What happens when a lie goes astray?
You may recall the right wing’s hysteria last week over the way that events had supposedly played out in Benghazi, Libya. Stoked by inflammatory, deeply irresponsible misreporting on Fox News, they insisted that this scandal was bigger than Watergate, and that for his cowardice President Obama would be disgraced as commander in chief and impeached and removed from office should he win a second term.
Oh, they were in fine, fine form, braying like so many hounds certain they have finally treed the fox.
President Obama, we were told, had AC-130 gunships within an hour of Benghazi but refused to use them to try to intervene on behalf of his ambassador. We had Special Forces units ready to go just two hours away, at Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, but a cowardly Obama again barred a rescue operation, fearful that it might endanger his re-election if it went astray.
And twice — TWICE!!! — former SEALs at a nearby CIA compound had requested permission to intervene in the assault on the U.S. consulate, but twice they had been ordered to stand down and do nothing. Finally, the ex-SEALS defied orders from Washington, made their way to the consulate and rescued some of their fellow Americans. Obama, in contrast, was ready to just let them all die.
Fox News also reported that upon returning to the CIA annex, those same ex-SEALs had “lasered” a mortar targeting their position in hopes that an AC-130 would arrive to take it out, but again no help came. That same mortar later killed two of those ex-SEALs.
But as predicted here, none of that turned out to be true. None. From beginning to end, and in all its details, that story has proved to be false.
– There were no orders from the CIA or anyone else to stand down. According to a CIA timeline released last week, once those at the CIA annex learned that the nearby consulate was under attack, an ad hoc rescue mission was quickly put together and launched within 25 minutes.
– As Pentagon spokesman George Little described it Friday, “there was no AC-130 within a continent’s range of Benghazi” that night. The closest gunship was in Afghanistan, some 2,500 miles away. The two surveillance drones that eventually reached the scene in Benghazi also had to be reassigned from elsewhere; neither was armed.
– Contrary to the Fox report, there were no Special Forces units available for insertion into the situation. Soon after word of the attack reached Washington, a special ops team was scrambled from a training facility somewhere in Central Europe — some sources have reported Croatia — and transported to Sigonella.
In addition, a second special ops unit was immediately alerted and transported from a military base here in the United States to Sigonella, as an option should a hostage situation develop. In other words, major preparations were underway to provide a military option should the opportunity arise to use it.
But as Little put it last week, the units “did not arrive until after the entire sequence of events was complete. … They were in Sigonella many hours after the attacks.” Two platoons of specially trained Marines had also been hustled to Sigonella, but again too late for intervention.
– Finally, there had been no “lasering” of the mortar position used to attack the CIA annex in the second phase of the assault. (That second phase occurred more than seven hours after the attack on the consulate had ended). There was no reason to use a laser in that fashion — the SEALs knew they had no air cover to intervene — and more importantly, no opportunity to do so.
According to the CIA, its personnel at the annex were not even aware that the mortars existed until mortar shells began falling on their position; from beginning to end, the deadly mortar attack lasted all of 11 minutes.
In conclusion, last week’s entire controversy was spectacularly, embarrassingly wrong-headed. No facts exist to justify the overheated rhetoric and allegations directed at Obama and top officials in his administration, but no apologies will follow either. Quite the contrary, I’m sure.

Jay,
If their were no military or CIA assets available to come to the aid of these brave diplomats and warriors, that makes me think we do need a bigger Navy as Romney said, and Barry mocked. Why with all the unrest happening in the middle east, do we not have a aircraft carrier group assigned full time to the Med. Could it be that the are all deployed in other hot spots, like the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.

My question is how many building will be burned down in the south when Obama wins this time. And in those burnings will we be able to filter out terrorist from the usual suspects. You will have the Waffle House gang who are harmless, but maybe some Taliban seek into that group of disgruntles and help torch the landscape with them, kind of merge the two causes. Then, like strangers robbing a bank together, one stranger pulls out his gun and starts shooting up the place killing a few folks. The Waffle House gang now tries to disengage but the Taliban is loading up the guns for a second roll of fireworks. “Who invited these guys?” “I thought you said you were related to them?” the Waffle House gang are heard saying as they leg a retreat.

What has Romney shown? When he left Mass. they were 47th in job creation. He’ not even going to win the state he governed. He claims ties to Michigan and that states a toss up. He’ll win Utah but that has to do with the religious ties of that community and he didn’t even get the endorsement of the states largest and most influential newspaper.
It seems to me those who know Romney best are not in his corner. Knowing him seems to cause a dislike for him.

I never thought of “bandwagoneers” as anything more than shorthand for “timid people who wait until they have decided it’s safe”, i.e., a mild insult, but I wasn’t really using it as such just now.

Simply put, BO’s policies have not produced jobs. During his time in office, 14.7 million people were added to the food stamp rolls. Over that same time, only 194,000 jobs were created—thus 76 people went on food stamps for every one that found a job.

Thats a pretty disgusting comment and I feel ashamed that you would ever use that as an attack. By that logic any time Bush sent a troop overseas he was personally responsible for killing him. Please, people, think before you talk. And before people jump down my throat, its absolutley horrible that anyone had to die, but to blame it on a president? Jay – We don’t know what the facts are on Benghazi as they are still coming out. And you’re right, there are conflicting reports from DOD, CIA, NSC and ground reports from Benghazi itself. Within hours of the Bin Laden attack, however, the president reported to the American people exactly what he ordered, what was done, and how it was done. We don’t have that here, which makes the optics for the admin bad. If the optics were good for the president, there’s no way the president would not be out front on this, not least because of the political benefits. But he’s not. He has vacillated significantly. He has equivocated. Why not just hold a press conference with president, VP, SoS, DefSec, NSA, Joint Chiefs head, and CIA director? Lay it out there. Explain to the American people what was done, when, by whom. It has been nearly 2 months. The reason I and many others think he has not is because the optics are bad for him, because there was a breakdown somewhere, and because we failed to protect our men on a battlefield. Perhaps, I am wrong. But until and unless the president and his chief advisers lay out the events, others will fill a vacuum, even if incorrectly.

The controversy at its base is still there, you just continue to ignore it.
Why was Obama lying and blaming this on a video (and thus a US citizen) for two weeks after he knew it wasn’t true?
Yes, I know, lies are only bad when a Repuiblican said it, lies are fine when Obama says them because he never does anything wrong, so obviously he had a good reason to lie to us for weeks. So what was this reason?
Nice strawman argument, Jay. Hardly anyone is talking about that stuff, they are talking about how Obama lied and blamed a video. Why don’t you respond to the actual controversy instead of this junk no one is talking about?

Who cares what FOX news says? The American public watched Obama speak before the U.N.and blame the Benghazi attack on a youtube video. Then Susan Rice spoke on the Sunday talk shows continuing the spin. These speeches were unfiltered by MSNBC, Fox, and any other service. Obama then denied it all in Debate #2 before the eyes of the American public. This was particularly damaging to Obama because it removed the only success of his administration-”I killed Bin Laden”. Killing bin Laden is not a foreign policy. The entire Benghazi episode highlights what has become the hallmark of the Obama presidency- lack of accountability and responsibility. It’s Bush’s fault, it’s the Tsunamis’ fault, it’s the evil 1%, it’s Congress’s fault, it’s Wall St’s fault, ad nauseum. At some point, President Obama must grow up and accept responsibility for his own actions, or more importantly, his inactions. His re-election campaign has been based on completely ignoring his time in office. We have spent four years and $5 Trillion playing the blame game. I am really tired of all the divisive rhetoric, misinformation, and partisan crap we have been inundated with for the past year or so from both parties and particularly the media. I guess that is the brave new world of 24/7 electronic media that has to fill time with endless in your face soundbites. It seems that the arts of diplomacy and negotiation are no longer essential for successful politicians. It is more important to gauge which party is “winning” at any given moment.Obama’s inabilty to create a bipartisan coalition on anything has resulted in one of the most mediocre administrations in history.

British sources on the ground in Benghazi said they are extremely frustrated by the attack and are still wondering why they weren’t called for help. “We have more people on the ground here than the Americans and I just don’t know why we didn’t get the call?” one said.

I am sick and tired of hearing about the Bengazzi attack. I am NOT taking it lightly that Americans were killed. The truth will come out eventually. Its a wonder the American people know anything about events like this. The news media on BOTH SIDES are so biased. Yes FOX news is conservative and yes NBC and MSNBC are liberal. My concern is the media on both sides should report the damn news on the FACTS. O’bama has been attacked every since he’s been in office, as BUSH was when he was in office. I know Jay you hate to hear “if Bush were in office” bla, bla bla. But its true. His name is mentioned by the O,bama crowd. “Look what I enherited”. all the time. I get so frustrated reading your columns and others because you NEVER critize O’bama’s crowd when we all know he makes bad decisions. Please don’t come back with “name them”. You are far more informed than I and you know the history of this administation the past 4 years. I just don’t understand why you and your peers are not more concerned about the future of this country than party affiliation? I vote for who I think will do the best for this country. Sometimes its a Democrat, sometimes a Republican. The political parties always do the same thing, get some person with a great appearance, personality, attractive family, likable, good speaker, (no matter experience) and stick them in front of the media and they do the rest. If you and your buddies would just look at everything on both candidates and leave party out of it the country would better off.

The last four years gave us our economy and auto industry back, occupations ended, no scandals and no attacks on the homeland.
This President did a great job and the cons know it.
The Obama’s are role models are there are none from the right.
He is calling for unity to govern for his second term to solve problems.
Will the right cooperate?
Hell no..

It would seem to make sense that having all the information on a surprise attack against you (Bengazi) would be a lot harder than disseminating information on an attack you planned. It’s really difficult for me to understand where you people keep coming up with this time frame.

Sorry, Jay, but no 2-bit blog writer is going to convince the people who actually care what happened in Libya to stop asking questions. From Foxnews.com this morning..
“”1:15 a.m.: CIA reinforcements arrive on a 45-minute flight from Tripoli in a plane they’ve hastily chartered. The Tripoli team includes four GRS security officers, a CIA case officer and two U.S. military personnel who are on loan to the agency. They don’t leave Benghazi airport until 4:30. The delay is caused by negotiations with Libyan authorities over permission to leave the airport, obtaining vehicles, and the need to frame a clear mission plan. The first idea is to go to a Benghazi hospital to recover Stevens, who they correctly suspect is already dead. But the hospital is surrounded by the Al Qaeda-linked Ansar al-Shariah militia that mounted the consulate attack.”
So the U.S. Ambassador to Libya is at the Benghazi hospital and suspected dead. The CIA contractors know that, but they can’t get there because the hospital is surrounded by the Al Qaeda-linked group Ansar al Shariah, the “militia that mounted the consulate attack.”
This goes up the chain communication at 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 12. The White House, the Situation Room, and all of those paying attention to intel channels know that the guys on the ground have determined the group that’s behind this. It’s the Al Qaeda-linked militia that are still fighting and have the hospital surrounded.”
So, Jay, when you’re done with all the other BS “divert, dodge, and deny” stories, how about you tell us where in this picture the BS story about the youtube video comes into play. You know, Jay, the video they were blaming this crap on for 2 full weeks after the attack.
You’re a hopeless stooge, Jay. Atlanta deserves better.

Have to give Bama credit on that last drive, but Myles coached you guys out of the game.
The 4th and 2 run instead of a FG attempt then an FG attempt instead of a punt in efforts to pin Bama inside the 10.
Mett looked good. Receivers dropped some key passes.
LSU is probably the best 2 loss team and better than many 1 loss teams.

Finally, there had been no “lasering” of the mortar position used to attack the CIA annex in the second phase of the assault. (That second phase occurred more than seven hours after the attack on the consulate had ended). There was no reason to use a laser in that fashion — the SEALs knew they had no air cover to intervene — and more importantly, no opportunity to do so.
Sources who have debriefed the team that was at the CIA annex the night of the attack in Benghazi say that the CIA operators from the Global Response Staff, or GRS, were equipped with Mark 48 machine guns and had two types of laser capability. Each weapon had both a “passive” as well as a “visible” laser that could be used against the Libyan attackers.
The presence of laser capability on the roof of the CIA annex confirms what Fox News sources that night in Benghazi originally said, which is that they had laser capability and for 5 hours and 15 minutes were wondering where the usual overhead air support was, especially since, according to this source, they radioed from the annex beginning as early as midnight asking for it.
The presence of lasers raises more questions about why air support was not sent to Benghazi even protectively once it became clear that the fighting had followed the CIA rescue team back to the annex.
U.S. military officials say they “thought the fighting was over” after the team left the consulate and that there was a lull in the fighting.
Whose source is reliable?

I have seen several on here blaming Obama and his policies or his stances calling him all sorts of things from dumb to weak, saying these people are dead because of him. Well pointing out a little history here on Embassy attacks.
Under President Eisenhower in 1958 the Ankara Turkey Embassy was attacked.
3 under Embassies were attacked under President Nixon (Phonm Penh, Manila and Nicosia) with a total of 3 killed.
The 1983 Beruit Embassy attack was under President Reagan’s watch which killed 63 employees and contractors total 17 being Americans. There were also 6 more Embassy attacks during his Presidency with a total of 31 more killed.
Under George HW Bush there was an RPG attack on the Bogata Embassy.
Under George W Bush there were 11 attacks on US Embassies with a total of 60 killed.
If this one is Obama’s fault because he is a “bad leader” wouldn’t you have to say all the others above were bad leaders too? Embassies were attacked under their watch and in many cases more people were lost. If not how do you justify saying Obama is responsible for this while the others weren’t when the same things happened while they were President?
