It’s an uncomfortable question, which means that it’s right in Barbara Walters’ wheelhouse. As she put it to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie:
For those who can’t watch video, here’s how the exchange goes:
WALTERS: “There are people who say that you couldn’t be president because you are so heavy. What do you say to that?”
CHRISTIE: “It’s ridiculous. I mean, that’s ridiculous. I think people have watched me for a number of weeks in Hurricane Sandy doing 18-hour days, so I don’t really think that would be a problem.”
I’m not so sure that’s true. As Christie acknowledged to Walters, he isn’t merely overweight, he’s seriously overweight. That struck home during last night’s broadcast of the Hurricane Sandy charity concert in New York, which Christie attended. When the camera panned to Christie, standing in a crowd surrounded by other people, the size differential between the governor and those around him was startling.
Some have raised the question of whether Christie’s weight reflects a character flaw or lack of personal discipline, but I’m with the governor on that one: “It’s ridiculous.” That alleged “lack of discipline” doesn’t show up in other aspects of his life, and as Christie aptly noted, it doesn’t affect his work ethic.

It does, however, raise significant health issues. If you look at how George W. Bush visibly aged over his eight-year presidency, and how Barack Obama has aged, the toll taken by the job and the campaigning becomes pretty clear. And unlike Christie, both Bush and Obama are pretty serious about staying in good physical shape. It’s perfectly legitimate, even necessary, to consider health when electing a president, and although Christie has never revealed his actual weight, it’s pretty clear that he would fall in the far right category in the chart below:

There’s also the image issue. Rationally speaking, you cannot judge a person’s character or intelligence by his or her weight or physical attractiveness, but the truth is that we do it all the time, without even thinking about it.
As researchers Lucy Watson and Lucy Johnston write in summarizing scientific studies into the question:
“Attractive people are perceived to be happier, more sociable and more successful than unattractive individuals. Attractive, as compared to unattractive, individuals are judged more highly on academic tasks, are treated more generously when grades are assigned and receive more support. Furthermore, physical attractiveness has been found to affect juror decisions, helping behavior, parents’ attitudes toward their own infants, psychological well-being of adults, status cues, social and professional competence evaluations, level of prestige of a given occupation and employment and job evaluations.”
Given that psychological reality, it’s no surprise that voters tend to gravitate to candidates who look presidential. And in his present physical condition, that is not a test that Christie passes.

Seriously, Parrot, I want to hear about this mythical ‘viable Republican candidate’ the GOP has been hiding all this time!
Please, trot him or her out and tell us, why, oh, why didn’t you tell us about this person earlier? Like about a year or so ago, during the GOP primaries? (giggling)
If this putative ‘viable GOP candidate’ was all that, then it seems to me that y’all could have saved yourselves a lot of heartache and bellyache by simply putting Mystery Candidate up in 2012 and telling Romney to go take a hike.

IT’S THE FOOD!!!
The puzzling case of boys who are hitting puberty earlier
While we’re not likely going to see hirsute five-year-olds who need a shave, researchers say boys are hitting puberty as early as 9 and 10 years of age.
The research question: The scientific consensus is that girls are hitting puberty earlier than ever, developing breasts as young as 7 or 8. Experts credit higher levels of childhood obesity (body fat is linked to estrogen production) and chemicals in our food and water. Is the same trend affecting boys?
The outcome: The researchers discovered that, on average, boys were starting puberty almost two years earlier than expected. White and Hispanic boys started puberty at age 10, or a year and a half earlier than what was considered “average.” African-American boys hit puberty around age 9 — two years earlier. What’s more: Roughly 9 percent of whites experienced testes enlargement as early as age 6. For Hispanic boys it was 7 percent, and for blacks it was nearly 20 percent. Across all groups, pubic hair growth started a year after testes enlargement.
What the experts say: “a researcher at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The results shouldn’t be interpreted to establish a “new normal,” says Herman-Giddens. “Just because this is happening doesn’t mean this is normal or healthy.”
The lesson: Something is behind the change — we just don’t know what, at least not yet.

Welcome to the Occupation I can promise you Jay did not make up this question of appearance with Christie. Obesity is at crisis proportions especially in nearby New York City where the mayor has outlawed big drinks. You got to ask yourself what is wrong with a guy who lets himself go like this. I would wonder if this weight problem and lack of conditioning didn’t sideline him for this year’s presidential election. He certainly could have help fill a ticket if you get my drift.

Kinda reminds me of the Georgians making fun of Palin ’cause she talked funny.
That said, Jay’s correct. We do judge people by appearances. No matter what we, ourselves, look like.
Afternoon, stands.
Was a the doc’s a while ago, he didn’t think much of BMI charts (he’s incredibly fit and lean). Was more interested in other measurements. By those charts I could way 125 and be considered in the ‘normal’ range. That’s put me in the emaciated range – and for full disclosure, after an exam at my gym, I came out ‘ideal’ on body fat and weight. So all I’m saying is, people (weightlifters) can be overweight on BMI and an underweight person can be ‘normal’ on BMI.
BTW – my niece showed parts of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to her class. The fat kid in the movie? Kids said ‘he’s not fat – he’s kinda skinny!”
Shows you why some people don’t think they’re overweight.

“Mutts are more hardy and are more apt to get the “best of both of their inherent species”.”
You’re confusing “mutts” with hybrids. A mutt is mixed breed, within the same species. A hybrid is a cross between different species – think mule here.
What you say can be true of hybrids, but not always. A mule is the best mixture of the horse and donkey, but a hinny, which is also half horse/half donkey is nowhere near as useful.
But mutts – as in mixed breed dogs, for instance – are not neccessarily better or healthier than purebreds

Lots of folks are overwight. I think, in fact, it is a concern when you are THAT MUCH overwight. It is kind of like the Dems and Repubs….the extremists on both sides are holding up the “regular” folks! When you are so big you have to put your belt on with a boomerang, there is a problem. There are many issues people battle, and I admire their fight. But when you let something whoop-up on you too badly, yeah it sort of works against you. Its like comparing the occasional drinker to the wino, or the occasional toker to the crackhead. Its the extremes that concern folks the most.

Also, on a personal level, I find his wartime service in the military to be a plus for the office in question.

That’s because of all that good food. I think Texas is one big supersized “New Orleans” .
There is just one big fusion of people, cultures, and foods!
You have the great food of Mexico intertwined with the great food of the South, intertwined with some of the greatest BarBQ’ers of all time.
When my Grand was alive and we took our yearly blues and barbque roadtrip, we’d ALWAYS find a way to end up somewhere in Texas. Even if there wasn’t a blues concert anywhere in sight, before we made it back to Washington, we’d HAVE to stop somewhere in Texas!
I miss my Grand. This is for him, one of his favorite artists:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSWTkI_aVSo
And his favorite barbeque place to eat:
With the deep roots of barbeque resonating from the depths of American history, so too did an entire genre of blues music, and the two have continued on harmoniously, hand-in-hand, through today.
The most likely regional distinctions for barbecue and blues can be found in the South. With each southern region claiming their barbecue to be the best of them all, the South is also where you’ll find some of the most heated barbecue arguments.
Every southern state and culture has perfected its own flavors through the years. Their secrets of barbecue can involve the cut of meat, the sauces and rubs, or the type of wood used to smoke flavor into the meat.
Blues music evoked a certain feeling inside people. The music was raw and full of emotion, making it perfect for the climate in the southern states. As blues music and barbecue crossed paths, it was a powerful fusion that has lasted for many generations
With blues musicians like Charlie Campbell writing innocent lyrics like “Pepper sauce mama, you make my meat red hot,” Americans began to openly celebrate their love of eating smoked barbecue meats and dance away while doing so.

Man, you are really are a goosestepping progressive aren’t you?

Furthermore, I would bet that none of the slobbering liberals here are in physical condition enough to do much more than walk to their kitchen to get themselves another beer and a sandwich. Or to walk to their mailbox to get their next government check.

Chalk up one more leg-jerker who didn’t bother to read what Jay wrote.

“…look presidential. And in his present physical condition, that is not a test that Christie passes.”
In case you haven’t answered, just what DOES look “presidential?” Do you have a William Morris profile….
Has anybody mentioned Churchill… smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish, and ported a few extra pounds…how old was he when he led the Brits through “their finest hour?” How long did he live afterward?

Joey,
I didn’t think Romney was going to win. He was weak, and when he didn’t put the hammer down on Barry after the first debate, I knew it was over. A weak candidate is a weak candidate regardless of weather a D or an R follows their name.

Just an observation, but does it seem like this blog is turning into Cynthia’s old blog? When Cyndy was around, you’d have people who hated her who wouldn’t even READ her article- they’d just come on and write something denigrating and inflammatory and would posts big long blogs about NOTHING.
That basically said:
I HATE YOU!! YOU LIBERAL!!!
YOU EFFING LIBERALS MAKE ME PUKE!!
YOU’RE DUMB AND YOU’RE A LIBERAL!!
LIBERAL MATE WITH SATAN!!!
LIBERALS EAT DONKEY MEAT!!!
FREAKING STUPID LIBERALS!!
And they’d post the same thing over and over and over again, (just in case we didn’t understand it the first time).
