UPDATE: 6:40: Early exit polls report that 2012 electorate is ’slightly’ more Republican than in 2008. That’s crucial, because most 2012 polling is built on the assumption that 2012 turnout will be similar to 2008 turnout.
UPDATE: 7:40 Obama up in early Ohio exit polls.
Winning by 11 among women, down 6 among men. Net up three. If that holds, that’s crucial.
UPDATE: 8:07: Early exit polling from Pennsylvania: Obama up five. That is the sound of a door slamming shut. Romney needs some good news, and so far he isn’t getting any.
UPDATE: 9:28″ Romney needs to prove that the polls are wrong, and so far they just aren’t. For example, Fox just gave Wisconsin — Paul Ryan’s home state — to Obama. Another door slams shut.
UPDATE: 9:52: New Hampshire called. Pennsylvania called. Both for Obama. Romney is running out of routes to the White House.
In the Senate, Elizabeth Warren beats Scott Brown; Richard Mourdock loses in Indiana. Tammy Baldwin wins in Wisconsin, becoming our first openly gay U.S. senator.
UPDATE: 10:05: Republicans were insistent that the polls were oversampling Democrats, that there was no way so many Americans were Democratic.
So far, it looks as though they were wrong.
UPDATE: 10:48: This bodes poorly long-term for the GOP:
Exit poll finds that 74 percent of Republicans believe illegal immigrants should be deported.
Overall, just 29 percent of Americans share that opinion. So how do you convince that 74 percent that the party has to alter its viewpoint to succeed?

More heartening, was the GOP’s War on Women had disastrous backfire consequences. I believe a historic number of ladies (19?) will now sit in the US Senate!
And Tulsi Gabbard (D – Il)AND Tammy Duckworth (D – Hi) win! They are the first two female combat veterans to ever sit in the US House of Representatives!!
Also, Martha McSally (R – Az), a retired United States Air Force colonel is leading by a small margin in her U.S. congressional race in Arizona.
She was the first American woman to fly in combat since the 1991 lifting of the prohibition of women in combat, flying the A-10 over Iraq and Kuwait.)
She sued the US Department of Defense, challenging the military policy that required U.S. and U.K. servicewomen stationed in Saudi Arabia to wear the body-covering abaya when traveling off base in the country.

It was hilarious watching the talking heads on Fox News last night trying to come up with every explanation possible other than looking in the mirror and saying, “we have seen the enemy and it is us.” (Thank you Pogo). Let’s get something straight. I am white, female, old (voted for Nixon twice), I am blessed to be in the upper tax brackets, I have a wonderful career, and everyone I know is like me. By the way, I was in a Starbucks in Chicago when the President’s motorcade went by, everyone jumped up and went out to watch as it sped by. These were Chicagoans that love that man and they were proud. It was still early afternoon, so they didn’t know he was going to be elected. By the way. Not one of them was black, not one was Hispanic, and, since they were drinking outrageously priced coffee, I assume they were gainfully employed. So, Repugs, spin, spin, spin, spin….

I disagree with the apparent outcome, but congratulate Democrats on their victory. Regardless, I was among many who incorrectly thought that the polls expecting a D+5 or 6 turnout was oversampling. I’ll offer an apology to Nate Silver as well because his projections are looking closer than I expected.
I’ll definitely provide more thoughts later, but for now, the evening looks to belong to Democrats by the slimmest of margins.
Regardless of what I may think – a win is a win.

Just so it’s clear, it’s not Nate Silver who’s vindicated (although I imagine he will be rewarded handsomely–if nothing else, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have to worry about paying back that $700K book advance) but rather his methodology, which was hardly his alone.
Just as you don’t only see the tired Triple Crown offensive stats for hitters on the TeeVee, at least not so much any more, but more emphasis on on-base average, so I imagine that in the next general election you will see more attention paid to an aggregate of state polling rather than the same tired and ultimately not-terribly-significant national polling.
I’m sure that the big polling players will adjust their resources and rhetoric accordingly.
