No, Speaker Boehner. Some things have no pricetag

images-25

From Politico:

—————–

“President Barack Obama made a demand of House Speaker John Boehner near the end of their first White House meeting on the fiscal cliff: Raise the debt limit before year’s end.

Boehner responded: ‘There is a price for everything.’”

—————–

There is a price for everything. How lovely.

I’ll tell you what the price OUGHT to be: $223,500. That’s how much Boehner is paid each year by the taxpayers of this country to do his job. And as Boehner knows as well as anyone, a basic part of that job is ensuring that the government does not default on its debt.

Let’s be clear: Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize so much as a penny more in spending. It merely allows the Treasury to borrow the money to pay the bills that previous Congresses and presidents have already incurred. If Boehner can’t or won’t handle that basic responsibility, he needs to resign.

This is really amazing if you think about it. In the 18 times that the debt ceiling had to be raised under Ronald Reagan, did it ever once cross Speaker Tip O’Neill’s mind to tell the president that, well, “There is a price for everything”?

On one of the seven occasions in which the debt ceiling had to be raised under President Eisenhower, did Speaker Sam Rayburn ever sidle up and say “Ike, you know, there is a price for everything”?

No. It was unthinkable. Rayburn, O’Neill and other speakers were horse-traders at heart, but they were also patriots who understood that some things just aren’t negotiable commodities, and the full faith and credit of the United States is one of them. Even Newt Gingrich balked at playing that card. And why?

Because in effect, Boehner and his fellow House Republicans are threatening to do great damage to this country if their “price” is not paid. They’re trying to shake down the president of the United States, using the welfare of the country as their hostage.

“Splendid little country you have here. It would be a tragedy if anything were to happen to it.”

It’s no better than a husband trying to win an argument with his wife by threatening to do harm to one of their kids. “Leverage,” Boehner calls it. It’s despicable, and Obama ought to call his bluff.

The House GOP leadership and caucus members should be on trial for treason.

When they played brinksmanship last year with the debt ceiling that eventually ended up creating the sequestration problem we have today, they were effectively saying to creditors of the United States we may or may not pay our debts. If we don’t get our way then we won’t raise the debt ceiling.

That raises some interesting points. First they are not worthy of leadership. Second, this is how children on a school ground behave, not adults. Third, the GOP is so big in talking about the “moocher” society. They were big supports of reforming personal bankruptcy laws under GWB (of course not touching business bankruptcies – they can continue with bankruptcies of choice to screw their creditors, suppliers and non-executive employees) chastising the individual debtors as irresponsible. They were doing the exact same thing when playing with the debt ceiling.

As a result the credit rating of the U.S. government was lowered for the first time in history. This means it costs us more to borrow money than it did before they played these games.

And as Jay and many have pointed out, raising the debt ceiling has nothing to do with allowing more spending. It has to do with borrowing enough money to pay our EXISTING debts. If you want to hold spending down then have that debate in the context of spending and taxation but not around the debt ceiling.

I guess Orange Man didn’t understand the outcome of the election. Obama was re-elected by a significant electoral majority and a 4 point majority in the popular vote (more than Bush won in 2004 when he claimed to have “political capital”). The Democrats increased their majority in the Senate and increased their seats in the House by ejecting Tea Baggers.

If your financial expenditures are such that you must borrow money in order to meet all of those expenditures you’re heading down the road toward a debt crises. If you think about it the entire system is entirely upside-down.

When you have credit – a credit card, a line of credit, etc. the amount of debt you can incur is fixed by the lender and known. If you attempt to exceed that limit you are either denied or are subject to over limit penalties.

I’m not an accountant but shouldn’t each spending bill passed be subject to tracking against our current “credit limit”? If so then the action of Congress and the President to spend should automatically raise the debt ceiling (since we define our own credit limit).

It seems like the system is disjointed. Congress/President spend and only after they have already spent we consider whether to take the necessary actions to pay our debts. Obviously one factor here is the issue of revenues. If revenues rise then any increase in the debt ceiling may not be needed.

Keep Up the Good Fight!

No matter what the whine from some of our children, its not a debt crisis. We have the ability to address it and we need to before it becomes a crisis. Is this right? Thought debt ceiling didn’t have to be increased until April? If that is the case, getting it done “early” would probably involve a horse trade.

Also, the debt ceiling limit is not to allow borrowing for ‘past’ Congresses and Presidents, it is to allow borrowing for PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE. When you hit the ceiling (as we did in summer of 2011 before everyone abdicated responsibility and kicked the can down the road), you cannot borrow additional amounts (to fund the $3-4 billion the Fed Govt goes in debt EVERY SINGLE DAY).

Without playing hardball on the issue, how is anyone ever going to do anything about it? If the debt ceiling didn’t get raised, the country would eventually HAVE TO RUN A BALANCED BUDGET as it would have zero ability to borrow additional amounts. Not necessarily a bad thing…

Please make sure to include all the facts, they are quite helpful.

So let’s guess what the President said….”John, before we start negotiating on this, let’s raise the debt limit?” Only an idiot would say yes (well, a liberal/Progressive as well).

Again why is it a left issue as you implied and not a left and right issue? (you avoid Republican administrations because it doesn’t fit your narrative that it is a left wing issue, but that is fine and expected)

Are you aware that Ryan’s budget had the debt going well on past 20 Trillion and for his numbers to even be close the unemployment rate would have had to been lower than what is deemed full employment? His numbers, not the left, Obama’s or anyone else’s.

I have stated my ideas: Phased in tax increases back to the Clinton years. Revamping of the EITC as well as cuts to every department.

Doubt it will get done because each side will dig in their heals, but to put it all on one side or the other is being disingenuous to say the least.

If the debt ceiling didn’t get raised, the country would eventually HAVE TO RUN A BALANCED BUDGET as it would have zero ability to borrow additional amounts. Not necessarily a bad thing…

Sure its a great idea  When a super storm knocks out an entire region of the country, before you send out the troops and FEMA for assistance, we have to talk budget cuts, right?

Pea, you can blame them all, but the republicans these days break the system the way I see it. it happens daily, they are as childish as the day is long. Past republican presidents were never treated the way president Obama has been treated.

truth.

Nice deflection. So you DO admit you can’t explain anything you parrot. You have NOTHING of intelligence to offer to the conversation, just FOXBOT soundbites. When asked to explain them, you call names.

If Jya were as small a man as little Kyle, you would be banned lol. Thankfully, he’s not. I love to have you here showing people how intellectually bereft the Republican party has become.

Carry on my Semper Fi. Show us how faithful you are. Show us how much you support and defend our Constitution. Continue to show us how little you care about truth and honor………

THAT’S what I’m talking about!

The cons secret recipe for success!

It worked so well this time around, they are going to run with it all the way until the next election!

And when did I say that I didn’t? Calling Obama a mediocre President and saying Pelosi and Reed shouldn’t be the leaders are not exactly a ringing endorsement.

In terms of knowing I give Recon more credit than that. In terms of being intellectually honest in terms of this issue (because he does know it is and has been a two sided problem), I do not give him much credit at all.

The debt ceiling is calculated based on the THEN existing debt obligations as well as those likely to arise because of spending already passed but not expected to be covered by revenues.

So this is not raising the debt ceiling to allow Congress and the President to pass new spending legislation. It is to cover the bills that are already due and those that are likely to come due within a defined period of time in the future. It is at best a guess based on what the expected revenues will be.

Please don’t characterize this as “pre-authorization” to prospectively spend beyond income. That it is not.
