Conservative media betrayed, failed its audience

1352270481481.png.CROP.article568-large-1

There’s truth being told in conservative circles today, for those who are willing to hear it.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, for example, appears to be throwing his support behind the so-called DREAM Act, which would allow young immigrants brought here illegally as children to attend college and earn citizenship:

“In the next Congress, I am committed to working on upward mobility policies that will ensure people who work hard and play by the rules can rise above the circumstances of their birth and leave their children better off. The conservative movement should have particular appeal to people in minority and immigrant communities who are trying to make it, and Republicans need to work harder than ever to communicate our beliefs to them.”

And Conor Friedersdorf, writing in The Atlantic, asks why so many of his conservative colleagues were shocked and surprised last night, given that the outcome had been predicted for weeks by polls and expert analysis.

His conclusion: Because under the business model employed by the right-wing media at Fox News and elsewhere, it is more profitable to tell conservatives what they want to hear, not what they need to hear.

“But guess what?” he asks his fellow conservatives.

You haven’t just been misinformed about the horse race. Since the very beginning of the election cycle, conservative media has been failing you. With a few exceptions, they haven’t tried to rigorously tell you the truth, or even to bring you intellectually honest opinion. What they’ve done instead helps to explain why the right failed to triumph in a very winnable election.

Why do you keep putting up with it?

Conservatives were at a disadvantage because Romney supporters like Jennifer Rubin and Hugh Hewitt saw it as their duty to spin constantly for their favored candidate rather than being frank about his strengths and weaknesses. What conservative Washington Post readers got, when they traded in Dave Weigel for Rubin, was a lot more hackery and a lot less informed about the presidential election.

Conservatives were at an information disadvantage because so many right-leaning outlets wasted time on stories the rest of America dismissed as nonsense. WorldNetDaily brought you birtherism. Forbes brought you Kenyan anti-colonialism. National Review obsessed about an imaginary rejection of American exceptionalism, misrepresenting an Obama quote in the process, and Andy McCarthy was interviewed widely about his theory that Obama, aka the Drone Warrior in Chief, allied himself with our Islamist enemies in a “Grand Jihad” against America. Seriously?

Conservatives were at a disadvantage because their information elites pandered in the most cynical, self-defeating ways, treating would-be candidates like Sarah Palin and Herman Cain as if they were plausible presidents rather than national jokes who’d lose worse than George McGovern.

How many months were wasted on them?

How many hours of Glenn Beck conspiracy theories did Fox News broadcast to its viewers? How many hours of transparently mindless Sean Hannity content is still broadcast daily? Why don’t Americans trust Republicans on foreign policy as they once did? In part because conservatism hasn’t grappled with the foreign-policy failures of George W. Bush. A conspiracy of silence surrounds the subject. Romney could neither run on the man’s record nor repudiate it.

The most damaging Romney gaffe of the campaign, where he talked about how the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes are a lost cause for Republicans? Either he was unaware that many of those people are Republican voters, or was pandering to GOP donors who are misinformed. Either way, bad information within the conservative movement was to blame.”

The piece gets stronger from there, including language I’m not allowed to publish on this blog. If you’re a conservative seriously concerned about your movement’s future, I highly recommend it. Because if you don’t get this part right, you cannot get the rest of it right.

It’s telling that the GOP’ers complain about the “mainstream media,” when Rupert Murdoch owns Fox News, Fox Financial News, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post. At least they admit that the stories, as reported by these sources, are not “mainstream” but out in right field. GOP – eject the tinfoil hatted among your ranks and provide some real alternatives, or just go away.

You folks are giving the American electorate way too much credit for weighing the issues like you folks do. Some people do have a political philosophy and follow the campaign positions carefully, but a very large percentage of people (be interested to know how big) treat the election like American Idol. They vote for who feels right or which candidate they connect with on a personal level. It has very little to do with philosophies of socialism or capitalism or even social issues. Social media exacerbates this phenomenon, by the way. So it’s interesting to debate why Obama won, but in the end it’s because voters liked him better. It’s the same reason Bush won twice, Clinton won twice, and GH Bush won only once (over Dukakis mind you). So whoever said Bush was the last Republican president, I don’t buy that. There will be another one when one comes along who can connect to people.

For America’s sake, I hope Obama is successful and I will pray that he is. (BTW, I’m a social and fiscal conservative…just for truth in advertising purposes). Peace.

No one is perfect but I was right on the dot.com bubble and right on the real estate bubble and will soon prove to be right on the gub’ment financially, propped up, health care bubble. And as for the finale (really) we have the most massive bubble of all time – the bond market bubble created and destroyed by this huge Fed debt and the nearing fiscal cliff. You better start praying ’cause Obama and the Fed gub’ment ain’t going to save you. Be careful what you ask for…. you got it and in a short while you will be blaming some one else but who is at fault? The voters that put these PARTY LOYALISTS in office.

6 Reasons Why GOP do not appeal to a majority of modern Americans:

1. Focus on outdated social issues (gay marriage, etc.)

2. General disdain for immigrants and minorities (just read some of the posts on this site!)

3. Overt religiosity (not everybody is an Evangelical Christian)

4. Allegiance to the very rich over the middle/working classes (just coz they’re rich, doesn’t make them good)

5. Lack of climate concern (our Earth is dying, people! Wake up on this issue!)

6. General Bellicosity (pro-guns, pro-war, pro-death penalty)

America isn’t going to go backwards. It has been trending toward a TRUE melting pot for decades, and is getting more liberal to boot. GOP needs to change or fade away. Fiscal conservatism and smaller government is a good thing across all society, but the socially conservative baggage that comes along with this economic policy is ugly and distasteful.

Dream on… 2014? Many times I have seen the doom of this party or that party predicted. By 2014 you will be very unhappy with Obama and his PARTY LOYALISTS. I am looking for a 3rd party to arise – one that puts the economic future of the U.S. ahead of party loyalty. For you see – I did not vote for Obama or “W” – I am a common sense fiscal conservative that wants to limit the size and reach of the Fed gub’ment and reduce the size of the Fed debt… neither party is the answer at this time. They are both LOYAL to their party 1st and U.S. last. Gub’ment “stimulus” is just pay offs and kick backs to 0party LOYALISTS. $6,000,000,000,000 + in 4 years and what did we get for it? A flat economy at best and a looming Fed debt fiscal cliff disaster.

People who vote republican are happy witrh the status quo. This election showed that most people are NOT happy with the way things are now and want things to CHANGE. When the republicans learn we must care about each other and not have to compete for basic human necesssities such as a living wage and really affordable (or free) healthcare, then they might begin to represent the interest of the majority of Americans.

D. DoRight — “Michael Steele tried to make the GOP more inclusive when he took over in 2008 — they kicked him out.”

FWIW, I was still working in Washington when J. C. Watts announced that he was retiring for Congress. I haven’t bothered to look it up, but there was a piece in the Washington Post around that time in which he indicated that he felt that the GOP was treating him like a token and taking him for granted — that they’d call him up when they needed a nonwhite face at a photo op, but when he or his district needed something, the party’s power brokers didn’t respond to him.

I gathered from the article that the last straw for Watts came when GOP leaders decided to withdraw their support for some defense project having to do with his district and he only found out about it by reading the paper.

I think you’re right; inclusion doesn’t come easy for them.

The politicians from both parties pay lip service to the looming deficit crises but that’s a serious issue our government needs to face. Charles Krauthammer defines a mandate after Bush’s win in 2004. (Keep in mind that he says Obama doesn’t have one after last night)

I think it was a huge issue that the president was weak in his first term. He had less of the power and strength and capital, as he speaks of, than he does today. And now that he’s been elected with a large majority, or a significant majority, and with a mandate, I think part of that mandate is to get the right judges, by his likes.”

Bush won with 286 electoral votes to John Kerry’s 252, and with a 2.4 percent margin in the popular vote. Obama currently has 303 electoral votes to Romney’s 206, and he’s likely to add to that the 29 votes from Florida, which hasn’t been called yet, for a grand total of 332. It’s to early to tell on the popular vote, but it will be between 2 and 3 percent.

Herman Cain was a SERIOUS candidate for the Republican Party nomination. If he had won the Republican nomination, and that was clearly possible, I GUARANTEE you he would have carried the South, Mid-west and all other typcially Red states. Even poor, alone Indiana. I can equally GUARANTEE you Herman Cain would not have carried California, New York or any of the other BLUE states.

And, the ultimate denial will be when the conservatives conclude that the reason they lost was because Romney wasn’t conservative enough.

Republicans were repudiated because they allowed the Tea Party to take them to the right of Atilla the Hun causing many life-long Republicans, like my wife who had voted Republican since 1964, to bail on the party.

So Right They Ain’t Right. . . .

@ Steve:I’m good with predictions: #1 I hope your right , as for cause of
…..#2, Doubt it, as Harry Reed is even worse of a leader than Pelosi and he will overplay his hand and as #1 occurs, the country will Look for continued prosperity and begin to indulge itself and start another bubble….THAT is the cycle that countries go thru since the days of the dutch……

@debbie.., you think we might have standards, well thank you and I’ll have a snack cake, please.

In the VAST MAJORITY of the Republican Party, it does not matter about race among many, many, many Southern whites. What matters is policy – what matters is political philosophy. If Barry O is lily-white, he does not carry the South. Own it…

Isn’t that the gist of Jay’s topic? The VAST MAJORITY of the Republican Party appears to reside within an echo chamber and feels that most of America thinks as they do when, in reality, national elections have shown otherwise. The left has it’s own echo chamber members as well, but their soapbox pales in comparison when compared to the size of the right’s soapbox.

“Morality” — “You failed ONCE AGAIN to answer my question….. show me where I predicted the election.”

I didn’t fail. I’m just not taking orders from you.

“You accused me of something I did not do.”

If talking bullspit is so upsetting to you, then you should pipe down.

“If you knew what I know you wouldn’t be so calm.”

Either spill it or take a hike.

“I love this country”

I think you’re dangerously unbalanced and I don’t think you have any valuable super-SEEKRIT knowledge at all.

“and I am not selling it out for the Dems or the Repubs like Obama did. Obama is a PARTY LOYALIST 1st. He is not loyal to the economic future of the USA.”

And the cow jumped over the moon. Have another Xanax and calm the eff down.

But I think some good people will run

I’m not sure Chris Christie is one of them though

If he had won the Republican nomination, and that was clearly possible

HA! You’re probably right. Judging from your party’s past candidates, you guys would’ve voted for a 3 legged dog if it could repeat the pledge of allegiance, wear a flag pin, and say “Damn Obama!!”" while drinking a beer.

Thank you. :)

Mandate? Obama and the Dems could care less about a mandate. They are PARTY LOYALISTS not voter LOYALISTS. There will be no change ……. Hairy Weed said before the election that the Dems would not cooperate or compromise with a Repbub Prez. That is no surprise. Grid lock will continue as we near the fiscal cliff.

Spot on about absurd and predictably crap ACA…worst scenario was for government to jump in bed with insurers and large providers…What a formula? As I’ve mentioned, the insurer advised Pelosi that implementation of Pelosi-Care would drive the price of current insured family by $15-20k per year…that’s on top of current premium…she threatened exception to anti-trust so they went away..

I can guarantee you that the “efficiency savings” projected by squeezing doctors and the like will not materialize as they will further reduce an already shrinking supply of docs..

At least with single payer (which will have it’s own problems….like, say…a trajectory of trillions of unfunded (like Medicare and SS…$70 trillion), they don’t share blankets with in order to allow scummy campaign cash from changing hands..

And Bush spoke of his “mandate” then.

Why yes, he did. Let’s not forget the infamous “I’ve got political capital, and I’m going to spend it”, uttered just prior to his swan-dive into a pile of bricks (a.k.a. the Social Security Piratization Tour.)

I’m thinking Mark Warner of Virginia. Former popular governor, current popular Senator, self-made millionaire.

Maybe not a candidate in ‘16, but a man to watch, IMO.
