Signs of change on assault weapon ban
U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia, generally shies from anything that smacks of liberalism. Last fall, for example, he declined to say publicly that he would vote for Barack Obama. He also campaigned in 2010 by broadcasting a commercial in which he literally shot up an environmental bill, and has earned an A rating from the National Rifle Association for his past opposition to gun-control efforts.
So this means something:
For those unable to view videos, Manchin embraces the idea of renewing a ban on the sale of assault weapons and banning large-capacity magazines, among other steps.
“We’ve never been in these waters before. We’ve had horrific crimes throughout our country but never have we seen so many our our babies out in harms way and their life taken from them, and the grief. I mean, that’s changed me, and has changed most Americans I would think. And with that, let’s look at ways that we can bring a common-sense reasonability to this discussion and bring all the adults to the table.”
Among those whom Manchin wants to invite to the discussion are leaders of the National Rifle Association. “These are good people and they need to be at the table,” Manchin says.
NRA involvement could indeed by useful in forging a compromise. But nothing in its modern history or rhetoric suggests that it was any interest in playing such a role.

Yep, Jay and the news media are whipping unborn fetuses around, bashing people over the head about the death of innocent kids in a school. Why should anybody even think that somebody’s going to benefit from this other than kids being safer where they are? Isn’t that what this is really supposed to be about?
I made the point last week that this country works hard at protecting kids. Given the reaction of the jackasses in light of this shooting, I may have to amend my position in that most people in this country work hard at protecting kids. This discussion should be about what we need to do to ensure the safety of children who SHOULD be safe when they are in the classroom. Why we’re getting lectures on what constitutes a child in the womb is one of those things that leave me thinking “What the f**k is wrong with these people?”

The 2001 and 2002 measures included a controversial line that proved to be a sticking point. It said, “A live child born as a result of an abortion shall be fully recognized as a human person and accorded immediate protection under the law.”
Obama took issue with that part of the bill, saying it could interfere with a woman’s right to an abortion, as established through the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Here is an excerpt of his remarks from the 2001 floor debate:
“Number one, whenever we define a previable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we’re really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a child, a nine-month-old child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place. I mean, it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute.”

Lets just face the facts. Around 9 of 10 liberals on this blog want guns banned period but they aren’t willing to say “reapeal the 2nd” outright. The other one is willing to do the “assault” weapon ban.
I’d say probably 9 out of 10 Kurds, Cubans, North Koreans, Egyptians, and Libyan’s would disagree with our liberals and for good reason.

And huge kudos to U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia for having the moral courage to stand up to the arms industry.

Call yourself a social Christian where matching your opinions with your other social Christian is more important than being right. Every lie you tell you drag a church though your lie, every child you kill supporting the weapon that caused this destruction you drag you church through it.
