Bromance, not Benghazi, may explain Rice’s predicament

UN Ambassador Susan Rice

UN Ambassador Susan Rice

According to U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., and a few others, harsh Republican criticism of UN Ambassador Susan Rice has been motivated by racism and sexism, not by any role she might have played regarding the attacks on our consulate in Benghazi.

The editorial board of the Washington Post recently made a similar suggestion, noting that 97 House members have taken the very rare step of sending a letter to the president opposing a possible Rice nomination to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. (The House, remember, has no constitutional role in the confirmation of Cabinet nominees.) As the Post pointed out, “more than 80 of the signatories are white males, and nearly half are from states of the former Confederacy.”

Personally, I think that explanation is far-fetched at best. There’s no evidence whatsoever that racism is involved, and making such a serious charge without evidence to support it is simply wrong.

That said, however, I can see how Clyburn and others could have come to that conclusion. There is no logical, rational explanation for the intensity of the criticism directed at Rice, who as UN ambassador had no operational responsibility for Benghazi and was only serving as an administration spokesperson on the topic. At best, she was a bit player in that tragedy. And with no logical, rational explanation available, it is only natural to turn to the illogical and irrational for an explanation. Thus, the racism charge.

Again, I think the charge is false. But racism also would help to explain why almost no Republican criticism has been directed at Clinton herself, the person who actually runs the State Department and is responsible for what happens at our embassies and consulates. As secretary, Clinton is also responsible for what Rice was told to say publicly about Benghazi. Yet it’s Rice, not Clinton, who has become the target of criticism.

In recent days, however, another possible if convoluted explanation has begun to emerge. The political attacks on Rice have been led by U.S. Sen. John McCain, who has made it no secret that he would prefer that fellow senator John Kerry be named our next secretary of State. In fact, while taking part in a press conference today, McCain jokingly referred to Kerry as “Mr. Secretary” instead of as senator. (Upon taking the microphone from McCain, a wry Kerry responded “Thank you very much, Mr. President.”)

That’s where things get interesting. If Kerry does become our next secretary of state, he would have to leave the Senate, leaving an open seat in Massachusetts. Scott Brown, recently defeated by Elizabeth Warren, would be perfectly positioned to run in a special election to replace Kerry.

scott-brown-promoted-to-colonel-in-national-guard

And Brown, it turns out, is a particular favorite of McCain. The Arizona Republican serves with Brown on the Senate Armed Services Committee and took part in ceremonies last summer when Brown, a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, was promoted to colonel. Campaigning for Brown in October, McCain said “this man is the one I want most in the United States Senate.”

In most cases, the simplest explanation is also the most accurate, but in this case there is no simple explanation for McCain’s behavior. The notion that by vilifying Rice and elevating Kerry, McCain might be trying to help Brown return to the Senate makes more sense than anything else I’ve heard, including the racism angle.

“Personally, I think that explanation is far-fetched at best“

Yet the two next paragraphs go out of the way to somehow quantify it. So we have a choice of either the Progressive ace-in-the-hole of racism, or some Machiavellian plot to derail Rice in favor of Kerry, which would then open the door for the “perfectly positioned” Brown-who just lost to Warren? Wow.

Notwithstanding the Obama administration’s abject failure in Benghazi- How about the remote possibility this woman is simply not qualified?? Guess that’s too much of stretch, isn’t it…

Frankly, I think the Republicans have it all wrong.

The focus of this investigation should be on what happen that day. Could those lives been saved? And then who did what in a cover up, if indeed there was one.

But to pull out the Ole Race Card – is nothing short of laughable by all who chose to do so, including Mr. Bookman…

This is a side show. Fact is 4 Americans are dead: two diplomats and two former SEALS. Doherty and Woods were told to stand down twice. Help was DENIED by the White House, not once, not twice but three times.

Additional security had been requested back in August by Ambassador Stevens. The Tripoli Embassy was frantically calling Washington for help 4pm EST the night of the attack. Not to mention plenty of support close by:

The security officer (who was on the roof of the annex and had a laser on the target that was firing at them) REPEATEDLY requested back-up support from a Specter gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights. The fighting at the CIA annex went on for more than four hours — enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Two separate Tier One Special operations forces were told to wait, among them Delta Force operators.

The interesting thing is the Specter. It’s the perfect plane for this sort of thing — it loiters slowly over a target. It’s heavily armored (for a plane). It’s got huge guns for obliterating ground target. The SO was aiming a laser on a ground target, painting it for a plane to see. To drop a bomb, to attack with very heavy machine guns. But the laser itself is nothing, absolutely harmless. So he sat up there on the roof, risking his life to paint a target with laser light, and no one bothered to send anything to hit that target.

We know from multiple other sources that the first reaction of the Military would be to move in. We know that the White House was monitoring the attack in the Situation Room. We know that a “stand-down” order was given, not once, but twice. We know that assistance was requested and denied three times.

I am glad you are able to see past it being Fox News. Truth be told I do not care for them either however BB has a lot of integrity IMO. At this point in time it really doesn’t matter who it comes from, right? 4 Americans are dead – we had the means, the resources ready to go to assist them – to get them out. Instead they watched and denied support. And the administration blamed a “You Tube” video for more than a week (and kept this charade up even after Ansar al-Sharia claimed responsibility 2 hours AFTER the attack began; side note – the man who made the video is now in prison). And no one in this administration is planning on willfully cooperating with the congressional inquiry into Benghazi. Wonder why? What is there to hide?

Lets see whose signature is or is not on the CBA. That’s the only piece of paper that really matters.

McCain is being term limited out of his powerful chairmanship and about the best he could hope for would be chairman of a committee that deals with Native Americans, so McCain is trying to appear relevant.

Everyone knows he’s irrelevant and destined to become even more irrelevant, so he’s getting facetime stirring up a nonissue — trying to blow it into something “relevant.”

In reality, McCain is destroying his legacy and making a partisan fool out of himself.

Schumer(God help me to enlist his ideas)thinks that rich means incomes over1,000,000 (NYC and SanFran-I guess) History repeats itself . If the Repubs agree to a marginal tax hike on the above 250,000 crowd and present rational entitlement cuts( Ex. increase age of medicare with means testing and defense cut) the prez will cave unless he wants an increase in unemployment. How’s he and the rest of the bunch-all of them- gonna look if they don’t cont. to control the # of tax-payers paying the alternative minimum tax. Legacy?-NOT a pretty scenario..
Oh yea,but Obama won, the election is over, time todeal, wake up everyone, The repubs are presenting their side, the president can claim HE didn’t come up with the entitlement cuts, but would have to go along to get the increased taxes on the RICH. Yeah, he’s not. Wake up call. Guess what 46.5%? Your Bush tax credits are expiring next month!!! That means you’re going to owe taxes (wait, whats that?!). Not to mention severe penalties for non-compliance of nationalized healthcare, a new massive set of tax hikes beginning January ’13, a $1.2 Trillion sequestration and we need to raise the debt ceiling, again! This equals dwindling jobs, less disposable income for those with work and even more government assistance. And your hand outs will end; especially when China comes calling. So ……………….. what was it when “I left a woman behind” Ted Kennedy and “I’m a former Klansman” Robert Byrd voted against the first “Rice” ????

Secretary Hillary Clinton is the real target of the neo-con Republicans… The neo-cons are attempting to set up Ambassador Rice now, so they can connect her to Hillary if and when she run for President in 2016.. The rebel Republicans intend to use the Benghazi attacks against Hillary over the next four years to take her out with a thousand cuts…

0311/8541/5811/1811/1801 – this is a mere sideshow – a deflection to stop from asking the harder questions, just like petraeus . Truth will come out eventually. Oh and when you look at Rice’s track record she is not qualified for the position she holds and certainly is not qualified for a promotion to Secretary of State and that’s before we get to Benghazi.

But, he cares. Hahahahaha!!!!! What a joke.

Corbin, I see Luckovich is buying into the notion that basic social services that civilized countries provide to their citizens are mere gifts.

That’s kind of sad, really.

The Republican Party’s days are numbered. The Congressmen are like mountain fighters that can hide in caves or gerrymander around a southern state and get elected in evaporating pools of voters. As for Brown in Mass. I am not sure the Democrats don’t rise to that occasion and defend their territory. Brown is the exact ego the Senate doesn’t need to entertain anymore. Rice will be approved above and beyond the minority interest of the senate. It is actually poor form in some parts of the country to vote against a candidate just because she is black.

Tom Price is hardly a “mountain fighter”. I would say he’s more of a comic book character called “I Object man” except that would be a misuse of man.

Winning a presidential election and adding seats to congress doesn’t seem to carry much weight anymore. Modern republicans are the worst political losers in our nations history.
Give the president and the dems their due, then move on to fight another day. That will not be a problem because the republican brand stinks to high heaven…

Back to that first linked article, from Jay’s post:

When asked about Rice on CNN’s Starting Point on Tuesday, Clyburn said that words like “lazy” and “incompetent,” which have been used to describe black members of the administration, including Rice and President Obama himself, are reminiscent of language used to undermine minorities in decades past.

“You know, these are code words,” Clyburn said. “We heard them during the campaign. During this recent campaign, we heard Senator Sununu calling our president lazy, incompetent—these kinds of terms that those of us, especially those of us who were grown and raised in the South, we would hear these little words and phrases all of our lives, and we’d get insulted by them.”

Anyone really have a problem with that particular sentiment? I don’t. I think it’s a perfectly reasonable assertion–now, whether it’s the primary motivator behind this stupid bit of Senate gamesmanship on the part of Gramps McCain and crew, I don’t claim to know.

I think he’s pointing out that the GOP is.

Perhaps, but if so that’s a whole lot more subtle than his target audience is likely to suss out at first glance.

It’d be a lot like if he were to depict a “welfare queen” with in a Lexus SUV with spinny-rimz, buying lobster at Whole Foods with “food stamps”.

We’d get the joke, but most seeing it, wouldn’t.

If there were some actual cause and effect related to Rice’s comments there might be a story here. There’s not, so there’s not. This is all about John McCain, the Massachusetts Man Cake, and his other sugar pie, the still in the closet Lindsay Graham. John and Lindsay must missing Scott in the Senate cloak room. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

off topic, but it’s about the GOP, so it’s somewhat related …

I see from the GOP’s counter offer that they’re including CPI-adjustment that will result in 800 skadzillion in savings …

does anyone have any details on this? I’ve tried using Almighty Google to find details, but no one seems to have anything

“evaporating pools of voters”,”I object man,”republican brand stinks to high heaven” are examples of why the left wing of the dem party are not taken seriously in the WH. As soon as the repubs present a viable entitlement cut, the President will toss the hyperbole back to Chris Matthews, sign the bills and move onto his legacy. AND the country will be better off for it.
as for Begahzi, a few more months and the accurate events will be published-I’m optimistic. Back to Clyburn , for a racist everything is racial…….
