I’m seeing and hearing a lot of this kind of thing, on this blog and elsewhere, as Republicans attempt to come to grips with Tuesday’s election defeat and try to seek explanations for why they lost.
For those unable to watch video, here’s what O’Reilly had to say on Election Night, as it was becoming apparent that it would be a bad night for Republicans:
“The white establishment is now the minority. And the voters, many of them, feel that the economic system is stacked against them and they want stuff. You are going to see a tremendous Hispanic vote for President Obama. Overwhelming black vote for President Obama. And women will probably break President Obama’s way. People feel that they are entitled to things and which candidate, between the two, is going to give them things?”
In one sense, you can understand why that kind of rationalization would be appealing. In effect, O’Reilly is telling his listeners that “We lost by being better than they are. It’s not our fault and there’s nothing we can or should change.” He applies the powerful salve of moral superiority to a open wound, and by doing so he makes people feel better. People like to feel better, so they’ll come back to Fox for more.
But O’Reilly’s wrong. He’s wrong as a matter of politics, he’s wrong as a matter of morality, and he’s wrong as a matter of history. His listeners are equally wrong to believe him. To the degree that they continue to do so, they are likely to experience more tough election nights in the years to come.
Think about it. While older white voters might find O’Reilly’s message reassuring, imagine that you’re black (93 percent for Obama), or Latino-American (71 percent for Obama), or Asian-American (73 percent for Obama). Imagine that you’re flipping through the news coverage on Election Night and you hear O’Reilly make those comments. How do they come across?
They come across as condescending and even racist, because they ARE condescending and racist. The comments equate the fading “white establishment” with all that is good and great in this country, while the rising minority tide is treated as “takers,” as leeches.
It’s not a complicated thing. Hearing that kind of argument, the natural reaction of almost any non-white listener will be to reject the political party from which such sentiments are emanating, regardless of what other affinities you might have with it. Because you and your parents and your cousins and your friends are being insulted.
But is O’Reilly’s formulation nonetheless accurate? Not even close.
To use his term, it was “the white establishment” that created Social Security, and it did so largely for white people, because that’s who dominated this country at the time. It was the white establishment that created Medicare, and it did so largely for white people, because again, that’s who dominated the country at that time. More recently, the white establishment, in the form of President George W. Bush and a Republican Congress, created Medicare Part D.
Who’s on Medicaid, the government-financed health care program that Romney/Ryan proposed to slash? Among the non-elderly, some 43 percent are white, 22 percent are black and 28 percent are Latino. And who’s on food stamps? According to the Census Bureau, 59 percent are white.
And if you really want to get down to it, we can do so.

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan campaigns at The Villages retirement community in Florida, promising to protect "free stuff" for senior citizens.
When Paul Ryan campaigned in the massive Villages retirement community in central Florida this year, promising to restore the $716 billion in “free stuff” that Obama had cut from Medicare, he wasn’t pitching those remarks to retired black school-bus drivers. He was pitching them to white Americans over 65, 61 percent of whom ended up voting for the Romney/Ryan ticket.
Because let’s be blunt. No demographic group in the country gets more “free stuff” from the government than its senior citizens. In fact, seniors make up roughly half of that infamous “47 percent” who pay no federal income taxes. And a lot of them sat there Tuesday night, watching on Fox and shaking their heads in agreement with O’Reilly.
One final point:
The 2012 exit polls offer further evidence to rebut the notion that Obama’s coalition is motivated largely by the demand for “free stuff.”
For example:
– The 65 percent of Americans who believe that illegal immigrants ought to be given a chance to become U.S. citizens voted for Obama by a 24-point margin. These are people drawn to this country by the opportunity to work to make things better for themselves and their children, and the Obama coalition respects them for it.
– The 49 percent of Americans who believe that gay marriage should be legal voted for Obama by a 48-point margin. (The 46 percent who believe it should be banned voted for Romney by a similar margin.) Younger Americans in particular define that as a basic civil right, and voters in four states confirmed that belief Tuesday.
– The 59 percent of Americans who believe that abortion ought to be legal — that such an issue is up to the individual, rather than government bureaucrats — voted for Obama by a 36-point margin.
That’s not “free stuff.” That’s freedom and opportunity, even if the definitions of freedom and opportunity might differ from those of earlier generations of Americans. That’s how it ought to be. Every generation in this country has re-interpreted the American dream in its own way, and nothing is going to stop that process.

I don’t see a reason to believe in any of them. At the same time, we have to have hope and faith in all of them or we doom ourselves to failure. You seem so intent and focused on your disection of Obama that you seem to completely disregard the 535 who work under the Capitol Dome. Nothing against you personally, but when you continuously rail againt one person, it gives you the aroma of partisaned bitterness. If you’re seriously expecting Obama to do all that you claim, you’re looking more for a dictator than a president, and you’ll always be disappointed in the outcome.

We’re approaching the cliff because neither side was willing to adapt the recommndations of the bi-partisan committee, which in short recommended balancing the budget at 21% of GDP by 2035. the balancing came from about 3/4 spending cuts and 1/4 increased tax revenues. An the increased tax revenues came by lowering the rates, broadening the base and cutting the spending (credits and deductions like mortgage interest, retirement and charitable contributions, etc.) in the tax code.

Let’s set the record straight. We don’t pay SS taxes now so that we can have a benefit now. We pay SS taxes now so that someone that is retired now can have a benefit. The money doesn’t go into a lock box for you. It’s a socialist program that happens to be very popular. The demographic shift that is causing problems for the program has been on the radar since the 1960’s. If we would stop with the demagoguery we could resolve the problem now.

I think you will see a different more empowered Obama this time around. The right has tried to beat up the alpha dog and twice have failed. In the coming debacle I see Obama using executive power to pay the bills if necessary. I love how the right thinks this is solely the discretion of the Congress. You have voted these laws in that cost money and if you do not pay them and it is to the detriment of the country the president has the power of executing executive authority.
I think O hesitated last time because he was being trapped by the Tea Party, and really wanted the country to know in its slow learning curve, how the reality of this “do nothing” Congress can damage the country. Now he has proof this kind of gamesmanship by the right will, not could, but will cause damage to the good name of the USA. What FOX and most of us don’t appreciate is Obama is damn near a genius or listens to one anyway. These people don’t make stupid moves and really make their living waiting for the right to make their half dozen a week. Like stealing candy from a baby.

That’s the same kind of pressure I got from working for Republican managers in different corporations.
Turn out highly detailed and extremely accurate work, do it at a frenetic pace, all day, everyday. And of course, watch them go out of the office to play golf several times a week. And, about every two weeks, be called into the manager’s office and told “you’ve just got to start working faster”.
This is the kind of Corporate mentality that currently owns the Republicans. Believe me, one way or another, and despite changing demographics, they will find a way to keep cheating, gouging and lying to the American people.

Do you get that group, women, to vote for you next election by insulting them after this election? Is that the way to win friends and influence people?
Of course, O’Reilly’s job is not to win elections. His job is to win viewers and listeners. And he is really good at it. On the other hand David Plouffe, David Axelrod and Jim Messina’s job is to win elections. And so far they are really good at it. In fact, they may be the best ever.

Jay,
Let them continue living in their own bubble, DENY reality, and when it hits, it is guaranteed these GOP fools will create a new “reality” and try to impose it own us. The sweep of the swing states by O ought to send the message that most Americans are catching on to the right’s foolish fear-mongering. The more they refuse to listen the better the news for the Dems as their base will continue to grow and become larger.
Earlier in the campaign, when the polls showed O up by 5 the cons DENIED reality.
When Romney won the first debate, even the most liberal Dem gave it to him, but when O won the remaining two debates, the cons DENIED reality and either blamed the media or the moderator.
When the jobs report showed unemployment down to 7.8, they DENIED reality.
When polls showed O leading in all swing states, they DENIED reality, and concocted their own poll “reality” to make them feel better.
When polls showed O surging with women and minorities, they DENIED reality, still insisting that Romney will win by a “landslide”. After spending $300M Karl Rove failed to win A SINGLE SENATE seat.
Heck even on election night, when O won Ohio, Rove was DENYING reality live on TV.
Let them continue living in DENIAL.. They will get the rude-awakening when Texas becomes a swing state, and eventually start slowly turning Blue, just like VA. It will be too late for them by then.

My beef is with the WH, congress, lobbyist, the cash providers, defense contractors, unions and all other influence…I’m definitely beefed at the office president and the executive branch for not spending more time on the hill (Clinton was a master and invested geometrically more time working the phones and walking those halls), politicizing issues, taking credit and laying blame..
My beef is with anyone of influence, including the WH in shaping policy that simply mimics the status quo…

This attitude unfortunately permeates among many in the majority. It’s highly offensive as a minority, and is the reason why the Democratic party will continue for generations to be the Party of today’s minority.

TBS, definitely a lot of doubling down. It will be an interesting battle tween the double downers and the moderates for the heart and soul of the party. I hope the moderates win. It would be nice to have a viable 2 party system with real competition on real ideas and not fictions. We need real answers on climate change, infrastructure.
Stevie, amazing. One second you are in dismay about nothing changing in both parties and how you did not vote and the next you are championing Christie.
How absurd.

A young Kenyan mother has named her newborn twin sons after the U.S. president-elect and his defeated Republican challenger.
Millicent Owuor, 20, gave birth to Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on Wednesday at the Siaya District Hospital in southwest Kenya, according to the Standard.

I watched O’Reilly last night for the purpose of seeing how he would handle Dick Morris. Morris just said he was wrong and I had the fantasy that Billy would say “There is wrong and there is being totally out of touch with reality while being arrogant at the same time, sorry but after this election and 2008 I don’t think you should appear on my show”
Like I said that was my fantasy, the reality was Morris said since he elected Clinton he was elite and beyond criticism and Billy added you can “visit Morris at DickMorris, com”

““LAS VEGAS (CBS Las Vegas) — A Las Vegas business owner with 114 employees fired 22 workers today, apparently as a direct result of President Obama’s re-election.
“David” (he asked to remain anonymous for obvious reasons) told Host Kevin Wall on 100.5 KXNT that “elections have consequences” and that “at the end of the day, I need to survive.””
I sure hope David selected his layoff candidates by first making note of any O’bozo stickers on the cars driven by his employees.”
Well, I just hired 500 employess as a direct result of Obama’s re-election. I would like to remain anonymous for obvious reasons.

Agreed. That is why I hope Republican outreach in the minority communities actually gains some traction. Will be good for the Republican party to be more diverse and look more like the overall country’s demographics, as well as a wake up call to Democrats. Democrats at times do take minorities for granted.

Lumping more on BO is accurate as this is a liberal site and I see no value in being part of a gushing mutual admiration society…can you imagine the material Romney would have provided? Both of us would be banging Kyle relentlessly…
We need leaders with stones…they may start intentioned such but the system and a burning desire to become professional permanent politician softens the sack as it were..

Regnad Kcin ,
I will play your game, but I guarantee you will not like my answer. Ready?
This country has become a majority of moochers, looking for a hand out. Look at your party. Their solution to our problem is to take from the rich, and give to the poor. Your leader said it himself a few weeks ago. What was that comment…”you didn’t earn that”.
We have passed the tipping point where there are more folks taking (51%) then producing (49%). It is sad, and I threw in my towel on Tuesday night. If this is the society that you want, then you got it. My question is this, when there is nothing left to give out, what is next?

I think the best was Brett Baier asking Karl Rove why he was so off base and asking if Fox provided him a slow computer…also, miss piggy took Rove to task as well…clealy they were embarassd as should be the case…problem is not that they were wrong…they were unforgivably wrong and are probably discussing proceeding with both relationships..

Well, he that cannot do math, Lead Financial Reporter Lou Dobbs, and panel were just on Fox discussing how the election was just America voting to get free stuff. I used to think they were just cynically using this narrative to sway the weak minded, but now I think they’ve told it so long that they believe it too.
small disclaimer – I’m sure there were people voting for Obama because they thought they’d get free stuff, just like people voting for Romney because they thought Obama was a Muslim – just not most people.

I understand that you object to the plan – grow the economy, then cuts and revenue enhancements – but your reply above does not appear to speak to that at all. Perhaps you need to read the previous post again?
Thanks for your response, though…

KEEP,
Championing Christie? A bit strong…I think…my fantasy of anyone going into congress and in front of the country suggesting they are being stupid (like those not heeding storm warnings)would be worth the taxes we pay…momentarily at least..
We won’t get that from BO or Romney…
Also I did vote but not for either BO or Mitts…for the record anyway…the weed guy got my vote..

I seldom have time lately to stay on these threads but occassionally drop in to kick the ant hill.
I would have been on sooner after the election but was traveling.
I predicted Romney by a landslide; obviously wrong there. In fact, the election was an F’n disaster for Republicans.
It is however too early to know why. Libs like Jay think they know why, and they could be correct, but for me I will take a while to decide for myself.
It is true, no matter what Jay and his fellow Lefties state, the Democratic Party is where people turn when they want free stuff. You can believe they deserve the free stuff; that’s your choice, but you can’t deny Dems is where to find it.
My biggest question is, what am I going to do with all these crying towels I had lined up for you guys?
