I wonder if John McCain feels even the slightest twinge of shame over his McCarthyesque campaign to torpedo Susan Rice. Probably not. The McCain who might once have been capable of such decency hasn’t been seen in Washington in many a moon.
It’s important to make it clear that Rice wasn’t targeted because she’s a woman or because she’s black; those defenders who make such claims do her a disservice. Instead, she was targeted because she could be. McCain and his merry little band haven’t been able to lay a glove on Barack Obama, the man who denied McCain the presidency four years ago, and their increasing irrelevance has made them frustrated. But Rice? Rice was somebody they could handle.
That’s because, as U.S. senators, they had something that Rice wanted. She needed their permission to become the next secretary of state, should Obama decide to nominate her to that post, and that made her vulnerable. Through deception and ginned-up righteousness, McCain and his pals at Fox proceeded to turn Rice into the face of a Benghazi tragedy in which she had played only the most peripheral of roles. Like a husband who is angry at his wife but kicks the dog instead, they smeared her as a proxy for Obama.
Yesterday, with Rice’s withdrawal from consideration, they got the scalp they wanted. They “counted coup” on Obama, even if indirectly, and I guess they proved to themselves that they still mattered. But to a lot of other people, they proved something less flattering about themselves.

Like that’s a big difference?
Dude, that’s a huge difference. Hell, that’s like the Falcons defense going to the game of their opponent a week before they play them and knock the hell out of the starting quarterback in anticipation of what he “might” do the next week against them.
This is NOT the same tactics as before. There have been attacks done by both sides, but at least previous attacks were done on ACTUAL nominees, not somebody who MIGHT be nominated.
As to intestinal fortitude, I think she showed more “Country First” by stepping out of the way than anybody else in DC has ever shown. The people who work for DoS don’t need that kind of drama, and if your Republican crushes (See, I can do that BS too) were already dogging her now, what do you think would happen to that department and the people working there if she were actually nominated?
State has people in damn near every hotspot on the globe. Beyond ambassadors and such, you have security personnel who put their ass on the line everyday. These things tend to get lost in these political games, but yeah, you keep on believing this is the same as before.
Glad to see you’ve quit trying to hide your partisanship. At least you’re finally being honest about something.

Don’t you think it’s a little strange, Jay Bookman, that courtesy of a handful of right wing senators we have another fake outrage scandal over an attack on an installation (I’m not even going to call it an “embassy”) in a country where we joined forces with very questionable elements to overthrow its government just last year?

I think Susan Rice sort of took the wind out of McCain and Graham’s sails when she took herself out of the nomination process.
They were obviously all set to throw a hissy-fit and now they just look like bullies that prevented an excellent candidate for one of the country’s most important positions from even being vetted.
Great job guys.

Good morning looters. Let’s see what Bookman nonsense stirs up the old peanut gallery today…oh, it’s the attack on another Republican this morning. Once again, the face of liberalism. You myrmidons all know the drill. You all will join in with your hateful critique, hit the new leftist sound byte of “angry old white man” thing, and Fox News is a conspirator in the campaign against the Obama regime.
Common sense will tell you boys and girls that Susan Rice carried the water for the Obama cover-up and carried the lie so badly that the outcome was inevitable. You might say that when you play with fire you are going to get burnt. She did nothing more than you myrmidons do with Bookman and she ruined her chance of being Sec. Of State. Well, liars aren’t held in high regards for that position.
Put away the torches and pitch forks. Go lick your wounds and play nice. We still recall the tap dance your side did on the former Attorney General under GWB and the 8 year assault on GWB to get to where you are today. You liberals are such hypocrites. Who’s up to bat next? Mr. Heinz Ketchup? Funny how you hypocrites don’t chastise him for being rich, but go after the rich outside your elite circle.

The first time McCain ran for president I would have voted for him even though I vote Dem more than not. A veteran, a man of principle, he was really someone I could identify with.
No more, he has pandered and compromised and pretty much sold his soul to the republican right in hopes of, and it has cost him everything.
The fact that he deep-sixed Rice, but selected Palin for VP says it all about John McCain, and/or the people he has surrounded himself with. A bitter old man, irrelevant in the Senate, who needs to step out of the way and let some of the forward thinkers of the day take over; What a sad ending to a once proud veteran.

Really , this attack on Rice was not about Obama or Rice. it was about John Mccain trying to sound tough with the Fo- follower crowd, who distrust him anyway. This is just a a Made for FOX event and does the president little harm. In the long run it will tarnish the McCain legacy. McCain is frustrated with the answers he was getting ( he said as much) and truth be told, this attack blindsided the state department and CIA who forgot that there are people in that part of the world who REALLY hate us – -believing in stead that the help we gave Libyan rebels would somehow protect US. The truth is that the administration cannot bring back the dead and most americans will not blame Obama. This frustrates the heck of of JM.

Interesting article on the continued crap plight of african american men…guess the GOP is to blame here as well…
“Once upon a time, liberalism was about something more than the marginal tax rates and the interests of the middle class. Leaders such as Hubert Humphrey, Robert F. Kennedy and Daniel Patrick Moynihan focused national sympathy on marginalized groups. Moynihan gave sophisticated attention to African American males in his 1965 report on black families in America.”

I’ve seen that idea tossed around the internet at different places. If it was me to decide who to nominate, I’d find somebody way off the radar just to piss off the establishment. I’d have to make sure it’s somebody that they would look like idiots if they tried to go attack mode, but somebody who they would hate to nominate.
In all seriousness though, I think the president should be able to nominate and have his picks confirmed without all this crap unless that pick has a serious criminal issue or some issue that specifically impedes their ability to do the job they’re being nominated for. The whole idea of the nomination process has been so f**ked up that I think it’s useless now. Then again, most anything a politician gets involved with ends up being f**ked up anyway.

Jay,
The bizarre part about the Susan Rice situation is her political views lean toward interventionalist / NEOCON on foreign policy, which matches McCain and company……verse Kerry who is more old school and conservative about getting involved in foreign entanglements, and is now the nominee via the attacks by McCain and company. This is typical Washington, we debate all the bs and avoid policy. What we really need is a debate on the roll of the USA in the world. I will give Ron Paul credit for being the only candidate to bring this up clearly on either side. I would not go as far as him on foreign policy, but I definitely lean way farther his way than the NEOCON view……….

Here is my take, The Repubs knew that if Rice was knocked out of contention they could expect Obama to pick Kerry for the nomination, thus opening a Senate seat in Mass. They want control of the senate and will take it one seat at a time if the can. Now we will see if Brown has a chance to regain his seat in the June special election. So, nothing personal here just power politics played by the goon squad.

BRO,
Despite our spat this morning, I definitely agree with your 9:56. Maybe we will be surprised..Huntsman seems to have the right tone and experience…that will happen when pigs fly out of my rear.

SB—- So I guess McCain also knew he was lying? It works both ways. SO I could reword your post: McCain intentionally lied to America, do we understand that, he intentionally lied, he is just as corrupt as Bush!

Blind liberals can’t understand why people did not like the fact that Obama’s administration chose someone without a clue about Benghazi to go on all the news shows and “slant the facts” during the last weeks of the presidential campaign. After all, everyone knows that thanks to this administration al quaeda is now irrelevant.

It’s time for McCain to disappear. He’s contributed nothing to the good of the country, and
his age reflects his very bad, surly, bitter attitude. He acts like the loser he is.

At the risk of stating the obvious–what BO and Krugthulu want are, clearly, not one and the same.

Where was McCains / Grahams/Collins indignation when Condaleza Rice mislead us about Sadam’s WMS or Colin Powells mis-adventure and falsehoods @ the United Nations regarding the same?
It amazes me that McCain, after being personally attacked by the right wing of the GOP and practically branded a coward for being a POW, can still carry their water. He has become irrelevant nationally after his pitiful run for the White House and creating the Sara Palin legand. Time to stand down Senator.( You have your “victory” why not go out now)?

jay it is “funny” (not funny ha ha though) how libs think politics is “ugly” if against a lib, but when same is done against a con, it is just good politics or deserved or whatever justification can be employed at the time. libs – the party of the double standard.

RB, along with pogo, your racist demons are legendary here.
You absolutely are obsessed with black people. I should say their failures, because I have never once seen you write one single, solitary positive thing about them. Not one.
Living in the 1950s, like you do, is not emotionally healthy.
Get help. Preferably from a black psychologist! LOL…

Stands,
Amazingly, it does not always take a medical evaluation and tons of systematic research to note that somone is not brilliant. (Remember Traficant form Ohio?)No, I’m not talkin’ about someone with a different opinion; I’m talking about someone who does his best every time he speaks to back up all notions of lack of intelligence. And don’t try to bring race, arrogance, or anything else into it……I do not take tea and crumpets! Lack of intelligence know no racial/sexual of other boundaries. There are plenty in all groups to supply the need.

I thought Huntsman for a minute, but I don’t know if he’s the one I’d put at DoS. With his business background, I think he’d be better suited for Commerce if he were to be used, but that’s just my view.
