In the calm eye of the storm, a moment to contemplate

Last week we celebrated Halloween, a day on which little people seeking goodies dress up and pretend to be things they really aren’t, like superheroes and villains.

In the adult world, we call that Election Day.

As you might have noticed from that remark, it’s easy — too easy — to get cynical after these endless months of politicking and campaigning. Even worse, there’s reason to fear that in an election as close as this one, the wrangling may continue or even intensify after final votes are cast today, with judges, lawyers and courtrooms trying to resolve what voters and ballots could not.

So in this moment of relative sanity and calm, in these few hours in the eye of storm in which all we can do is wait, let’s talk about better, more important things. Because as I was reminded again last week, there is no better antidote to cynicism than a gap-toothed little five-year-old standing on your doorstep, bag held open and a hopeful look upon her face.

Delightful in its own right, it brings back a flood of recollection for all or most of us. I still have dimming memories of being a young boy in costume, the paper bag clutched in my fists growing ever heavier from doorstep to doorstep. It seemed miraculous that we lived in a world in which people I did not even know kept giving me candy for no apparent reason. And though I don’t recall it directly, I know that somewhere back in the autumn shadows, my mother and father were hovering, keeping a warm, parental eye on us as we made the rounds.

In more recent Halloween memories, I have become that young father hovering in the background, watching as my own children toddle up the walkway in costume to knock on the door. And one part I remember vividly about those years were the older couples who would come to the door and coo and chuckle, charmed by the few minutes they got to share with children.

This year, with our children up and grown, we have in turn become that older couple, happy to see wide-eyed little ones on our doorstep. I can look at the child and see myself there, and look at the smiling parent and see myself there as well. Every Halloween we play out the same scene, with the same stock characters. But unlike the Bill Murray character in “Groundhog Day,” who is doomed to play the same role day after day, the passage of time gives us the chance to play every role in that tableau, to experience the tradition from every perspective.

Professional actors and actresses lucky enough to have long careers know that phenomenon well. They often find themselves playing different roles in the same classic plays, from the ingenue to the young mother to the matron to the grandmother. But it’s true in real life as well. As Shakespeare reminded us:

“All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players:

They have their exits and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts.”

Time allows you to experience life in the round, to see it and know it from every perspective. If time does bring wisdom, that is its source.

In the rest of that famous speech quoted above, Shakespeare writes of the seven ages of man, beginning with childhood and concluding in oldest age, when we turn again to childishness. It is a cycle, like so many other cycles, like the cycle of the seasons from late summer to fall to winter, and yes, even presidential election cycles. The end of one is the beginning of another.

And if that doesn’t frighten you, nothing will.

Yes, Tall, but when the current incumbent assumed office we were in a much worse condition – on the brink of a second Great Depression, facing the cleanup of an unprovoked war that was paid for with a tax cut. If we knew which face of the current rival to believe, he’ll finish the cleanup by un-obstructing Congress, allowing some of the languishing proposals of the former to pass. Anyway, gotta run – I’m an actual job creator, not a Cayman Island imaginary one…….

Two thoughts:

1. Both candidates are very decent people, and honestly either one will at least do an ok job, though I strongly favor Romney obviously.

2. I think the issue of race was almost entirely absent between the two candidates, and both deserve credit, but I think Romney did a stand up job of keeping the campaign about issues. And that was a huge service to America, but one largely unseen because of it’s absence.

Not only Fox but everywhere. This sort of “journalism” is pervasive in every facet of both the digital and the print media. You don’t know whom to believe, who is telling the truth, whom you can trust and worst of all, why they are doing it. Credibility is at an all time low…… and Bookman tells Halloween stories.

Has anyone seen an update on this change in early voting in Ohio?

Adrian Gray, who oversaw the Bush 2004 voter-contact operation and is now a policy analyst for a New York investment firm, makes the point that as of Tuesday, 530,813 Ohio Democrats had voted early or had requested or cast an absentee ballot. That’s down 181,275 from four years ago. But 448,357 Ohio Republicans had voted early or had requested or cast an absentee ballot, up 75,858 from the last presidential election.

Wonder if this really is the case..

I see where Granny is predicting anger from the Republicans when the President is re-elected.

Hmmm… I think it is fair to say that regardless fo who whens – there will be anger. This isn’t a Republican exclusive. I personally think Romney will win – but with that said, the following is great advice to all…

“I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them. 1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy: 2. To speak NO evil of the person they voted against: And, 3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

My 3 quesions to Pres Obama

1. Why did you have to save those people in Oh, Mich? you should have let them fail and brought more unemployment, even though you saved their jobs white males are still voting for the man who said let them fail, Obama was it worth it?

2. Why did you have to kill bin ladin? even though you have made America safe for the last 4 years southern white conservatives males dont care, you should have let bin ladin and his gang bring danger on all the southern states, who dont apprecicate the freedom because hate is in their eyes.

3. Why bring troops home from Iraq, you should have let more troops die, why have any concern with people who call you names, dont respect the office of the President, label you a communist, socialist, why not let another 4,000 die the same way W did?

President Obama win or lose people around the world think the conservative white males who hate you dont think these people are worth it, if Mitt get elected when he send their sons to die in another war while his sons take their summer vacations they will miss you.

Thank you President Obama”””’

One difference. If President Obama is re-electedm that will end his campaigning for the next election, which he’s been doing since he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (snark snark) vs. being a leader. Roll that back, he’s been campaigning since re-election since swearing in, not the 10 days of ideas and rhetoric that earned him that Peace Prize.

Are you sure that quote is from Shakespeare? I’m pretty sure it is a line from a Rush song.

On the Electoral College issue, I can see why some would prefer it be proportional and it does make some sense. However, I wonder how that would be done in practice. Would it be a straight mathematical calculation based upon percentage of the popular vote? Or, would it be based upon districts similar to how Representatives are elected now? The latter could lead to all sorts of problems with drawing up districts etc. not unlike the nonsense we go through now. Also, a proportional system might give rise to regional or one-issue voter blocs that could make sure no candidate got the majority. Then, it would be decided by Congress which could lead to a few big states basically having all the power of the federal government. Love it or hate it, the Electoral College does a lot of things well and just blindly changing it could lead to bigger problems than we have now.

We’ve gotten as far as we have because of common sense and compromise. The only way we’ll progress further is to continue that path.

I live in Florida now but I am born and bred in Georgia. I supported Jimmy Carter when he first ran for President.. But in his re-election bid I support Reagan and have gone republican every since. I was so proud of George Bush in his 1st term, I was disappointed of him in his second term.
With all this said I love this country third only to God and my family. I just can not agree with the money being wasted by our government on programs that have failed. Democrats only know one thing, Throw tax payers money at the problem, when in fact that may be the worst thing you can do. People in the top bracket I feel would pay the proper amount of taxes if it meant something, But in the end you have to cut spending several times more than any tax increases to make a dent in the debt. JFK said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country” That needs to apply to both sides of the argument now.. For those who can not do for them selfs we will take care of, for those who can they must do as much as they can if that means 1% or 30%, they must do something to help, But the government has to make cuts in every area including defense and intitlements. Don’t hit those already on SS, but those under 55 must become less dependent on government. Look towards Belgium (I just visited there) and you will see how a craddle to grave government has not worked as its work force has aged and there are not enough workers to pay for those who are retired and their system is going to crash within 10 years and they will have tons of broken promises just when people depend on those promises. Its time the US, Fixed this problem!!

“Obama is a man without honor.

2. I would think those concerned most with safety would be our military who overwhelmingly support Romney.

3. You left out 9-11 was planned and trained for on a democrats watch who failed to take the threat seriously in the 90s.

African americans will be voting full force this cycle, there’s the firewall that you despise most. Romney never really closed the deal, the lies at the end about jeep was his defining jump the shark, hail mary moment – pass batted down, no score…

Keep, 9:43,

I personally don’t care if our next president is purple with pink polka dots….. it just doesn’t matter. What matters is what he has in mind for the future of our country. He is a true socialist and he has no pride in America. In fact, he really doesn’t like America. he doesn’t believe in our heritage….. he has no reason to. About the only time he spent in this country as a young man was spent at Punahou School in HI getting high. His true roots lie elsewhere, somewhere in some Muslim mosque or perhaps in his beloved Indonesia….. certainly not as an American. But he fits right in to your plan, does he not? Take from the producers and give to the lazy who refuse to produce. Many very learned people have warned us against this kind of behavior but some just don’t seem to get it. And you are at the head of the line.

I don’t think we will know the outcome until tomorrow or possibly Thursday. Not being cycnical but this is tight. As far as voting, I am proud to say we made it a family affair. Hubby and I voted with our twins (their first time) and they were so proud, as was I! Here’s a litle humor for today – LOVE George Carlin!

Completely missed the point, td. Both sides have been saying that the other side would take the USA into the dark ages. Today, the repubs are saying that the economy will get better regardless of who wins and things won’t be so bad after all, even though Romney is still going to win 300 electoral votes.

Keep Up the Good Fight!

Election Day / Super Bowl of the political sphere

A big thank you to all those who served or are currently serving in a military or police capacity. Your efforts play an integral part in keeping this country safe; which in-turn allows us to have great days like today.

Regardless of the outcome, election day in my opinion is one hell of a special day.

If you haven’t voted, please get out there and do so.

L. Nightmare — “1. No intelligent woman actually buys into this, it is a liberal mindset and this argument moves no one in the middle which is the whole intention of the statement. Polls have shown it actually insults women for the dems to keep touting this as a reason not to vote right.”

“No True Scotsman” logical fallacy.

“2. I would think those concerned most with safety would be our military who overwhelmingly support Romney.”

As a disabled veteran, let me disabuse you of both of those notions. Our military’s tired and overburdened. The last thing they need to be worrying about now is *another* Republican war of choice, and that’s what Romney’s promised.

“3. You left out 9-11 was planned and trained for on a democrats watch who failed to take the threat seriously in the 90s.”

Incorrect. The first WTC bombers (1993) were found, convicted and imprisoned under the Clinton Administration. Clinton also wanted chemical taggants placed in substances that could be used in bombs; Congress refused to pass the legislation. A shame, too, because chemical taggants could have helped catch Tim McVeigh faster — as it was, he was only caught by blind luck.

Whereas Bush’s response to 9/11 primarily involved invading the wrong country and expanding governmment so that everyone getting on an airplane and their luggage receives a free Federal inspection.

gm- 3. Why bring troops home from Iraq, you should have let more troops die

He tried his best to keep our troops there but al-Maliki told him to pound sand and sent him running home with his tail between his legs. Leave it to obama to declare victory and take credit for something he was against and had nothing to do with.

today is the day of reckoning. did jay and his minions’ half-truths and diversions cause enough simpletons to vote BHO to “victory”. “victory” meaning that the lucifer libs and huge government will be able to run amuck and once and for alltime destroy what was a pretty decent country (not perfect; not close to perfect) and inflict the hidden agenda of retribution. will $6 – 8/gallon gas become the norm; will the deficit exponentially take off ever higher; will the libs steal your hard earned dollars from your 401k and pensions and redistribution to those that didn’t make good choices. just for LOL.. will the racists such as Joe Lowery, Al Sharpton,… Jesse Jackson, Jeremiah Wright enjoy the day or not…

Brothers! Oh, brothers! We have all gathered here, to preserve our hallowed culture and heritage! We aim to pull evil up by the root, before it chokes out the flower of our culture and heritage! And our women, let’s not forget those ladies, y’all. Looking to us for protection! From darkies, from Jews, from papists, and from all those smart-ass folks say we come descended from monkeys!
