There’s truth being told in conservative circles today, for those who are willing to hear it.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, for example, appears to be throwing his support behind the so-called DREAM Act, which would allow young immigrants brought here illegally as children to attend college and earn citizenship:
“In the next Congress, I am committed to working on upward mobility policies that will ensure people who work hard and play by the rules can rise above the circumstances of their birth and leave their children better off. The conservative movement should have particular appeal to people in minority and immigrant communities who are trying to make it, and Republicans need to work harder than ever to communicate our beliefs to them.”
And Conor Friedersdorf, writing in The Atlantic, asks why so many of his conservative colleagues were shocked and surprised last night, given that the outcome had been predicted for weeks by polls and expert analysis.
His conclusion: Because under the business model employed by the right-wing media at Fox News and elsewhere, it is more profitable to tell conservatives what they want to hear, not what they need to hear.
“But guess what?” he asks his fellow conservatives.
You haven’t just been misinformed about the horse race. Since the very beginning of the election cycle, conservative media has been failing you. With a few exceptions, they haven’t tried to rigorously tell you the truth, or even to bring you intellectually honest opinion. What they’ve done instead helps to explain why the right failed to triumph in a very winnable election.
Why do you keep putting up with it?
Conservatives were at a disadvantage because Romney supporters like Jennifer Rubin and Hugh Hewitt saw it as their duty to spin constantly for their favored candidate rather than being frank about his strengths and weaknesses. What conservative Washington Post readers got, when they traded in Dave Weigel for Rubin, was a lot more hackery and a lot less informed about the presidential election.
Conservatives were at an information disadvantage because so many right-leaning outlets wasted time on stories the rest of America dismissed as nonsense. WorldNetDaily brought you birtherism. Forbes brought you Kenyan anti-colonialism. National Review obsessed about an imaginary rejection of American exceptionalism, misrepresenting an Obama quote in the process, and Andy McCarthy was interviewed widely about his theory that Obama, aka the Drone Warrior in Chief, allied himself with our Islamist enemies in a “Grand Jihad” against America. Seriously?
Conservatives were at a disadvantage because their information elites pandered in the most cynical, self-defeating ways, treating would-be candidates like Sarah Palin and Herman Cain as if they were plausible presidents rather than national jokes who’d lose worse than George McGovern.
How many months were wasted on them?
How many hours of Glenn Beck conspiracy theories did Fox News broadcast to its viewers? How many hours of transparently mindless Sean Hannity content is still broadcast daily? Why don’t Americans trust Republicans on foreign policy as they once did? In part because conservatism hasn’t grappled with the foreign-policy failures of George W. Bush. A conspiracy of silence surrounds the subject. Romney could neither run on the man’s record nor repudiate it.
The most damaging Romney gaffe of the campaign, where he talked about how the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes are a lost cause for Republicans? Either he was unaware that many of those people are Republican voters, or was pandering to GOP donors who are misinformed. Either way, bad information within the conservative movement was to blame.”
The piece gets stronger from there, including language I’m not allowed to publish on this blog. If you’re a conservative seriously concerned about your movement’s future, I highly recommend it. Because if you don’t get this part right, you cannot get the rest of it right.

Fred,
Lemme know when you can come up with something on your own. Your posts on charter schools was nothing more than a rehash of Jays thread on the subject a few days ago. No different than those ti
rushbots that you whine about incessantly. As for the several examples you put up on charter schools so what? Jeez dude. Get a frigging grip on reality. Do you have any idea how much money is wasted or lost to graft every year in public school systems. But go on copying Jays debate points like a good little minion while whining every day about rushbots. The irony is not lost on us.

I found something truly compelling in this morning’s AJC electoral map. It appears, at last count, that the citizens of Florida cast approximately 8.4 million votes in the presidential election. To get a sense for the turnout in the Sunshine State, the state of California cast only approximately 9.2 million votes in the election and California has over twice as many people in that state….remarkable turnout in FL.
Now, to the meat and potatoes of the piece: Mitt Romney is correct – there are an increasing number of people in this country who’ve been raised to think, not in terms of opportunity and freedom, but, rather, in terms of what benefits can I get from government. Ultimately this thinking will lead to the situation in Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Countries where the government spends & borrows to pay for unsustainable promised benefits. Result, they have to renegotiates/repudiate/inflate/tax their way out of their sovereign debts. People leave, country’s GDP falls, productivity declines,…just ask the Europeans.
Mitt wasn’t elected, but, on this point, Mitt was correct.

Whoever listens to others and believes everything they hear is very gullable and i would think that most that listen to FOX take it as one of their news outlets and not the sole one. In fact, i like FOX news and find it better than most. I had heard that MSNBC was massively liberal and could not believe it so i viewed it for about 15 minutes on election night and i was amazed at how radical it was to the left. It was as if the entire election coverage was being ruled by Jesse Jackson at his prime. They were spending all of their time getting everyone into a frenzy about how long voting lines in VA was the result of a concerted effort by the Republican party to not get Democrats to vote. What a boat load of whooy! They had massive turnout by both Democrats and Republicans and I did not hear them complaining or leaving the polls, just that MSNBC decided that it was some massive conspiracy as if somehow Republicans would be willing to wait in line but not the Democrats. The worst I actually heard of was in GA in some parts of Fulton County but his was from massive incompetence and they will be subject to fines and possible law suites as a result.

Funny how the increase in the Dow since Obama’s original election is not to be “credited” to Obama but a drop must be….. sounds like a gas issue for poor widdle Doomy. Guess them genius econ professors he had that used home economic examples did not teach him that a predicted reelection of Obama was already factored into the market prices. Doom — “Joe mama, Judging by the rise in gold”
Izzat anything like the rise in real estate a few years ago?
“I think those folks who listened to glen beck are sitting pretty right about now.”
Not really. If they listened to Beck and bought from the places he advertised, they didn’t buy bullion; they bought collectible coins from resellers. What Beck and the resellers didn’t tell the prospective buyers is that unless you’re buying *bullion* coins — and by the IRS definition, *very few* coins meet that standard except for US Government issues — you’ll wind up paying not only tax on the appreciation, but also a Collectible Fee of as much as 35% when you sell them.
Besides, your own pal, Thomas Sowell, advises against direct investment in gold; according to Sowell, gold doesn’t hold its value relative to other investments like stocks and bonds.
If you’re going to invest in gold, either invest in a solid mining company or in an ETF. Don’t invest in physical gold unless you *know* what you’re doing; otherwise, expect to get bitten.

Couple of points from the Conservative.
1) The Romney handlers chose to ignore the obvious winning issues, for what reason I have no idea. Obamacare was never a significant issue from Romney, yet the unfavorability remains at over 55%. The House was won by Republicans in 2010 over this very issue. Romney chose to sit back and allow thousands of TV spots to lie and distort who he was, no response left a negative impression. Why did he allow those to go unchallenged? I cannot figure why Romney chose to ignore the Benghazi issue. Why Solyndra, Fisker, and various scandals were not part of the campaign why did Romney fail to make an issue of the increase in the number of White House staffers or the enormous increase in salaries and pay increases during these difficult economic times to White House staffers? All in all, Romney ran a very lame campaign against Obama.
2) Obama enjoys a willing accomplice in the so called Main Steam media. Why was Benghazi
ignored? Where is the reporting on FEMA’s unbelievably poor response to Sandy? Why did the MSM choose to ignore Solyndra, political donations by Solyndra stockholders after bankruptcy, and why have there been no reports on who crafted Obamacare, who received what for supporting the bill, and what the implementation really means to ever person, Medical professionals, Hospitals? The same MSM which had insatiable appetites for Bush, Cheney, Newt, Tom Delay, doesn’t share that appetite for finding the truth about Chris Dodd’s Countrywide loans, who is operating the so called Obama phone contract at over $1 Billion per yr without bid, who benefits from the refusal to allow Keystone to be built.
In any event it is history now. I would recommend to Roger Ailes at Fox that he fire that goofy troll Dick Morris today. The only place “Black Helicopters” author is legit is on the Comedy Channel, or Cartoon Network and only because there is not yet a Blithering Idiot Network. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity have run their course, they’ve been left behind by this Conservative.

What does the President have to do with the price of gas? Much of the food price problem has to do with issues of climate effecting crops. And as for your pay going down, well that didn’t just happen because of President Obama. You can’t stop a freight train on a dime and you can’t turn a ship around like you’re making a U-turn in a car. The problems with your paycheck are related to the policies set in motion years earlier.
Just like the policies put in place by this president have helped with 30+ months of job growth we will continue to reap benefits because unlike his predecessor(whom his own party shunned like a leper) he’s put us on the right track.

Rightwing media did not level with Republicans, imo, because of a deep cynicism. Even though often the rightwing media knew the truth themselves, they cynically and consciously decided to spin truth for two reasons. They wanted to give today’s far rightwing Republicans what they wanted to hear to keep their base and audience on board with them and happy, but also because they wanted to perpetuate the lies of demagoguery in order to pad the pocketbooks of the coporate billionaire ideologues for whom they worked and of whom they were aligned polticially, as well as to pad their own pocketbooks by following their “marching orders” in doing so. Often feigning a purity of patriotism and love of conservative ideas – mainly to accrue great wealth for oneself and one’s family – can create a deeply submerged cynicism in one’s soul, that – masked well – some never see, including the one who is selling the propaganda not only to others but to him/herself.
Conservatives cannot simply pull in constituencies, such as the Latino vote, by voicing a more inclusive mantra. Instead, they will have to fundamentally change, from within, to believe authentically in a vision of all humanity which sees others in egalitarian terms, rather than in hierarchial terms. Monied people often fail to see others through egalitarian eyes, although they can mask their hierarchial vision of others through appearances, such as supporting humanitarian works of some limited selection.
Some have pondered, over the years since the Civil Rights Movement, why African-Americans have voted for present day Democrats en masse, seemingly becoming only tools to serve that political party’s interests without awareness. I believe to see African-Amaerican in this light because they have voted in large voting blocs for Democrats is wrongheaded thinking. Those who think that African-Americans have been used by Democrats, instead of making up their own minds, with insight, demonstrate a basic disrespect for the intelligence and awareness of African-Americans. I believe that African-Americans, like women, have a special radar – having been suppressed for decades – as to who authentically sees them and their capabilities and sensibilities with egalitarian eyes and who does not – over and beyond verbal arguments put forth to gain their support. I believe that African-American, like women, have grativated toward the present day Democratic Party because of how Democrats perceive them.
For example, when Gov. Romney changed his political approach toward a more moderate one from a hardline conservative one, in the presidential election, he gathered more support overall, but he never really gained the full support of women, or the full support of African Americans, because these two groups have developed a special emotional radar, if you will, which could see beneath his tactical change by his words, alone. These two groups knew how deeply the 47% remark made by Gov. Romney in private resonated in his heart and soul,, beyond what he said. They could see that he lacked the authentic internal vision to see them as equals, without any condescension in his heart – and that he lacked the vision, in other words, of the true egalitarian who sees all human beings as equals (regardless of the cards in life that each human being might be given to play) and regardless of how kind a man he might be with his own loved ones. In other words, they saw that Mitt Romney lacked a deeply human vision of, and understanding for, all humanity that Barack Obama contains in his heart and soul. And they understood that beyond words.
This is a subtle awareness and a subtle change of consciousness that Republicans will have to come to understand in their hearts as well as in their minds, and that takes longer to understand than a “sensitivity training” session. It requires a change of how one sees the world and those who inhabit it.
Don't Forget - Obama is a two term president.

Isn’t it charming to see conservatives openly rooting for economic disaster on the country that they claim to love, and only because they happened to lose an election.
It’s just like it was 4 years ago. They feel they “need to destroy the country in order to save it”. It’s insane but that’s how they seem to feel. They seek a country where there’s no questioning of their principles or how they apply them or the facts that govern the times. We’ve had declining wages for something like 15 years but only the past 4 matter to them. And when a working family can’t put food on the table, clothes on the back and a roof over the head much less healthcare when you get sick they view them as moochers with wealth envy. Well, like Barak said “proceed governor”.

After the Ohio race was called by all, I changed channels to watch FOX news. How entertaining! Some were eating crow so fast they had to take TUMS. Others were still sticking to their “guns” and continuing their ditto-head ways. It was so very sad to hear them continue to bash OUR President and the winner of the election – sore losers!

You and your liberal brethren are under the assumption that all conservatives eat, sleep and breathe Talk Radio and Fox News talking points 24-7; many of us do not.
But what we do feel as a result of last nights election and today’s crowing by all the liberal ‘Me Too’ers’ is profound sadness at the path that our country is taking and even more profound sadness at the glee that the winners feel. There is no joy in someone else bottle-feeding you or spinning you so your thoughts are not your own – on either side.
The destruction of the values, both moral and fiscal, of this country is hard for many to take. Some could care less.

“and I have a great attitude actually. ”
That is commendable. Many have experienced pay cuts and the other things you’ve mentioned. But they’ve also seen the end of mass layoffs, some hiring, housing prices stabilized and the like.
It takes longer to recover from major wounds than it does from a cold. But I think things are slowly, little by little, getting better.

“Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly proffered a similar comment Tuesday night when he was asked why the race was so tight between Obama and the Republican nominee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
“Because it’s a changing country. The demographics are changing,” O’Reilly said. “It’s not a traditional America anymore. And there are 50 percent of the voting public who want STUFF. They want THINGS. And who is going to give them things? President Obama. He knows it and he ran on it. Whereby 20 years ago, President Obama would have been roundly defeated by an establishment candidate like Mitt Romney. … The voters, many of them, feel that the economic system is stacked against them, and they want STUFF. … People feel that they are entitled to things, and which candidate between the two is going to give them things.”

If we want the DOW to climb, we need to push Congress to reach a compromise on the budget instead of sticking to the no compromise positions of past years. One good move, IMO, would be to pass a rule that no amendment not directly connected to a bill may be added. Those are just bargaining chips and we all know it.. If a bill is bad, it does not pass. Pare it down to something most can agree on. Why is this so hard?
