In Georgia alone, more than 10,000 immigrants who were brought to this country illegally as children have applied for a temporary reprieve to protect them from deportation. That’s a significant number, especially when you consider that the program was only announced five months ago.
There are a couple of ways to think about numbers that large.
Those who believe that illegal immigrants are by definition criminals who pose a threat to this nation’s economic security, soveriegnty and even ethnic identity would find 10,000 an ominous number. The same would be true of the 300,000 that have applied so far nationwide. And of course, that 300,000 in turn represent just a small subset of the 12 million or so illegal immigrants now in the country.
But there’s another way to look at it as well. The 10,000 applicants from Georgia — all of them between the ages of 15 and 31 — are people who think of themselves as Americans, who have lived much of their lives in this country and who very much want to be Americans. Most speak excellent English. They are not here, as some stereotypes would have it, to live off the rest of us.
In fact, to even be eligible for the program, these children of illegal immigrants must have graduated from an American high school, have earned a GED or still be in school. And while qualifying under the federal program makes them eligible for a temporary permit to work in this country, it does not make them eligible for government benefits of any kind.
And again, some 10,000 such people have applied in Georgia alone.
I understand that many Americans who take the first point of view about illegal immigrants are unlikely to change their minds. But the question is, where does that perpective lead us? If we take that position as a country, what policy options flow from it? If we insist that those people be treated as criminals, our only options are to try to identify them and deport them by force — all 12 million of them.
As a practical matter, that simply isn’t going to happen. It would be far too expensive, far too time-consuming and far to disruptive to the communities in which those 12 million have made their home. And as a matter of morality, it shouldn’t happen. Because here’s the thing that is acknowledged too seldom in this debate:
The vast majority of those who entered this country illegally in the past 25 years were lured to make lives here under an immigration enforcement regime that was lax not by accident or incompetence, but by design. We did little to enforce our borders, and even less to patrol the workplace, because our leaders made a conscious choice that in a booming economy, we could look the other way and make good use of their labor.
We — as a nation — broke our own laws, out of our own sense of greed. To now turn around and try to boot these people out because they are no longer convenient for us is not the act of a great nation.
And the American people understand that fact. In the wake of the election, a lot of attention has been focused on how poorly Republican candidates did among Latino voters. But the American people as a whole are also eager ready to resolve this question. In exit polling, 65 percent of all voters said that illegal immigrants ought to be given the chance to become citizens. Only 28 percent said they should be deported.
The public, in other words, is far ahead of its supposed leadership on this issue.

I’m sure there’s only a couple of illegal immigrants that would fall under that category though, right?

I’d bet goog money before the next election, these illegals will be given the right to vote. Anybody want to bet?
I’d hate to take your money away from you. It takes 5 years for a legal resident to be able to apply for citizenship. The only way that someone, who’s illegal now, would be a citizen and able to vote in 4 years is if they put their ass on the line in Afghanistan. Given the 2014 timetable, they would need to enlist now in order to get the combat time necessary to jump the line to citizenship.

It all depends. With the enactment of the “Secure Communities” program and the 287G program, the person caught jaywalking may be set up for deportation hearings if they have a criminal record. I haven’t heard of a case where someone, who’s only offense is something like jaywalking, has been deported, but there is always the first case just waiting to happen. I imagine that if the jaywalker is tatted up with MS-13 tats, they will get deported if they are undocumented.

Well now it is 2012 and we have 11 million more illegals and we are told again that we should just given them Amnesty. We have laws for a reason. This should not be about money but Morality. We need to enforce the law. Deport all illegal aliens, secure the border and fine anyone who hires an illegal. That is the law. Jay,
I’m in a helluva fix here…………on one hand I think immigration laws should be followed. On another, and this may sound like stereo-typing to some, the quote “illegals” that worked where I am employed out-worked the hell out of anything we had here previously, so your point is taken. They missed less time, learned more quickly, and busted their a$$e$. There is one who came to this country…..he had nothing and knew no English. He started at ***** (can’t name the company….may start blowing my cover) and eventually learned English. He never missed. He worked his way up and was made a shift manager. Four years ago, he was made sales manager at a great retail organization. But, for every great story like this, there are others with the drug trade, gang stuff (yeah, i know all races have gangs.) I do not agree that we should just open our borders to anybody, and I do know that it is easy to judge Arizona and places that border Mexico when you live in a state that does NOT have the same problem, since you have no frickin’ clue what these places have to deal with on a daily basis. However, lots of these cats can do and will do okay……..there has to be some way to get all this straightened out in a way that is fair but not stupid, honest but safe, etc. By the way, the guy above that I mentioned is NOT fictional…..he is one of the best managers I know and has built as much customer loyalty in four years as some do in a lifetime. And he came over because he was hungry…

We cannot just “drop-the-gates” and let everybody rush over, and I am not a proponent of that. But (Vidalia onion-harvest, for example) we now know the work ethic, and with work-ethic comes some good. Again, I sympathize with Arizona and places that have an undue burden placed on them that it is easy for outsiders (who do not have to deal with it) to judge. However, the rule is that you NEVER direct your anger against corporate CEO’s and management who benefit from all this “government fraud”…. you just go after the little people, or you cut the enforcement budget in the program

RF (and You, too, DDR, you can appreciate this)
I get tickled when folks go off on the free and reduced lunch thingie…part of my job is processing the lunch applications (required of any and all registrants). A lot of those folks talking about the lazy, good for nothing school employees would be shocked to know how many of them qualify…

As a public service, since all these good citizens witness so much SNAP fraud, here is the link to how you, good citizen that you are being all concerned and such, can report it: http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/fraud/fraud_4.htm. Or call 800.869.1150 in Georgia. With your help, why think how much you personally can cut the deficit and show “these people” to their jail cells.

“And if you did hear or see any, it’s a LIE!”
If Middle’s daughter witnessed it and didn’t report it, then she’s helping it to happen.
Maybe ICE should have a conversation with *her.*

josef: and a lot of them now qualify for Peachcare for their kids. I wish I had had that option when mine were little and I took the paycut to go to the country. I know some parapros at my school who work harder than a lot of the teachers and get paid diddly-squat for it.

“Everyone here knows for a fact that no one ever witnesses any fraud with SNAP because there isn;t any!”
Have a neighborhood big chain grocery store. Saw a woman unsling one of those big binders containing checks and write out a check for a large cart of groceries. I know the cashier – asked her ‘was that a business check? ” She said ‘yup, does all her family shopping here, pays for it every time with a check from their business.”
Then just last week I was in the lounge at a car wash and the guy next to me said on his cell phone “you know, finding where to hide the money is one of the great challenges of owning your own business.”
So I’m kinda tired of hearing about “what part of illegal don’t you understand” and “we all know the SNAP program is full of fraud” and all the rest when we have a party making mantras out of that who are telling us all how small businesses are overtaxed and just average, honest, hardworking Amuricans who are all the best this country has to show.

Keep: funny how many “know” they see it happen, but won’t bother to report it. It’s like Reagan’s mythical Welfare Queens. Everybody swore they had seen one, but… kinda like Bigfoot, I guess.

Paul: my best friend owns his own business and has every car in his household listed as a company vehicle. Gets cheaper insurance and gets to write off all the gas, etc. they buy on the company credit card. It’s an allowable tax game business owners pay that is actually legal. But let’s don’t let them moochers come here and do an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay….NOOOOO, can’t have that, unless they’re working for me and I benefit from paying them a small sum in cash every day.

Well, let me give the credit where it belongs. When Unmentionable was getting established I put in my time in the real world in the corporate sphere, hating what I did, but bringing home the bulk of the shekels. When he was established he came to me and said that it was now my turn to do what I wanted to. Well, I have been and I owe it to him for that opportunity…

On Scout…the boy can piss me off big time, but I will find myself coming to his defense any number of times from exactly what you said…he don’t like gay people and thinks we’re all going to hell, but if that preacher up in NC were to have his way and lock us up in camps, Scout would hide me and lay down his life. All in all, I’ll take that personal loyalty over some theoretical one any day of the week…

Looks to me like it happened in this case because Middle’s daughter didn’t care. Maybe instead of shrieking about libs, you could instead berate Middle’s daughter about ‘the one that got away.’

Betty: if they don’t care, then they need to quit griping about it. It’s like the pee testing for welfare applicants in Florida. Lotta hoopla that hasn’t turned out to be the big deal they thought it was. “I know it happens” just isn’t good enough, period.

It’s not that great. Wanted to pig out at the crableg buffet at the casino (only $34 with my “frequent flyer” card)
They refused to take it…..told ‘em to just stick their crablegs…..so unfair…havin’ to spend my own $$.

It’s politically impossible, but if there was a large-scale audit of small businesses, I wouldn’t be surprised if we found a scale of fraud and deception that would have some wondering if we’d turned into Greece.
DDR
That was a nice thought, thanks. I will say, though, that given the circumstances of where I am and how I arrived here, I am grateful every day in recognition of the forces and circumstances, many not of my own doing, that make is possible for me to be here and do what I do. It’s a real dousing of cold water humility every day that I gladly embrace.

2nd part of your 4:52 as merit from a personal level (yours). If you are someone that doesn’t have that same type relationship on this blog and read what he has posted, I would have to say that while not totally agreeing with DDR’s take, I do line up much closer to her response than to yours. And I have only been on this blog 2 yrs.
