There’s truth being told in conservative circles today, for those who are willing to hear it.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, for example, appears to be throwing his support behind the so-called DREAM Act, which would allow young immigrants brought here illegally as children to attend college and earn citizenship:
“In the next Congress, I am committed to working on upward mobility policies that will ensure people who work hard and play by the rules can rise above the circumstances of their birth and leave their children better off. The conservative movement should have particular appeal to people in minority and immigrant communities who are trying to make it, and Republicans need to work harder than ever to communicate our beliefs to them.”
And Conor Friedersdorf, writing in The Atlantic, asks why so many of his conservative colleagues were shocked and surprised last night, given that the outcome had been predicted for weeks by polls and expert analysis.
His conclusion: Because under the business model employed by the right-wing media at Fox News and elsewhere, it is more profitable to tell conservatives what they want to hear, not what they need to hear.
“But guess what?” he asks his fellow conservatives.
You haven’t just been misinformed about the horse race. Since the very beginning of the election cycle, conservative media has been failing you. With a few exceptions, they haven’t tried to rigorously tell you the truth, or even to bring you intellectually honest opinion. What they’ve done instead helps to explain why the right failed to triumph in a very winnable election.
Why do you keep putting up with it?
Conservatives were at a disadvantage because Romney supporters like Jennifer Rubin and Hugh Hewitt saw it as their duty to spin constantly for their favored candidate rather than being frank about his strengths and weaknesses. What conservative Washington Post readers got, when they traded in Dave Weigel for Rubin, was a lot more hackery and a lot less informed about the presidential election.
Conservatives were at an information disadvantage because so many right-leaning outlets wasted time on stories the rest of America dismissed as nonsense. WorldNetDaily brought you birtherism. Forbes brought you Kenyan anti-colonialism. National Review obsessed about an imaginary rejection of American exceptionalism, misrepresenting an Obama quote in the process, and Andy McCarthy was interviewed widely about his theory that Obama, aka the Drone Warrior in Chief, allied himself with our Islamist enemies in a “Grand Jihad” against America. Seriously?
Conservatives were at a disadvantage because their information elites pandered in the most cynical, self-defeating ways, treating would-be candidates like Sarah Palin and Herman Cain as if they were plausible presidents rather than national jokes who’d lose worse than George McGovern.
How many months were wasted on them?
How many hours of Glenn Beck conspiracy theories did Fox News broadcast to its viewers? How many hours of transparently mindless Sean Hannity content is still broadcast daily? Why don’t Americans trust Republicans on foreign policy as they once did? In part because conservatism hasn’t grappled with the foreign-policy failures of George W. Bush. A conspiracy of silence surrounds the subject. Romney could neither run on the man’s record nor repudiate it.
The most damaging Romney gaffe of the campaign, where he talked about how the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes are a lost cause for Republicans? Either he was unaware that many of those people are Republican voters, or was pandering to GOP donors who are misinformed. Either way, bad information within the conservative movement was to blame.”
The piece gets stronger from there, including language I’m not allowed to publish on this blog. If you’re a conservative seriously concerned about your movement’s future, I highly recommend it. Because if you don’t get this part right, you cannot get the rest of it right.

Here’s a new idea to help the R party – ask your constituents what they want; find out about their values, hopes, and dreams.
And then go represent them.
The current strategy of saying “here’s what we stand for, and if you don’t like it, $crew you!”, and then complaining about how stupid people are, is not suddenly going to change into a winning strategy, know what I mean?

It is sad, but….
The hard right wing republicans will not change no matter what. They are heavily funded by some of the most wealthy. They will continue their FOX news and their radio programs. They will continue to spout their hatred politics (of minorities, of the working class, of women, etc.).
Nothing will change that.
The best we can hope for is a tad of realism in the republicans with an ounce of sense to try to work towards the middle and meet President Obama to save this Country.
Otherwise, the hard right wing republicans will be happy to push the US over the cliff.
Aren’t they sort of like a terrorist group?

Many of us liberals and centerists here repeadly observed that the Republican Party had been taken over by extreme right-wing fundamentalists. We further noted, especially those of us with first hand experience, that fundamentalists are extremely narrow minded and will NOT tolerate even the slightest dissent. So, expecting any intellectually honest opinions from the right-wing media and other hack pundits was on par with expecting to win the lottery.
Once people with this mindset get in control of anything, be it a denomination or political party, unseating them from power is a battle to the finish.
The Republicans have brought this old Chineese curse on themselves – “May you live in interesting times”

“The pitiful part is because of Osama Hussein Obama’s (All these Muslims look alike) Affordable Health Care, I’ve got to fire 174 people and put another 112 on part time pay or I lose the business that I spent 22 years building.”
Meet Thulsa Doom, one of our posters. He’s a health insurance salesman. He mostly deals with Medicare supplement policies, but I bet he can help you find an agent that can put together an acceptable package for your workers that won’t break the bank.
“22 years battling the fukn government every step of the way. Nice Christmas present for these employees, right?”
Guess you should have supported Single-Payer, which was what Democrats brought to the table in the first place. If that had passed, you wouldn’t have had to worry about offering health insurance ever again. Instead, what you got was a Republican idea from the 1990s called the Individual Mandate. So if you have a problem with the ACA, your gripe belongs with the Republicans. They didn’t like our idea, so we used theirs.
Guess you didn’t know that.

In stead of spending money on hand and expanding and adding jobs uncertainty and distrust of Obama will cause them to hold their cards close and hunker down for the oncoming fiscal cliff and economic disaster. You won’t find a job any time soon so blame yourself for voting Obama.

I am mostly a fan of Fox News but I do think that Hannity is an idiot and as dishonest and over-the-top as anyone on MSNBC. I wish Fox News would jettison him. But I think most in conservative media were sincere in not trusting polls which seemed to over-sample Democrats. Democrats went after Gallup when Gallup was showing numbers very favorable to Republicans.
Best I can tell, the reason Romney lost by as much as he did was not that Democratic turnout was so much stronger than anticipated, it’s that Republican turnout was weaker than many conservatives anticipated.
Also, Sandy definitely helped Obama, probably by 2 points in the spread if not more. That was luck of the draw. As well, had the msm been reporting the economic news the same as they would be had a Republican been in office, then I don’t think Obama could have won. Additionally, CBS News sitting on that interview footage with Obama until a couple of days before election when nobody was interested anymore was just unbelievable and possibly the most agregious example of liberal msm bias since CBS News tried to take out Bush in 2004 with those forged documents.
Nate Silver’s critics, of which I was one, were wrong, 100% wrong. But what Nate Silver showed was that the overall polling was really not oversampling Democrats and that the average of the overall polls was pretty much right on the money. We’re told that being able to poll accurately has never been more difficult due to only one 1 of 9 people even bothering to answer the phone call anymore, yet it would appear that the polling has seldom been more accurate than it was for this election. Maybe that was just luck, but I doubt it. They did a great job.
A couple of months ago, I was one who thought that the election would trend to Romney and that he would win by 3 – 5 points. I relied on my instincts and reading of past history which had consistently in the past out-performed conventional wisdom. But boy was I wrong this time around. I’m humbled by how wrong I was.
Congratulations to President Obama and his supporters. I thought Obama was a mostly terrible president his first 4 years and that he was the one most responsible for the partison divide. But I hope he ends up being a great president the 2nd time around. If he’s not, then the country is in a lot of trouble.

Breaking from Newsmax.com
Three GOP Phone Calls Obama Should Make Today
By Lanny Davis
I have some advice for President Obama. Here it is.
Mr. President, you should make three phone calls — as soon as you and your team finish celebrating, with justification, having run a great victory. These three calls should be made to three conservative Republican senators who care about the country and who want to solve problems more than winning ideological wars.
They are Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.
These three men should be invited to the White House … and Mr. President, you should say something like:
“What would it take to win your support — and that of other Republican conservative senators and House members — to do the Grand Bargain to pay down our $16 trillion debt?
“Will you join me in endorsing Simpson-Bowles?
“In finding a centrist immigration reform solution?
“To reform the tax code?
“Tell me — I want to find a compromise. Help me. Let’s work together.”
This is the Barack Obama of the 2008 campaign — the keynote speaker in 2004 — running for history, not for re-election.
If our president can do this, or something like this, there is a chance we can once again be a “purple nation” — not a polarized “red” and “blue” state nation.
President Obama can then find a broad center-left and center-right bipartisan majority Congress and actually start to solve the problems facing our country.

To rephrase what I have posted in the past, countries are like people – they have a life cycle.
The country has changed, the electorate has changed, the way we govern has changed and the result does not bode well for this Republic. I believe we will unfortunately go the way of socialist Europe with all of the ramifications thereof and the world will no longer have a policemen in the night.
My only regret is that it happened on my watch.
We hand this nation over to a new generation and history will judge if you have the wisdom and courage of past generations.

Sounds like Lanny Davis is spot on, as for the premace of Jay-NO KIDDING, people watch and talk and hang out with people who reflect their own biases, No kidding…Challenging people (like giving Kamchek a bath) is uncomfortable- NO KIDDING, where’s Dr. Phil and Psych 101 at Penn State…. In MY book, people are responsible to acuire as broad a source of info as they can get, if they want only Fox they should expect Right wing diatribes, if they watch Mathews they will get left wing garbage. If you’re too stupid to know that or too young or too insecure then it’s YOUR fault, as someone blogged:look in the mirror (and NOW Kamchack-take a bath)

I’ve been saying this since the summer of last year:
If the Republican candidate doesn’t give us *affirmative,* positive reasons to vote for him — instead of simply complaints and reasons to vote *against* President Obama, then the 2012 election is going to be 2004 all over again, but with the political parties reversed.
And that’s what we got.
An incumbent President with a middling record and a restive electorate.
An opposition candidate of some distinction, but who is otherwise unremarkable, backed by a strident and vocal core of supporters
And a close win for the incumbent.
On to 2016, cons. Maybe next time you’ll listen. But I doubt it. If you listened, you might not be cons.

Pick up some NOK Nokia, maybe some Silver Wheaton SLW, and any other sector stock that has been UN-rationally beaten down today.
You do know there will be a Santa Claus rally coming later in December correct ?

Well, I don’t blame the media for the bad info I got. I blame the Richard Heads on this blog that kept telling me Obama was going to get blowed out like a bad tire on a gravel road. That’s why I got ready to sellabrate and set there with old Ace just waiting for the announcer to say Romney was elected with about 400 electoral votes. You can just imagine what it did to my insides when the bad news started coming in. I like to of went right in my easy chair. I think a few of these bloggers ought to get the Death Penalty at least.
Anyhow, I’ll never beleive anything these people write again. If they told me the sun was shining I’d need to stick my head outside to make sure they wasn’t just seeing a flashlight.
Have a good p.m. everybody.

Gotta love Harry Reid, he knows how to start off the spirit of cooperation. Claims he has a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy; do away with the filibuster and pass imigration reform. That will get everyone off to a cumbaja start.

You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.
Now Ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
‘Cause ev’ry hand’s a winner and ev’ry hand’s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.”

Heyyyy . . . I have it on good authority that K’Chak takes regular baths all by himself, with no supervision needed.
Once a month, whether he needs one or not.

@Reality: South Africa THRIVING- NO, NOT really, it is a debacle as for Canada, thriving,eh?, as for Australia, thriving-huh, can’t remember if I have bought anything made in australia and if they are thriving is because they control their immigration SO tightly, they only accept productive people and let’s just sweep under the rug the aboriginal thing. You MUST go to the library now…..
@ Joe 2:45, agree with a lot you have said, if conservatives do not learn, the libs will overplay their hand, it is the nature of the political beast

” change the way it is done; one month before the election each side gives it’s platform; then NO interpretation/analysis/projecting by any media, then the vote. DONE”
Otherwise known as the “just lie your azz off – nobody will call you on it” election technique. Why would republicans want that?
Oh…yeah…
