On immigration, U.S. public leading its supposed ‘leaders’

In Georgia alone, more than 10,000 immigrants who were brought to this country illegally as children have applied for a temporary reprieve to protect them from deportation. That’s a significant number, especially when you consider that the program was only announced five months ago.

There are a couple of ways to think about numbers that large.

Those who believe that illegal immigrants are by definition criminals who pose a threat to this nation’s economic security, soveriegnty and even ethnic identity would find 10,000 an ominous number. The same would be true of the 300,000 that have applied so far nationwide. And of course, that 300,000 in turn represent just a small subset of the 12 million or so illegal immigrants now in the country.

But there’s another way to look at it as well. The 10,000 applicants from Georgia — all of them between the ages of 15 and 31 — are people who think of themselves as Americans, who have lived much of their lives in this country and who very much want to be Americans. Most speak excellent English. They are not here, as some stereotypes would have it, to live off the rest of us.

In fact, to even be eligible for the program, these children of illegal immigrants must have graduated from an American high school, have earned a GED or still be in school. And while qualifying under the federal program makes them eligible for a temporary permit to work in this country, it does not make them eligible for government benefits of any kind.

And again, some 10,000 such people have applied in Georgia alone.

I understand that many Americans who take the first point of view about illegal immigrants are unlikely to change their minds. But the question is, where does that perpective lead us? If we take that position as a country, what policy options flow from it? If we insist that those people be treated as criminals, our only options are to try to identify them and deport them by force — all 12 million of them.

As a practical matter, that simply isn’t going to happen. It would be far too expensive, far too time-consuming and far to disruptive to the communities in which those 12 million have made their home. And as a matter of morality, it shouldn’t happen. Because here’s the thing that is acknowledged too seldom in this debate:

The vast majority of those who entered this country illegally in the past 25 years were lured to make lives here under an immigration enforcement regime that was lax not by accident or incompetence, but by design. We did little to enforce our borders, and even less to patrol the workplace, because our leaders made a conscious choice that in a booming economy, we could look the other way and make good use of their labor.

We — as a nation — broke our own laws, out of our own sense of greed.  To now turn around and try to boot these people out because they are no longer convenient for us is not the act of a great nation.

And the American people understand that fact. In the wake of the election, a lot of attention has been focused on how poorly Republican candidates did among Latino voters. But the American people as a whole are also eager ready to resolve this question. In exit polling, 65 percent of all voters said that illegal immigrants ought to be given the chance to become citizens. Only 28 percent said they should be deported.

The public, in other words, is far ahead of its supposed leadership on this issue.

Kcin, you’re right. It can be both. Bush did try to show some leadership and was shot down by his own party. Obama showed some leadership by implementing by executive order portions of the Dream Act. Politics often involves timing and building. Leadership is not always obvious.

Well, we don’t have a breakout of exit polling data for Georgia, but we do on Alabama:

Jay… this is the 1st time that I have agreed with you 100%, whole-heartly, and absolutely. I also think that the government should make it just a little more easy for these people to become citizens. it’s not like they came here crawling across the border with diapers. And because they have been schooled here they already know enuff to become lawful citizens. Maybe I should back-track here abit, schools here are far below appx 17 or 19 other nations.

We don’t punish children for the actions of the parents.

When we ask them to do something and they do it, we should not later punish them for it.

There is a moral dimension to all this. An important question is, are those who so vociferously denounce ‘illegals’ have the moral courage to acknowledge our part in this? If they do, will they then temper their vitriol?

If history is any guide, I rather think not.

I may have a perspective here that many of y’all do not. Every day as part of my job, I see these people coming in to do the document chase. The blessing beyond compare is to see that little one I remember from way back when they came in making their first tenuous steps, strangers in a strange land, and now to see them as confident, educated and responsible adults but with that shy, “you probably don’t remember me, but I remember you,” Then, they share with me some personal memory from that time and, “yes! I remember you.” I have permission when asked to write for them a personal letter of recommendation to file with their applications. Of the ones who have come back, and they now number in the hundreds, there is not a one that I would not recommend as the hope of our future.

This move on Obama’s and others’ part will pay off in ways we can only benefit from. Those willing to stake their future as Americans on trust in the system to do the right thing are what America is all about. I have the rare chance to see just what it is we’re getting…and, folks, it is something magnificent…

IMO the feds can no longer enforce current immigration law as they have never really enforced it to the degree intended. I think we offer amnesty to all currently here but we must of course vet the criminals and other undesirable types out and send them, as well as all inmates in our prisons who are illegal, back to Mexico asap.

For those advocating a “bigger fence” or “securing the border”. . . you are missing where many of the undocumented actually come from.

Legal work permits!

Yes, Many foreign nationals get legal work permits, and those permits expire. Once expired, many of those same foreign nationals stay and keep working. yes, yes, they know that they should return, but the work is good here in the USA. Plus, there are programs that update those permits, however, the lag time has gotten so large that many who should actually be documented become undocumented because of our own workload.

and be sure to thank a Republican for working to reduce the funds that keep these areas staffed to keep people in the country legally.

As in “the Wall”? You don’t need a wall. If you make it impossible for illegals to work in this country, they won’t come. They come for the jobs – if you enforce our employment laws, they will stay in their home country.

For the ones already here, change the immigration laws so they can stay and legally work – IF they learn English, pass a background check, pay a fine, etc. Enforce those expired VISAs.

It is pretty simple once you get past the “Deport them all – WHAT PART OF ILLEGAL DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND???”

Of course, you can’t do anything when half your party is crying for deportation, and the other half wants the illegals for cheap labor.

Here’s my take on the immigration issue:

Too many times certain political opportunists are looking at the “brown” immigrant and screaming, “Illegal!!!” — yet they fail to see the “lighter shade of brown” ones.

There are tons of Russians, Czchecks, Greek and Chineese/Korean “illegals” in this country that are not put through the same distasteful gauntlet that the S. American and Mexican “illegal” goes through.

Its a travesty and distasteful. It’s time we lived up to the that Statue:

The statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.

Well, where does it end. Give 10,000 citizenship and another 20,000 will show up. After awhile these illegals will consider theirselfs just as good as the average stump-broke redneck that was born here. God must not of wanted these illegals to be U.S. citizens or else He would of arranged for them to be born here. So giving them citizenship goes against God too.

I know we got to be nicer to the illegals to get their vote in 2016. But let’s not start that now. I done some quick figuring and by my arithmetic we could give 2,000 GA rednecks a job hauling illegals across the border and dumping them. That’s counting about 5 people per pickup. Some GA rednecks buy the short-bed pickups and can’t haul as many—you wouldn’t want them riding in the cab—while others buy the long-beds and could haul 6 or 7.

Let’s put the redneck back in GA American. Who’s with me on this?

And on that tax return, don’t you have to list your dependents – and their SS numbers? I don’t think these illegals are changing jobs every year, so the IRS knows where they work if they don’t file. I think most file and pay their taxes just to stay under the radar. Easy to police (IF you have enough IRS staff). “illegal immigrants are by definition criminals”

If you are in America illegally you ARE breaking the law, and that is criminal. If you think it’s ok to obey some laws and ignore others, that is, or should be, incorrect thinking.

I don’t think those brought here as children should be deported. In fact, most of the illegals here, children and adults, will probably stay.

We need to immediately stop any more illegals from coming into our Country. We also need a politically independent commission to determine just which politicians looked the other way and allowed so many millions into America. Those guilty should be punished accordingly.

I’m sure the chances of this ever happening are the same as our Georgia politicians gaining a national reputation for honesty and integrity.

Jay, “we”, the people, are NOT responsible for the millions of illegals here. Big Business and their political toadies are. And, in this case, it’s both the Republicans and Democrats who are at fault. And, since there’s no one else to vote for, those of us yearning for ALL our laws to be enforced have been left with no representation.

Please distinguish between “we the people” and those greed driven moguls and politicians who got us into this mess.

Do you honestly think that 11 to 12 million people (estimated undocumented population) have swam across a river or crossed a fence to get here? You need to study immigration laws and policies before you start to rant.

Do you realize that we give tourists with visas a 6 month time period to stay in the US and that time period can be extended for up to one year? What kind of tourist needs that amount of time in one country?

Also, read the 9/11 Commission report to see what changes they advocated in regards to immigration. We have checkpoints for people entering the country, but we don’t have any concrete system monitoring departures. That was a recommendation made by that committee that still hasn’t been implimented.

Nobody wants to admit that many companies grew their profit margins from the low wages they were able to pay the “illegals” they hired for next to nothing. They had a sweet deal not having to report wages or pay for benefits. Once they got a taste of that, they surely didn’t want the government actually enforcing immigration laws. And now that they’ve proven themselves to be against anything remotely resembling citizenship for the immigrants, they suddenly find themselves having to support immigration reform to try to court votes. I hate to think that any immigrant with a modicum of sense would ever trust the conservatives.

since it takes several documents to get a drivers license these days, how are people who are here illegally able to pull it off?

It all depends. If they come here legally, they simply get the license before their entry period expires. In addition, if they’re here on a student or work visa, they can apply for and legally obtain a valid social security number. If they don’t have status, then they usually don’t have a license.

In addition, some states will issue ID’s regardless of status, but the ID’s are not valid for driving.

If you claim 10 or more deductions, expect to be audited or for the IRS to demand verification and validation.

If you can’t or won’t produce it, the IRS can and will *direct* your employer to enter a lesser number of deductions for you against your will. Plus, the IRS will *fine* your employer if they don’t comply.

well, all of those terms are fine with me (tho i don’t know what
in the hell fred’s talking about).
As josef can tell you, we would say “whatever makes you comfortable”
(well, most of us would)
Its the intent in the use of the terms that is much more important.
And this is a microcosm of the cons dismal problem with us/them
Let me illustrate –

Some douchebag poster was on here election night, & said –
“chief spreading bull won” or some childish crap like that. We would
know this was said with disrespect & ill intent and frustration of
getting his loud no-credibility ass handed to him.

This is a horrendously offensive insult.
a) you don’t talk this way to
leaders of ANY group anywhere, and in our group if you did you
would be taken out to the edge of the ‘village’ and placed facing away,
and be left there shunned forever, symbolism being ‘the only way for
you to go is away from here’
but most importantly
b) the insulter has NO right to name anyone ‘chief’
this is so haughty, arrogant, digustingly distasteful that there
are no words to describe this person at this point.

however if fred for instance said that, i would maybe giggle/blow it off
not to get into the woo-woo stuff, its whats in your heart

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if he applied for the Diversity Visa as a German, he’s likely to not get one. The whole purpose of the DV or Lottery Visa is to boost immigration numbers from countries that have very low number of legal immigrants coming to the US.

http://www.travel.state.gov/pdf/MultiYearTableVII.pdf

There are usually only 55,000 visas available per year under that program. The PDF file there shows how they have been distributed between 1995-2010. The number for Germany, as most other European countries, are very low as they usually have family or jobs that petition for them.

Yes, but living here and failing to file income tax returns IS a criminal offense.

Nope. The receipt of a specified amount of gross income generally determines
whether an income tax return must be filed. See United States v.
Middleton, 246 F.3d 825, 841 (6th Cir. 2001) (stating that the assertion
that the filing of an income tax return is “voluntary” is frivolous because
26 U.S.C. § 6012(a)(1)(A) requires that every individual who earns a
threshhold level of income must file a tax return.

Take a look at the link I posted. You won’t find Mexico on the DV list. Mexicans always have a sponsor, whether it’s a US citizen, legal resident, or employer. The only other way for them to get a green card is if they are granted asylum, and that route is not an easy route for Mexicans to take.

People think Mexicans have all kinds of advantages, but part of the reason I think they cross over illegally is because we don’t give them the same opportunities as other countries to immigrate here legally.

I’m in a helluva fix here…………on one hand I think immigration laws should be followed. On another, and this may sound like stereo-typing to some, the quote “illegals” that worked where I am employed out-worked the hell out of anything we had here previously, so your point is taken. They missed less time, learned more quickly, and busted their a$$e$. There is one who came to this country…..he had nothing and knew no English. He started at ***** (can’t name the company….may start blowing my cover) and eventually learned English. He never missed. He worked his way up and was made a shift manager. Four years ago, he was made sales manager at a great retail organization. But, for every great story like this, there are others with the drug trade, gang stuff (yeah, i know all races have gangs.) I do not agree that we should just open our borders to anybody, and I do know that it is easy to judge Arizona and places that border Mexico when you live in a state that does NOT have the same problem, since you have no frickin’ clue what these places have to deal with on a daily basis. However, lots of these cats can do and will do okay……..there has to be some way to get all this straightened out in a way that is fair but not stupid, honest but safe, etc. By the way, the guy above that I mentioned is NOT fictional…..he is one of the best managers I know and has built as much customer loyalty in four years as some do in a lifetime. We cannot just “drop-the-gates” and let everybody rush over, and I am not a proponent of that. But (Vidalia onion-harvest, for example) we now know the work ethic, and with work-ethic comes some good. Again, I sympathize with Arizona and places that have an undue burden placed on them that it is easy for outsiders (who do not have to deal with it) to judge. Have a neighborhood big chain grocery store. Saw a woman unsling one of those big binders containing checks and write out a check for a large cart of groceries. I know the cashier – asked her ‘was that a business check? ” She said ‘yup, does all her family shopping here, pays for it every time with a check from their business.”

Then just last week I was in the lounge at a car wash and the guy next to me said on his cell phone “you know, finding where to hide the money is one of the great challenges of owning your own business.”

So I’m kinda tired of hearing about “what part of illegal don’t you understand” and “we all know the SNAP program is full of fraud” and all the rest when we have a party making mantras out of that who are telling us all how small businesses are overtaxed and just average, honest, hardworking Amuricans who are all the best this country has to show.

It’s not difficult. 1.) Make it a federal felony to knowingly hire an illegal. Minimum 5 years with 85% sentence served. 2.) Make it a federal felony to falsify documentation for purposes of gaining employment. Automatic 1 year sentence with immediate deportation following sentence served. 3.) Frequent and randomized snap inspections including interviews of suspected employees. 4.) Institute a fine system for guilty individuals as well as corporate entities that is so draconian that it will all but ensure compliance. 5.) Institute a final amnesty program for illegals already here. No citizenship, only permanent resident alien status. They have to pay for and earn citizenship. 6.) Finally institute a seasonal guest worker program with non-permanent residential visas that must be renewed annually. Implement these measures and the problem will fix itself.

Another aspect of comprehensive immigration reform is the potential for a mini boom in consumption. The undocumented workers are reticent to spend their disposable income on consumer goods for fear of being deported. They would rather save their money or send it back to their families in their country of origin. Once they get their papers they will be buying their American dream just as every other immigrant wave has done.

Did you report her? If she in fact existed and was that obvious, you should have. Those who point it out and then do nothing to stop it are, in my humble opinion, as guilty as the ones doing it.

And just to keep it in perspective, when I was first given custody of my boys (nephews I’ve had since they were toddlers), I qualified for and accepted daycare assistance, medicaid, and a small amount of TANF until I gained permanent custody. As a single parent, even with a good teaching job, I couldn’t afford daycare for two kids on my own. I hated taking the assistance, but it kept us fed and them in good care while I worked, so I did it. I guess, in some folks’ definition, I would qualify as a Welfare Queen as I was receiving assistance while working. The Queen part I would qualify for…but that’s only for certain people who get to know me well…and when DDR lets me borrow the boa… ;-)

In relation to that, I cite the case of the leader of the Endek Party in Poland who was brought up for war crimes after liberation. Yeah, I know right! He really irks me too; but he’s like me and Dusty. We have this love/hate thing going. When I first started blogging, Dusty came to my defense when some cyber stalker called me out of my name — she even got him thrown off the blog.

Once, on the blog around 2 a.m. when it was just me, and about 3 other people; I mentioned that i was almost raped 3x. Since then, I have a fear of being present when there’s more than 2 men in a room, no matter if i know them or not. No matter if one of them is a relative. I have an innate distrust of men after those incidents. Scout was so kind, so understanding and so………unlike SCOUT, that was freaking amazing!!

He gave me solace that a year in therapy never gave me. So I know deep in his cold dark, shriveled up heart, there’s a smidgen of “something” in there.

it could have been that several people checked out together with multiple cards, moving items from one person’s card to another if that card was out of funds.

It’s not that it is actually illegal (until we get more evidence), but that the system can be taken advantage of.

The conundrum of the Scouts is that they could easily introduce and support legislation to strip an entire class of its citizenship but when it came down to shipping them off to concentration camps, they would do all within their personal power at the personal level to thwart it…on the other hand, there are many who parrot the anti line, but when the potential victim comes seeking shelter, would close the door…

PAULO

Okay, a funny…I was scrolling down and all I saw at first glance was “josef “you have no heart and your soul is in jeopardy the way I see it…” Before it clicked with me that was what I had said and before the rest of your post came up, my reaction was “what the hell did I do to bring that on, and especially from Paulo!” :-)

Scootter: What do you define as a welfare queen then? As I know it, it’s those who have kids on purpose so they can milk the system. Not illegal, and certainly not as prolific as some think. I’ve suspected a few here and there, but then stereotypes can be dangerous…

I’ll tell you a story of what happened to me once. I was in Wal-Mart using my TANF when I had it, and a guy behind me mumbled to his wife something about “he don’t look like he oughta be needing one of them cards…” I put my youngest down into the buggy and turned and said rather curtly, “If you took a minute to ask instead of spouting off, you’d find out that I fought for these two to get them out of a drug infested hell-hole where this one (the youngest) almost died. I’ll do whatever I can to make sure he’s fed and if I’m frankly thankful to live in a country where I can get some short-term help to do it. He deserves a chance to live and thrive, and I am grateful for any help I can get right now. Maybe if you got to know some of the people who get help, you’d find out a lot of them have good reasons to need it and are just as embarrassed as I am at needing it.” His wife apologized and he just stood there with his mouth hanging open as I left. Stereotypes are easy to use, but seldom accurate, you know?

M. Betty — “JHM, I was aiming my shriek at YOU!!! raaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!”

Ooh, I likes ‘em cute n’ crazy! :D

Look, nobody here made the argument that welfare fraud *never* happens. It simply seems that if it were as pervasive as some of our con friends claim, there’d be more first-hand tales of it here, PLUS the tales would make sense (e.g. con sees welfare fraud, con REPORTS welfare fraud).

Frankly, I think that it happens a lot *less* than cons like to imagine it does, but I have no doubt that it *does* happen. And I don’t think it would be very wise to plan and execute some sort of mitigation plan without having a firm handle on the *size* of the issue in the first place.

And, FWIW, the same argument applies to illegosos and taxes, as far as I’m concerned.

I’m out; all be well and drive safely.

Scootter: She could have been like me. We went to daycare with a few kids whose grandmother had to take over raising them suddenly. She was a professional and had a nice car, but took the offered assistance for paying for daycare. Like me, it was a matter of keeping the bills paid until she could adjust the budget to having to take the children so suddenly. I don’t doubt there’s fraud out there- I had to report my sister for it once before we managed to get the kids away from that lifestyle. I’ve just learned not to judge too much by what I think I see, and it helps having been on the other side of the table, so to speak.

I’m not one of those “Deport them all” people, but there needs to be some way to handle the people already here and STOP the ones who plan on coming tomorrow. The secondary has been our weak point all season. Our saving grace has been that we’re able to stuff the run without bringing both safeties up into the box, or we were able to do that for most of the year. If Georgia beats Bama, it’s gonna take perfect execution of their gameplan to do so. Not too many people have fared well when Bama’s been given a 2nd shot at the crystal ball.

You’re likely to see a lot of historical information brought up too. This is the 20th anniversary of the first SECCG where Bama beat Florida. We went on that year to beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl for the first championship post-Bear Bryant. It seems that it would be fitting to celebrate that win over Miami with a win in Miami.

Well, you guys have better punter and kicker which could be big.

Dang, I’m sorry I brought up my daughter’s stories. And my choice of sentences following one another was unfortunate. I did not mean to say that my daughter witnessed food stamps being used fraudulently. Her stories concerned food stamp recipients using food stamps to buy food and then use cash to buy cigarettes and alcohol and other items, which as far as I know is perfectly legal (although I don’t consider it right). The story about the Atlanta store proprietor fraudulently redeeming food stamps is from the AJC. But if my daughter had witnessed fraud, if she was even trained to spot fraud, she never mentioned it.

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/lincoln-mary-owens-m-just-not-002941697.html

“…when I beheld her, I could not for my life avoid thinking of my mother ; and this, not from withered features, for her skin was too full of fat to permit of its contracting into wrinkles, but from her want of teeth, weather-beaten appearance in general, and from a kind of notion that ran in my head that nothing could have commenced at the size of infancy and reached her present bulk in less than thirty-five or forty years ; and, in short, I was not at all pleased with her.”

Playboy? Back when I was in Junior High, I got “caught” with a copy of it. The teacher called my Mama in and was telling her that she knew Mama didn’t know where I got it and that “when I asked him he had the brass to tell me he got it from you/” “Well,” Mama said, “he did. We fight over it.” We did. Playboy published Vonnegut and Mama and I both were big fans. She told the teacher that and the teacher sniffed, “well I doubt it was the articles he was looking at.” It was Mama’s turn to laugh, “well, I do. Frankly, I’d be relieved if he was looking at what you think.” She and I were both big Gahan Wilson fans.

Some light reading.
http://www.opednews.com/articles/A-Time-for-Clear-Headed-Th-by-Bayard-Waterbury-121112-845.html

This is where the clear headed thinking comes into play. The Eurozone nations are not like America. They are all operating from a common currency, the Euro, and have no control over deficit spending because of that. They don’t have their own reserve currency. They cannot print money, which, defacto, must be printed by the ECB. They must, like our individual states, find a way to balance their budgets. The fifty states in America must all balance their budgets or fail to pay their obligations. The Federal government does not have to. As we all know, the current deficit is in excess of $16.2 trillion, and growing. How did it get to be so big? There are lots of things which contributed to this, among them, the cost of the Iran and Afghan wars (which the Bush administration did not include in their budgets), the Medicare Drug Prescription (Part D) programs, and a failure, in general, to pay attention to the need to find a balance in our spending and taxation. Now, ask yourself a few questions:

First, how come we have such a remarkably large debt, and yet our bond ratings have remained stable, our currency has remained stable in world markets, generally, and the only talk of “default” is associated with a Congressional mandate to maintain a debt “ceiling” above which we cannot spend? (Which obviously is essentially meaningless, since it has been raised every single time it needs to be to allow for more spending.) If the US were a household, nervous creditors (our bond holders) would have long ago taken us into bankruptcy. They not only haven’t done this, or even talked about it (after all, how can you put a country into bankruptcy anyway), and continue to purchase our bonds without even requiring a higher interest rate in order to do so. There must be a reason for this.

This is where the story becomes interesting. The major reason why our currency has remained so stable, and why our bond interest has stayed so low, is very simple. Every owner of our bonds (our creditors) knows that the Federal Reserve can create money to pay them off any time it wants to. That is the key difference. So, let’s be clear. We have a fiat currency over which we have complete control; that currency is the world’s chief “reserve” currency; and the US has never, in its history, defaulted on a bond payment.

Yes, I know I’m becoming a little Sooth-obsessive about this topic, but, you know, it really does not make any sense that we are having a national freaking debate about the deficit at a time when we still have nearly double the rate of unemployment that should be acceptable, AND we have no inflation to speak of, AND our dollar is holding up just fine.

It makes no sense not to spend money to get people back to work. None.

Have you bought any carpet made in Dalton, chicken that was processed in Gainesville? Then you probably indirectly supported illegal immigration. You subsidized the companies that used illegal immigrants. You could have bought your chickens from the farmer next dorr, but you would have had to pay five times as much, so you just bought the cheap brand and now say ” I didn’t employ those illegal immigrants”. Corbin @ 6.51, it’s utterly bizarre that we don’t just spend the damn money for these things.

just one teeny tiny example: The westernmost portion of GA Route 20 in Gwinnett, can’t be widened because they haven’t been able to get one stupid freaking bridge built over the Hooch.

This isn’t some engineering quandry, it’s just a matter of spending the damn money. People need to work. People need to be able to GET TO work. And we can’t because austerity, or because Paul Ryan, or because some stupid-ass discredited, buried-at-the-goddamn polls ideology.

(not that it makes me irrationally angry or anything.)

But yeah, let’s argue over a sideshow issue like immigration. Like that is going to make a plug nickel’s worth of difference in our economic health. For f-ck’s sake, treat them humanely, give them every opportunity to be legal citizens, and move the f-ck on. Is this even remotely controversial, outside of AM talk radioland?

One of the things that encouraged me coming from the battle field of last year’s election was American vision of reality through the smoke scene of a billion dollar campaign to misrepresent this reality. The Republicans were auctioning off a fat lady as a beauty queen with all the makeup and soft lights, yet the American public saw the real product and was loyal to principle. You can always find convenient fear and excuses for acts of weak character and the right facilitates these vices to their advantage, but despite a greed dripping selfish driven pressure 65% of the country like faithful guide dogs found the right direction. This moral compass didn’t come from the ego factory of aggressive forceful policy makers in first class, too good to live among us, pay their fair share of taxes, it came from the common decency still found in fly over country, tax payers who are the real authors of the American dream. They understand the hope of those less fortunate, the character of fighting from the button and have an ear for the truth. This is what made and makes this country great, not the detachment we are seeing from the one percent but the full hearted involvement of the other 99%. It must drive a control freak crazy to live in such a great country.

Central American and Mexican workers have been crossing the border over the last 60+ years. It wasn’t difficult to do. They could pretty much come and go when they pleased. If they wanted to remain in the US, they could either marry a US citizen or find an employer to help them adjust status and become a legal permanent resident.

The law changed in April, 2002. It’s impossible for anyone that entered illegally to adjust status in the US. There is some process whereby you may return to your country of origin and request a hardship pardon, but the pardon is normally denied. The consequence of the denial is that you are prohibited from entering the US lawfully for 10 years.

Nothing is going to change the fact that Mexico shares a border with the US, and that a Mexican laborer in the US can earn in one day what they would earn in one week in Mexico. Let’s not pretend that illegal immigration just started happening in 2004. There are many highly educated and successful American citizens that were born of Mexican immigrants who came here illegally and stayed.

Over the centuries we have received a benefit from cheap labor. It started with the slave ships from Africa. The Chinese came and built the railroads. We imported millions of European immigrants on the trans-oceanic steamships like the Titanic. We tried child labor. Then we looked south of the border. It makes no sense to deny the people that have risked their lives to come here and work a chance to become lawful permanent residents and then citizens.

GT

It does seem ironic the very same people who are “Slaves are Us” suddenly find indignation in illegals. Bullies have to have something to fight about, cause doesn’t matter, like deer hunters they just need something to shoot.
