For Republicans, some daunting numbers
You can lead an elephant to water but ...
Some numbers:
– Thirty-three U.S. Senate seats were up for grabs in the 2012 election. Democrats won 25 of those 33 seats.
– Mitt Romney is going to the White House today to have lunch, not to check out his new crib. And the main reason he will have to dine and dash is because American women rejected both his candidacy and his party, voting for Barack Obama by a margin of 55-44 percent. The gender differential in most down-ticket races was even larger.
– The Republican-run U.S. House has 19 major committees. Next year, it appears that all 19 will be chaired by white males.
– The current Republican House caucus includes 24 women. Next year, that number will drop to 19.
– In the last three presidential election cycles, Americans under 30 voted Democratic by an average of 60 percent. And lest Republicans try to comfort themselves with the argument that it’s nothing new, that young voters always vote Democratic, it simply is not true. In the previous eight election cycles, an average of just 46.5 percent of young people had voted for the Democrat.
What does it mean? Generally speaking, younger voters who cast repeated ballots for a particular party tend to form a lasting affiliation with that party.
– On Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner reiterated his caucus’s strong opposition to raising taxes on the wealthy. Also on Wednesday, a new Washington Post poll was released reporting that just 37 percent of Americans agree with the position that Boehner and others have made the central focus of their party’s economic identity.
As longtime conservative Bruce Bartlett puts it in his much-cited piece for The American Conservative:
“At least a few conservatives now recognize that Republicans suffer for epistemic closure. They were genuinely shocked at Romney’s loss because they ignored every poll not produced by a right-wing pollster such as Rasmussen or approved by right-wing pundits such as the perpetually wrong Dick Morris. Living in the Fox News cocoon, most Republicans had no clue that they were losing or that their ideas were both stupid and politically unpopular.
I am disinclined to think that Republicans are yet ready for a serious questioning of their philosophy or strategy. They comfort themselves with the fact that they held the House (due to gerrymandering) and think that just improving their get-out-the-vote system and throwing a few bones to the Latino community will fix their problem. There appears to be no recognition that their defects are far, far deeper and will require serious introspection and rethinking of how Republicans can win going forward. The alternative is permanent loss of the White House and probably the Senate as well, which means they can only temporarily block Democratic initiatives and never advance their own.”
Political power ebbs and flows. It always has and always will. But it doesn’t just ebb and flow on its own. It fluctuates because losing parties take stock of why they’re losing and adapt to changing realities. If a political party not only refuses to adapt but makes a refusal to recognize changing realities a central part of its identity, ebb and flow can be delayed for a long, long time.

I would hope the Congressional Republicans tell Obama so what if you won reelection, if all you can propose is dinging the top 2 or 3% of income earners with a 802 billion tax increase over 10 years which is nothing but political symbolism to pleasure your base and you can’t address spending cuts along with meaningful entitlement reform than we welcome you joining us as we go over the fiscal cliff.

@ Bro, hard to know about the the crowd you are referring to,;typically the Dems are viewed as BIG govt. so it makes sense for those that depend on Govt to vote Dem. The defense contractors may be a different kettle of fish, I know someone in that industry and frankly this administration has put in so many regs they have a tough time. Please note i did not say that the $ is not there, it is such a hassel to write the contracts, comply with regs., etc.
personally I think this adminisration flew by the seat of it’s collective economic pants, but it DID fly. We’re not Spain or Greece or France (real trouble there). Game changing now have to work together, he hasn’t shown much of an ability to do that ( see AHCA), we’ll see, HOPE springs eternal on a beautiful November day.

Yeah, TD, I’m stupid. I don’t get how being an American citizen who, like the vast majority of citizens of civilized nations in the lower third or so of the earning scale, who happens to enjoy some government provided services, is a “leech.”
I’m so freaking stupid, in fact, that I don’t get how one (1) person who took a picture of some guy mooning a police vehicle constitutes multiple instances of “defecating on police cars”, as you’ve also posted.
I’m also so bewilderingly idiotic that I actually wonder if that one (1) woman who was captured on video that one (1) time carrying on a bit about car & mortgage payments is terribly representative of the actual reasons most Obama supporters carried with them into the voting booth.

Dems definitley have the ability to better market their position to the masses. “We have a problem but we are are going to make someone else pay for fixing it”. I read the lib portrayal of how “Republicans want to cut taxes for the wealthy” when they are actually saying we should leave tax rates the same for everyone. I believe everyone understands that raising taxes on that small group will not solve our country’s problems so what is the true Dem plan beyond that? I think the majority of Americans should be fearful of the loose Dem definitions of “wealthy” and “fair share” because someone who thinks they are solidly middle class today may find themselves defined as “wealthy” tomorrow and that they too somehow don’t pay their “fair share”. When we, as a country, decide that we have a common problem and a majority and targets a minority to bear the brunt to solve the problem we are in trouble. If taxes need to go up they should go up for everyone (not that I want to pay more in taxes) but hopefully the Dems will someday realize the simple fact that you can’t tax yourself to prosperity and that sometimes you have to put your credit card away.

Far from “strangling” the economy with “crushing” taxes on “job creators”, Eisenhower was able to report: “In four years we have achieved the highest economic level with the most widely shared benefits that the world has ever seen. We of the Republican Party have fostered this prosperity and are dedicated to its expansion and to the preservation of the climate in which it has thrived.”
When it was all said and done, America got a new Interstate Highway System, stayed in the Space Race, and fought the Cold War against Communism with those taxes – AND NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON COMPARED EISENHOWER TO MARX, LENIN OR HITLER.

The conservatives have lowered tax rates and increased military spending and that is where most of our problems lie. We only have to fine tune the safety net programs, but the problems is an agenda since the 1980s to STARVE GOVERNMENT. Who benefited? The rich. Remember the Robber Baron era from your high school history classes? We got away from that via progressive taxation and a strong middle class by the 1950s. We prospered. We also prospered when Clinton raised tax rates briefly.
