Boehner: ‘We’re willing to accept new revenue’

It’s a long, torturous road from word to deed, but this could be huge …

“Republicans are “willing to accept new revenue” to tame the soaring national debt and avert an ugly battle over the approaching “fiscal cliff,” House Speaker John A. Boehner said Wednesday in a speech that offered a potential path to compromise in year-end budget negotiations.

With President Obama reelected and Republicans returned to a slightly smaller majority in the House, Boehner (R-Ohio) said Tuesday’s election amounted to a plea from voters for the parties to lay down their weapons of the past two years and “do what’s best for our country.”

“That is the will of the people. And we answer to them,” Boehner said, according to advance excerpts of a speech he planned to deliver at an afternoon news conference at the Capitol. “For purposes of forging a bipartisan agreement that begins to solve the problem, we’re willing to accept new revenue, under the right conditions.”

We’ll see what Eric Cantor, Tom Price and Paul Ryan, among other GOP House members, have to say about this. Boehner also repeated his opposition to raising revenue by increasing tax rates, suggesting that he would accept doing so by altering the tax code. But the ice might be breaking.

@Recon: Who’ll be sitting in the freakin’ Oval Office for the next four years? If Bill Clinton had been President this obstructionist BS would have given way to his uncanny use of Presidential power. They would have folded like a Walmart suit!

I’m hoping the POTUS will try to work with the Republicans, but if they resist I hope he brings to bear every ounce of Presidential power he has at his disposal.

The situation is dire and action must be taken. The time is long past for this partisan bullshoot to give way to rational governance!

you sure talk about being a great law enforcement guy in the TSA a helluva lot more than I’ve ever discussed my military service.

Look at your screen name and then look at mine. One is about military service and the other one has nothing to do with my job at all. I haven’t worked for TSA since 2005 either, nor do I really talk much about it unless someone asks questions.

History is what history is. Only those who don’t learn from it are doomed to repeat it. So, if it bothers you that I discuss the historical treatment of Blacks, then oh well. We can’t change the past. We can only use the past to learn what to do in the future. I tend to discuss history of lots of things as the field of American history is one of my many interests. Unlike you and many like you, I have no problem with discussing the history of this country, and I don’t get uncomfortable about doing so.

It’s going to take both new revenue and spending cuts to make substantial progress on the debt.

Today Obama floated the idea of a carbon emission tax. In other words power companies will pass on increased costs and once again screw the middle class. Obama could have gone after the hedge fund guys, close their tax loopholes. But he went to Wall Street and raised big bucks there so, like almost everybody in Washington, he is owned by the Street. Ergo lies one of the fundamental problems in this country.

On the other hand when Boy-George Bush took office our defense spending was around $300 billion a year. Now it’s $600. Time to take out the hatchet, time to quit feeding the defense contractors. A 20% cut would still leave us with more than strong enough.

Raising revenue by taxing the rich is fool’s gold–maybe even intentionally so. It won’t avail the US treasury of nearly as much money as growing the economy would. Still, we can’t have rich people not willing to give some “skin” in the game.

Oh, and did anyone see the DOW today?

Looks like Democrats are already getting their wishes coming true. There is more skin in the game, and the rich are getting skinned after all.

Will that help the treasury?

“moron”, “retarded”, “black on the inside”, “mentally ill”, “Unamerican”, “we should all wear black today”, and more…

These were the things said to my 11yo daughter yesterday as she went to the defense of a friend who was being harassed by a group of 7 kids at their East Cobb middle school yesterday. She tells me at least one of those kids has been spouting all this crap for the last couple weeks.

So now on top of all else a parent has to worry about when we send our children off to school, we have to worry about political bullying as well.

It’s one thing to come a blog like this and fling zingers, but in my personal life I choose to NEVER discuss 2 things with people, politics and religion. I’m not one of those folks who has been incessantly posting political items on my facebook page, or covers my car with bumper stickers. I have a dear friend, more than one really, who has gone nuts with all the Oblama stuff on FB, I love him like a brother so I just read it and chuckle, but these things don’t interfere with who he and I are when we get together.

It’s one thing to strongly believe something and/or strongly believe in something, it’s quite another to instill this crap into your children. I speak to right or left. The ex Mrs. Troll is fairly verbal about her beliefs, I have no control over that. I’m proud of my daughter for stepping up to defend a friend who was set upon, but I did talk to her about publicly espousing your political beliefs, it’s just not a good idea.

Kids need to be kids, and this kind of stuff ain’t kid stuff. Think about what we’re doing to the children.

Finally, the “unAmerican” comment makes my blood boil, her grandfather joined the navy at the age of 17, then the army after that, he saw action in two wars. Her Uncle went to Grenada, her other uncle almost bled out on a dirt road in Fallujah in 2004 from an IED, I’d be willing to bet that not one of those 7 kids spouting this crap in an East Cobb middle school can say the same.

UnAmerican indeed.

I am amused by the people who say Romney lost because he was too liberal. Let’s see, the Republicans have alienated the blacks, the Hispanics, a whole lot of women – and now they want to alienate the center, independent voter?

That is NOT smart. The reason that Romney did as well as he did is because of support from centrist independent voters. Call him a RINO if you want, but a very conservative Rebublican candidate would have lost by a landslide.

It’s time Obama led instead of blaming other people for his failures! Hiding behind Hillary Clinton’s skirt on the coverup isn,t working either!

“If there ain’t some cuts involved it ain’t gonna work.”

and no one is saying that cuts aren’t part of the deal – all Dems have said all along is that taxes need to increase as well

Taxing the upper class their fair share may not solve all the revenue problems , but it’s a dang good start.

“their fair share”

mmmm … that language gets me nowhere. we have a progressive tax already – they already SHOULD pay their fair share.

what we need to do is close the loopholes so that they actually pay what they’re supposed to.

You’re right, it won’t solve anything. It’s Obama’s same old class warfare.

I’m having a real tough time getting a handle on the definition of “fair share”…seems to me that amount is governed by the tax code…despite all its flaws. I guess I’m mistaken as I have learned from DEMs that “fair share” means other people not including their base need to pay more and pushing the tax code to the limit is akin to stealing from women and children.

The vilification of the wealthy is a sad outcome/successful strategy of the DEMS…our dysfunctional government spends more than we can pay and it’s the fault of the evil wealthy…I think that the issue with whether individuals of any means, like the government, life beyond their means, bought too much house poorly timed…etcetera….argueably our government is a microcosm of all of us…

We borrow money to finance luxuries that we should pay cash for…in risky fashion, mortgaging that which should be left for our kids..talk about screwed..

Taxing the upper class is a good start, then start cutting programs and going after fraud. Why do so many guppies want to protect the wealthy sharks? It’s insane…

What is Obama going to do to enable people getting free stuff to stand on their own two feet and earn a living instead of depending on the Gov for their very existence? Free stuff isn’t really free. It’s being paid for by the working class.

How do you define fair share? I agree that we can use the projected $80 billion a year, regardless of the fact that it has already been spent and its fractional relationship with the $1.2-1.4 TRILLION that we spend beyond our means..what’s the plan for the other 94%?

This lifestyle, like socialism (but not yet) is fine until you run out of other peoples money….I think we should jump off fiscal cliff…at least we’d all be in this together..

Stevie Ray – which is why I have a problem with the phrase “fair share” – I don’t disagree with you in the least on that one.

(and, as anyone here who knows me well will attest, I’m all for a flat tax with no deductions)

I don’t / won’t / can’t speak for all Dems, but I can say that *I* don’t vilify the wealthy – I only vilify those who think that they EARNED the money they inherited and those who look down their noses at the working class, calling them scroungers and takers. The majority of the poor ARE working poor – working. As in, they HAVE a job. If they don’t pay income taxes, it’s because of programs that RONALD REAGAN started because he thought that was the best way to help them get out of poverty. Don’t like it? Take it up with him.

Lastly, I couldn’t agree more on debt – the mister and I are completely debt-free. No mortgage. We pay off our credit-card every month. We don’t just live within our means, we live well under our means. But, I also know that we’re lucky – we’re both gainfully employed in good companies that pay a decent salary. Neither of us have an illness – and, if we did, we have health insurance + the NHS.

Why do you believe in such propaganda? Do you really believe that is the cause of our massive debt? Try unfunded tax cuts, 2 wars, medicare part d, interest on the debt, lower revenue because of the great recession. Get off the merry go round of blaming welfare for all our ills. In the great scheme of our debt, it is insignificant…

So everyone that you define as “wealthy” are sharks? You have no idea what you are saying. If you are a liberal desiring to continue to spend 30% (taxing the rich as proposed will get you $80 billion a year..its already spent) to maintain a lifestyle we can’t afford, I view your comments as just another exaggerated talking point..

Who do you think already pays 80% of the taxes? Who do you think pays the vast majority of charity donations? I could go on but generalizing as you do is not exactly a well thought out commmentary…IMO

Wake up dude…I’m only talking about raising taxes on them four percentage points not confiscating all their wealth. They can easily afford more…geez, how did we ever have millionaires and billionaires in the 90’s? Let them pay more, it’s a no brainer…

Amen for the flat tax..the 20% will still pay 80% but at least transparency will be legit.

I’m heading your way for my bi-annual visit to Lloyds to mingle with the most astounding group of arrogant, mostly trust funded, group of “aristocracy” in you land..at least in my limited travel..

Been doing this for years..most memorable things I’ve viewed were DaVinci’s hand drawings during Queens Jubilee in early 2000 and a Picasso/Matisse comparative exhibit at the Tate…The food has certainly made amazing strides since the 80’s and prior..love that town.

I agree with you on those making $500K or more and we should make it more transparent by eliminating all deductions and applying a flat tax..unfortunately and as is the case with all issues, the tax lawyers pay too much vigorous to our elected money sponges that the likihood of putting them out of business is remote

Sorry if I came off as a dick…not adequately caffeinated:-(
