to blame an individuals “background” for excusing their abhorrant behaviour, depending upon who or what race or religion the killer is. Mass killers (or serial killers) are predominately people with high IQ’s and if they couldn’t express their rage with a gun, they would use something else.
And, they always choose a place for carrying out their carnage in which they know they will not encounter any defensive measures. This kid knew there wouldn’t be any resistance at the school in the form of “return fire”. The Colorado shooter knew he wouldn’t encounter any resistance at the theater he chose because he specifically picked one which banned legally concealed weapons by its patrons. There were four others there showing the same movie which did allow legal concealment. These people know what they are doing and they find a way to kill.

Interesting you should bring up the Dems and the ACLU…one of the sponsoring parents is both…and a, gasp, BAPTIST!
Why would I not bring them up? They are an arem of the democrat party just as the New Black Panthers, NAACP, Westboro fruits and the like….
