Watching the Hurricane Sandy relief concert this week, I was reminded again that a rock band that survives more or less intact for 50 years, as the Rolling Stones have now done, is simply outrageous.
Their record becomes more remarkable still when you consider that for much of that time, surviving just one year as a hard-partying Stone was like living 10 years in most other bands. Brian Jones didn’t make it through alive, but somehow the indestructible Keef Richards did. And they really don’t show many signs of slowing down.
Here’s Mick and the boys doing one of my favorites, “Paint It, Black.” Jones plays the sitar on this song, an instrument that he first saw played by George Harrison, who of course learned it from the great Ravi Shankar, who died Tuesday at the age of 92, and who was the father of Nora Jones.

Perhaps our “leaders” could start setting a better example and show respect for the President Of the United States of America.
I remember after Gifford survived her assassination, they were going to be civil. That lasted about three days.

Too funny!
The first sixteen years of my life was immersed in the Baptist Church.
Three bible study classes a week.
Three worship services a week.
Choir practice twice a week.
A weekend at Rock Eagle choir competition once a year.
Family supper every Wed. night.
RAs (GAs for girls) once a month
Four revivals every year.
Two weeks of bible school at the beginning of every summer.
Another week at my Grandmother’s church in rural east Ga.
Billy Graham’s crusade every time he came to ATL.
The passive/aggressive guilt trip aboard the shame train that you’re tying to book me on has been tried before by far more competent individuals than you.

It looks like the so-called conservatives are trying to include food stamps, disaster recovery aid for the Northeast USA, union busting in the name of reform (right-to-work) and more attempts at voter restriction, all in the name of “ensuring that there is balance between revenue and expenditures by the Federal government.”
It is breathtaking and stunning that they think people are going to support this, even their supporters.

Learning, as I did, that the Stones were going to be playing that Sandy relief gig just as I was tuning in for the first time was more than a little shocking.
I guess it’s because I’m old enough to recall a time that when the Stones did anything together as a band, live, it was somewhat epochal. And not this week I saw them crowded aboard a show that was generating buzz on account of a Nirvana (sorta-) reunion.

And I posted this on the prior blog but will repost here:
It’s not about penalties. The dealth penalty does not prevent crimes of passion or crimes resulting from mental illness. Its about taking common sense efforts to implement gun safety, to reduce the availability of large clips of ammo, to treat those with mental illness, to increase the ability of law enforcement to stop unlawful gun trafficking, to trace bullets to bring to justice those who use guns for crimes (where they don’t kill themselves). Its not about a single mass murder. Its about repeated gun violence, repeated mass murders, repeated hotheads who pull guns on kids playing music or coming home from the store. Its not about setting up a false sense of security but rather taking steps to do what we can to preclude these events, to observe, to prevent but to realize they may still occur but less frequently and perhaps over time better tools will become available.
And it is stupifying to see the arguments about how some guns were legally possessed so nothing could be done but we can’t change laws because then only guns would be held by criminals, some sort of idiotic Gun Catch-22.
The one thing that is certain. The stupidity of the NRA in putting more guns in the hands of people INCREASES the risks to our families and our children. Its time we talked SENSIBLE policies. Its time we have a debate about what does make sense and stop the stupid pointless retorts that basically we just have to accept this.

Good morning Jam..
I guess the main reason I don’t believe, I can’t believe, is what happened yesterday in Newtown. What God, if He existed would let that happen to children? What is He anyway? A scorekeeper who shouts GOOOAAALLL! when you do something good, but red cards you when you mess up? Does He hand out “attaboys” when you are good, but gives you an “awsh*t” he you are bad? Does one “awsh*t” wipe out all the “attaboys”? I have Grand Kids and Great Grand Kids the ages of those kids and I can only imagine the pain…
I want a Banner flown asking the NRA and all of these other “Gun Rights” nuts “Are These Kids a Human Sacrifice to the God of the Second Amendment?” It’s time we had a serious talk about assault weapons and semi-automatic hand guns. They make lousy hunting weapons and their only reason for existence is to kill people. It has to stop!

God has to be invited in. When God is invited OUT by the gub’ment and “Supreme” Court the schools are void of God. The children in the schools are void of God. In to that void comes sin and violence. Corbie – You should read and study the Bible before rushing to blame God. God does not cause harm to any one. When you don’t invite God in to your life He cannot enter. God does not pick and chose. You do. You choose to not have God in your life. The Bible says that ignorance of the Word (the Word of God is the Bible) is a dangerous thing. God is LOVE and can do no evil. When you invite God OUT of your life you invite evil in. God cannot help you unless you create the environment for God to enter.

The NRA doesn’t put guns in the hands of people. The NRA advocates for the rights of law abiding citizens who own firearms legally. This heinous mass murder at Sandy Hook was committed by a mentally deranged individual with evil in his twisted mind. A blogger yesterday made the observation that these crimes of mass murder are committed by people with mental issues. An examination of our mental health systems would be the place to start in order to minimize if not eliminate the mass murder of innocent people and in particular children. People with various mental issues need to identified and included in the data bases of people who should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms. Banning weapons or onerous gun control laws isn’t the answer to this problem. This tragedy yesterday was perpetrated in a state with some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the nation. Georgia is among the states where firearms can be easily purchased so long as one can pass the criminal background check and to the best of my knowledge we haven’t had incidents on the order of Columbine or Sandy Hook. The problem is possession of guns by criminals and mentally unbalanced individuals not gun generally.

Good morning brother Corbin.
As the irreverent but wonderful George Carlin observed:
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of sh*t you’d expect from an office temp with a bad attitude.
And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would’ve been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say “this guy”, because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man.
No woman could or would ever f*ck things up like this. So, if there is a God, I think most reasonable people might agree that he’s at least incompetent, and maybe, just maybe, doesn’t give a sh*t. Which I admire in a person, and which would explain a lot of these bad results.
I can’t even imagine the horror for those parents and families in Connecticut. And I refuse to take some prurient interest in their suffering. So I will avoid any and all stories about this incident for some time. Until my soul can bear such a load.
It breaks my heart that one well armed deviant can cause so much destruction.
But as a nation addicted to violence and destruction this is our tragic legacy.
There’s a life full of pain and a life full of glee
So you see that the rain doesn’t mean much to me
For I know that it pays making light
of living’s tragedies
Make your days be as bright
Take a few of these, the sweeter memories

I’m familiar with Perimeter Mall I was referring to shootings in schools where public outrage gets much greater coverage because it involves innocent children. The NRA has advocated for a national data base that’s well maintained and includes the groups you mentioned. Of course we need sensible laws but we don’t need restrictions on firearms or accessories such as magazine capacity or ammunition etc. Such restrictions would only create underground trafficing of these items. We haven’t been able to control illegal drugs or once upon a time alcohol, so we would only have the same problem with firearms and related products.

The bible speaks of The End Of Times, and the Devil, who knows his time is short, is trying to take as many down with him as he can?
Revelation 12:12 : But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”
The bible speaks of the devil being like a roaring lion seeking to destroy all in his path:
<1 Peter 5:8: Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
We always want to blame GOD when things go wrong, but if you look closely those that do that are following the DEVIL’s plan. We’re blaming God and absolving the devil of his actions.
God had nothing to do with what happened yesterday — give the blame to whom it belongs.

War on drugs has not worked. War on guns will not work.
Concentrate on police protection for the vulnerable first, then
the public. Metal detectors, i.d.s, and profiling.

You are spewing about God and government, yet the murder rate today is less per capita than it was 100 yrs ago.
How do you reconcile that with the rhetoric you have been spewing? Based on your own reasoning why wouldn’t the murder rate be higher?

And “bravery” – with or without quote – has nothing to do with it. Desperate people are not brave. They don’t need to be, they have desperation in it’s place. And it doesn’t matter if their desperation in non-sensical to sane people…they are still desperate.

Well out of those 22 people in China, not a single one died. Seems the common factor was a human, but the weapon used certainly impacted the outcomes.

“No Morality?…YOUR belief system is misguided. Can’t you see that if there were no guns, there would be no trigger to pull? You are a hypocrite.”
Exactly, because before guns were invented, nobody was ever killed. It just started with that gun thing.
And where exactly did God promise there would be no death and misery on this earth? Where did he promise he wouldn’t take children home before adulthood?
You sit here demanding gun control out of one side of your mouth because 20 children died while you demand millions be allowed to die through abortions out the other. Talk about hypocrite…

Again – for God to prevent an event in your life He has to be IN your life. The Bible says there will be trials and tribulations. Why hasn’t your precious gub’ment prevented this tragedy? The reality is that the gub’ment isn’t going to save you. That’s why I have a gun in my house – ’cause those drug addicts that the gub’ment won’t/ can’t control are going DOOR TO DOOR.

I don’t really want to get into religious discourse here because even though I’m a believer I don’t see this forum as the place for such discussion. No ones mind is going to be changed because blogs are too impersonal. Real quickly though God did not invent sin he only gave man the ability to make choices and man chose to invent sin through the influence of satin. God can stop satin at any point he chooses and that will occur when God determines that the time has come to do so. Until then you can blame the sin of this world along with the grief it brings on satin and people who choose his evil influence.

Deranged so-called Christians like the ones here do crack me up. I remember as a boy, when their stranglehold on this country went virtually unchallenged.
Thank god (get it?), we changed all of that.
They just need another good old fashioned genocide to make them feel happy again!
Oh father high in heaven – smile down upon your son
whose busy with his money games – his women and his gun.
Oh Jesus save me!
And the unsung Western hero killed an Indian or three
and made his name in Hollywood
to set the white man free.
Oh Jesus save me!
If Jesus saves – well, He’d better save Himself
from the gory glory seekers who use His name in death.
Oh Jesus save me!
I saw him in the city and on the mountains of the moon
His cross was rather bloody
He could hardly roll His stone.

DogGone: Mostly what I see is blaming God for not preventing it…not for causing it.
Good point. However, biblically speaking, if God had prevented it, as he has prevented so many things from happening, would man have praised God; or praised his own devices or wit — So that instead of giving God the praise, they gave it to themselves?
I saw this documentary on the Dust Bowl on PBS a few nights ago, (its causes, etc. etc.); and the orator had read a piece from a farmer who had said, “Why did God Allow this to happen?” and it struck me as odd because about 5 minutes before he read that comment from that farmer all those years ago; he was talking about a new man made invention that allowed farmers to (and i can’t remember the exact word), “over plough” fields; and how the guy who invented it was lauded as being a great inventor and a savior to the farmers.
As you know, by ‘over ploughing” the fields, is one of the causes of the Dust Bowl.

Corbin, that “Beating over the head feeling” is not coming from us, dude. We’re just posting stuff on a blog where you can leave any time you feel like you’re being beat on. That feeling is the Holy Spirit trying to get through to you. It’s same feeling you have when you do something wrong when you know better. It follows you everywhere, Corbin, whether their is a Christian nearby or not. Running from it won’t make you feel any better.

“As you know, by ‘over ploughing” the fields, is one of the causes of the Dust Bowl”
As we know NOW. That consequence was not apparent at the time that plow was introduced. It was only AFTER the conditions were studied that it became clear how much it contributed. But it was not the only factor, and one thing I disliked about that series…and I’ve watched it several times – was that it did not also discuss the issue of “clean farming”, which was a significant factor in the Dust Bowl causation also.
At the time, farmers were encouraged to keep their farms “clean” be clearing their fence rows of brush and trees, and to plow their fallow fields before winter to keep weeds from growing. Both of those practices contributed significantly to the ability of the wind to carry topsoil for greater distances. And one of the many things done to alleviate the Dust Bowl conditions was to plant trees, which they DID mention. MILLIONS of trees were planted.

Well if you take objective steps to solve problems it wouldn’t allow sufficient time for people to pontificate or assign blame.
