Down in Tampa, prosecutors today gave their opening arguments in the trial of DeeDee Moore, accused of murdering Abraham Shakespeare. Her alleged motive?
Shakespeare, a barely literate man with a long record of petty crime, “got lucky” and won $17 million in the Florida lottery. According to police, Moore then finagled her way into Shakespeare’s life, got him to sign away what was left of his winnings, killed him and then buried him in her backyard beneath a concrete slab.
So … have you bought your Powerball tickets yet? I’m told the jackpot is now up to $550 million.
Somebody, somewhere, is likely to have a life-altering experience tonight at 10:59 EST. A lot of their troubles — problems at work, a boss they hate, worries about paying the bills — will disappear, only to be replaced by a whole ‘nother set of problems that in most cases they are much less equipped to handle.
Friendships will be broken. Families may be rent asunder. Simple lives will become much, much more complex. As Sandra Hayes, whose share of a 2006 Powerball winner came to a measly $6 million, told Fox:
“I had to adapt to this new life. I had to endure the greed and the need that people have, trying to get you to release your money to them. That caused a lot of emotional pain. These are people who you’ve loved deep down, and they’re turning into vampires trying to suck the life out of me.”
So … bought your tickets yet? Time’s running short.

“it died there only to be resurrected on this blog by you guys, congratulation-proud of yourselves?”
Well if it was that bad, then why the heck were you living there? By the early 90’s it was downright fashionable again by my recollection. I’ve been in Atlanta, or near it, all of my life, so I’m well aware of its history and its changes over the years. There’s plenty of bad to be found just about everywhere, depending on one’s definition of it.
Goodnight all, and thanks for the laughs. Don’t take the jokes and jabs too seriously- sometimes it’s just good for the soul to find some humor in the world. It gets darn depressing enough without always looking for it.

You’ve been on here long enough, one thing I learned from the 2010 midterm shellacking was to keep my cards close to the vest, I did not believe that could happen. Couple of weeks before this past election some of the cons on here were talking some rude smack about how obama was toast. I don’t believe that anybody hate the wealthy per se, but they hate the way they try to avoid paying a fair share. You have to ask yourself, if you are rich, how much is enough? Anyway, this country gave them the tools for their opportunity, so pay it back. They really won’t miss it.

There is something to be said about earning your money instead of winning it, though I suspect most money has more to do with luck than earning. In Texas a man runs a broken down farm only to find oil. He then educated his children to become lawyers for his estate. The next kids go to Harvard make friends end up in Wall Street where they occupy a job getting buckets of water out of the Mississippi River.
Occasionally a man invents a car, or a light bulb, but most wealth is being at the right place at the right time. The lottery is a bit like America, or maybe America is a bit like the lottery. If you can learn to be happy no matter the winds of fortune, this new fortune might not ruin your life. Find a family that really loves you, stay with them for life, be proud of our character not your self importance, but now I am talking silly.

@GT, not silly at all, except the luck part. of course that does happen along with family ties (genetics?). I suuspect you’d be really surprised how many hours venture capitalists put in, etc. That is their choice, not mine. But, don’t belittle that most wealthy people get AND stay there with hard work (shirt sleaves to short sleaves in 3 generations), really hard work. It’s their life, you don’t see them at their kids games, Arthur Blank used to go to his sons b-ball games and work his blackberry, never putting an eye on the game. Personally, I think that is a little pathetic, but who am I?.. Back to work

GH, I’ve done that once or twice in the past, same kind of feelings about the whole thing as you.
Yesterday I happened upon a story of some office poolers who had worked at some phone-support center, who hit it big, and they were clearly the exception to the rule. They all apparently have done everything right–first off, they didn’t quit their jobs, they all went back to work because that’s what they did, after all, and they stayed there for a coupla years until the business shut its doors. And secondly, they all kept in close touch with each other and formed a kind of support group to help with financial management questions.
It probably didn’t hurt that (from the sound of it) they were mostly women. Men — I hate to say this, but it’s true — seem to have more of a problem working within a supportive community, there’s some stupid wiring in us that makes us get all obsessive about who gets to play Alpha Dog at a given moment.

Alex one of the few things I am disappointed in Obama about is his light hand with Wall Street. We have created a system too big to fail that is as corrupt as any strip joint or gin joint in this country. There is talent in this country, but we won’t find it praising failure. The world, not just the United States is in a recession because of the incompetence of Wall Street. Why in this time and day do we even need a place call Wall Street? Where there is great earning there should be great losses, and the people responsible for these losses should not be allowed to remain. Like the Mississippi River there is good and then there are the floods. We see where it floods and we fit it not reward it.

I’m not sure what plain ol’ objectivity has to do with how valid an idea might be.
However, for the record, Mrs. Alan Greenspan is probably as respectable a TV journalist/host as there is out there.
And Rachel, even if you disagree with her, tends to be very circumspect in her on-air speculation. She doesn’t toss stuff out there that she isn’t prepared to back up, and she’ll show her work, unlike those other two jackasses from the right you mentioned.
And last night, she actually *apologized* for using the word “stupid,” to describe the case-against the Goopers are making for Susan Rice. That’s how rarely she resorts to such base language.

Hostess Brands Inc. plans to ask for a judge’s approval Thursday to give its top executives bonuses totaling up to $1.8 million as part of its wind-down plans.
