Bromance, not Benghazi, may explain Rice’s predicament

UN Ambassador Susan Rice

UN Ambassador Susan Rice

According to U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., and a few others, harsh Republican criticism of UN Ambassador Susan Rice has been motivated by racism and sexism, not by any role she might have played regarding the attacks on our consulate in Benghazi.

The editorial board of the Washington Post recently made a similar suggestion, noting that 97 House members have taken the very rare step of sending a letter to the president opposing a possible Rice nomination to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. (The House, remember, has no constitutional role in the confirmation of Cabinet nominees.) As the Post pointed out, “more than 80 of the signatories are white males, and nearly half are from states of the former Confederacy.”

Personally, I think that explanation is far-fetched at best. There’s no evidence whatsoever that racism is involved, and making such a serious charge without evidence to support it is simply wrong.

That said, however, I can see how Clyburn and others could have come to that conclusion. There is no logical, rational explanation for the intensity of the criticism directed at Rice, who as UN ambassador had no operational responsibility for Benghazi and was only serving as an administration spokesperson on the topic. At best, she was a bit player in that tragedy. And with no logical, rational explanation available, it is only natural to turn to the illogical and irrational for an explanation. Thus, the racism charge.

Again, I think the charge is false. But racism also would help to explain why almost no Republican criticism has been directed at Clinton herself, the person who actually runs the State Department and is responsible for what happens at our embassies and consulates. As secretary, Clinton is also responsible for what Rice was told to say publicly about Benghazi. Yet it’s Rice, not Clinton, who has become the target of criticism.

In recent days, however, another possible if convoluted explanation has begun to emerge. The political attacks on Rice have been led by U.S. Sen. John McCain, who has made it no secret that he would prefer that fellow senator John Kerry be named our next secretary of State. In fact, while taking part in a press conference today, McCain jokingly referred to Kerry as “Mr. Secretary” instead of as senator. (Upon taking the microphone from McCain, a wry Kerry responded “Thank you very much, Mr. President.”)

That’s where things get interesting. If Kerry does become our next secretary of state, he would have to leave the Senate, leaving an open seat in Massachusetts. Scott Brown, recently defeated by Elizabeth Warren, would be perfectly positioned to run in a special election to replace Kerry.

scott-brown-promoted-to-colonel-in-national-guard

And Brown, it turns out, is a particular favorite of McCain. The Arizona Republican serves with Brown on the Senate Armed Services Committee and took part in ceremonies last summer when Brown, a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, was promoted to colonel. Campaigning for Brown in October, McCain said “this man is the one I want most in the United States Senate.”

In most cases, the simplest explanation is also the most accurate, but in this case there is no simple explanation for McCain’s behavior. The notion that by vilifying Rice and elevating Kerry, McCain might be trying to help Brown return to the Senate makes more sense than anything else I’ve heard, including the racism angle.

She has a husband and two children. But seriously and honestly, I posed that question to my wife. Not that it matters to me really, but the way she carries herself kinda comes off that way based on my experiences. With a daughter who is a female athlete and just growingup in general, I have had a bit of exposure to girls who tend to be a bit tomboyish. It does make you wonder a bit, just because.

She repeated the talking points given to her by the CIA.

Why not identify the CIA person(s) that prepared the talking points?

BINGO! You want Ms. Rice as Sec of State? Then you better point out the person in the CIA who gave her bogus talking points. Otherwise, it is Ms. Rice that has to take the fall. SOMEBODY in this administration lied to the U.S. and the World on behalf of the Obama administration in order to deflect Benghazi till after the election. It even APPEARS like a failure of the CIA/Armed forces to come to the aid of the consulate when they had a chance.

The Obama administration can talk, or Ms. Rice can see the world from the axle side of a bus. Without resolution, she cannot become Sec of State.

A kind-of-similar situation occured in the Iran-Contra. Either Reagan knew or he didn’t. If he didn’t, he was incompetent. If he did, he was guilty. In the end, Oliver North took the fall.

Either Obama knows what happened or he doesn’t. If he doesn’t, he is incompetent. If he does, he is guilty of lying to the American people. In the end, Ms. Rice will take the fall.

Reagan’s “Welfare Queen” FOUND!

Good news everyone, after more than thirty years of searching by the news media, Ronald Reagan’s infamous “Welfare Queen” has finally been found. She lives in Bentonville, Arkansas.

[...]

Wal-Mart is the largest private employer and brought in more revenue in 2011 than any other company in the nation. Wal-Mart pocketed a not-too-shabby $16.4 billion in profits that same year and the six Wal-Mart heirs, the Walton family, own roughly $100 billion in wealth, which is more than 40% of Americans combined.

[...]

Because of the “everyday low wages” that the retail giant pays its employees, our government has to step in and provide public assistance to Wal-Mart workers just so they can survive…which is why the Wal-Mart workforce represents the largest recipient of federal aid in the nation.

A Wal-Mart worker makes on average 31% less than a worker for any other large retailer, and requires 39% more in public assistance.

A recent study by UC Berkeley found that Wal-Mart’s low wages are costing the state of California alone $86 million a year to provide public assistance like food stamps and healthcare to the retailer’s 44,000 low-wage employees in the state. The state spends nearly $2,000 every single year on each Wal-Mart employee who can’t afford basic essentials like housing, food, and healthcare with their Wal-Mart paycheck.

In total, it’s estimated that Walmart stores loot more than $2.6 billion every single year from the federal government in the form of tax-payer funded public assistance to their employees. That includes more than one billion in healthcare costs associated with Medicaid, and $225 million in free or reduced-price lunches for school children of Wal-Mart employees.

JOSEF:
Ya might consider the opinion of a fellow lefty blogger (of Jewish ancestry)

Susan Rice’s Imperial Credentials

(snipped)
Washington Post contributor Dana Milbank headlined “Susan Rice’s tarnished resume,” saying:

She’s “ill-equipped to be the nation’s top diplomat.” It’s for reasons unrelated to Libya. She “managed to make an impressive array of enemies – on Capitol Hill, in Foggy Bottom and abroad.”
Compared to John Kerry, she’s “a most undiplomatic diplomat.” Milbank doubts enough votes exist to confirm her. “Colleagues talk of shouting matches and insults.”
She’s an equal opportunity offender. She doesn’t care who she insults. Perhaps her chickens are coming home to roost.
Moscow complained that with her at State, relations with Washington would be “more difficult.” They’re strained enough now.

t. l. time — “SOMEBODY in this administration lied to the U.S. and the World on behalf of the Obama administration in order to deflect Benghazi till after the election.”

Do you have evidence of this, or is it merely your supposition that that is the case here?

“A kind-of-similar situation occured in the Iran-Contra. Either Reagan knew or he didn’t. If he didn’t, he was incompetent. If he did, he was guilty. In the end, Oliver North took the fall.”

Ridiculuous. Iran-Contra took place over the course of months, whereas conservatives are hanging their hat on Benghazi due to the inability to have instantaneous, precise and accurate data of the situation on the ground. Congressional conservatives *still* don’t have that, yet don’t seem to have a problem making unsupported assertions of the type you just did.

Shattering myths, Jewish voters in the last election cared far more about the economy and healthcare than policies toward Israel, according to a poll released by the pro-Israel organization J Street.

Conducted by Gerstein Bocian Agne Strategies on Nov. 6, the poll shatters the conventional wisdom that favorable policies toward Israel win Jewish votes.

Advertisements criticizing President Obama on Israel backfired with Jewish voters and more often solidified support for the president, the poll found.

Among the 45 percent of American Jews who saw television ads or mail that criticized Obama on his policies toward Israel, 40 percent said they made no difference, 38 percent said the ads made them more likely to support Obama, and only 23 percent said the ads made them more likely to support Mitt Romney.

The poll found that 73 percent of American Jews agree with President Obama’s policies concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict, up from 71 percent in 2010.

Another Republican fable goes down in flames…

“Because of the “everyday low wages” that the retail giant pays its employees, our government has to step in and provide public assistance to Wal-Mart workers just so they can survive…which is why the Wal-Mart workforce represents the largest recipient of federal aid in the nation.”

That’s a dumbmass argument. Their employees are the largest recipient of federal aid because they happen to be the largest or almost the largest employer in the U.S. More employees means more people eligible for benefits- especially new employees who haven’t yet qualified for benefits. You don’t think Wendys or Burger King or Target have people receiving federal aid. Geez.

“A Wal-Mart worker makes on average 31% less than a worker for any other large retailer, and requires 39% more in public assistance.”

A study from Cal-Berkley is as worthless as Kamspam.
The article doesn’t say where this study includes the names of these other large retailers? If you include higher end retailers such as Nordstroms that would be true. But around here starting wages at Target. Kroger, and other retailers are comparable to Walmart.

As for requiring more public assistance that also sounds like total BS to me. Unlike most of the folks on here I’ve seen the Walmart health insurance plan several times including very recently. Its not bad and is significantly better than what fast food restaurants and many other retail chains or companies provide which is absolutely nothing. But I don’t see the whiners crying about low wages at fast food, landscaping, or any number of unskilled jobs throughout the U.S. Another dumbmass point.

“A recent study by UC Berkeley found that Wal-Mart’s low wages are costing the state of California alone $86 million a year to provide public assistance like food stamps and healthcare to the retailer’s 44,000 low-wage employees in the state. The state spends nearly $2,000 every single year on each Wal-Mart employee who can’t afford basic essentials like housing, food, and healthcare with their Wal-Mart paycheck.”

And how much does the study show that Walmart paid into state coffers through various taxes and through the taxes of its employees? Oh. The study doesn’t show that??? No surprise there.

What a ridiculous point about the state paying to subsidize Walmart employees. They would be paying those costs most likely whether the employee worked at Walmart, was unemployed, or worked at any one of any other lower skilled or entry level jobs available. What kind of an idiot can’t see through that crap?

“In total, it’s estimated that Walmart stores loot more than $2.6 billion every single year from the federal government in the form of tax-payer funded public assistance to their employees. That includes more than one billion in healthcare costs associated with Medicaid, and $225 million in free or reduced-price lunches for school children of Wal-Mart employees.”

Bullspit. And how much does Walmart pay back into the system via taxes??? Oh. That’s right. The article doesn’t show that.

One billion dollars associated with Medicaid costs? Um. You might want to do your research on that instead of believing this Cal Berkley crappola.

Not Walmart’s fault. They offer health insurance at $48 every pay period-every 2 weeks. The major hospitalization deductible is $1700 which is substantially lower than the $2500 to $5000 deductible that most of my regular customers opt for. Copays are reasonable. One of my Walmart customers sees his specialist for a $14 copay vs what is usually a $50 or $60 specialist copay with individual plans. They could have and pay for good benefits if they want to. They just don’t want to if the state is going to offer them free shyte. Again. What manner of a fool can’t see through this crap?

Blowing away that piece of crap article was easier than the Bama O-line knocking down Jarvis Jones.

“If the government didn’t step in to provide health insurance, then Walmart stores would be a breeding ground for infectious diseases since their employees can’t afford to see a doctor on their own.”

Walmart does provide health insurance dum dum. Which makes this trash article a L I E !

“If the government didn’t step in to provide school-lunch assistance, then parents who work at Wal-Mart may have less money to put gas in their car and may not even make it in to work.”

Bullspit. Walmart is an entry level job for most people. If you’re 40 years old and the best you can do in life is working as a cashier at Walmart then the problem is not Walmart. Its you.

“How can a business succeed with a sickly, tired, tardy, or altogether absent workforce? It can’t.”

Aw geez. More of the emotionalism parade crap from the kook left. Apparently this paragraph contradicts the point of the article which is that Walmart is doing very well financially. The crap that kooks think is credible. Too funny.

We must accept that fact that Arab/Muslims will continue to find a way to attack and kill Americans no matter who of what administration says what when.

Who would have a hard time accepting that when Americans find a way to attack and kill more Americans than Muslims or any other groups combined? I’d caution against trying to lump Arabs with Muslims as there are significant numbers of Christian Arabs and even Jewish Arabs. Those two groups are not easily interchangable.

Personally, I think that explanation is far-fetched at best. There’s no evidence whatsoever that racism is involved, and making such a serious charge without evidence to support it is simply wrong unless you have a (D) behind your name.

KRYSTAL

“It would make anyone wonder,”

It would? Anyone? Quite frankly, I’m as qu*er as a three-dollar bill and the thought had never crossed my mind.

“ just if they saw effeminate mannerisms in a man, as in if he walks with a certain sway, sits or speaks a certain way or whatever”

Effeminate mannerisms? Do you mean nelly, a sissy or what? A certain sway? Sits or speaks a certain way? What way would that be? I mean to just what degree are we talking about here? And whatever? Now, that one really does set the mind to wondering.

“Just as it made me wonder from a VERY YOUNG AGE about a cousin of mine…”

At a very young age? So your obsession goes back to early childhood?

“who has always been a very primped person in his speak, presentation and all.”

What is “primped” and especially what is “…and all?”

“Even though he has a pretty deep voice it just didn’t square with the way he carried himself – inconsistent with from my male heterosexual family members…”

Gay men aren’t supposed to have deep voices? Damn, I guess I must have missed that one, deep bass that mine is.

“Of course as I got older my mother told me that yes, he is gay and always has been.”

But, of course…

“Do I love him any less? No. It just is what it is. That’s all I’m saying.”

What is “it” that this “just” is. And, no, that’s not ALL you’re saying.

You have just gone off on what you might as well have called screaming queens and have said that Sec. Rice is a bull d*ke…

Seriously, mate, why would you wonder anyway? Do you have a mental checklist that you pull out? How often? When? Where? Why? What if you find yourself exhibiting one of those behaviors, etc.? Do you “correct” ? I mean you wouldn’t want anybody thinking you’re, well, you know…

It’s just weird the way I see it…

Anyone who wants to judge Rice on Benghazi is misguided or their motives are bad. She’s simply not in that issue.
I once supported McCain for President of the United States (not in 2008), but, given his public comments over the last 10 months, it appears his soul has been bargained away. This being the case, the Kerry / Brown angle looks plausble.

Yeah, because there have been just so MANY Democrats attcking Ms. Rice. I just don’t know how she stands up to it on top of all the Republicans attacking her too.

Here’s a clue for you: READ THE DAMN PIECE before you show your stupidity with your off-target comments.

Jay,

Clearly she and the WH and CIA and STATE and FBI (when you look at all those involved in writing…it’s almost like saying..no wonder this was handled so poorly) did a sophomoric job in the aftermath of this attack..

The thing that folks like Jay forget is the date…..September 11…this fact has been easily overlooked in the liberals quick defense of all things BO..the idea that those “protests” across the ME were due to a video that had be released in some fashion months prior..

Anyhow, water under the bridge..she is a Rhodes Scholar and will probably refrain from pre-mature comments of such incidents in the future…I think it’s better to project her as our representative than the not-very-well liked Kerry..

“Democrats are masters at throwing the race card”

As a middle aged white male from the south, I can attest to the existence of racism among elected officials. Because of my demographic, people assume I agree with them and freely lace their private opinions with racist dogma. I am not saying this is playing a role in the Rice situation, but wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

On the other hand, I haven’t been very impressed with her (what I’ve seen) It would be nice to have a discussion on the merits of her resume.

Keep: I had homeowners tell me that could do the job for cheaper than I could even get all the materials for the job. I always told them to give me his number and when the job was done, if they were satisfied I could find that guy all the work he ever wanted. Somehow those numbers never materialized………. kinda like the problem you helped me out with. Although I was the THIRD guy to do the job (and the first to do it correctly) everyone else did it faster and cheaper. No sht eh? Wonder why THAT was……..

John McCain’s lawn: it’s dried up, bitter, and he wants you off it

December 3rd, 2012

Steve Benen reminds us that John McCain is the ultimate hypocrite:
As a top official in the Bush/Cheney administration, Condoleezza Rice said wildly untrue things about Iraq to the American people. Soon after, she received bipartisan support to become Secretary of State.
As a top official in the Obama/Biden administration, Susan Rice said entirely credible things about Benghazi based on the collective judgment of the intelligence community. Soon after, Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham launched a smear campaign against Rice to prevent her from becoming Secretary of State.
