I’m seeing and hearing a lot of this kind of thing, on this blog and elsewhere, as Republicans attempt to come to grips with Tuesday’s election defeat and try to seek explanations for why they lost.
For those unable to watch video, here’s what O’Reilly had to say on Election Night, as it was becoming apparent that it would be a bad night for Republicans:
“The white establishment is now the minority. And the voters, many of them, feel that the economic system is stacked against them and they want stuff. You are going to see a tremendous Hispanic vote for President Obama. Overwhelming black vote for President Obama. And women will probably break President Obama’s way. People feel that they are entitled to things and which candidate, between the two, is going to give them things?”
In one sense, you can understand why that kind of rationalization would be appealing. In effect, O’Reilly is telling his listeners that “We lost by being better than they are. It’s not our fault and there’s nothing we can or should change.” He applies the powerful salve of moral superiority to a open wound, and by doing so he makes people feel better. People like to feel better, so they’ll come back to Fox for more.
But O’Reilly’s wrong. He’s wrong as a matter of politics, he’s wrong as a matter of morality, and he’s wrong as a matter of history. His listeners are equally wrong to believe him. To the degree that they continue to do so, they are likely to experience more tough election nights in the years to come.
Think about it. While older white voters might find O’Reilly’s message reassuring, imagine that you’re black (93 percent for Obama), or Latino-American (71 percent for Obama), or Asian-American (73 percent for Obama). Imagine that you’re flipping through the news coverage on Election Night and you hear O’Reilly make those comments. How do they come across?
They come across as condescending and even racist, because they ARE condescending and racist. The comments equate the fading “white establishment” with all that is good and great in this country, while the rising minority tide is treated as “takers,” as leeches.
It’s not a complicated thing. Hearing that kind of argument, the natural reaction of almost any non-white listener will be to reject the political party from which such sentiments are emanating, regardless of what other affinities you might have with it. Because you and your parents and your cousins and your friends are being insulted.
But is O’Reilly’s formulation nonetheless accurate? Not even close.
To use his term, it was “the white establishment” that created Social Security, and it did so largely for white people, because that’s who dominated this country at the time. It was the white establishment that created Medicare, and it did so largely for white people, because again, that’s who dominated the country at that time. More recently, the white establishment, in the form of President George W. Bush and a Republican Congress, created Medicare Part D.
Who’s on Medicaid, the government-financed health care program that Romney/Ryan proposed to slash? Among the non-elderly, some 43 percent are white, 22 percent are black and 28 percent are Latino. And who’s on food stamps? According to the Census Bureau, 59 percent are white.
And if you really want to get down to it, we can do so.

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan campaigns at The Villages retirement community in Florida, promising to protect "free stuff" for senior citizens.
When Paul Ryan campaigned in the massive Villages retirement community in central Florida this year, promising to restore the $716 billion in “free stuff” that Obama had cut from Medicare, he wasn’t pitching those remarks to retired black school-bus drivers. He was pitching them to white Americans over 65, 61 percent of whom ended up voting for the Romney/Ryan ticket.
Because let’s be blunt. No demographic group in the country gets more “free stuff” from the government than its senior citizens. In fact, seniors make up roughly half of that infamous “47 percent” who pay no federal income taxes. And a lot of them sat there Tuesday night, watching on Fox and shaking their heads in agreement with O’Reilly.
One final point:
The 2012 exit polls offer further evidence to rebut the notion that Obama’s coalition is motivated largely by the demand for “free stuff.”
For example:
– The 65 percent of Americans who believe that illegal immigrants ought to be given a chance to become U.S. citizens voted for Obama by a 24-point margin. These are people drawn to this country by the opportunity to work to make things better for themselves and their children, and the Obama coalition respects them for it.
– The 49 percent of Americans who believe that gay marriage should be legal voted for Obama by a 48-point margin. (The 46 percent who believe it should be banned voted for Romney by a similar margin.) Younger Americans in particular define that as a basic civil right, and voters in four states confirmed that belief Tuesday.
– The 59 percent of Americans who believe that abortion ought to be legal — that such an issue is up to the individual, rather than government bureaucrats — voted for Obama by a 36-point margin.
That’s not “free stuff.” That’s freedom and opportunity, even if the definitions of freedom and opportunity might differ from those of earlier generations of Americans. That’s how it ought to be. Every generation in this country has re-interpreted the American dream in its own way, and nothing is going to stop that process.

We’re already headed in that direction. I joke around with Canadians in that the only difference between them and us are the passports. It’s come about as a business necessity as many of our domestic companies have expanded to Mexico and Canada. There has to be almost seamless transfer of goods and persons between the borders to meet the demands of our just-in-time business models.

I have noticed that Seattle has a very laid back attitude. You might be on to something there. Right now, they don’t do the international traffic that Hartsfield does, but when the logistics are figured out on how to enact the new laws, I can see Seattle becoming a lighter version of Amsterdam.

Yep it is the good old white guy’s fault. I have watched in my life as the Government has taken over the lives of primarily the black community and what have I seen. Destruction of the black family, pushed them into living in government subsidixed housing, made them dependent on the government for food etc. It has spilled over into the hispanic community and even , wow, the white community. When you have almost 50% of the population owing their means of living to government handouts, something is amiss. I have yet to hear the NAACP, any black congress person argue for support to bring the black, hispanic and now the white community back into self respect, self dependency and self respect. I look after some catastrophic even fire, wind etc, and I see people of all races and classes yelling into the microphone about “The Governemnt” should make them whole again. nothing about we can do this together and all jumping in helping each other weather the storm – so to speak. Blame the GOP, blame Bush, blame anyone you want but it sure is sad that the leaders, black white, red, pink etc push government dependency and keeps people on the rat infested plantation. Sad, Jay, very sad.

Jeremiah Wright coined it perfect. G**damn America! I don’t care anymore. Screw this country. It deserves everything it gets as it gradually picks up speed in it’s spiraling decent into obscurity. Know who’s a “taker?” Nathan Deal. Saxby Chambliss is another one. They’re doing very well for themselves and their friends and families. I think that’s because they live on the gubmint payroll year after year, taking our tax money, but yet, their personal bank accounts (and those of their family and friends) are getting HUUUUUUUGE. Nice business model they have going for themselves.
Wanna be a “taker” too? Get elected to an important public office in Georgia. You’ll have more friends shoving favors at you than you can process on your own, so you’ll have to put your family to work juggling it around for you. Sure, you’ll offer a few government favors — our tax dollars and interests — in return, but that’s what makes this country GREAT!
Of course, to be a “taker” in Georgia, you’ll have to become a Republican first. Democrats and working folks need not apply.

They’ve been doing that for YEARS; not just last night. Their whole platform is “us” against “THEM”. THEY, those takers, don’t want to work — its really funny though that every time, on television, they show those long lines at Job Fairs, there are a whole lot of brown people in them that “don’t want to work”.
But O’Reilly’s wrong. He’s wrong as a matter of politics, he’s wrong as a matter of morality, and he’s wrong as a matter of history. His listeners are equally wrong to believe him. To the degree that they continue to do so, they are likely to experience more tough election nights
Dudley, when I first met him, was a virulent, flag waving, Republican — what turned him to the Independent Party was the rhetoric coming out of his former party. They’re against gays and gay marriage, his sister is gay and married to her partner. They’re against the “brown people”, his wife, his inlaws, niece and nephew are brown. Dudley’s world changed, and with that change his worldview and attitude changed. His reality changed.
Republicans have painted themselves into a corner. If they end up stuck there, that’s THEIR problem.

The GOP is in deep trouble, their main support is in the Deep South, not exactly a poster child for success themselves and they can’t see the playing field being so far away from it. The Latino vote that they practically locked the door on this year is growing by double digits every election. Another thing that is happening for the first time in America, those “liberal” young voters, unlike their parents and generation before them, are staying “liberal” now in their late 30s with the new generation in their 20s adding to the numbers coming into voting age.
One of the problems with the right is anything in the middle is described as liberal instead of moderate. Newt even goes as far as calling it socialism to add a little more spin. You cannot insult your way to a presidency or scare your women voters or Latino voters, and then like an abusive husband ask for forgiveness. This will be the closest the GOP ever comes to an election and it was a 2 billion dollar loss. Look how much money your boy Murdock made off your mystery. Don’t you fools ever get tired of being played?

According to the logic of some Americans. It’s an entitlement that deserves to be cut. Nevermind the fact that you’ve paid your hard earned money into that “entitement” over the entire course of your working life. That’s why I despise the term “entitlement” altogether when people talk politics. It’s pure bullsh*t to call something an entitlement when you’ve busted your ass and paid into it the entire time you’ve been working, and that goes double for business owners who have to pay both parts for themselves.

Obama re-election protest escalates at Univ. of Mississippi; racial slurs, 2 arrests reported
JACKSON, Miss. — A protest at the University of Mississippi against the re-election of President Barack Obama grew into crowd of about 400 people with shouted racial slurs as rumors of a riot spread on social media. Two people were arrested on minor charges.
The university said in a statement Wednesday that the gathering at the student union began late Tuesday night with about 30 to 40 students, but grew within 20 minutes as word spread. Some students chanted political slogans while others used derogatory racial statements and profanity, the statement said.

you do miss that “illegals” are takers in a way, as they are not paying into the system (income taxes) yet take services; this is not to say that many do not work and work hard and at tough jobs. if you had any backbone you would state that people that have ability to work but have just chosen to stay on the public dole are “takers”. i don’t know how anyone would ever disagree. well anyone but the taker.
lastly you did miss the part that the Dem spin machine falsely stated that the clock would roll back and all latinos would be thrown out and slavery would return. what a crock that was spun. and too many bought the lie. the last Repub was Bush Jr. and i don’t recall a decline in latino population or a concerted effort to remove legal latinos AND i don’t recall slavery during those eight years…

In the future, when historians determine the date when the United States went over the cliff into chaos and oblivion, that date will be November 6, 2012, the day the deadbeats and morons took over the country.

By the way, in the interest of full disclosure, I should admit that the electoral model that I bragged about back in September — http://blogs.ajc.com/jay-bookman-blog/2012/09/28/heres-the-math-behind-the-2012-presidential-race — proved to be badly out of whack and will have to be adjusted in future presidential cycles.
My model predicted an Obama win with 331.014 electoral votes. If and when they finally give him Florida, he’ll have 332 EVs, which means that I was off by 0.986 votes. I’m going to have go back, take the model apart and figure out where I went wrong.

a pittance? it will support you from your mid-60s through the rest of your life – it’s cost-adjusted (401Ks are not) plus, if you die young, will provide benefits for your children. It’s meant to be a SUPPLEMENT to your retirement, not your entire living.
It’s robbery for the people that work their entire lives. And if you die young after your children are grown the balance does not go into your estate, it’s just gone.
NTL, not a “freebie”.

Joe Hussein Mama: (posted below, but appropriate for this thread as well)
Fair enough. If our Leaders (Democrat & Republican) approach the discussion in the way that you and I just did, there’s a possibility of getting to some resolution.
I’ve got no problem with a property owner (in our case, the U.S. Government) negotiating the royalties it receives from resources that are produced from its land. Frankly, its good business sense because both parties only benefit with the recovery. The alternative (in places like off our Gulf Coast) is simply that other interests tap the same reserves in international waters and we get nothing.
Likewise, implementing policies that promote economic growth leads to year-over-year increases in tax revenues as evidenced by both historical figures from both Kennedy, Reagan, & Clinton.
We disagree on a lot. The current logger-head results from a lack of trust.
In my opinion, American Taxpayers have been lied to in every “budget compromise” in history. Tax increases occur immediately while spending cuts are either “reductions in rates of growth” (aka less of an increase than planned) or ignored altogether (because the recipients of the program / benefit / transfer payment “need” it). Speaking as an individual, I have no interest in another “compromise” that confiscates what I earn, but releases the beneficiaries from their end of the agreement.
The onus is not on America’s Taxpayers; we have done our job. It is up to the beneficiaries of programs, benefits, and transfer payments to accept the responsibility for their own lives and quit expecting others to do for them what they should do for themselves.
If they are willing to work in cooperation to resolve the mess that we are currently in, great – let’s work.
We shall see.

Your response was telling…can you explain to me further exactly how those particular comments are racist and how in the verbiage they are directly solely to hispanics and the like?
You above all others should be careful in the use of the term racist…love to see you go on his program and debate his racists ways..
I thought the definition included an amount of control over the subject class as opposed to bigotry..
Pick an appropriate label…your complete mis use of the word is surprising from a professional writer..do you view his comments as animosity or percpetion that one class is better than the others?
You can do better..

“We disagree on a lot. The current logger-head results from a lack of trust.”
As I’ve said repeatedly (despite the refusal of some of our con regulars to believe it), I voted Republican for 20+ years of my adult life. I’m *not* insensitive to the conservative position, nor am I ignorant of it.
That said, I’m willing to accept pain in the negotiations to get our national debt under control so long as it’s spread around and both sides show their cards. It’s clear that the Grover Norquist ‘no taxes EVAR’ approach isn’t working and won’t start to, either. So IMO, we need to get both sides serious about the problem.
“If they are willing to work in cooperation to resolve the mess that we are currently in, great – let’s work.”
