President Petraeus? Fox News sure liked the ring of it
Somehow — and that “somehow” is a no doubt fascinating story in its own right — Bob Woodward at The Washington Post has obtained a digital recording of a long, detailed conversation between Fox News correspondent KT McFarland and then-General David Petraeus in the spring of 2011 in Afghanistan during which McFarland:
A.) Urges Petraeus to run for president against Barack Obama;
Roger Ailes
B.) Tells Petraeus that she was instructed to carry that message to Petraeus by Fox News President Roger Ailes and its owner, Rupert Murdoch;
C.) Tells Petraeus that Fox would fully back his presidential campaign, and by fully back she means:
D.) Murdoch would finance the campaign. Ailes would leave Fox to run the campaign. And Fox News itself would become the house organ of the campaign. As McFarland puts it point blank, “The big boss is bankrolling it. Roger’s going to run it. And the rest of us are going to be your in-house.”
Throughout the conversation, Petraeus makes it clear repeatedly that he has no intention of running for president, and that was always my sense of him as well. He understood why others might want to project that future upon him, but he himself never gave the slightest public indication of interest in that career path.
I did have the benefit of an hour-long, one-on-one discussion with Petraeus in his office in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, several months before he became famous, and certainly long before any discussion of the presidency would have been germane. We talked instead about Iraq, counter-insurgency and military-media relations. The impression I got from that conversation, from my research and from following his subsequent career path was that Petraeus was of course a very good “political general.” He knew how to get what he wanted from the media, Congress and the bureaucracy. But he also had an infantryman’s disdain for issues such as abortion, tax rates, gun control and health-care reform, not to mention the fundraising and campaign-trail compromising that would be required. They held no interest for him. So his side of the conversation was no surprise.
On the other hand, the extent of the Fox involvement in attempting to woo Petraeus into the political world is pretty startling even to those of us who already see Fox as a blatantly political implement. And while I seriously doubt that Ailes would have actually left Fox to help Petraeus — he would have been more useful to the general/politician by staying where he is — the depth of the promised commitment is pretty clear.
At one point, in fact, McFarland explains why her bosses back home are so insistent on a Petraeus candidacy:
“Well, but . . . and here’s the thinking: that they’re nervous about. . . . They feel that Obama had this mandate. And the mandate — in his own mind. Obama wanted to do Obamacare. . . . He wanted to do environment, which is basically controlling all aspects of the economy. And education, which is the future. So he pushed for Obamacare. He got that done. They didn’t anticipate 2010 results. But he now is going to lie low and be very centrist so that they win in ’12 and they get the other two. Now, what they need — and this is not from the chiefs, this is from political people — and what they need to cement it so that it doesn’t get reversed is a third term. And that means 2016, they need to win, the Democrats need to win, and they need to win with their guy. Their kind of guy. So that then you’d have the stuff as locked in place for a generation. Nobody can come in like Reagan came in and reverse.”
Petraeus was to be the means by which that danger could be averted, which says something about how much they fear Obama and also how little faith they have in the Republican Party to produce winning candidates on its own. They saw him as a potential savior; he had no interest in being cast in that role.
Ailes, by the way, downplayed the story to the Post, as well as McFarland’s role as a messenger.
“It sounds like she thought she was on a secret mission in the Reagan administration. . . . She was way out of line. . . . It’s someone’s fantasy to make me a kingmaker. It’s not my job.”
Well, at least it shouldn’t be.
UPDATE: It’s also relevant to note how neatly this behavior dovetails with Murdoch’s very-cozy relationships with top politicians in Great Britain, where he reportedly tried to act as a kingmaker with prime ministers dating back to the time of John Major, if not earlier.

I’ve been among Rachel’s biggest fans ever since she got her own radio slot in the wee-hours on AAR. (for what it’s worth, I had no idea of her sexual orientation for some time–she occasionally mentioned her partner Susan, but that was about it.)
Followed her to evenings, watched her radio show expand to three hours, and then thrilled to see her join the ranks of the cable TeeVee punditocracy class.
In all of the years of reporting some incredibly contentious, and oftimes emotional stories–some of which certainly affected her deeply and personally, especially those involving military families, and of course marriage equality–I have never once heard or seen her cry.

1. He was right from the beginning about the foolishness of invading and occupying Iraq.
2. He is calm and even-handed (to a fault, really, sometimes, but he’s getting better) when considering matters of grave importance.
3. Do you suppose that the safety nets (beginning with FDR) have become more than safety nets? SS and Medicare were not designed to become primary retirement/medical programs…clearly you see some waste in the process alone?
Also, the same proportion of those making over $250K are not indifferent to politics because they feel, like 50% of the others who don’t vote, the government is corrupt, dysfunctional and represents only the needs of those elected and special interests.
You also may be surprised that many making over $250K work geometrically more hours than the typical 40 hour week.

It should come as no surprise that 7% of Black people voted for other than Obama. What surprises me is the number of people who earn below 50K per year that voted for Romney. There seems to be some twisted affiliation in this relationship. As Malcolm X said of the slave: “When the master was sick the slave would say “we sick boss?” Why would these people vote in this manner and obviously against there own self interest?
The question should be why did these people not vote for Obama? Race maybe? Surely not policy differences, unless that is you identify with the slave role in the relationship. In which case you can then say yes your are sick.

Of course they’re not indifferent to politics. That’s my point. They OWN the political system and bend it therefore to suit their own needs. So why would they be indifferent to it?

In Social Security, waste? No. None. Probably the best run program ever. Medicaid? It’s a disaster but largely the result of lack of a universal single-payer health care system. Only such a system removes waste and works well. (And the fact that you howl in protest doesn’t make it any less true.)
Any waste in our government-administered social safety net doesn’t even amount to a millionth of the waste that is represented in the outrageous billion dollar incomes of Lloyd Blankfeins and Jamie Dimons. THAT is true waste of truly monstrous proportion.

Makes zero difference. The point is that no one who makes astronomical incomes DEPENDS on their work for their income. Their income is purely a result of moving numbers around in a computer, not on any actual work done. Their actual work put in is irrelevant.

I have to agree with you on the Medicare intent. There have been material expansions of dependency since the 70’s and of course nobody had any idea the cost would consume such a huge budget proportion.. I shouldn’t have lumped that in with SS.
As far as my comments in response to your heated suggestions about yachting and golfing and the re those making over $250K, do you really think those (other than inheritors)making that amount of dough don’t work hard? Most of those I know in that category work well over 50 hours a week….business owners I know work up to 70 or more a week..
We both know no statistics are around to compare class work hours…but I think we’d agree that what is now defined as the middle class and below generally work a standard forty hours a week…although many do work 2 jobs to make ends meet, particularly when a single parent..

I understand that. you have to take things in the simplistic way that suits your limited mental abilities. I don’t deride you for that, on the contrary, I applaud the fact that with your limited capabilities that you can not only turn on a computer but can actually type the letters to form words in a coherent manner. Expecting those words to be thoughtful, intelligent, or showing a capacity for reason is too much for you so I don’t expect it from you. I for one don’t want to silence Fox News. I just want one little change take down “FOX NEWS – Fair and Balanced” and change it to “FOX NEWS – We are Agenda Driven”. Then I would have no problem with anything they said. It’s a free country. Just don’t lie what you are Fox.
