What does it sound like when bullies discover that they’re losing a fight that they started, one that they’re likely to keep losing for the foreseeable future?
It sounds very much like this:
Unless he takes a more bipartisan approach to fiscal cliff negotiations, President Barack Obama “guarantees a permanent war” between Democrats and Republicans, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted Sunday.
“He wants to prove he can dominate,” Gingrich said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” adding that on fiscal cliff negotiations, Obama aims not to compromise, but to “block [House Speaker John] Boehner into collapse.”
Why the prediction of an endless partisan fight? “Because everybody on the right, at every level, sooner or later is going to get sick of it,” Gingrich said.
Correct me if I’m wrong — some will try to correct me though I’m right — but didn’t the Republicans start this all-out, scorched-earth permanent war thing? Wasn’t this whole thing their idea in the first place?
And now they beg for compromise?
It was almost exactly two years ago to the day that Speaker John Boehner made it clear that there would be no compromise in Washington. “I am not going to compromise my principles nor will I compromise the will of the American people,” he told Judy Woodruff of “60 Minutes”.
“You’re afraid of the word?” Woodruff asked.
“I reject the word,” the new speaker said.
Whatever his other failings, Gingrich knows first-hand the realities of being speaker. He knows what it’s like to have go searching for votes. So when he predicts, as he did Sunday, that “if Boehner works out an agreement with President Obama, it has to be an agreement that brings 120 or 140 House Democrats,” that tells you an awful lot.
A House majority requires 218 votes. If Boehner needs 120 to 140 Democrats to support an eventual deal, it means that close to two-thirds of his own party will probably be voting against the deal that he agrees to support. It means that Nancy Pelosi will have a lot to say about what that final package contains. And it means that the House GOP caucus will afterward find itself split between those RINOs who voted for the deal, and those hardliners who voted against it, with Boehner among those who supported it.
“(Boehner) can be the speaker of a block of Republicans working with Democrats or he can be the speaker of the hard right fighting the Democrats,” Gingrich said. “There’s no middle ground here. He will not carry the hard right for any deal.”
Again, this is a confrontation that congressional Republicans have wanted for years. They plotted and strategized to create just this opportunity, never imagining that when the moment came, they would be the ones pleading for compromise and a bit of political mercy.
And it doesn’t get any better in the immediate future. Next on the agenda when Congress returns?
Immigration reform, with Democrats pressing for a path to citizenship and Republicans again split between those who recognize the political and moral necessity of such a step, and those who, like Boehner two years ago, still reject the word “compromise”.

So it’s the GOP’s fault for paying for obama’s programs and it’s the GOP’s fault for spending too much money. Must be nice to be able to blame them for anything that happens.

Morality? “When did it become the gub’ment’s job to give people jobs? Creating the atmosphere for job growth is the best the gub’ment can do.”
That is predicated on there being an economic system that is robust enough to actually supply jobs to the people so that everyone who is willing to do so can work.
But as the latest crisis has demonstrated yet again, there is no system more cruelly inefficient in terms of human potential than capitalism.
Let’s face it, capitalism just hasn’t been able to hack it.

If that’s what you got from that, no wonder your posts are so screwed up.
The GOP keeps attempting to paint our spending problem on Obama. The problem is that spending bills originate in the House by design of the Constitution. Obama doesn’t make the spending bills, the House does. Currently the House is run by the GOP.
Funny that the GOP tries to take credit for the good that happened during the Clinton years, yet they try to blame others for the bad of the Obama years. You can’t have it both ways. It’s not a matter of pointing and laying blame. It’s a matter of being man enough to own up to your own part of the problem.

Barking Frog – Yes there are actually those out there that could qualify for disability but don’t consider themselves disabled. The problem I have is with those that are not legitimately disabled that are collecting payments. All you have to do to get on disability now is get a letter from a dishonest healthcare provider and you can get a check for the rest of your life. Simply return to the crooked provider for check ups and you get yours and the provider gets theirs from the gub’ment. Millions wasted in tax payer money. Health Care is the only sector of the economy still booming in this economy. Why? It is supported by checks from the gub’ment. Dot.com bubble, Real Estate bubble – next comes the health care bubble. Once the gub’ment goes over the cliff – POP goes the bubble! And finally the MOTHER of all bubbles the gub’ment bond bubble.

That is better than NOT ONE Republican voting in support of Obamacare.
I am glad to see Boehner “compromising” (if he really does) – now I want to see some compromising from Obama and the Democrats. Does it really matter if you get the same amount of money by eliminating deductions on the rich or by raising tax rates? Money is money and if it saves face for Republicans, I don’t care. I truly hope that Obama doesn’t make this a political statement by requiring the Republicans to go back on “no tax increase” just to use it as political fodder. Aren’t we supposed to be talking about the fiscal sanity of the country?

oh, MORALITY?
Ok, just to see if there was any real weight behind this “1/3 more not-really-disabled moocher” types you claimed, I went to the actual source:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/ProgData/awards.html
Go ahead and enter a year, and specify 12 month totals, and this is what you’ll get for total number of beneficiaries for the year ending Dec (in millions). First column is Old-Age and Survivors Insurance beneficiaries, second is for Disability Insurance awards.
2007: 3.42 / 1.32
2008: 3.72 / 1.44
2009: 4.17 / 1.57
2010: 4.05 / 1.68
2011: 3.99 / 1.63
…so not only is this “1/3 higher” figure apparently a fib, the number of beneficiaries has actually slightly decreased of late, if this site is to be believed (and I don’t know why it shouldn’t be.)
Are you going to admit you got it wrong?

As far as the R’s offer on the fiscal cliff – I can see we need some drastic changes in Medicare – it is nowhere close to a balanced budget (which it should have). Social security only needs slight tweaking, because it is much nearer being sustainable. Defense in the big monster that needs to be cut.
If you take SS and Medicare and transportation out of the budget (they have their own revenue streams and should have separate balanced budgets), then the remainder looks like this (approximately):
Defense (all) – 43%
Interest – 18%
Medicaid – 12%
Welfare – 8%
All other – 19%
So where do we need to cut?

Everyone always wants to “cut the waste”. So do I. But it is a LOT easier said than done. On the other side – there is a lot of uncollected tax receipts that we are missing because of cheating – we could spend a few million and probably reap billions.
By the way, I am all for revamping the unemployment and the welfare system. Get those people to work for what they get. Where is “workfare”? Do away with the EITC (it is another form of welfare).

“When thousands of people demonstrated against President Mubarak in January 2011, all major western media outlets sent reporters to Egypt, where they reported day and night. It was mostly inaccurate and biased, but at least they were reporting.
Now that an Islamist government—which was falsely installed by the military council—is in power, there is deafening silence. As even more young, educated democracy seekers are wounded and killed than in the Revolution of 2011, the media still cannot be lured from its hiding places.”

You are jawing with your self – in your dream world “punkin” – getting what I said a little bit out of context. But heh that;’s what you do.

hmm. Looks like fully 52% of American babies are actually conceived of that way.

Yes, let’s.

“Morality” — “You are jawing with your self”
Nope. I’m talking directly to YOU.
“– in your dream world “punkin” – getting what I said a little bit out of context”
No context involved at all. You’re quite simply *totally wrong* about how to go about getting Federal Disability. You’re either ignorant of the process and making crap up, or you’re misinformed about it, or else you’re deliberately lying to us.
So which is it?
“But heh that;’s what you do.”
No, I correct you, since you’re so often wrong on matters of fact. Come on and dance, “Morality.” I promise, this will be just as much fun as when I schooled you about FDR getting *elected* to four terms.

And it didn’t go to half staff when Bush got over 4,000 kids killed in Iraq either.

You incorrectly and purposely posted something about Egypt. Your answer to a reply to that post was a deflection to Hitler.
Correct your post about Egypt and put it in the correct context and not the incorrect context you posted then I will gladly move on to Hitler or whomever.

Now that an Islamist government—which was falsely installed by the military council—is in power, there is deafening silence.
Has anyone here opened a news.google.com or news.yahoo.com page in *any* given week in the past two years where there wasn’t at least ONE major-headline news piece about what’s going on in Egypt?
“Silence”? WTF is this guy smoking?

Indigo – I normally only answer questionable questions once – but for you NO I would not close bases in Germany and Japan. Why? Because that is part of the USA agreement at the close of WWII – we agreed to build bases and they agreed not to. It is also to our advantage for tactical reasons to have bases around the world. Now Obama recently pledged $3 billion to a group called the Muslim Brotherhood…… their objective – to destroy Israel. Would you support our tax dollars for that purpose?
