‘Overtaxed’ Americans a politically useful myth

Earlier this week, an analysis by The New York Times confirmed once more a conclusion posted repeatedly on this blog:

Contrary to the popular image of Americans as overtaxed to within an inch of our economic lives, citizens of this country in almost every economic group pay a significantly smaller share of their income in taxes — state, local and federal — than they did 30 years ago.

The sole exception:

“Lower-income households, however, saved little or nothing. Many pay no federal income taxes, but they do pay a range of other levies, like federal payroll taxes, state sales taxes and local property taxes. Only about half of taxpaying households with incomes below $25,000 paid less in 2010.”

nyttaxes

(An interactive and much more extensive version of the chart above is available here.)

Any honest analysis of our current financial situation must account for this basic, fundamental fact. By comparison with other major industrial countries, and by comparison with our own history, we are undertaxed not overtaxed. Politicians buy votes just as easily by promising endless and repeated tax cuts as by promising new spending programs, and after some three decades of such policies, we are shocked to find ourselves increasingly in debt?

Yea, well the people clamoring for a tax increase aren’t exactly asking for tax increases on themselves either, are they? I think we should just jump off this fiscal cliff together and everybody actually shares in the pain a little instead of this “screw the other guy” mentality we’re approaching this with. There is no more “we” in this country.

The declining tax burden on the bottom half of income earners is reflected in the increased progressivity of the tax code since Reagan. In 1980, the top 1% paid 19% of federal income taxes. In 2009, they paid 36.7%. The top 5% went from paying 36.8% of the tax pie to 58.6%. The bottom 50% (mainly those near the 50% mark) paid 7% of all income taxes in 1980. Now they are responsible for just 2.25%.

restoring tax cuts to those over $250,000 is just a minimal start to ending the asinine reign of King Grover and his rich sponsors. A few additional revenue boosters to end the deficit:
1. tax vulture capitalists who bankrupt companies and fire the workers or steqal their pensions at 75%
2. Tax companies that offshore operations and outsource at double the corporate rate on American Income.
3. Investors who invest in offshore tax havens to avoid taxes should pay triple the capital gains rate with jail time if they do not report the income.
4.Eliminate all diplomatic relations and aide to any country that supports abusive tax shelters for Americans and American Companies.
5. Tax at 75% all corporate bonuses to executives of companies that do not provide
minimal levels of benefits for their workers here or overseas.
6. close most of the 800 US military bases particularly in companies whose GDP is greater than ours . WW II is over. Over a hundred bases in Europe alone. Close all military golf courses.
7. Eliminate all tax credits except for retraining and social security.

The golf course closing comment is stupid. Remove that and add removing health insurance for the Congress as well as their health club. How much do they cost us? Let them join the rest of us on healthcare and workouts. Just how much do both programs cost? Heard the health club budgets are hidden in 10-20 different bills and budgets…make it one line item! Raise the rates on the 2%, and in the unlikely event they actually create jobs, give that amount back in deductions or rebates. More jobs adds to the tax base thus offsetting the rebates and resulting in a net increase… if the jobs are real jobs.

Don’t think I would raise taxes on those making between 250K and 500K. Start a new bracket for those over 500K and tax income over that amount at 40 per cent.

That would raise some additional revenue without hurting the economy.

And put a cap on deductions/loopholes. For one thing, we don’t need to subsidize million dollar houses.

How do we know any real cuts will be realized? Many of the revenue increases proposed have already been offset by more spending commitments…

Not a puzzle that can be solved by all or nothing Keynes or supply side theory…I think the idea of taxing stock trades per Nader has some merit to consider….would reduce the speculation in markets and incentivize traditional long term investments..

Like VAT? Seems that the rising number of those not eligible to pay taxes or otherwise get tax credits would see this as a tax…lets’ say it’s 5% on 50K salary…$2500 annually..that group would go nuts and BO would never agree on ideologic basis IMO…

VAT is a regressive tax and would not be accepted, so is a sales tax. Unless it only applies to luxary items or items above a certain price range.

Agree with those that say defense should be cut.

Don’t like cuts straight across the board. Some programs are more necessary and valuable than others. For instance, border protrol budget should be increased, not cut. We need someone to make decisions about what should or should not be cut.

I can’t remember if it was Nader that I read it from, but when the derivatives market crashed, someone brought that up as a way to recoup losses from TARP and other stuff. One of the downsides that was brought up was the potential additional tax on the average person’s retirement because of trades made in pension funds or 401k funds. I think it would be an idea worth investigating.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore blogger wanted on a court-issued warrant surrendered without incident to authorities late Saturday after broadcasting on Internet radio his negotiations with police who had surrounded his home.

Police said 47-year-old Frank James MacArthur emerged late Saturday evening. He had remained inside his home when law-enforcement officers sought at around 6 p.m. to serve a warrant issued in June for a probation violation stemming from a 2009 gun case. Authorities said MacArthur had missed a court hearing.

There is a point of diminishing returns. Not much good research on exactly where it is or how it works.

Don’t think a four per cent raise on incomes over 500K would create diminishing returns.

I can remember the fifties. Top bracket was 90 per cent. It enourages a lot of giving to charities and other ways to avoid tax. But if the top brackets starts high enough would not be counter productive. Say above 20 million per year.

“BTW Congress is considering getting rid of the one dollar bill”

Again. The last time they tried it, it was an resounding flop. And it will be again, if they actually go through with it.

cruz is right.

The change to the dollar is “chump change” that does nothing.

The mint has millions of metal dollars that no onewill take off their hands.
Drop the paper dollar and they will be used and the metal dollars last much
longer. Also may issue metal 2 dollar coin. Canada has done this. 1 dollar
coin is the loon and 2 dollar coin is the toon. great sense of humor.

silver dollars at them.

“Drop the paper dollar and they will be used and the metal dollars last much longer”

Yep, that’s what they said the last time. The reason “The mint has millions of metal dollars” is BECAUSE “no onewill take off their hands”

They weren’t liked, and weren’t used, the last time. They won’t be again. People just DON’T LIKE THEM.

True. I’d suggest that you make it rain at The Cheetah instead of Magic City then. :)

“Last time they didn’t discontinue the paper dollars”

And they won’t this time. Because the same reasons exist for not doing away with it. Just as a small example, EVERY vending machine in the country that takes dollars would have to have their coin handling machinery completely changed.

They should make a perforated dollar bill so those cheapskate cons can ask for change when they tip the strippers.

Machine vendors are pushing the dollar coin like before.
also in consideration dropping penny, nickle, dime.

Okay, y’all are late on the news. The $1 bill has been replaced, effective immediately. In order to comply with the new law, as the new Dollar Bill Czar, I am collecting the old bills. Send your old dollar bills to me immediately. And don’t forget to include the $12.95 processing and handling fee. I’ll ship your new $1 bill coins in 10-12 weeks
