The first song ever written was a love song. You know, somebody pledging their ever-lasting love and fidelity to somebody else.
The second song ever written was a cheatin’ song, complaining about the lyin’ SOB who wrote the first song.
Given recent events, it’s time to pay homage to the second oldest song topic. I’ve invited the great Miss Kitty Wells to kick off the evening’s festivities, performing a song dedicated to Paula Broadwell and all the other honky-tonk angels out there, wherever you are.

Funny you should post that, heathen. Many years ago, I was walking up the back stairwell of a Vegas hotel and as I’m climbing up, I can hear this couple coming down the stairs up above, and they’re fussin’ and feudin’ and fightin’ up a storm. The whole stairwell is echoing.
And then I turn the corner and they see me and we pass each other and everybody’s quiet and embarrassed.
It was Tanya Tucker and Glen Campbell.

One thing you can say about Georgia. We have a bunch of folks that are really good at the turn of a phrase. Take this Georgia boy:
I said the day you left me, nothin’ worse could ever happen, but seeing you with someone else proved that I was wrong.
And when you eyes met mine I knew that you were gone forever, along with all the reason, I had for hanging on.
I’d be better off, in a pine box, on a slow train back to Georgia, or in the grey walls of a prison doing time.
I think I’d rather die and go to hell and face the devil. Than to lie here with you and him, together in my mind………..

Come up on different streets they both were streets of shame

How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?
When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me thick and thin yeah

Back when Emmylou was getting started, a bigshot record executive told her if she’d get a really hot band he might record her. So Emmylou—no dummy herself, for she was valedictorian of her high school class and a scholarship winner at the University of North Carolina—went out and got the best musicians available. They included the Englishman Albert Lee, the fellow playing lead guitar in Tulsa Queen. Albert might be, along with Grady Martin, the finest guitarman that ever lived. Emmylou herself said of him, “When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I’ll be able to say (with pride if that’s allowed) that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee.” You probably saw Albert Lee playing lead guitar on the reunion tour of the Everly Brothers.
Anyhow, since she was asked to get a hot band, the only name for it was The Hot Band. And the rest is history.

Re, Emmy Lou, et al, the awesome Jackson Browne said it best…
Talk about your celestial bodies
And your angels on the wing
She wasn’t much good at stickin’ around–but
She could sing…
She could shine a light
On some places that you’ve never been
In that kind of light
You could lose your sight
And believe there was something to win
You could hold her tight
With all your might
But she’d slip through your arms like the wind
And be back in flight
Back into the night

OK. For anyone who’s still sober and awake. Pay attention to the station manager/owner in this video, which was made in 2001. In what 2005 movie was he featured in a major supporting role? Hint: The movie had everything to do with an OFFICE environment. It had nothing whatsoever to do with outer SPACE. Now, for extra credit, what role did the station manager play? Hint: he had an obsession with Swingline staplers. Heck, this is too easy!

Wonder if Broadwell ever “did it” to Petraeus in his office? Oh wait, wrong public official but I don’t recall any loss of job or even hint of regret on the part of that U.S. president. Of course he didn’t resign – a sham in itself that one of our most reknown military and security leaders had his resignation accepted for an indiscretion that had no country-threatening implications proved at the time (nor since). Seems to me that hearing his rather formidable wife’s “furious” state of mind would have been punishment enough. But then that would have prevented the news media from its four or five day media frenzy, wouldn’t it? And likewise, force them to pay more attention, air-time and print to the Benghazi incident. Not a bad trade off if you were a White House advisor.

The Department of Labor has announced that new jobless claims rose by a staggering 78,000 in the first week after the election, reaching a seasonally-adjusted total of 439,000. Over the past year, and in the weeks leading up to the election, jobless claims were said to be declining, dipping as low as 339,000, with the media proclaiming that they had reached the “lowest level in more than four years.” Now, suddenly, the news seems far less rosy.
From the Department of Labor press release this morning:
In the week ending November 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 439,000, an increase of 78,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 361,000. The 4-week moving average was 383,750, an increase of 11,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 372,000.
Some of the new claims, especially in New Jersey, were due to Hurricane Sandy–but these were offset by a decline in claims filed in New York. The highest numbers of new filings came from Pennsylvania and Ohio, where there were thousands of layoffs in the construction, manufacturing, and automobile industries…

So the cons will not give up on their Benghazi escapade after Petreus himself testified that he stories the GOP, Fox News and his lover put out were false stories about CIA intelligence reports. (See the floozies Oct. 26 speech in Denver claiming reliable sources in the CIA told her CIA was holding prisoners before the attack) The cons cannot accept that the intelligence directors of various agencies decided not to disclose in unclassified talking points that Ms. Rice repeated verbatim that they suspected Al-Quaida involvement in an attack on the anniversary of 9-11. Go ahead cons and substitute your distorted beliefs for a decision of our intelligence officials. Did you hear any apologies from any of the cons yesterday?????
People like dcb cannot accept that unlike Ms. Broadwell there were no breaches of security with Ms. Lewinsky (Yeah there was a secret recording device in that cigar).
Now the cons like Mr. Wingfield are looking for any misstep of the president in supporting Israel in its battle with Hamas. Their boy George Neville Chamberlain Bush forced Israel to uilaterally abandon all settlements in Gaza and businesses in 2005 claiming this would pave the way for peace with the Palestinians. Now the Israelis are faced with their version of the London Blitz.Luckily Obama helped secure funding for the Iron Dome system that is intercepting hundreds of Iranian rockets. So cons move on and grow up.

Talking about cheaters – they sure look out for each other:
“”"”"”"”"Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stopped by Fox & Friends Tuesday morning to promote his new book, but was first asked to share his thoughts on the ever-widening scandal surrounding General David Petraeus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell.
Gingrich said he was taken aback by the “methodical dishonesty” in the months since the September 11 attack on Benghazi. “I think,” he added, “that the administration is still not laid it out and has not been forth coming, which is bad for the whole system. And then second, if you — we can’t come to grips with how much some people hate us. And the fact that Benghazi was a surprise? Give me a break.”
Host Steve Doocy asked Gingrich what he made “of the fact that the with mainstream media has followed the White House’s lead” on the story, maintaining that the President did not know about Petraeus’ situation until after the election.
Gingrich said this was the first time he’s realized that “this has been going on for months,” later adding that he’d been told “by people in the room” that Petraeus had in fact been “the one guy” who said the Benghazi attack was an act of terrorism and not a protest to a video.”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/newt-gingrich-im-shocked-by-the-methodical-dishonesty-since-benghazi-attack/
Yeah – Paula leaked all this to Newt and Fox. No comment about the broad sleeping with Petreaus or having classified information on her computer or trying to influence the election. Calista look out!

Stands, If they can sell the attack to the people as a response to the video, they can avoid having to tell the people a few weeks before the election that they had a terrorist attack on their watch. In a place we’ve had several other attacks in the past 6 months. In a place where the there had been requests for increased security and it hadn’t been provided. On 9/11.
Personally, I don’t think ANY adminsitration can fully prevent all these terroist attacks. We stop alot of them with our intel sources, but the Cole bombing, WTC 1, WTC 2, embassy bombings, etc. all happened even with all the intel we have. I believe Obama, Bush, and Clinton all did the best they can to prevent them.
I don’t like being lied to. Period. Somebody made up some BS story about youtube video and fed it to us like we’re a bunch of idiots supposed to feel guilty for making an offensive video and deserving of the attack we got as a result. That person has no business being paid by American tax dollars and being in any position of influence in this nation.

“So the cons will not give up on their Benghazi escapade after Petreus himself testified that he stories the GOP, Fox News and his lover put out were false stories about CIA intelligence reports.”
Where and how did you come up with that bit of ignorance? Petreus testified that after the CIA talking points left Langley the CIA reference to a planned terrorist attack on the consulate by Ansar al Sharia a AQ affiliate was deleted. He didn’t know how or by who that reference got deleted nor did anyone from the intelligence community. The best guess is that it was deleted by person or persons in the White House. It has been reported correctly or incorrectly that Rice had access to both the original CIA talking points and the changed document. If that’s true she was nothing but a walking, talking propagandist for the Obama administration knowingly misleading the American people. Time for a special prosecutor.

sfd…from the less enlightened side (once again): Obama’s foreign policy is based on being the anti-Bush. He claims responsibility for killing BinLaden and proclaiming that AlQueada is weak and going away. The events of Benghazi destroyed the narrative and he could not have that right before the election. Knowing that the sycophants in the media had his back. There was no downside to this foolish claim. I know you will not accept this as your worship for all things Liberal is set but it is a valid explanation. Have A Nice Day

You know you’ve arrived in Nuttsville, USA when the conned are holding on to dear life to a conspiracy theory that is NOT a conspiracy nor a theory!! For example:
RB: they can avoid having to tell the people a few weeks before the election that they had a terrorist attack on their watch. In a place we’ve had several other attacks in the past 6 months
The fact that RB is parroting, almost verbatim, the words that come out of Rush LimpBalls azz is darn right scary! RB WHAT other attacks in Libya did WE have over the past 6 months? Please explain!!
Here’s another gem:
Scout: Petreus testified that after the CIA talking points left Langley the CIA reference to a planned terrorist attack on the consulate by Ansar al Sharia a AQ affiliate was deleted. He didn’t know how or by who that reference got deleted nor did anyone from the intelligence community
Do you know what’s so funny about that statement Scout? When the Senator who said it spoke, directly after the hearing to “mainstream media”, he had a different story!! he TWEAKED his story when he stood before Faux News! Thats why I’m soooo glad I live in the 21st Century (I know it bothers you scout); but in this century you can actually FIND the video link of him saying one thing to MSM and a slightly DIFFERENT version to FAux News!!

Allright here’s some bones for the Conned to gnaw on (still searching for the VIDEO link, of the two different tales from King):
Petraeus told lawmakers today that he consistently told Congress that there were terrorist elements involved in the attack, but King said he remembers Petraeus’ Sept. 14 testimony differently.
SIDE– King remembers “differently” because Petraeus’ didn’t tell him what he WANTED to hear……
“I told him… I had a very different recollection of that,” King said.
Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., didn’t agree with King’s recollection of the Sept. 14 briefing.
Ruppersberger told reporters after the hearing, “My recollection was … [Petraeus said] it was the result of the protest… but he also said in the group there were some extremists and some where al Qaeda affiliates.”
Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., said, “Gen. Petraeus as director of the CIA has been completely consistent.”

Most Americans just aren’t that worked up over what happened in Benghazi. They’re much more concerned about jobs and the economy. Unfortunately Big Business is sitting on it’s profits and has yet to start hiring and producing more jobs. Politicans can’t tell Business what to do about hiring so, Republicans, desperate for anything they can find to hurt the Democrats, keep beating this dead Benghazi horse.
If Republicans can swallow their pride and dogma, maybe they can start to address the real problems that plague us Americans.

He knew “almost immediately” that Ansar al-Sharia, a loosely connected radical Islamist group, was responsible for the attack, as suggested by multiple sources and video from the scene, said the source. At the same time, a stream of intelligence — including about 20 distinct reports — also emerged indicating that a brewing furor over the anti-Islamic video preceded the attack.
The CIA eventually disproved the reports that film-related protests had anything to do with the attack. But this didn’t happen until after Petraeus’ initial briefings to lawmakers, in which he discussed all the possibilities, the source said.

“When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom that profit loses.”

― Thomas Jefferson
I am opposing a social order in which it is possible for one man who does absolutely nothing that is useful to amass a fortune of hundreds of millions of dollars, while millions of men and women who work all the days of their lives secure barely enough for a wretched existence.”
― Eugene Victor Debs
The hand that gives is among the hand that takes. Money has no fatherland, financiers are without patriotism and without decency, their sole object is gain.”
― Napoleon Bonaparte
“Capitalism tries for a delicate balance: It attempts to work things out so that everyone gets just enough stuff to keep them from getting violent and trying to take other people’s stuff.”

When you want to take public money and give it to FOR PROFIT corporations which has only interest in profit and NOT in the needs of the consumer, then you have a problem.
For instance — that house that burned down in Kansas(?) because the firefighters weren’t allowed to to put it out because the home owner didn’t pay some fee. Can you imagine that happening during 9/11? What if those brave firefighters who risked their own lives to save others said to the World Trade Center occupants when they called, “Hey, you guys are behind on your fees — sorry can’t help you; our policy states…….”?

RB – for grins and giggles I DID google the question, “How many attacks on the US Consulate in Libya since 2011″
You can find my google search here: http://tinyurl.com/bsuo8pf
After searching all 12 pages — i found only ONE. Not the SEVERAL that you mentioned in the past 6 months. It made me think you meant to say in the past several YEARS there were lots of attacks on the Libyan consulate. So I googled that too. Came up short with that one also.
I DID however find this gem:
FACT: There Have Been Numerous Embassy And Consulate Attacks Under Recent Presidents
There Have Been At Least 15 Attacks On U.S. Embassies And Consulates Since 1979 — Including Seven Under George W. Bush. U.S. embassies and consulates were attacked at least 15 times under the presidencies of Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush. Seven of those attacks occurred during the presidency of George W. Bush. [Media Matters, 9/14/12]
I was shocked!! There were ATTACKS under the sainted DUBYA!?! How was that possible? I mean, i don’t recall seeing you or any of the other regular conned on this blog being upset about it!!

Of course there have been facts reported that is the evidence. Word games won’t get you anywhere. What Bush was saying is that defeating AQ and radical Islam was the priority and in case you haven’t been paying attention the demise of Bin Ladin didn’t prevent 9-11-12 in Benghazi.

This one again? most people don’t salivate like a lab dog at the word “terrorist attack.” It wouldn’t make a dime’s worth of difference to the people who were even slightly inclined to vote for Obama.

And I will once again state–if it the 9/11/12 attack were part of a spontaneous violent Islamic-world-wide outrage over an offensive online video, that would, to me at least, be a damn sight scarier to me, anyway, than a specific gang in Libya committing an opportunistic act of murder in one place. I also believe that the former scenario would, if anything, reflect more poorly on the Obama administration’s diplomatic efforts than the latter.

The unclassified talking points of the intelligence directors was almost word for word what Ms. Rice said based on a desire by Petreaus and others to keep classified any possible link to Al-Quaida. Ms. bimbo and others leaked out the classified CIA intel report which was not intended for public broadcast. Of course since Ms. bimbo had classifiied info on her computer, she was the likely source. Unfortunately Ms Rice has integrity and abides by government security regulations unlike Ms. Bimbo who got her info. on the cheating side of town. But she is your hero obviously.

If that is how you view things, so be it.
To live as a defeatist must be an agonizing and painfully slow death.
Our country faces challenges and those challenges will present opportunities.
Once we muzzle the wing-nuts on both sides of the aisle and begin to focus on the things that truly matter, we will be able to capitalize on those opportunities.
Fair taxation, fiscal sanity, energy independence, ecological stability and education are complex issues and there are many ways to approach how to solve them. Neither side is gonna get everything they want, so compromise is key. That is the way of things.
I hope we see a return to the day when both sides can stand proudly on the steps the Capitol and hold up a bill and announce that “This is a good piece of legislation that will benefit the citizens of the United States” They must be allowed to do this without fear of being branded by some self-appointed, bloviating blowhard as some kind of political traitor.

RB @1:18: Here you go Debbie. http://cnsnews.com/news/article/chaffetz-administration-pretended-june-6-terror-attack-benghazi-consulate-never
Notice it refers to the 9/11 attack as the “3rd” attack, meaning there were “several” before that one?
RB I really am scared now for your sanity. You referenced a “news source” that on its web site has this statement – “Don’t Let The Left Liberal Media Lie To You”. “
And when I google CNS News I get this: CNSNews.com was founded by L. Brent Bozell III on June 16, 1998, under the name Conservative News Service and the domain name conservativenews.org.[3] According to Bozell, the website would “report news …not touched by traditional television news outlets” and “fill the growing news void left by the establishment media in their chase for the sensational.
You’re falling into the same trap AGAIN RB! Can’t you see that? You didn’t like the news that the polls were giving you that said Obama was ahead; so you blamed the “Left Leaning Media” and the fact that the pollsters were somehow lying or over sampling dems.
Then you found a poll that said, and this is a salient point, EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANTED TO HEAR!!!. You’re doing the same thing AGAIN, but your hatred and insanity doesn’t want you to see it!!!
Google really isn’t that hard, Debbie. Maybe your mom’s parental controls are holding you back???
You have reached the realms of insanity so deep, so dark, I don’t think anyone can pull you back.
On a good note however, I hope your party is doing the exact same thing that you are doing!!! I hope they keep right on the path of lunacy and by 2020 we can finally say goodbye to the Republic(CAN’T)can party!! Keep following that rabbit hole!!
PS: I’ll light a candle for you. Just in case.
Kam @ 1:20: Romney lost, not because of a terrorist attack, but because the majority of voters didn’t like him for the job. Geez….
Kam, you can say that a million times and they STILL won’t hear you or believe you. It HAD to be because of all the “Free stuff” the Prez had offered. Or because people “Don’t want to work”.
The last part, “people don’t want to work” I find especially funny because everytime I see on the news about a Job Fair or some company Hiring, I see hundreds and sometimes thousands of people standing in line trying to get hired for those 100 or so jobs that are being offered.
Lazy people would’ve just stayed home.

Everyone in 1980s Soviet Union era Russia would’ve laughed in your face too if you had ever suggested that there would be a free Belarus, Georgia, Ukraine, and all the Stans. Then the same thing happened there that is about to hit here…..economic collapse and a central government that kept leaning on people and trying to force multiple cultures to maintain one society. History says that the U.S. will split into several smaller nations and that it’s only a matter of time. We have 20 years, tops, before complete economic collapse and the government losing its ability to govern beyond a local scope. We won’t really HAVE to secede, because things will get real and much uglier that way. Your choice. It will be peaceful or it will be like it was in the USSR, but it will eventually happen. http://www.ajc.com/news/news/georgia-schools-lay-unequal-foundations-for-colleg/nS9B8/
Most agree that money and location play a role in the disparities between Georgia schools. The AJC analysis specifically shows:
About 5 percent of students took advanced placement exams in extremely rural areas, compared to more than 20 percent in large suburban districts.
Rural districts spend about $400 less than others per student. Spending doesn’t guarantee success, but rural superintendents say they can’t afford educational extras that are standard in suburban schools.
Teachers don’t have the same opportunities for training and development. Those in smaller, poorer districts often face more demands and professional isolation, a barrier to improvement.
….
Georgia has the nation’s third-largest rural enrollment and it’s among the poorest performing, according to the Rural School and Community Trust, a Washington nonprofit. While a few rural districts perform well, the study found overall Georgia’s rural students are among the lowest scorers on national exams and their graduation rate is the nation’s second-lowest, behind Louisiana.
The problem has statewide implications. Projections show about 60 percent of jobs by 2020 will require some education beyond high school. Now, 42 percent of Georgia’s adults have a college degree or certificate.
Taxpayer dollars from wealthier counties like Cobb are already used to subsidize rural districts with sparse local tax bases in an effort to even out inequities.
“The fabric of metro Atlanta’s economy is tightly interwoven with the fabric of rural Georgia’s economy,” said Jeff Humphreys, director of the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth. “If a thread comes loose in one corner of rural Georgia, it will eventually unravel in metro Atlanta.”
Good to know that the charter school amendment will fix that… if only that were the case. Once again, Georgia elects to do something that runs counter to what they actually need.

The comparisons are quite remarkable…
Secessionist want to leave the system, the OWS wanted to change the system — so yes, the comparison is remarkably obvious.
To say that one is like the other is a painfully obvious false equivalence.

But we also want the South and the Midwest and want your carpetbagging ass out of here.
Slight problem — A) not everyone in the south wants to secede, (the smart ones); B) Demographically, you don’t have enough people/signatures to validate that request.
Take an island somewhere in the South Pacific that the US currently owns; one that’s isolated and miles away from the next civilized island; so as not to spread your “disease” to others — makes more sense for everyone involved.
Besides, on Samoa there are BROWN people there! You secessionist might not like living around anymore BROWN people.

When desperation clashes with Reality…
Many states thought that they were creating laws that would not isolate the Hispanic population…Once the election was over; they realized that they would NEVER be able to regain control of the White House without their votes. They have received a revelation from God to pander to the Hispanic community to secure future votes…what a bunch of desperate hypocrites!!! Alabama and Georgia should go down in history as one of the most heartless states when it comes to dealing with people of color…
________________________
Facing big demographic changes, Alabama GOP to reach out for Hispanic vote
MONTGOMERY — When Hector Caballero came to this country, he had $200 to his name.
Caballero, 45, is now a neurologist, practicing medicine from an office in Northport.
“This is the only country where you can do something like that,” said Caballero, who said he left Cuba at age 26 and lived in other countries before coming to the United States.
Caballero is a rock-ribbed Republican who says he voted for Mitt Romney and “would do it again and again.” But he thinks his party screwed up the fine points of the immigration issue.
“You cannot give citizenship to people who came here illegally,” he said. “But for those who were one or two years old and had no choice, you have to give them a pathway to citizenship. That’s how we lost the argument.”
Caballero ran for a seat as a delegate to the Republican National Convention earlier this year — and he lost. But now that GOP nominee Mitt Romney lost the election, due in part to the loss of the Hispanic vote, party leaders have developed a keener interest in hearing his voice.
“We’re going to be reaching out to Hispanics in Alabama, in terms of honing our message to them,” said Bill Armistead, chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
The Nov. 6 election delivered a punishing message to immigration hard-liners within the GOP.
In the years before the election, several states, from Arizona to Georgia, passed immigration laws that allowed police to ask people for proof of citizenship on routine traffic stops, and giving them the power to detain people who couldn’t prove they were here legally. Alabama’s law, by most accounts, was the toughest of them all, demanding proof of citizenship for all sorts of government transactions, from getting an electrician’s license to buying a car tag.

That is pure comedy coming from someone who’s group benefits from that very thing. Cubans have a free ride to citizenship, even after arriving here illegally. All they have to do is say they’re Cuban, and they’re put on the instant path to citizenship.

Government spending now amounts to 56 percent of GDP in France, more than double what it is in the United States. To pay for this profligacy, the government’s 2013 budget proposes taxing top earners at a 75 percent rate and those earning more than 150,000 euros, or about $191,000 per year, at 45 percent. Other taxes also are going up (on dividend income and certain capital gains, for instance). All of which has pushed France’s wealth and jobs creators – its business leaders – to the point of desperation.
Yeah, that is really so much like our immediate future… Lemme see, first, we’d have to double our spending percentage to GDP. That would require the GOP to go ape shiite crazy with the appropriations bills in the House.
Then, the top 1% tax rate would have to double from it’s current rate. Then, the top 20% would have to get an increase in their tax rate up to 45%.
Nevermind the fact that all Democrats are suggesting is a return to Clinton level rates, which are far less than what France is going through.
On the “in touch with reality” meter, this one get’s a Nelson…

It only gives more support to some idiots who suggest there will be a “rude awakening…stand by” [wink, wink, nudge, nudge -- second amendment remedy violence]. Unlike the GOP, true patriotism involves accepting that others disagree with you and that they may elect someone not your choice. Real americans know how to act like grown ups. Israel Military Implements Gaza War, Phase1 of Iran Nuclear Attack Plan
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing an election in January 2013 had clearly put the Gaza attack plans on low gear until after the US Presidential election, following which Israel virtually immediately embarked upon a series of military provocations including sending tanks into Gaza on November 8th that killed a Palestinian child, then 2 days later fired a number of shells into Gaza killing a 4 civilians and wounding 38 others. The trigger for Gaza retaliation was the targeted assassinations of Hamas military commander Ahmed Jabari who was killed by a missile that was followed by an extensive bombing campaign to inflame Hamas into retaliating with longer range rockets.
I invite all of you to read this article and see how closely Israel and Netanyahu follows this timeline.
Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac.

It is as if everyone knows, but will never acknowledge, that we may speak only in code, and that we may only utilize the safe, empty phrases that we have agreed are ‘acceptable’ — phrases and language that are safe precisely because they have been drained of all correspondence to facts.
It is as if everyone realizes, but will never state, that we are engaged in an elaborate charade, a pageant of gesture and indication, where substance and specific meaning have been banned. … [T]he truth is not merely unpleasant, an uninvited guest who makes conversation difficult and awkward. Truth is the enemy; truth is to be destroyed.”
Gaza is a concentration camp. It is not like a concentration camp. It is not a metaphorical or figurative concentration camp. It is a concentration camp. Our culture, our political leaders, and the cacophony of voices in the media have all agreed that this truth must never be spoken.

Talk about sore loosers:
The clock ran out Sunday in Florida on a partial recount in Rep. Allen West’s House race. Officials were not able to finish by the deadline.
MIAMI – Tea Party-backed Republican Congressman Allen West said he was still not ready to concede defeat on Sunday, almost two weeks after the Nov. 6 election, when the clock ran out on a partial recount in South Florida.
Results showing West trailing Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy by 1,900 votes were now expected to be turned over to the state Division of Elections for official certification.
West was granted a recount of early ballots in St. Lucie county at the weekend, but officials were unable to complete the process before time ran out at midday on Sunday.
“Today at noon, it became clear Patrick Murphy will be officially certified as the next congressman from the 18th Congressional District,” said Murphy’s campaign manager Anthony Kusich. “It is beyond time to put this campaign behind us.”
Under Florida law in the event of an incomplete recount the original returns are automatically submitted for certification by the state.
“This election is far from over,” said West’s campaign manager, Tim Edson, in a statement calling the results “highly suspect.”

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/abortion/54_are_pro_choice_38_pro_life
More voters than ever now identify themselves as pro-choice when it comes to abortion, and most rate the issue as important to how they vote.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters shows that 54% describe themselves as pro-choice on the issue of abortion, while 38% say they are pro-life.
I guess the intelligent take-away is that these particular self-identifying terms are pretty fluid–even more fluid than I’d originally thought.
However, I’ve always asserted, with a fair amount of justification, that a solid majority of Americans, even if they call themselves “pro-life,” support legal access to elective abortion in the first trimester, i.e., they support Roe v. Wade, and they have for a very long time.
Republican Outreach Leaves Immigrants, Minority Groups Skeptical
November 19th, 2012
7:33 am
BALTIMORE, Nov 18 (Reuters) – Latinos, African-Americans and other minorities who helped President Barack Obama win a second term are skeptical about enhanced Republican outreach to their communities, but also say the future of the coalition that shaped the 2012 election may be fragile.
Top Republicans rushed to do damage control last week after Mitt Romney blamed his election loss on what he called an Obama strategy of giving “gifts” to blacks, Latinos and young voters – groups instrumental to the president’s re-election victory.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, and other Republicans warned that the party could not broaden its appeal unless it stopped insulting the very voters its was trying to reach.
“We have to really question their motives and how they’re tokenizing these faces of color,” Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, told activists and organizers at a conference on racial issues in Baltimore this weekend.
She said Latino voters and other minority groups remained on guard given the Republicans’ reluctance to embrace immigration reform and other substantive issues. She said it had not escaped notice that most delegates at Republican convention were white despite the inclusion of Latino speakers.

…and if it makes you feel better, Kyle haz a sad about the polling.
my point about personhood being a political loser will, unfortunately, be truer than ever if one of the conservative Supreme Court justices or court swing vote Anthony Kennedy ends up leaving the bench during the next four years and President Obama gets to nominate his replacement. The question will truly be settled for another generation
One can only hope.

Morning, USinUK
Doing a Thanksgiving celebration this year?
Ordered a ham, delivered to my sister’s, have a turkey defrosting, started the breadbaking last night for the dressing (please let’s not reopen the Northern-Southern divide with ‘if it ain’t cornbread it ain’t real stuffing’ thing. People generally like the holiday foods with which they were raised), but having got that out of the way..
“I keep wanting to ask them, “oh, you mean the children the Israelis keep BOMBING””
Innocents die in war. It’s one of the horrible facts of life. A key point is, why do those deaths occur? By direct targeting, or not?
Israel is not risking their lives and resources by targeting children. They are targeting enemy leadership and missile/munition stores. Hamas knows storing munitions in urban areas will not deter Israel from attacking, so I’d have to say Hamas bears some responsibility in the deaths of their children and are willing to accept that to score propaganda points.
It also leads to the question of ‘at what civilian/casualty expected level do we not engage a military operation?”
Again, I think the key point is how the casualties occur, if they were the result of deliberate targeting and if procedures are followed that would minimize such casualties.

no – it’s just not the same without the Macys parade and football … I’ll bop into work on Thursday and enjoy a blissfully quiet day with the US offices closed
when Israel is purposefully targeting people’s homes – Hamas leadership or not – they are deliberately killing civilians. Yes, innocents do die in war – the difference is whether or not they are deliberately targeted.

I can see the point about targeting the homes. Wouldn’t exactly call the Hamas leadership ‘civilians’ in this context, though, and it’s reasonable to expect others will be killed in an urban setting if one particular building is targeted. I would say, though, that the Israeli calculation is probably along the lines of “We target the house, we run the possibility of killing x noncombatants but we may take out a leadership person. We don’t target the house, we don’t kill the leadership person and we’ve just ensured Y Israelis – including children – are killed in the future.”
We make the same calculation with drone strikes.
War is dirty, evil and the innocent suffer for the sins of others.
anyhow, I’m off to the gym to try to mitigate some of the indulgence I’ll engage in the next few days.
