Petraeus: Resignation has nothing to do with Benghazi

In off-camera and apparently rather poignant conversations with Kyra Phillips of CNN and Headline News, David Petraeus has made it clear that his resignation as CIA director has everything to do with his own personal failings, and nothing whatsoever to do with the tragedy in Benghazi and its aftermath:

As Phillips recounted the conversations:

“He has said this has nothing to do with Benghazi and he wants to testify. He will testify. He has maintained to me all along this was a personal failing, Robin, which, as I said, to me was quite stunning and to many other people. He’s not the type of person that I’ve ever known to fail at anything, knowing [him] as long as I have over the years. And so he has made it very clear that this was about an extramarital affair and not over classified information or Benghazi.”

Of course, there is no expectation that such statements will quell the conspiracy theorists. The hunger to believe overwhelms rationality for some. But there it is nonetheless.

Benghazi….

Would that be the same Benghazi that McCain got his knickers twisted up about?

The same Benghazi that was the subject of a closed door hearing on the hill today by the committee Mr. Mc Cain sits on?

That Senator McCain did not bother to attend?

The General is doing the correct thing by voluntarily testifying but there’s justifiable concern with his comments shortly after 9-11 to congress supporting the administrations position that the attack was a result of an anti-Islamic video that grew out of hand when facts that he should have been aware of at the time of his testimony as CIA director dispelled that version. Hopefully for his own credibility he’ll clear that up but that still won’t clear the Obama administration of attempted cover up or inexcusable incompetence.

New jobless claims... Forward???

November 15th, 2012
2:49 pm

In the week ending November 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 439,000, an increase of 78,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 361,000. The 4-week moving average was 383,750, an increase of 11,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 372,000.

Some of the new claims, especially in New Jersey, were due to Hurricane Sandy–but these were offset by a decline in claims filed in New York. The highest numbers of new filings came from Pennsylvania and Ohio, where there were thousands of layoffs in the construction, manufacturing, and automobile industries.

Both states had been targeted by the presidential campaigns. President Obama highlighted his record of job creation in Ohio in particular, focusing on the automobile industry. The state reported 6,450 new jobless claims in the week after the election–second-highest after Pennsylvania, which recorded 7,766 new claims.

So, it’s hard to say this in public, mostly because we wanted to be discreet and not cause drama. But once the media dogs get onto something, they won’t let go until they get their bite. So, media, here is your media bite. HUMANS LIKE SEX.”

FWIW, *any* officer is supposed to be forthright and trustworthy. Sure, some will be *much* better field commanders than others; some officers are tactically proficient and others are exceptional administrators — but the common thread is supposed to be a high level of character, intelligence and loyalty.

I’ve always found the best assessment of an officer to come from his or her troops. Ask them, ‘would you go to war with Captain/Colonel/General Hufflepuff’ and you’ll be able to determine that officer’s worth from the collective responses of the troops under his or her command.

JB
David Petraeus has made it clear that his resignation as CIA director has everything to do with his own personal failings, and nothing whatsoever to do with the tragedy in Benghazi and its aftermath:

What’s clear to me is that Fibbing is part of the job description:

The Sins Of General David Petraeus

More so than any other leading military figure, Petraeus’ entire philosophy has been based on hiding the truth, on deception, on building a false image. “Perception” is key, he wrote in his 1987 Princeton dissertation: “What policymakers believe to have taken place in any particular case is what matters — more than what actually occurred.” Yes, it’s not what actually happens that matters — it’s what you can convince the public it thinks happened
———————-

Petraeus’ first biographer, former U.S. News and World Report reporter Linda Robinson, wrote a book about him, then went to CENTCOM to work for him.
Yes — a so-called journalist published a book about him, then started getting a paycheck from him soon after. This went largely unremarked upon.

Where was Republican outrage when Bush, Cheney, Bolton, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rove, Libby, Rice and all those intellectual lightweights were lying about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, and Saddam’s foray into Yellow Cake uranium from Niger, Saddam’s complicity with Al Queda in 9/11, and outing a CIA agent for propaganda dividends? Are Republicans truly that disingenuously greasy as to be looking political hay out of Benghazi? Maybe that all that was too long ago and we liberals should forget about it.

Another question is:
Where were the Republican wise men when twenty two bit terrorists came to America and committed a group of massacres like nothing the world has ever seen? Benghazi is in Libya. New York is on the Hudson River.

Military Times Poll: Romney bests Obama, 2-1

Economy, not military issues, tops concerns
By Andrew Tilghman – Staff writer
Posted : Sunday Oct 7, 2012 10:34:55 EDT

The professional core of the U.S. military overwhelmingly favors Mitt Romney over President Obama in the upcoming election — but not because of any particular military issues, according to a new poll of more than 3,100 active and reserve troops.

Respondents rated the economy and the candidates’ character as their most important considerations and all but ignored the war in Afghanistan as an issue of concern.

The Military Times Poll is a secure email survey of active-duty, National Guard and reserve members who are subscribers to the Military Times newspapers (see How We Did It, below).

This population is older and more senior than the military population at large, but it is representative of the professional core of the all-volunteer force.

The 3,100 respondents — roughly two-thirds active-duty and one-third reserve component members — are about 80 percent white and 91 percent male. Forty percent are in paygrades E-5 through E-8, while more than 35 percent are in paygrades O-3 through O-5.

Almost 80 percent of respondents have a college degree — including 27 percent with a graduate degree and more than 11 percent with a post-graduate degree — while an additional 18.5 percent have some college under their belts.

And they are battle-hardened; almost 29 percent have spent more than two cumulative years deployed since 9/11, while a similar percentage has spent one to two cumulative years deployed.

The Military Times poll shows that Republicans continue to enjoy overwhelming support among the military’s professional ranks.

“There is really an affinity for Republican candidates, even though [troops] say that what counts is character and handling the economy,” said Richard Kohn, who teaches military history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Poll results indicate that about 66 percent of those surveyed support Romney, compared with about 26 percent who say they will vote to re-elect President Obama.

When asked about the most important issue guiding their vote this year, about 66 percent of respondents cited either “the economy” or “the character of the candidate.” Less than 16 percent of troops surveyed cited “national security.”

And the war in Afghanistan is barely a blip on the radar: Just more than 1 percent put that conflict at the top of their list of concerns. That’s in stark contrast to troops’ feelings about the war in Iraq in the Military Times 2008 election poll, when 16 percent cited that conflict as their top concern.

“Guess they’re happy to speak for themselves……..”

Indeed. And servicemen, as well as veterans like myself, don’t really care to have others speak for us. We’re perfectly capable of speaking for ourselves.

If you or JKL can establish that 98% figure, then have at it. Otherwise, I — and a lot of other veterans and servicemen — would appreciate it a great deal if you simply let us speak for ourselves.

I would agree with that. This is the weakest (long range) that Hamas has been in a long while and there is a certain desperation at work, I believe. Tenn. GOP congressman’s wife had 2 abortions

By ERIK SCHELZIG

The Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. —

Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais testified during divorce proceedings that he and his former wife made a “mutual” decision for her to have two abortions, according to divorce transcripts released Thursday.

The 2001 court transcripts were released by the state Democratic Party, which had tried to air the documents before the Nov. 6 election. A DesJarlais spokesman didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

DesJarlais easily won a second term despite revelations that he once urged a patient with whom he was having an affair to get an abortion. DesJarlais, whose campaign platform opposed abortion, acknowledged the conversation but said he was only trying to get her to admit she wasn’t pregnant.

The transcripts show that woman testified under oath that she had been pregnant. She declined to elaborate on the outcome of the pregnancy.

On his campaign website, DesJarlais espoused an anti-abortion position, saying: “All life should be cherished and protected. We are pro-life.”

According to DesJarlais’ testimony, the first of his ex-wife Susan’s abortions was because she was taking an experimental drug that carried potential risks in pregnancy. The second came amid problems in their relationship.

“Things were not going well between us and it was a mutual decision,” he said. “I don’t think that it was easy for either one of us. I think it was a very difficult and poor choice and I think that there are probably regrets both ways.”

DesJarlais’ first wife had supported earlier efforts to release the court records, though her attorney said Thursday he hadn’t had time to review them enough to comment.

Your *opinion* is one thing. Claiming that figures you pulled out of your third point of contact are factual is quite another.

“Even a quick poll of African American Soldier’s reveals obama got 0% votes from our section.”

One state would be painful, but don’t think anyone really wants two states.

And Gaza and West Bank can’t be one state, they don’t adjoin each other.

East and West Pakistan tried that. It didn’t work.

If Israel really wanted two states, then they would set up borders and respect them, keeping their citizens out of the West Bank. They don’t do that. Conclusion, they don’t want two states.

Speaking from my personal experience, military personnel especially enlisted generally have no real concern for the INDIVIDUAL who occupies the Oval Office. We are trained from the time we get off the bus to follow the orders of the chain of command. We pretty much concern ourselves with the chain of command up through the local command we are assigned to for a tour… and really the base Commanding Officer is a stretch. It is just too complex of an organization to get caught up in political affiliation, personalities and all of that type of garbage. I had service under multiple Presiedents of both parties. Troops generally press on following the lawful orders of the chain. Being conerned and bent out of shape about who all the figureheads are and crap is BOOTCAMP stuff. You need it to pass inspections and finish Basic. Beyond that, service people are concerned about their FAMILIES, CAREER PATHS, and managing the complexities of daily life as a service member, whether inside or outside of a combat theater…and trying to have a little “fun” in the process.

Some thoughts:

godless: Sad for all involved except for Peaches and The Hussie

d.g.: I heard a comment last week – “He wouldn’t be the first narcissistic 4 star general.” I wouldn’t believe a word Petraeus says. If his judgement is so flawed that he couldn’t resist the temptation to get romantically involved with a predator, then he isn’t fit to lead a den of cub scouts

Blog Goddess:How about when he called himself “A dumbazz” and she said she agreed laughing like it was funny. WOW

There are sooo many reasons that someone would start an affair even though they know what will happen to their lives if they’re caught. One reason can be just simply loneliness. A person is more susceptible to temptation when lonely than at any other time.

Some thoughts on the absurd:

Scout: Hopefully for his own credibility he’ll clear that up but that still won’t clear the Obama administration of attempted cover up or inexcusable incompetence.

No one but you could’ve said something as crazy as that and MEAN it with every fiber in your being. I don’t know whether to be impressed, or scared as hell.

Some thoughts on the profound:

LHU: First cons were apocalyptic that Patraeus had resigned and wasn’t going to testify, speculating that this was conveniently part of a coverup…now that he is testifying they say, ‘ we can’t trust what he says.’ Ya’ll are priceless…

Word!

And the funnies:

Reginald: He might as well have ended the commercial with “I’m Mitt Romney, and I approve this message, because you’re so stupid, you’ll believe it.”

St. Simon: Don’t be deterred by this, cons. Bring the cra-zeee

So in as far as Semitic and Hamitic languages derived from the mother Non-Indo Euopean language, I guess you can say they are related.

alex, sure after we rid ourselves of misogynists, ageists and bigots, we can work on that!

A HUGE win for the Attorney General and we the people. (People are people, my friends.)

BP will plead guilty to manslaughter charges stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and agreed to pay $4.5 billion in government penalties, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday.

Of the penalties, $4 billion will resolve criminal charges. An additional $525 million will be paid to resolve claims brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission that BP lied to investors by understating the amount of oil flowing into the Gulf.

Separate from the corporate manslaughter charges, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging the two highest-ranking BP supervisors on board the Deepwater Horizon on the day of the explosion with 23 criminal counts. The two men were charged with seaman’s manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter for each of the 11 men killed in the blast, as well as a criminal violation of the clean water act.

The grand jury also charged BP’s second-highest ranking representative at the company’s unified command post with hiding information from Congress and allegedly lying to law enforcement officials.

The company also will plead guilty to a felony count of obstruction of Congress, a misdemeanor count under the Clean Water Act and a misdemeanor count under the Migratory Bird Treaty.

Holder said the dollar amount of the penalties and the criminal charges against both the company and individuals are unprecedented.

BP reported a $17.2 billion loss in the quarter when the explosion took place. But it has been profitable since then, booking total profits of $43 billion over the course of the subsequent nine quarters. It will not be able to use the fines to reduce the amount of taxes it owes, Holder said.

BP identified the remaining $1.256 billion of the settlement as a “criminal fine.” More than $1 billion of that fine will go to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, to be available for cleanup — and compensation for those affected by — oil spills in the Gulf .

It is single largest criminal fine on record. The previous record was $1.195 billion criminal fine paid by Pfizer.

“What is Obama’s budget for a major ME conflict?

All unbudgeted means is that the costs were not included in the normal allocation bills passed by Congress. They were paid for by the medium of supplemental spending bills.

And every time the subject of the debt comes up, we are reminded here that Congress controls the purse strings. The President can’t spend a dime without Congressional approval.

Post 9/11, GWB identified an axis of evil that he considered a threat to the safety of America. Iraq was one of them. With the bi-partison support from a Democrat Congress and the American people, Saddam Hussien was removed. Picked the low hanging fruit, but it was a fight that was going to be fought one day or another, as Saddam thumbed his nose at UN sanctions imposed after the first Gulf War.

No desire to beat that old horse again, but President Obama should be glad that he doesn’t have to worry about Saddam Hussein.
