McCain’s ugly campaign against Susan Rice pays off

78838-large

I wonder if John McCain feels even the slightest twinge of shame over his McCarthyesque campaign to torpedo Susan Rice. Probably not. The McCain who might once have been capable of such decency hasn’t been seen in Washington in many a moon.

It’s important to make it clear that Rice wasn’t targeted because she’s a woman or because she’s black; those defenders who make such claims do her a disservice. Instead, she was targeted because she could be. McCain and his merry little band haven’t been able to lay a glove on Barack Obama, the man who denied McCain the presidency four years ago, and their increasing irrelevance has made them frustrated. But Rice? Rice was somebody they could handle.

That’s because, as U.S. senators, they had something that Rice wanted. She needed their permission to become the next secretary of state, should Obama decide to nominate her to that post, and that made her vulnerable. Through deception and ginned-up righteousness, McCain and his pals at Fox proceeded to turn Rice into the face of a Benghazi tragedy in which she had played only the most peripheral of roles. Like a husband who is angry at his wife but kicks the dog instead, they smeared her as a proxy for Obama.

Yesterday, with Rice’s withdrawal from consideration, they got the scalp they wanted. They “counted coup” on Obama, even if indirectly, and I guess they proved to themselves that they still mattered. But to a lot of other people, they proved something less flattering about themselves.

Not sure that the Rice withdrawal is a ‘payoff’ for McCain and
may hurt Kerry’s SOS chances more than help them. Hilary may
be ‘persuaded’ to stay on a bit longer.

Knoop, interesting point and from what I read about her policies she WAS more aggressive than Kerry will be, therefore, again, she may have done this country a disservice when she backed away from the senate hearings…..She well may have neen very good.. Agree with those who relate that Mcains choice of Palin was innane , this was classic death by primaries and bending to the whims of the far right. This recent election is the result of this ( and many otherZ) actions of the repubs to satisfy the TEA partiers, hopefully the repubs will advocate a more moderate collection of policies…

Ken perhaps Mcain simply thought her incompetent….Because SHE withdrew WE will never know…

But, having joked about that, I am disappointed in President Obama for not insisting that Susan Rice stand for the job. bollocks.

this was a whisper campaign – unlike Robert Bork, she had no writings that pointed to how unsuitable she was for the position.

they couldn’t say anything concrete – all they could do was say they had “concerns” about her.

this was nothing more than a smear campaign – and McCain should burn for it.

This was never about Rice’s qualifications.
Very few people have a resume that supports a nomination to the position of SoS.
Susan Rice is certainly one of them.
Nothing is new under the sun in D.C., and this is 100% political.
In an attempt to seize momentum in a power vacuum within the GOP (since the death of Reagan, ha ha), McCain has struck out against a superlative diplomat.
The real reason: the Republicans want Sen. Kerry to give up his seat in MA so that the biggest loser himself Scott Brown can run for it in a special election against whomever Gov. Patrick appoints.
The sad truth for Brown is that there is a well-qualified Kennedy waiting in the wings.

Now that is rich coming from the right, it is like these guys have a pass on telling the truth. The torpedo job on Susan Rice is equal parts spite and plotting. The GOP wants Scott Brown back in the Senate—he sounds moderate but always votes Tea Party. They think he’ll win if there’s a vacancy. But the Democrats plan to run Markey, who’s pretty popular in that state.

This is mostly vengeance on the part of McCain et al. They’ve been beaten soundly, and part of their retribution is taking out one of Obama’s favorite appointees. And they still haven’t given up on whacking Social Security and Medicare—see Real Clear Politics.com for a good rundown on this issue. There’s nothing like holding a pair of deuces and playing as if you’ve drawn a royal flush.

Let’s go over the cliff. It’s better than allowing the Republicans to beat up seniors. People will adjust to the higher taxes, and a good cliff-dive will restore some humility to the arrogant Republicans.

He did this to increase his chances of being re-elected. It worked, but now that it is clear the Rice willingly deceived the American public, Obama dropped her like a bad habit.

Both sides are in a debate about Susan Rice and most of you have no clue about her via policy. Some of you should do your homework before spewing talking points from your side…………..

……….. Rice was in the vanguard of the Libya operation, and is credited with pressuring a reluctant President to get involved in an adventure he was sure to regret. As the idiotic left-neocon John Avlon enthused in Newsweek/The Daily Beast:……..

“The Libyan airstrikes mark the first time in U.S. history that a female-dominated diplomatic team has urged military action……………

The Real Problem With Susan Rice

…………. To understand what’s at stake in Rice’s potential nomination, it’s more useful to listen to a different set of interviews, conducted roughly a decade ago. Between the fall of 2002 and the spring of 2003, NPR’s Tavis Smiley interviewed Rice four times about the Bush administration’s looming war with Iraq. I’ve spent the better part of an afternoon listening to those interviews and I still can’t tell whether Susan Rice supported the war or opposed it…………

At the risk of projecting a bit…

I thought he had grown a couple, but now I’m not so sure.

Can we who are rational please dispense with this ongoing “does Obama have stones” drama? Obviously the man who said “please proceed, Governor” has courage and a willingness to pick and fight some tough battles. This must not have been one he especially wanted.

I’ve called Obama an “a$$hole” exactly once—it was when he announced verrrry quietly, I think over a weekend that he was ending his membership in Trinity United Church of Christ, back in ‘08. I was furious at him. If ever there was a hill he should have been willing to die on, it was over his own freedom to worship where he chose, and I was certain that he was being a coward. Did I mention I was furious?

It generally sinks in sometime later that the “god damn America-gate” thingie, or the “butthurt over Benghazi” business, it isn’t about me, or you, or what we dirty effing hippies want.

It’s about the course Obama and (now that he’s President) his Administration are trying to chart. We have little beyond the first clue of what their actual must-haves / nice-to-haves / ok-we-can-fall-back-here lists look like. I don’t mean that as a knock, it’s just what it is, in any Administration.

” I’m losing respect for John McCain. ”

you’re only just now losing respect for McCain ???

I lost any final shred of respect I had for him in the early 1990s for the shameful way he treated the Clintons

you good ol boys still crying the liberal line… didn’t you get the election results???? Your party is not the face of America anymore, You tried jerry mandering, shortening election days, voter ID, and you still LOST BIG…. Now you’re blaming the closest thing to an electable candidate you had.. Gingrich, Santorum, or Caine would have lost by a bigger margine…. So you Good Ol Boys go ahead and bask in this Susan Rice victory, Come mid terms you will be sorry for it.

Rice either willfully lied to the American public for political gain, or she was duped into it by Obama. If she willfully lied, then she shouldn’t be promoted. If Obama duped her into it, then the blame lies with him.

. “Moderate Republican” is the oxymoron of all oxymorons. There’s one, so you can drop the plural stuff. McCain is no moderate. Graham is no moderate. Collins is the only GOP moderate in the Senate

Damn, I guess they have a DeLorean or some other time machine, huh? What a way to put your critical thinking skills on display for the world to see. We can use the world’s most powerful electron microscope to see them in their full glory…

You do realize that the so-called coverup came AFTER the attack, right? Geez….. Somebody must be passing out the stoooopids today.

Rice either willfully lied to the American public for political gain, or she was duped into it by Obama. If she willfully lied, then she shouldn’t be promoted. If Obama duped her into it, then the blame lies with him.

So what should happen if she read talking points from a memo prepared by intelligence analysts from the CIA? You know, the place where the actual intel came from? The CIA is not the White House, and Obama is not the director of the CIA, contrary to popular misguided conservative thinking.

John McCain is evrything thats wrong with the GOP, he was once an honorable moderate, He ran for the presidency on a conservative platform and got flattened just like Romney… Yet the party still don’t get it… this country is not a right leaning country..Stay out of our bedrooms, and religious beliefs.

McCain does something good for once and you want to call it McCarthyite? Susan Rice is a lying witch who facilitated genocide in Africa in the 1990s and now LIED to the nation about who killed our Ambassador and four other brave souls in Benghazi, and she should be Secretary of State?!
Obama is in bed with Al Qaeda in Syria and Libya-that’s who’s running Libya since Obama’s illegal war in that country, and his illegal murder of Qaddafi-in collaboration with Al Qaeda!

And if you want to accuse someone of “McCarthyism”, why don’t you go after Obama for the NDAA,? You think it’s okay for the President to insist on a law that would allow American Citizens to be indefinitely detained in a military prison without a trial??? And don’t forget his love of sending drones into Pakistan to kill “terrorists” and hundreds of innocent bystanders!

Please-don’t pretend this is about party or right vs. left-Obama makes Dick Cheney look like a Liberal!

I think it was a deliberate plan. The Republicans were smarting from the election smackdown. The Dems wanted to show the American public, just how bad the Republicans can be…so that when 2014 comes around, the Dems will be able to show the American public (along with the budget cliff discussions) on how incompetent the party of “no” can be. Kerry was the candidate all along, and Rice took the fall, to embarass the Republicans. Rice will re-appear…in a better position somewhere in the Obama Cabinet, AND the Clinton Cabinet. Remember, she took the bullet for Mrs. Clinton as well.

Do you Moonbats really think that if the Benghazi mess was as clean as you would like to believe that Obama would have backed away from Rice?

Rice withdrew at Obama’s request in hopes the situation will fade to black. Her confirmation hearing would have made public things Obama prefers not.

You can demonize McCain and whoever you want. That does not change the fact that Rice knowinlgy and intentionally participated in a coverup just before the election to protect Obama. BTW, there are more Congressmen than McCain, Graham and Ayotte who think she did and would not support her as SoS.

As you who will be the SoS nominee, Kerry will likely be Obama’s ridiculous choice. Little Barry continues to disappoint.

Nonsense. And if you’d actually read the transcript of his testimony–which is what your whining here is surely based on–before the Senate in ‘71, in its entirety, and not in carefully edited dribs and drabs, you wouldn’t be embarrassing yourself with such foolishness now.

BTW, this is the third strike for Rice. She was involved with the bad decisions on the Rwanda/Congo genocide and Bozo’s decision not to take OBL when offered up on a platter. Yet the Left thinks she would be a good SoS. I wish I was surprised.
