That was a lovely picture. I think of the ones, isolated, poor, berfit of friends, the floatsam and jetsam of society. They are in need of a friendly greeting, an acknowledgement that they are worthy of being part of humankind.

One of my daughters flew to Denver to her in-laws. Was 69 there yesterday.
Hope it doesn’t come a snowstorm between now and Sunday.
Flying has become a holiday ritual.
Good news, she will spend Christmas was us here.

Well, I don’t reckon she took one of the Cumming area and Simpsons Trailer Park. It would be nice to see home from the air.

Anyhow, it won’t be long till the trailer is filled with the smell of roasting turkey and beer. I hope everybody, even the libruls, have a Happy Thanksgiving and I can’t hardly wait to hear the sound of weird music tomorrow evening.

Many of our old traditions are fading away …………. this is just one:

I miss the traditional Wednesday evening “prayer service” before Thanksgiving Day.

In the small North Georgia communities I grew up in years ago, it was often a joint meeting that rotated each year between the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches including black & white congregations.

We all met together and it was a genuine time of heartfelt thanks to God that set our hearts right for the next day.

I like a late Thanksgiving dinner, so the bird just went into the roaster. 90 minutes to go! (and for those who missed my post yesterday, not it’s not a turkey…since it’s just me this year, I’m doing a “mini” dinner and roasting a Cornish hen)

Have been repeating the mantra: Every day, in every way, I am getting better & better.
Anybody know the source of that?

Gmare,

The application of his mantra-like conscious autosuggestion, “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better” (French: Tous les jours à tous points de vue je vais de mieux en mieux) is called Couéism or the Coué method.[3] The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of this particular expression according to a specified ritual, in a given physical state, and in the absence of any sort of allied mental imagery, at the beginning and at the end of each day.[citation needed] Unlike a common held belief that a strong conscious will constitutes the best path to success, Coué maintained that curing some of our troubles requires a change in our unconscious thought, which can only be achieved by using our imagination. Although stressing that he was not primarily a healer but one who taught others to heal themselves, Coué claimed to have effected organic changes through autosuggestion.[3]

Mick – 8:45 – finally went to see Canterbury Cathedral last year – was completely enraged when I heard about all the beautiful woodwork, stained glass and artifacts that the Puritans destroyed. Plus, even in the small parish churches all over the country, beautiful carvings of the saints were defaced (quite literally) by the people who thought that the Anglican church was still too Catholic for their liking.

so, the whole myth of “religious freedom” is just that. a myth.

Okay, class, it’s time for a history lesson.

Freedom of, and from, religion was first established in what became the United States of America, in 1665 with the promulgation of Locke’s Carolina Charter and its provision of “equal rights of citizenship for Jews, Heathens and Dissenters.” Carolina was an early success. Jews came in such numbers that by the first census one of each six counted was Jewish. The contribution of the Jews to that success was such that when Oglethorpe set up his colony in Georgia, he requested of the London Sephardic rabbis a list of Jews who would come to build the scientific, legal and commercial infrastructure for his thieves. Boats two and three to Savannah brought these immigrants. The first male of European descent to be born in Georgia was Philip Minis, born into a Spanish (Ladino) speaking Jewish family and who would, himself, go on to be a Revolutionary War hero. His Mama, Abigail, died at a ripe old age, the richest woman in North America and who, interestingly, left it all to her daughters, making the point that her sons could make their own way.

Also taking advantage of the Locke provision for religious liberty were the French Huguenots and their contributions to the development of Charleston and South Carolina was such that early on the city became a center of refined culture and hearty commerce. The Heathen element made its profound contribution as well, but that is another lesson for another time.

And Oglethorpes thieves?

“Gaza is no Warsaw Ghetto

Pointing out that the suffering endured by Gazans is not comparable in scope to the Holocaust or other well-known genocides, does not diminish it. However, it is crucial to provide accurate historical context to the current conflict, for two reasons.

Firstly, the use of highly charged historical comparisons that do not hold up to scrutiny unnecessarily weakens the Palestinian case against the occupation.

In a propaganda war in which Palestinians have always struggled to compete, handing Israel’s supporters the gift of inaccurate or exaggerated comparisons does not help this struggle, particularly not in Israel and the US, the two most important battlegrounds in this conflict.”

“We must tell our children. But more than that, we must teach them. Because remembrance without resolve is a hollow gesture. Awareness without action changes nothing. In this sense, “never again” is a challenge to us all — to pause and to look within.

“Never again” is a challenge to reject hatred in all of its forms — including anti-Semitism, which has no place in a civilized world.

“Never again” is a challenge to defend the fundamental right of free people and free nations to exist in peace and security — and that includes the State of Israel.

“Never again” is a challenge to societies. We’re joined today by communities who’ve made it your mission to prevent mass atrocities in our time.

And finally, “never again” is a challenge to nations. It’s a bitter truth — too often, the world has failed to prevent the killing of innocents on a massive scale. And we are haunted by the atrocities that we did not stop and the lives we did not save.”

If the sentence that had had had had had had the meaning would have been quite different.

Ah, the importance of punctuation!
:-)

There’s a great Spanish tale called “The Importance of Punctuation.” A swain is courting three sisters. Their papa orders him to make his intentions known. So he sends a letter, without punctuation, and tells them to punctuate it and they’ll know. Each of the three punctuates it in such a way that it’s clear its she and not her sisters. Papa demands that the gentleman caller clear the matter up. He does. With his punctuation it’s none of the three…

I always get urked when someone parodying the Southern dialects uses the grammar wrong. Things like using be with the third person in a situation where no Southern speaker would ever do it (it’s the subjunctive, dammit, and go check Shakespeare and the King James version of the Bible to learn how! :-) ) and misuse of what’s called the “to be coppola” It’s an African thing and found in a number of other languages as well (Russian, Hungarian and Hebrew being examples). And don’t get me started on pronunciation,. Bred and bread are NOT pronounced the same, the first has no “drawl,” the second does…that’s why we write it with two vowels, dad gum it…

The actress said she was born in Kentucky, but spent a great part of her life in Kansas. So did Ken Burns want a Kentucky accent, a Kansas accent…or some combination of both. Which is why SHE makes money as a voiceover actress and I don’t!

That is the glorious beauty of the Mother English…we have the largest vocabulary of any language and words incorporated from every corner of the Blue Planet..and when we come across something new, we have the freedom to come up with a word for it…and I love how different dialects will relate to that new thing in their creation of a word for it…

And, no, I haven’t seen the Blind Side, but I have always admired Bullock for the way she uses her native dialect…and Cissy Spacek is my cultural and linguistic heroine…any time that location of her character is not specified and/or germane, she uses her native North Texas accent and speech patterns. She had to put up a fight for that when she was doing her role in “Missing.” The director, a Greek, backed her…and it was, to me, one of the most effective elements and, while never made a point of, she and Jack Lemmon were able to use to advance the subtleties of the conflict between them…

That Yorkshire connection would be correct, but it is more the Scots and Scots Irish English immigration patterns of the Southern Appalachians…down on the Coast, there’s more of the London-Southern (England) influence…in the case of the Appalachian there has been a strong influence from Cherokee, in the case of the coastal, the influence has been more African. The middle South has had influence from the Creek, Choctaw-Chickasaw and the Niger Basin dialects. Once you get over to the lower Mississippi Valley, the influences are French, both the Parisian and the Breton, along with the Choctaw-Chickasaw and Congolese. You can really get a “feel” from this latter in watching “Swamp People” and listening to the Houma…

Are Republicans beginning to throw Norquist under the bus?

Nothing riles up the tea party chattering class like a broken pledge against raising taxes.

Just ask Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a veteran Georgia Republican who this week turned his back on the Taxpayer Protection Pledge he signed years ago as a rite of passage in right-wing politics.

[...]

“I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge,” said Chambliss, who faces re-election for a third Senate term in 2014.

Referring to Norquist, who has vowed to oppose candidates who break the pledge, Chambliss said that “if we do it his way, then we’ll continue in debt, and I just have a disagreement with him about that.”

“Saxby Chambliss wrote a commitment to the voters of Georgia. He got elected and re-elected making that commitment,” Norquist said. “He’s never promised me anything.”

[...]

If the senator wants to “change his mind and become a tax increaser,” Norquist said, “he needs to have that conversation with the people of Georgia.”

And we will gladly have that conversation without the input of that punk-ass Norquist.

Why do 24/7 convenience stores have locks on the doors?

One reason is to trap shoplifters in the building while a call goes out to the local authorities. It’s pretty cool if you’ve never seen the way the security cameras interact with the lock system.

Another would be for the clerk to use the facilities, but I’ll stipulate that makes 24/7 false advertising.

I’m watching the end of a football game between Grambling and Southern U. All the players on both teams look to be black.

I wonder why NBC is showing this game as though it’s perectly OK for everyone to be black?

I wonder if NBC would show a game between two teams where everyone is white?

I wonder why, after over 40 years of civil rights legislation, this double standard still exists.

I wonder why the black community doesn’t seem to understand how this is damaging any possible civil rights progress?

I wonder if they even care?

I wonder how our political leaders became so gutless that they don’t dare say a word about this?

Vast majority of other positions are manned by blacks. Most, many explain this as blacks are faster and bigger..watching fla vsfsu, 22 players on the filed: 20 are black. There is no double standard. Southern U. and Grambling U. offers scholarships and is open to any students who apply. You live in some tutti fruitti lala land if you think this society has achieved full integration. There have been White football players in the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference), and there are many White students at SWAC Universities.

As a proud graduate from a SWAC school, I’m offering you a free chill pill, bro. You might wanna read up on things before you go blabbering off and putting your ignorance on full display.

I wonder why, after over 40 years of civil rights legislation, this double standard still exists.

I wonder why the black community doesn’t seem to understand how this is damaging any possible civil rights progress?

What would you say if you knew that all a White student had to do was fill out an application to one of those schools and they automatically got a full paid scholarship? You don’t know the first damn thing about HBCU’s, and it’s quite obvious from that crap you just posted.

HBCU’s offer a chance for Blacks to go to college that many of your “White” universities wouldn’t even give an application to. As I said earlier, go educate yourself first. After that, then go back and read what you posted and see how dumb it makes you look.

Funny the things you may notice. A few years ago there was a complaint making the rounds about how few Black faces there were on television. So, just out of curiosity, I ran my own survey. I went channel surfing, a split second on each of the channels on my cable subscription. Surprise! After several such run throughs at different times, the average came out to 62%. No way would I have put it that high as “hypothesis” and it doesn’t take into consideration what the programming was (ads, news, sit coms, movies, whether or not the programming was a mixed cast, etc.) just, did I see a Black face…

On the field and in the stands, almost EVERYONE was black. This is a double standard, regarless of your denial.

Do you not know what the hell Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) mean? Why don’t you go and research the history behind those two schools that had almost all Blacks on the field and in the stands.

Southern A&M Univeristy: The concept of Southern University was put forth by P. B. S. Pinchback, T. T. Allain, Henry Demas, and as an institution “for the education of persons of color” at the 1879 Louisiana State Constitutional Convention. In April 1880, the Louisiana General Assembly chartered Southern University, originally located in New Orleans. Southern opened its doors on March 7, 1881 with twelve students. One of the original locations of the early campus was the former Israel Sinai Temple on Calliope Street, between St. Charles and Camp streets in New Orleans. Southern became a land grant school in 1890, and an Agricultural and Mechanical department was established.

—————

Grambling University: Grambling State was founded in 1901 and accredited in 1949. The school became Grambling College in 1946 named after a white sawmill owner, P. G. Grambling, who donated a parcel of land for the school to be constructed. With the addition of graduate departments, Grambling gained university status in 1974. Grambling State University emerged from the desire of African-American farmers in rural north Louisiana who wanted to educate other African Americans in the northern part of the state. In 1896, the North Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association was formed to organize and operate a school. After opening a small school west of what is now the town of Grambling, the Association requested assistance from Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Charles P. Adams, sent to aid the group in organizing an industrial school, became its founder and first president.

Major civil rights legislation was passed in the 60’s, over FORTY FIVE years ago. That’s more than HALF a lifetime. How much longer do you propose we keep this double standard?

What part of HISTORICAL do you not understand? Alabama State University, my alma mater, was founded in 1867. Are you advocating shutting down Harvard U., Georgia Tech, or the University of Georgia simply because of laws passed in the 1960’s? Why should HBCU’s be shut down but not other schools. Do you realize how R-A-C-I-S-T that comes across? Many of these schools were founded at the end of the Civil War and during Reconstruction.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historically_black_colleges_of_the_United_States

I think you do protest too much and your reply is tinged with bitterness and racism.

There is no bitterness or racism in my responses. I’m only disappointed in the fact that you don’t have a friggin’ clue about the history of your country. If America had welcomed freed slaves with open arms and no preconditions, there would be no HBCU’s today. If America actually fully integrated it’s society, there would be no need today for HBCU’s, other than preserving the history that’s already there.

Why don’t you go look up the demographics of Tennessee State University. You’re so focused on the football field and the stands that you don’t seem to understand that college is all about classrooms too. You talk about something you “saw” on tv. I lived that life, and what you “saw” don’t amount to a droplet of water in the Pacific Ocean.

Had a bad weekend Brosephus, man you are always a bit touchy, but speaking of chill pills you need 2.

No bad weekend here bro. Simply educating the uneducated as to the nature of HBCU’s. Instead of a-s-s-u-m-i-n-g how things are on campus, one would think it’s much easier to simply ask someone who’s gone to school there. Then again, that would require a White person to actually befriend a Black who graduated from a HBCU, wouldn’t it?

As to integration rates, as I stated, it’s all based on locale. At my school, we were all one. The city of Montgomery made it that way as it was a matter of ASU students vs the city. Only recently have White students there not been ostracized by the residents of Montgomery simply for attending that school.

In addition, I belong to the Prince Hall Affiliated Masonic order. As the namesake was one of the first Black Masons in America, that particular order has been labeled as the “Black Masons” by most people. In fact, there are numerous non-Blacks who are quite prominent in the organization. You will also find there are Blacks who belong to “White” fraternal groups as well as Whites who belong to “Black” fraternal groups. If you don’t associate with, or seek to find these things, they are just as foreign as trying to speak Mandarin Chinese.

2010 graduation rates for major conferences. The one thing that never gets addressed is the number of athletes who leave school early to go pro in sports. As for Black Masons or White Masons, in the immortal words of Kamchak”

In the immortal words of Brosephus… Educate yourself just a bit more in order to sound like you know what you’re talking about…

I have been a Prince Hall Mason since 1992. If you study the history of Masonry, one has to be officially chartered by a Grand Lodge in order to be considered a valid lodge. Prince Hall Masonry was founded by a charter issued by the Grand Lodge of England, the same Grand Lodge that chartered other lodges here in the US to which people, such as George Washington, were members.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Hall_Freemasonry

Relationship with predominantly white Freemasonry

This led to a tradition of separate, predominantly African American jurisdictions in North America, which are known collectively as Prince Hall Freemasonry. Widespread racism and segregation in North America made it impossible for African Americans to join many mainstream lodges, and many mainstream Grand Lodges in North America refused to recognize as legitimate the Prince Hall Lodges and Prince Hall Masons in their territory.

For many years both Prince Hall and “mainstream” Grand Lodges have had integrated membership,[citation needed] though in some Southern states this has been policy but not practice. Today, some Prince Hall Grand Lodges are recognized by the Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) as well as the great majority of state Grand Lodges in the US and many international Grand Lodges. The situation is complicated by the level of recognition that is granted, with some lodges giving full “blanket” recognition to all Prince Hall Grand Lodges, while others put on limits with regard to issues such as “intervisitation rights” or treating the Prince Hall Grand Lodges as regular but foreign jurisdictions.[5] While no Grand Lodge of any kind is universally recognized, at present, Prince Hall Masonry is recognized by some UGLE-recognized Grand Lodges and not by others, but appears to be working its way toward further recognition.[6] According to data compiled in 2008, 41 out of the 51 mainstream US Grand Lodges recognize Prince Hall Grand Lodges. The mainstream state Grand Lodges that do not recognize Prince Hall Grand Lodges are located largely in southern states with an estimated 50% of Prince Hall Freemasons:[7] Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina and West Virginia.[8]

Guess it’s time for me to call it a night. One thing to consider about all this segregation related stuff is that, we are a product of our past. This country didn’t fully integrate in the 1960’s, and it’s still not 100% integrated today. Most groups are too afraid to give up their self-identity, and that’s one thing that would likely have to happen for us to completely integrate ourselves. Unlike most other countries, we are not made up of one homogenous group. We are far too diverse.

It sounds good on paper and in speeches, but I don’t foresee the US ever having a completely integrated society. As a result, there will be Black and White Greek Letter organizations, HBCUs, and a host of other organizations and groups that cater to specific groups. Instead of focusing on the failed logic that these groups are “racist”, we should applaud ourselves that our free markets work in that groups are formed and thriving that meet the needs of specific people. That’s what the free market is supposed to do.

Michael Tomasky on How John McCain Humiliated Himself on Susan Rice

November 25th, 2012
5:55 am

A new report appears to exonerate Susan Rice for public statements following the Benghazi attack. Will John McCain apologize for his reckless crusade against her? Don’t bet on it.
We don’t yet really know as a society what a person has to do to completely and utterly cancel out a record of war heroism, but we may be about to find out. If this CBS News report is even close to accurate, John McCain’s arguments of the last few weeks about Susan Rice are thrashingly demolished. He has, or should have, zero credibility now on this issue. It will be fascinating to see if he emerges from the holiday weekend subtly chastened, attempting to shift gears a bit, or whether he keeps the pedal to the paranoid metal. He’s getting toward the sunset of what was once a reasonably distinguished career, a career (if we count his time in Vietnam) that began in the highest honor and has now descended into the darkest farce.
The CBS report found the following. It was the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that took the words “al Qaeda” and “terrorism” out of Rice’s talking points for those Sept. 16 talk shows. It found also that both the CIA and the FBI approved of these edits, following standard operating procedure. The report states emphatically: “The White House or State Department did not make those changes.” One source told the network’s Margaret Brennan that the controversy over the word choice employed by Rice has come to the intel world as “a bit of a surprise.” Another source said that there were “legitimate intelligence and legal issues to consider, as is almost always the case when explaining classified assessments publicly.”
There’s one bit of irony introduced to the saga by all these details, which is that this report crystallizes the fact that Rice did indeed hide some information from the public on Sept. 16—but it’s the kind of information that has always been concealed from public consumption, for the kinds of national-security-related reasons that the Washington establishment has always agreed upon. Historically, of course, if any person or persons have objected to this kind of filtering, they’ve typically been on the left. Think Daniel Ellsberg first and foremost. The right always defended this practice, on the grounds that making possibly sensitive information public too soon without the proper running of all the intelligence traps could only provide aid and comfort to the commies or the terrorists, as the case may be.

Indigo – Racial matters have improved a lot since the fifties. That’s about as long as I can remember. There is no legal segregation.
But there are still different cultures between the races.
It’s mitigated somewhat by the intergration that does exist in some public schools and in the workplace. Also the Army and government.
And there is some mixture in housing, proceeding slowly.
Mixed births will continue to spread the genes around so that differences in DBA will be reduced so we will look more alike.

In some areas of the world, DNA has mixed, but the different cultures remain, based on religion and customs.
The DNA among Israel, West Bank and Gaza is probaly about the same. And the DNA of the Sunnis and other forms of Islam are similar. But the differences remain.

Well, so much for ever having a “colorblind” society.

When you live in a country where people love to express their individualism, you’re not going to have the atmosphere necessary for complete integration into a “colorblind” society. We are quite territorial people. Our territorialism and tribalistic instincts are what makes America what it is. Most every other country in the world is made up of homogenous ethnic, tribal, or racial groups. We are not. Our country is truly a melting pot of the world’s groups The same barriers and differences that exist in the rest of the world won’t magically disappear simply because of the fact that people reside within our borders.

I think the idea of a “colorblind” society is a great idea. I just don’t think we will see it happen in reality.

Race is, at best, an artificial construct. Just what is it that makes a “race” to begin with? Oh, we accept the broad anthropological divisions of Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid, and Australoid. We argue incessantly into which of these the latest archaeological specimen of the earliest humanoids fall, each still locked into their own “we were first” mentality of trying to determine themselves somehow “superior” by laying geographic claim to some half simian cache of bones.

Just how artificial it can be even in more recent and recorded history can be seen from such things as Article 14 of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek when, by the stroke of a pen some 6000 households went from “Indian” to “White.” A little over a century later, several million persons in the United States went from “White” to the newly created “Hispanic” overnight.

It is how we as individuals and specific “communities” relate and interact within these artificially, often enough self, imposed, which is at issue. We, as a society, are still mired in the concept of “color” as the determining factor, a holdover to a great degree from the segregation era with its 19th Century determinations as a legal construct.

As individuals we are moving beyond that. As communities and as a society, we are not.

Oscar

Race is scientifically artificial, as there are no scientific guidelines that can tell one race from another. Individual difference within races are greater that the average differences between races.

But somehow, if you were in Sweden, and suddenly were drugged and woke up in Kenya, Viet Nam or Columbia, I think you would notice that the people looked different. Hence, the common sense concept of race.

Somehow, the people in South DeKalb don’t look the same as those in Forsyth County. Can’t put my finger on it, but there seems to be some difference.

You may want to do whatever it takes to avoid watching Tennessee State Univ football then… As a HBCU, their band is the traditional “show band” comprised mostly of Blacks. Their cheerleaders are usually Black, and the crowd at the football games (technically attending the game as most come for the halftime show) are mostly Black. However, TSU is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, and has a sizeable minority, i.e. White, population because of it’s graduate programs, engineering school, and other opportunities that are provided there.

Just my opinion, but in regards to football on Saturday’s, there is no “us and them” mentality. People are simply choosing to attend the games they want to. College football and “Black College Football” are similar but not one and the same. People attend the Alabama vs Auburn game to watch a good football game. Piggybacking on what you just posted. One of the “hot button” topics at the Thanksgiving get together was the Elizabeth Warren fracas and the “look like a” thingie. The great niece in Oklahoma who has begun her Choctaw language and culture classes would “pass” as “high white” in any line-up. The grandbabby the same age, classically “Indian” in appearance, is being raised in an environment where the Indianess is something with which she has had little or no personal contact.

So, which one is a “real” Indian and which one isn’t? The “white” one would be right at home on the rez, the “red” one would be completely alienated. Yet, they are the same family.

So, no, it’s not a construct defined by “color,” just judging from one little laboratory.

That “territoriality” concept is certainly a valid one, but its definition can be tricky. That territory can be confined to the home or can encompass massive land expanses. Even at its most limited, the home, it can also be at work, Here is our house there exists a “corner” where the Indian totems, icons, etc. are in evidence and another where the Jewish ones on on display. Even in our “mixed” household, there is a point where we retreat into a tribal thing. For all of our 40 years as a unit, there is that time and place when and where the division is there. Certainly. That’s why I say it’s “based” on territoriality…not that it IS territoriality. To an amoeba a “territory” can be just barely beyond the boundaries of it’s shape. To a human it can be, as you say, a massive land expanse.

But xenophobia, which is what we are really talking about, is based on protecting the territory from those who are “outside” the group. In this context, “territory” is not neccessarily based on land. It can be a mindset, a societal habit, a culture. It’s all about protecting those in one group from those in another.

Needless to say, it was not pretty. The average global temps increased, ocean levels continued to rise, droughts and floods became more and more commom and famine and starvation increased considerably. Finally, by 2080, populations were moving en masse from one border to another just to find food and water. Naturally, this caused large gun battles and countless deaths. Govts. crumbled and, essentially, it became an every man for himself situation.

Even though this was a worst case scenario, it is not out of the realm of possibility.

All we can do is just take one day at a time and be thankful this awful apocalypse has yet to happen.

Well for Indigo, when the going gets tough, the tough apparently give up. At the immediate individual level, try replacing 5 of your most frequently used old light bulbs with LED lights (or CFC lights), improve home energy efficiency.

On a larger scale, stand up to the stupidity like those who claim “freedom” is lost when standards like light bulbs are improved. Tell the politicians climate change matters and to address it. If more stand up and say the storms, the droughts, the changes must be addressed, it will be. Demand that corporations be responsible and when they aren’t, shop elsewhere.

Speaking of Sandy, climate change, doing something and things like that…

Following Katrina, the press and blogosphere were full of “don’t rebuild, but put them someplace else, dumb-asses.” You don’t see a lot of folks making the same suggestion about NYC and NJ. Instead, you see a lot of “do something NOW” for future protection. It’s where we put our focus and priorities, and who is it bellyaching.

Now that the effects of climate change and failure to take care of a problem before it becomes critical has reached the national hearth, it will be addressed. I fear, though, it will be addressed in a limited, “slap a bandaid on it” fashion instead of a comprehensive plan.

And, maybe it’s just me in Lalaland…but wouldn’t this be a golden opportunity for some good old Rooseveltian state infrastructural socialism to put people back to work?

Any choice is going to be expensive. What I’m thinking is that the idea is good, but the time for it might be passed. A lot depends on the economy. As long as it’s growing, even if slowly, it’s not likely to get much support. If, however, we slide back into a recession and a depression looms, then there might be more support.

Yep, but to some extentat that’s a result of our “I want it now” society. We get less and less able to simply wait for things. This is one of the things that I’m a radical about. I think it explains our skyrocketing debt…but at the same time, I’m one who does NOT think that rising prices are a good thing.

Used to be you could save bit by bit for things, but now? If you save you’re quite likely to find that during that savings period the price has gone up on what you are saving for. So people bought on credit, which also increase the price of things if you don’t pay it off…but they got in that habit because it got harder and harder to save ahead of the increase in cost.

Not only would we need to address military installations. We import massive quantities of goods through our ports. If something happened along the West Coast that knocked out the ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach, our economy would likely suffer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ports_in_the_United_States

If you look at the busiest ports in the US, the first three are major oil ports. Long Beach is the major port where goods from Asia enters the US. The top 17 ports could be hit by major disasters by way of earthquakes or hurricanes. If we don’t have the infrastructure that’s necessary to survive and recover from major events, we doom ourselves.

yes, it would. But that’s true of any of our ports. I would posit that the bigger danger is the East Coast port…simply by the sheer number of people they service. The West Coast ports are important, the East Coast ports are crucial. And the “funny” thing is…once the new Panama Canal is completed. it could put the Gulf Coast ports at the cusp of importance in the event something big happens to either of the oceans coast ports, because it would be less expensive to ship the the Gulf Coast and then send the goods from there to the rest of the nation…then it would be to re-route goods to either set of ocean coast ports and then have to ship clear across the nation to the other coast.

I think the completion of the new and improved Panama Canal puts both the Gulf Coast and the East Coast ports much higher on the level of risk. If I remember correctly, the primary reason for widening the canal is to allow for the super cargo ships to come through from Asia and other Pacific areas. The intent is to bring the ships to the Eastern and Southeastern US without having to truck or move cargo by train from the West Coast.

Thanks for the reminder on the Panama Canal. I had completely forgotten about that.

“That thought does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling, especially when considering the cargo handling capacity for Gulf Coast ports when it comes to cargo other than petroleum products”

Sure, but that concern is operative no matter which coast ports you are talking about. Could the West Coast ports handle their own cargo loads AND the loads of the East Coast, for example? The thought I have sort of stems from the “should we rebuild New Orleans” that people like my sister spout off. Well, my answer is: yes, we should. Because we have to budget for the loss of major ports on any of the 3 coasts and we can’t afford to permanently lose any of them, if we are to have any chance of coping with the temporary loss of any them.

Doggone/GA

November 25th, 2012

“New Orleans is really the only viable port on the Gulf and it’s not capable of handling the monster ships that will be coming through the canal”

It doesn’t neccessarily have to. In the event of a disaster they could anchor off-shore and off load their cargos onto smaller ships or even barges if neccessary.. It would almost certainly still be more cost effective then shipping to either coast and trying to ship goods across country by road, rail or air.

New Orleans, in particular, has the added advantage of being able to add barges to the distribution by air, road or rail.

You make a good point as to the unloading etc…New Orleans is very much the “transhipment” port for transferring from the ocean going to the riverine and rail…I had not really thought about that “off shore” port idea…duh…

Doggone/GA

Josef – yep! And the flooding problems and all that are the fault of people who didn’t understand the importance of the natural habitat around it. If it still had it’s sand barriers and the proper swamp and wetlands that it should have, it wouldn’t be as neccessary to have such an extensive levee system. It would still need one, but it wouldn’t be as crucial…since the water would have natural places to do that it doesn’t have now.

And how in the heck is deepening the harbor supposed to affect the water supply? That’s an argument I have not even heard before.

No, and in the past they couldn’t handle the “bigger” cargo ships that are the generation before these…but they can now, and they will rebuild to handle the bigger ones of the new generation. Adapt or die, basically.

Updating the Savannah River’s capability is one of those things that the potential financial gain outweighs the environmental impact. But then, like most rivers, it’s polluted enough by the time it gets that far down that one has to wonder if it’s such a big deal.

I think Sandy has made some people sit up and take some notice, but what will it really improve? I think we’re going to have to see a couple more of those monster storms before anyone gets really serious about spending the money needed to build some protection for the area. “My four year old Great Grand Daughter, says I can make the hot chocolate though”

Hot chocolate and cookie distribution … sounds like a fantastic (and much safer) job!!

good luck with the MRI – let me know what happens … look at it this way – knee replacement surgery has come a LONG way – the people I know who have had it say the only thing they would do differently is not put it off as long as they did.

USinUK,
They tell me I won’t know the results until Thursday, but I’ll let you know. Got any good toll house cookie recipes?

HOLY COW! For a man who has a hard time deciding what color skivvies to wear (white or white), those recipe’s are a hard choice. Thanks for them. I do like that orange brownie one though…

Morning, peeps!

Happy post Turkey Day weekend!

For too long, the Republicans have predicted apocalypse, debt crisis, the loss of freedom, the overthrow of the constitution. As the economy improves, that doom-saying will seem even more out of touch than ever.

Republican political chances will depend on the Republican ability to devise a positive program to address the country’s fiscal problems in ways that improve people’s lives. It’s a new day, guys, and it demands a new game.

But in football terms, the GOP is still running the triple option. (Hugely successful in the 1950s!)
