The Fox-induced hysteria over Benghazi collapses
What happens when a lie goes astray?
You may recall the right wing’s hysteria last week over the way that events had supposedly played out in Benghazi, Libya. Stoked by inflammatory, deeply irresponsible misreporting on Fox News, they insisted that this scandal was bigger than Watergate, and that for his cowardice President Obama would be disgraced as commander in chief and impeached and removed from office should he win a second term.
Oh, they were in fine, fine form, braying like so many hounds certain they have finally treed the fox.
President Obama, we were told, had AC-130 gunships within an hour of Benghazi but refused to use them to try to intervene on behalf of his ambassador. We had Special Forces units ready to go just two hours away, at Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, but a cowardly Obama again barred a rescue operation, fearful that it might endanger his re-election if it went astray.
And twice — TWICE!!! — former SEALs at a nearby CIA compound had requested permission to intervene in the assault on the U.S. consulate, but twice they had been ordered to stand down and do nothing. Finally, the ex-SEALS defied orders from Washington, made their way to the consulate and rescued some of their fellow Americans. Obama, in contrast, was ready to just let them all die.
Fox News also reported that upon returning to the CIA annex, those same ex-SEALs had “lasered” a mortar targeting their position in hopes that an AC-130 would arrive to take it out, but again no help came. That same mortar later killed two of those ex-SEALs.
But as predicted here, none of that turned out to be true. None. From beginning to end, and in all its details, that story has proved to be false.
– There were no orders from the CIA or anyone else to stand down. According to a CIA timeline released last week, once those at the CIA annex learned that the nearby consulate was under attack, an ad hoc rescue mission was quickly put together and launched within 25 minutes.
– As Pentagon spokesman George Little described it Friday, “there was no AC-130 within a continent’s range of Benghazi” that night. The closest gunship was in Afghanistan, some 2,500 miles away. The two surveillance drones that eventually reached the scene in Benghazi also had to be reassigned from elsewhere; neither was armed.
– Contrary to the Fox report, there were no Special Forces units available for insertion into the situation. Soon after word of the attack reached Washington, a special ops team was scrambled from a training facility somewhere in Central Europe — some sources have reported Croatia — and transported to Sigonella.
In addition, a second special ops unit was immediately alerted and transported from a military base here in the United States to Sigonella, as an option should a hostage situation develop. In other words, major preparations were underway to provide a military option should the opportunity arise to use it.
But as Little put it last week, the units “did not arrive until after the entire sequence of events was complete. … They were in Sigonella many hours after the attacks.” Two platoons of specially trained Marines had also been hustled to Sigonella, but again too late for intervention.
– Finally, there had been no “lasering” of the mortar position used to attack the CIA annex in the second phase of the assault. (That second phase occurred more than seven hours after the attack on the consulate had ended). There was no reason to use a laser in that fashion — the SEALs knew they had no air cover to intervene — and more importantly, no opportunity to do so.
According to the CIA, its personnel at the annex were not even aware that the mortars existed until mortar shells began falling on their position; from beginning to end, the deadly mortar attack lasted all of 11 minutes.
In conclusion, last week’s entire controversy was spectacularly, embarrassingly wrong-headed. No facts exist to justify the overheated rhetoric and allegations directed at Obama and top officials in his administration, but no apologies will follow either. Quite the contrary, I’m sure.

The real truth is, had it not been for the persistence of Fox News, we would have all believed the out and out lie about the video that the administration, with the ever so willing aid of the media, was feeding us. Just what were they trying to cover up with their continued insistence that the Benghazi violence was not terrorism? You, the complicit left wing media and all of the Obama zombies can criticize Fox all you want but at least they look beyond the image and the propaganda that America is being fed. Journalism in this country has earned a reputation as being less trusted than lawyers and politicians. Just maybe, if you guys did your jobs and actually did some true investigative reporting instead of feeding us the administrations talking points, you could once again earn the trust of the American people. I wouldn’t believe anything I read in the AJC. Even the football scores are suspect.

It’s interesting that because you don’t like FOX, everything they say is a lie. Would you also crucify CNN or MSNBC if the shoe were on the other foot? Doubtfully, because of how and what you believe you don’t think it’s possible for CNN or MSNBC to lie, they would never do that? But FOX doesn’t stand for what you believe so they are automatic liars. It works both ways people. There is nothing here that impugns Romney, even though some commenters are trying to bootstrap the FoxNews reporting to Romney. Romney was extremely circumspect in how he discussed Benghazi. I personally regret the reporting of the Benghazi incident, because it saps credibility from the GOPs quest to defeat Obama. And Obama has plenty of exposure over real issues; we don’t need Benghazi. To the commenters who act so smug about FoxNews, you might want to note that FoxNews isn’t running for president. As much as the left would like to think so, FoxNews is not a proxy for Romney. So don’t gloat so much about FoxNews’ embarrassment, lest you find you were celebrating the battle while losing the war.

No apologies will be forthcoming because the rightwing has known from the beginning that they were pedaling lies to win elections – just as Romney has spewed knowing lies about Jeep’s taking jobs from Americans for overseas jobs. Bain did that, not Jeep. Gov. Romney even doubled down on this Jeep lie after it was exposed. That shows his basic disrespect for the intelligence of, and the character of, the American people – because he does not think that the American people will be able to see what he is doing and/or because they do not care what he is doing in trying to make lies appear as truth.
Are these the leaders we want influencing our nation, with their values and their spinning of lies as reality – which they will expect every cititzen to fall neatly in line to accept as truth? Not this citizen.
I encourage all who support President Obama to turn out in large numbers, today and tomorrow, to vote for him. Even in Georgia, you can still effect his overall numbers nationally in the popular vote. Make your vote and your voice count. Do not let billionaires control the direction of our nation. It was just a YoutTube video. It had nothing to do with terrorism, but if it did, it had nothing to do with democrats talking about killing bin Laden 22 times at the convention the week before.
Benghazi was just a outgrowth of Middle East protests everywhere except in Iraq, but the Muslim Brotherhood people really like Obama and the US, they just have a funny way of showing it.

Paul: Sunday paper had an article about Africa Command (one of the unified-warfighting commands). They share a quick response team with European Command. Are mostly training-oriented. Are headquartered in Germany because of African nations’ sensibilities.
They’re the ones who would direct military ops in Libya. Article noted what Jay posted: as far as readily available assets, there weren’t any.

Fox “News” is pretty much an instrument of the Republican Party and they display the same level of integrity. I don’t know what happened to the decent people who used to be Republicans – I guess some of them still vote R and others have just died off. Our Rickster has summarized what I have felt, for over a decade, is the prime directive of Fox News. Fox News is founded on the belief that the so-called “mainstream media” (really a huge circle of corporate conglomerates) is way biased to the left, and so the only way for Fox to be “fair and balanced” is for them to be at least as biased to the right.
That is why, for example, they felt that they needed to give Mitt Romney 80 percent more airtime the week before the election than they gave Obama.
This sort of thing justifies, in the minds of the FNC viewers, what they probably know in their hearts is not “balanced” coverage at all.

Whether or not the Fox News story is false, what remains to be true is:
1. Ambassador Chris Stephens sent repeated warnings that Al Qaeda was strengthening.
2. Ambassador Chris Stephens sent repeated warnings that the consulate in Benghazi could not withstand a coordinated assault and asking for increased security.
3. Ambassador Chris Stephens sent warnings that the embassy was under attack.
4. Ambassador Chris Stephens and three others died in the assault, which was viewed in real-time by parties high up in the administration.
5. The next morning, Pres. Obama made a statement referring to an “act of terror” – then hopped on AF1 and went to a Nevada fund raiser.
7. Intelligence officials briefed administration officials and congressional leaders that they knew the attack was an organized terror attack – not a mob attack.
8. For the next two weeks, Pres. Obama, SecState Clinton, WH Spox Carney and Ambassador Rice publicly and repeatedly stated that the deaths were result of mobs enraged by an anti-Muslim video – which they knew at the time they made those statements was completely untrue.
9. True to Hillary’s word (spoken to the father of one of the dead) the film maker was arrested.
10. Ambassador Chris Stephens and three others are still dead.

This comes after he posts that funds were cut for embassy defense but FAILS TO REPORT that they were CUT BY REPUBLICAN CONGRESS. But his FOX MASTERS didn’t tell him to report that FACT that the Republicans slashed the State Department budget.
Comical, simply comical. The lack of shame they feel as they drag 4 dead Americans through the streets and through the mud in pitiful attempts to discredit our President and our Country.

I don’t know if that’s precisely true, but here is something undeniable:
MSNBC bills itself as “The Place for Politics.” This does not imply that they are trying to be objective; it subtly acknowledges that you are getting entertainment on that cable channel, mostly from the left-of-center (Rachel, Ed, Lawrence) but also from the right (Joe Scar).
FNC continues to claim it is “Fair and Balanced.” It says “We report, you decided.”
Those are very different missions, I think.

Jay, all this is true enough, and hardly surprising. Those of us who’ve been watching the right exploit this ridiculous propaganda PR outfit “FOX” masked as a journalistic organization are hardly surprised.
But aren’t you starting to become a little like MSNBC in this case, passing up deep analysis of a troubling situation for cheap points that preach to the partisan choir?
What about the revelations on Friday that major media organizations at Washington’s request concealed the fact that the supposed consulate Navy personnel were not security details but were actively working with the CIA? In fact, there were apparently more people working for the CIA at the embassy than there were embassy personnel there. This obviously had a profound effect on how the story was received broadly in the early going, but in ways that can’t easily be assimilated either into a ready-made FOX or a MSNBC-friendly narrative.
