Again, that’s just the headlines on the home page. The stories themselves are in some cases even more optimistic and confident. Longtime political analyst Michael Barone, for example, predicts a veritable Mittslide (Headline: “Prediction: Romney Beats Obama, Handily”) with Romney pulling 315 electoral votes and Obama winning 223. Barone puts North Carolina, Florida and Ohio all in the GOP column.

And Virginia, Colorado and Iowa. And New Hampshire. And Pennsylvania. And Wisconsin too.

Now, maybe the writers and editors at National Review really do think Romney is going to win tomorrow. Maybe that’s what a lot of exuberant confidence looks like.

Or, as Will Shakespeare once observed, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

Agree. My bottom line from previous blog: Just sat down with an electoral map, assumed Romney would lose Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan, but I still have him winning. I differ from Joe Trippi by giving Romney Wisconsin, Colorado, and Virginia. Those six states seem to be the ones to watch – if Obama loses as many as three of them, he loses the election, he has to take four out of six. Romney could run the table and finish with 325.

A part of me has to admire how unified the right remains, even in the face of likely defeat. Not only do many continue to predict a Romney victory, but some are going so far as to utter words like landslide. In addition to the National Review, Peggy Noonan senses a certain vibration for Mitt, George Will thinks states like Minnesota will even turn Red on the way to 321 EVs, and of course Kyle has a gut feeling.

The common thread is one that has burdened the GOP throughout this election cycle is that they are only able to view the electorate through a partisan lens and even though polls don’t support them, they believe that if Democrats and independents just hear their pitch one more time it will finally sink in and all will once again be right in the United States. How could it be any other way?

The ginormous Federal Government is like a super tanker plowing through the sea. The President’s helm is connected to a small rudder. What really steers the ship is the people’s desire for safety, security, and the easy way out. The ship will survive for a few more generations before it runs aground, but we’ll all be gone then, so why care?

I made the same point some years back about con vs lib. But… given what’s happened in the House with the Tea Party Republicans holding such power over Speaker Boehner so as to render him less than effective in many cases, and given what’s happened in the Senate with moderate Republicans being turned out, now I think it is much more of a case of Republican = conservative on the Congressional scene.

But what I’m reading from you is a zealousness that anything that does not adhere to your conservative ideology is is a threat to be eliminated. And if one can’t eliminate it, then do not compromise and stall.

Given the great issues facing this county, I think your philosophy is much more detrimental to the welfare of the county than is any possible compromise agreement that could be reached between Republicans and Democrats.

Actually 0311, I think the real battle for the republic right now is in the Republican party itself. How will the party reconcile it’s far-right takeover in recent years with it’s more moderate traditions? The battle for power within the party is far more potentially destructive to our republic, in my opinion, than one moderate Democrat could ever be.

Right now, Nate Silver is calling an 86.3% probability that Obama wins. Silver won lots of accolades from statisticians last election, well before he almost aced his predictions.

Ummmmm Earth to Stevie, that’s gonna happen regardless to who’s in the White House. The president SIGNS appropriations bills. He doesn’t write them. That’s the job of the House of Representatives, which is currently under GOP control. To date, there have been two trillion dollar deficits appropriated by each party. If we go 5 for 5 next fiscal year, the GOP will have a 3-2 advantage, yet I’m willing to bet that people like you will still pin it on the president.

The only two polls to follow is Gallup and Rasmussen where both project a dead heat close race. They project a close race both nationally and by swing state. The fat lady won’t be warming up until late tomorrow evening. I’m projecting Romney as the winner in a landslide.

Polls and Nate Silver type predictions are only a mere snapshot in time. National elections are historically surprising in the ultimate turn out and I think what we’ll see in this one is a repudiation of Obama and his far left ideology, but hey I could be wrong just like the much smarter than I, Nate Silver could be wrong. It’s getting close to game time, so we shall soon see.

The American people have given President-elect Barack Obama more than a political victory; they have given him a resounding vote of confidence and a mandate of change. In fact, as the results rolled in from across the country Tuesday night, it was impossible to escape the conclusion that dramatic change is under way already, bubbling up from an American public deeply concerned about its nation’s future and demanding a new approach.

For all of his powers of persuasion, Obama did not create that call for change. But for reasons both obvious and subtle, he has come to personify it. When he is sworn into office Jan. 20, he will become not just our first African-American president, but the first to come of age in the years after Vietnam, Watergate, feminism, the civil rights movement and other old battles that in many ways have continued to rage to this day, like an underground fire smoldering for decades in an abandoned coal mine.

Obama’s opponents in this campaign wanted to keep fighting those earlier wars, in part because they knew how to win on that terrain. They had become adept at dividing the American people into almost equal halves, ensuring that the slightly larger half would be on their side. They believed that with Obama’s race, relative youth, background and name, surely it was possible to fight and win that kind of battle one more time.

But consistently, persistently, Obama insisted on looking forward. Like the American people, he understood that this election had to be different. He saw that while we argued about morals and values instead of government and competence, the future had been slowly slipping from us. Important decisions were ignored. Critical adjustments to a changing world were set aside. As a people and a nation, we were coasting on past accomplishments, trading on the good name, wealth and power built in earlier times.

As events from Wall Street to Main Street have made clear, that course is no longer open to us. Such pettiness is a luxury of easier days and smaller challenges.

In fact, no incoming president since Franklin Roosevelt has faced a more difficult situation than that confronting Obama. The combination of military challenges and financial and economic woes will require sacrifices of a sort not asked of the American people in a generation or longer.

That task will be complicated by the fallout from this bitter election season. Every campaign stirs anger and frustration, but the emotions in this election cycle have run deeper than most. While many saw in Obama a change for the better, others have seen him as a figure to be feared. The senator from Illinois has been villified as a Marxist, a socialist, a secret Muslim and friend of terrorists. His election has even been compared by conservative political commentators to Adolf Hitler’s assumption of power in 1933.

Such talk is dangerous and irresponsible, not least because to some minds it hints that the unjustifiable can perhaps be justified after all. Less dramatically, it also suggests that even with his margin of victory, Obama may not enjoy the presumption of unity and support traditionally granted to newly elected presidents. It seems remarkable to have to state such things, but it is important that the legitimacy of Obama’s presidency be acknowledged by even his most vociferous of critics if we are to make progress.

In a country as diverse as ours, unity can be a fragile commodity. In fact, perhaps the most famous and poign-ant cry for unity in American history was ignored with tragic consequences.

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies,” Abraham Lincoln pleaded in his first inaugural address in 1861, on the eve of civil war. “Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

In our current situation, though, the more relevant example may be that set by a candidate who suffered one of the more heartbreaking defeats in U.S. history. Eight years ago, Democrat Al Gore won a plurality of the popular vote but lost the presidency after an extended and bitter legal fight.

In his gracious concession speech, Gore took as a model the words of Sen. Stephen A. Douglas to Lincoln after the 1860 election. “Partisan feeling must yield to patriotism,” Douglas told Lincoln. “I’m with you, Mr. President, and God bless you.”

“I say to President-elect Bush that what remains of partisan rancor must now be put aside,” Gore said that night, “and may God bless his stewardship of this country. … I also accept my responsibility, which I will discharge unconditionally, to honor the new president-elect and do everything possible to help him bring Americans together in fulfillment of the great vision that our Declaration of Independence defines and that our Constitution affirms and defends.”

Sen. John McCain, an American patriot, expressed similar sentiments Tuesday night, describing Obama as his former opponent and as his president. That is the way real Americans do things, here in these United States of America.

Nate’s model is based on polling data. If the repudiation of Obama was enough for him to lose, then it should be reflected in the polls. Nate’s model provides for potential polling errors, hence the 13% chance of a Romney victory, because a day out, the only way he wins is if the polls are wrong…..

The only problem with Nate Silver and his analysis is he is using the polling data as established by most of the polls and I believe they are flawed this year. Most of the major polls (besides Gallop and Rasmussen) are using the exit polls for voter turnout as it was in 2008 with Dems having 7% more turnout then Republicans.

If you believe the polls then you also believe that the Dems are more enthusiastic and will outpace Republicans by 7% in turnout. If you believe that the Republicans are more enthusiastic then you believe that Dems and Republicans will be even or slightly more Dem in the midwest union states which would have the race in a virtual tie. Now if it is tied then you have to look at the independents and they are all leaning Romney in most if not all of the swing states.

Tomorrow will tell us whose model is correct and whose is not.

I’m just waiting to see how Gary Johnson does tomorrow. Among religious conservatives who haven’t the accepted the Billy Graham blessing of Romney, Johnson’s been getting a lot of attention. It won’t matter much in the Atlanta area, but there are a lot of voters out in the peanut and cotton farms and peach groves that don’t want the cult leader getting the job any more than they want the black guy. Could be interesting to see how he moves the needle…

The kids were all asking me who I was voting for today…told ‘em I wasn’t going to tell them…several quick lessons on the secret ballot and what it means…of course, I know who THEIR parents are voting for…Obama has the Black and Latino vote, it’s neck and neck with the White, and the Asians are split between the South Asians, Obama, and the East Asians, Romney.

josef: we did a mock election at my school and of course, the kids all wanted to talk about the vote. It was interesting to discuss the secret ballot with them. God love ‘em for their passion about this though. The results were interesting- Obama actually would have lost but Johnson pulled enough votes from Romney to throw it. Makes me wonder how the rural counties will end up.

“If you believe the polls then you also believe that the Dems are more enthusiastic and will outpace Republicans by 7% in turnout. If you believe that the Republicans are more enthusiastic then you believe that Dems and Republicans will be even or slightly more Dem in the midwest union states which would have the race in a virtual tie. Now if it is tied then you have to look at the independents and they are all leaning Romney in most if not all of the swing states.

I think the understanding of Silver and most pollsters is a little different. If I understand it correctly, they believe that large numbers of people who used to call themselves Republicans have dropped that self-identity and now call themselves independent. If true, that would account for both the decline in Republicans in the polls AND the propensity of self-identified independents to vote for Romney.

If that’s correct, Obama wins. If it’s not correct, anything could happen.

I can see reason in part of what you are saying about Republicans calling themselves Independents but there is a flaw in the argument because some of the polls that have Obama up 4 or 5 points have more people calling themselves Dems now then did in the exit polls in 2008 when there was a landslide victory for Dems in the election. If you believe these polls then you will believe that the Dems are going to sweep the house, senate and President like they did again in 2008 and from reading some of your material I do not think you believe this.

My Great Granny was a sufragette and so was my Granny…Great Granny died in 1918 and never got a chance to vote. Granny did. A Yellow Dog Democrat her life long, cast her last vote for Jimmy Carter, and like yours part of her reason was she’d vote for those that gave her the vote. The other part was that she’d never vote for the Party of the Diocletian of the Potomac and would curse anybody who did. Lived to see three Southern Democrats at 1600. I won’t say who I’m voting for, but you can rest assured it won’t be the GOP…the last thing I’m up for is her gray ghost rising to smite me! :-)

Well, either way it goes the Convert household wins tomorrow. ‘Cause we’ll be rid of those awful ads on TV. I just hate this foreign guy named Peterffy or something like and how he talks about how awful Socialism is and acts like that’s the choice tomorrow. Maybe I’m biased, because I hate foreigners and especially the ones that can’t speak redneck English. Then there’s that awful one where the woman in the million buck house talks about how hard it is to get by under Obama and how many promises he broke and how much in debt her rich little grandkids are going to be, and I’m thinking, “Y’a know, if I was rich enough to live in a house like that, even King Herod in the White House would look pretty good to me.” Sometimes I just wish all the lyin’ lawyer ads would return, where some smug a-hole tells about winning $350,000 in a suit and how you shouldn’t trust other lawyers.

Anyhow, tomorrow night is going to be a double-case night, and I’m buying an extra two bags of fried pork skins. I’m going to buy a fan ’cause old Ace is stopped up and sometimes the smell gets pretty gross when he rips a big one.

I am reminded of an incident from my boyhood.
My brother who is a few yrs older and I were fighting over the last two pieces of Halloween candy. A 3 Musketeers (YUM) and a Butterfinger (YUCK). Both of us wanted the 3 Musketeers.
Eventually the tussle and whining caught the ear of Mother. She came in and we both pled our cause.

Her decision? She gave us 30 seconds to figure it out. Barring that, both pieces were going into the trash.

It took us about 5 seconds to decide that we take half of each piece of candy.
Neither side completely happy, but neither side denied. And we found out that Butterfingers weren’t really all that bad.

People forget too quickly how far we have come. GA Tech and Emory first intergated in the 60s. Roe v. Wade ruling dates to the early 70s. Soon we will have equality when it comes to marriage. There is another angle that everyone seem to have overlooked in this Presidential campaign… Republican/Independent 3rd party candidate Gary Johnson, who is on the ballot in 48 states is polling at about 5 % in all the battleground states… In addition to that fact, there are two other “righty” candidates on the ballots in most of the states… It is my contention that the news media will begin predicting an Obama victory as soon as the first polls close…

Already been working for 45 minutes or so. (Thank god for coffee!) Due to an infinitely better economy than four years ago, I have LOTS of work to do today, and along with voting, the bank, etc. I’m gonna be one busy guy!

Unlike our right-wing neo-fascists (12?), I heartily encourage ALL Americans to get off of their butts and vote today. THAT is what scares the plutocrats and their GOP (primarily) trickled-on (not down) sycophants – an empowered and emboldened citizenry.

As for the results?

The neocons lost the White House four years ago. Deservedly so, thanks to the worst administration and ideology in a hundred years. They will not retake it today. And I suspect that the road ahead for them in 2016 and 2020 is equally daunting.

I also predict that both of the stupid referendums on the state ballot will likely pass.
