Peggy’s story: The cruel cynicism of the voter ID crusade

Hans von Spakovsky, a former Fulton County Republican party official and now a star of the right’s nationwide effort to suppress voting through strict voter ID protocols, continues to pretend that in-person voting fraud constitutes a major threat to American democracy.

Yet when challenged to present evidence of such a threat, as he was in a recent article in The New Yorker, he continues to fail.

For example, in responding to the New Yorker article, von Spakovsky listed a series of recent alleged voting fraud cases that to his mind justified the expense, bureaucracy and obstacles to voting created by voter ID laws. They were:

——————-

– the Democratic nominee for Maryland’s first congressional district removed from the ballot after it was discovered that she had registered and voted in both Maryland and Florida in the 2006 and 2008 elections;

– an Arkansas legislator resigning after pleading guilty (with three other defendants) to committing voter fraud;

– a Canadian couple and a Mexican citizen arrested for illegally registering and voting in Iowa;

– a New Jersey resident convicted on multiple counts of voter fraud;

– three Indiana residents (including a former Democratic mayoral candidate) indicted for voter fraud;

– three Ohioans indicted for double voting;

– a Mexican drug dealer’s guilty plea for voting illegally in the 2008 presidential election;

– Florida’s discovery of nearly 200 non-citizens illegally registered to vote, and

– a city-council race in Vernon, Calif., overturned owing to voter fraud.

——————-

That’s the best he could do?

Once again, none of the examples could have been prevented through voter ID. Requiring a drivers license to vote, for example, does nothing to prevent non-citizens from voting because citizenship is not noted on the license.

Also note that none of the examples cited by von Spakovsky involved an organized effort to alter an election through fraudulent in-person voting. Several involved absentee balloting, the easiest and most popular way to abuse the electoral process. However, it is noteworthy that the Republican Party has in general tried to expand absentee voting without tightening oversight because that’s the means that many of its own voters tend to prefer.

Peggy Cobb

Peggy Cobb

Which brings us to the story of 97-year-old Peggy Cobb of Sandy Springs, as related in an email from her son Bill:

——————-

“I now have a crystal clear, visceral understanding of why some politicians think voter ID laws are so important. The suppressive power of this law to deter people from voting is far greater than I realized. Meet my mother.

She is 97, in good health and with virtually all her marbles (bad hearing loss, though), living an active, independent life in Sandy Springs. She moved here four years ago or so. Had one knee replaced a couple years ago.

Peggy has voted in every presidential election since she was eligible, and most if not all others, too. She pays attention to this stuff more than a lot of people I know. She insists, often with me chafing, on hearing the other side.

She has a Fulton County voter registration card and has voted in every election when she’s been here. Her expired Indiana driver’s license used to be enough ID at the polling booth. No more.

But all she had to do was go to a driver’s services office, show the necessary documents, and get her Georgia Voter ID. Some waiting. No fees. Great deal.

So Peggy gathered up her voter registration card, some utility bills, bank statements, rent receipts and tax returns and went to Driver Services. They said “Great, you have everything you need. Except a birth certificate.”

She went back home and eventually figured out how to order a birth certificate from Minnesota, where she was born and married. Six weeks later, it arrived. Peggy returned to Drivers Services very enthusiastic, since the election was only a couple weeks off. They said “Great, you have everything you need, except the last name on your birth certificate isn’t the same as on all these other documents.”

Well of course not, she got married in 1943. What else could that middle initial “V” stand for except her maiden name, Vanstrom?

No Georgia voter ID card for Peggy without a marriage certificate.

I rarely ever see my mother near tears, but I did then. Some combination of rage and foreboding maybe. Luckily, the Minnesota county that has her marriage certificate is very user friendly. They even do same day turn-around and overnight delivery, if you pay for it. Time was short. $53. But UPS screwed up and misdelivered it, so Minnesota sent another one (no charge) to my house. My wife and I made sure one of us was home all day to sign for it.

Yesterday, back to Drivers Services. A friend drove her. They said, “Great, you have everything you need, except your Social Security number doesn’t match our system. Sorry, no exceptions.”

The friend, who had only bargained for lunch really, drove Peggy home to search for more papers with her Social Security number on it, then drove her to a Social Security office in Marietta. The agent could find nothing amiss, and gave her some papers.

Drivers Services finally relented and gave Peggy a Georgia voter ID yesterday, 5 days before the election. What would she have done without that determined friend?

You probably can’t truly appreciate the physical and emotion toll this ordeal has taken on Peggy. She definitely can’t believe it.

“Why is Georgia doing this to me! Do they want me not to be here? I thought government was supposed to make voting as simple as possible. I don’t understand it!”

I explained the reason for Georgia’s anti-fraud requirements with a joke I heard a long time ago. It begins with a guy standing around constantly snapping his fingers.

“Why are you doing that?” someone asked.

“I’m keeping the elephants away.”

“What? There’s never been an elephant within a thousand miles of here!”

“See, it’s working.”

The reality, of course, is much more mean-spirited and pernicious. Peggy got the joke right away. But she’s still not happy. It’s not funny. At all.

——————-

No, Peggy’s not happy. In a later message, she herself spoke of her frustration with what she calls “Beautiful Georgia, my adopted state as I finish life’s journey.” Voting absentee, she says, “seemed sensible.” But on the other hand, she wanted to once again feel the excitement of voting in person, on Election Day.

“This year 2012 held new significance … my last year ever to vote in a presidential election. I wanted to feel part of this great privilege, wanted to again walk out of my precinct tapping my Georgia Peach voter sticker. Even if the day were dark, gloomy and cold, the sun would be shining.”

But “government intrusion stripped me of my established legal right to vote in 2012 unless I complied with new restriction laws…. I will vote in person on Nov. 6 but my spirit is broken. Trust in the government of my adopted state is shattered, a cruel joke.”

The right to bear arms is also protected as a fundamental right under the Second Amendment, but liberals have no issue with modest restrictions of that right (yes, showing ID is one requirement.) Abortion is yet another right liberals cite as being protected under the Constitution, and I’m fairly certain ID is required (age verification). My point is that it is ridiculous to assert that showing ID to vote simply as identity and citizenship verification places an unfair burden on the voter.

One party thinks the very word government a huge joke. This is yet another example of just how far they’ll go to prove their point. I’m from the government and I’m and I’m here to help you used to crack people up when Reagan would say it. Somehow it doesn’t seem so funny anymore. I guess some guys just can’t tell a joke. Peggy’s not laughing, and she’s got a lot of company.

I don’t know how many straw man arguments like the oh-so-wittily sockpupped “Tax andspend”’s were made in this thread, but for the record, I (and many others like me) have no problem with the sort of reasonable verification that had been in place and working just fine-and-dandy for years before the Republicans got hold of this idiotic, short-sighted notion that they would benefit from placing onerous requirements on american citizens.

As I’ve mentioned time and again, all I ever had to do in NJ was sign a form, and a registrar checked the signature against that which was on file. Other verifications that had been ok in the past were utility bills. The notion that a middle initial might disqualify you, or something along those lines, should make any patriotic American furious.

And it speaks volumes for how un-American some of the GOP partisans have become on this issue.

Simple Man: Jay, I go to church with a woman who is here illegally (parents brought her). She is a black single mother. She told me that she has voted in the last three elections and will vote Obama in this election. She said that even though he is opposed to most of her principles they share the same skin color and that’s something I just wouldn’t understand. So, there you go. A real life story as valid as yours.

Simple, if you must LIE to prove a point, (aka Mitt Romney), then you have not proven anything other than the fact that you are a liar.

gogators: aiting for Jays blog on how the residents of NY and NJ feel about the regimes handling fo the Sandy response

Why not ask a more salient and poignant question – How do those people feel about their STATE’s Governor (both repugs i think), handling of the situation.

It’s might funny that things that should be attributed to the sates’ governors, like THEIR inability to generate jobs in THEIR state — or THEIR inability to balance THEIR budget, are placed at Obama’s door.

You repugs should take responsibility for your own actions.

stands, here in georgia everything is now electronic. there’s no way a person can vote more than once because when you go and get your ballot they check in the computer to see if you’ve already voted. If you have, no ballot.

As for the new I.D. laws, georgia could’ve simply started the implementation slowly over a period of a few years so as not to have people like Miss Peggy go through a nightmare like this. Needless to say, every manager I’ve ever worked for regularly practiced every one of these “not’s”

Their bosses were only interested in results, and, as long as cruelty and browbeating got it done, they looked the other way.

Romney is one of these cruel Big Business types and, since I hate these people so much, if he’s elected I’ll never consider him my President.

Liberals always believe that someone is trying to keep them from doing something, especially if it involves a minority or some old person, and that they must champion some cause to make things “equal” or “fair”. They seem to pick pet causes, like voting registration or voting “disenfranchisment”, if that is a word, as one of their stellar pet peeves and it is always that evil white guy or that Koch Bros Republican that is standing at the polling booth with his big bank account keeping the little guy from performing his civic duty, especially if the voter is black or old. In a liberal view, it seems that anyone who shows up at the polls should be able to vote, whether he is entitled to vote or not. Keeping some illegal immigrant from voting is just not “fair”. “It is is just not fair to expect a person to obtain a picture ID to vote”. It is just “too much trouble”, “inconvenient” or “expensive” to expect someone to comply with state laws and prove to the polling persons that they should be at the polls at all. The many venues that require a picture ID are legend in our society. And voting should be at the top of the list.

TP from your link:

Baumhower said he’s used to hearing politicians promise that the economy will get better under them and would be worse under their opponent — that, after all, is generally the driving message behind a campaign (along with gay marriage and abortion). But what he saw from Romney was something new.

“I don’t think I’ve ever really seen people running for political office threaten people with their employment,” he told HuffPost. “It might be fair game for somebody to say, I can improve the economy. I can grow the jobs market and you’ll have more opportunities under me than the other guy. I’ve heard that. I don’t think I’ve heard anybody come out like this and say: ‘You’re going to lose your jobs if you don’t vote for me.’ Pretty ridiculous. But he did.”

Since all the “Big Businesses” want me to vote for Romney, if I was one of their employees, I”d do just the opposite and vote for Obama.

After you’ve seen millions of your friends, co-workers and family laid off by “Big Business” while they smiled and lied to them about how valuable they were to the company — i wouldn’t believe a damn word they had to say.

And if THEY’RE FOR ROMNEY, then you should KNOW they are NOT for you.

“There was only one trouble with these assessments. They weren’t true. African Americans, as a group, are far worse off now than they were when Obama came to power and the gap between whites and blacks in terms of wealth and income has increased under Obama’s tenure. The overall rate of unemployment may be close to where it was when Obama took office, but black unemployment is up 11%. Meanwhile the wealth gap has doubled during this recession with the average white American now having 22 times more wealth than their black counterparts. So too has the educational achievement gap with the rate at which white Americans graduate from high school growing at a far faster clip than black students.”

As of today, six days after “hurricane Sandy” did its thing, millions of people are without food, water, shelter, clothing, medical help, sanitation facilities and hope. Compared to Katrina, when our Coast Guard was rescuing people within hours, we all watched them in action rescuing people off of roofs by helicopter and in boats, within hours of the levees being breached. Compare that to bodies still being found in the streets of New Jersy and New York. Within six days FEMA was all over New Orleans with food, water and shelter. Hurricane Sandy? Where is FEMA? I heard they are riding around in their pretty yellow shirts with clip boards taking notes. I heard they had established a web site to keep the victims posted on what they are doing without considering the victims have no electricity. The latest? FEMA won’t have water until Monday! Monday! I guess they don’t work week ends. Where is Obama? All talk, no action. Romney did more for the victims when he collected a few cans of food at one of his rallys. All we get from Obama is more BS.

I guess the clowns are out and about early this a.m.:

seems to me the african american’s vote for him because he is black…

Oh the stoooopid it burns it burns!!!!!

Clinton actually got historically low black support relative to other DEMS…

IF you must LIE to prove a point, the only point that you’ve proven is that you’re a liar. And a republican……

Here’s a great example of how repuglicans love to rewrite history from Mighty Silly:

millions of people are without food, water, shelter, clothing, medical help, sanitation facilities and hope. Compared to Katrina, when our Coast Guard was rescuing people within hours, we all watched them in action rescuing people off of roofs by helicopter and in boats, within hours of the levees being breached.

96% will continue to support BO regardless of 27 year high unemployment?

here’s a solid for you and a guess what:

Guess what? Obama does not HIRE anyone; those companies that are making billions daily do. Solid. :roll:

you show your foolishness and your wish to cheat the system with dead voters and multiple votes per person

This is exactly why these laws are insane. Anyone, liberal or conservative, who can see the ordeal Peggy went through and not find our system of voter registration horribly flawed is either delusional or simply heartless. In person voter fraud has NEVER been proven to be an issue in this country. It’s a belief that, much like those people who think the earth really is only 6000 years old, is rooted in mythology and faith. No facts exist to support it. Hopefully these attempts will allow Republicans to extend their stay in power a few years beyond its expiration date. Eventually population demographic shifts will erase ultra-conservatives from most of this country. Then maybe the old, rational, moderate Republican party will emerge from its cocoon and we can again have a sane back and forth between the two major parties in this nation. Hope I live to see that day.

I will repeat this for the third time and maybe someone on here will be able to comprehend it.
Google is your fuc*ing friend. On or about Oct 27th, 2010 Jay wrote an article that there was never any proven voter fraud in the US. If you Google voter fraud you will find that 18 people were found guilty of voter fraud and several of them went to jail afted being convicted.
I even listed several of their names.
To date, Jay the blogger, will not admit that he lied to you and the libs on here won’t acknowledge the truth either.
They would rather believe a liar who has an extreme liberal agenda, how pathetis!

Again GOOGLE is your FUC*ING friend, use it.

Tuesday cannot come soon enough. I prefer to vote on Election Day, yes. And I have no problem showing valid proof of who I am.

There would be no problem with voting or for that matter no discussion of voter fraud if it hadn’t been for Democrat collusion in voter fraud.

Democrats are the quintessential snake oil salesmen and greasy get-things-done political party. They are the ones who vote from the dead and they are the ones who rail against rules to make voter fraud difficult for unlawful voters. Democrats prescribe to the rule whereby “if you can beat the Republicans fairly, then cheat”. Democrats got caught red-handed with A.C.O.R.N and the Democrats have used the corrupt pit bull DOJ to sue states from cleaning up voter register rolls. Think about it for God’s sake!

The Democrat Party is the problem and its supporting voters are the problem. The only way for the Democrat Party to pass its kooky agenda is through voter fraud and the liberal court system. Fair minded voters will never pass liberal ideology. You get the point? Enough with the hand wringing and disdain for lawful oversight. You people caused the problem.

Guess what? Obama does not HIRE anyone; those companies that are making billions daily do.

This statement contradicts Obama himself. He claims over and over to having created either two million jobs or five million jobs depending on which lie he is using at the time. He ignores the fact that there are fewer people working today than the day he took office. His incorrect math was on display Friday when he claimed he added 171,000 jobs during the month od October. While that is true he left out the fact that 170,000 others lost their jobs making a net gain of 1,000 jobs for the month which is why in spite of his claims of two million or five million jobs being created unemployed has increased during his term. But the teleprompters make him sound intelligent and the air heads believe.

He has SAVED jobs by saving the auto industry and he’s also signed into law a jobs initiative package which he gave to the STATES to handle.

Some states, like TEXAS and FLORIDA, used their money to balance their budgets — NOT to create jobs.

Why don’t any of you repugs EVAH criticize the republican led STATE officials in your states for THEIR mismanagement?

Too hard for you guys to tell the truth at least once OR to own up to your own inefficiencies and lies?

It appears the US Constitution, First Amendment and the 14th Amendment, clearly states that voting is a right, not a privilege

Many seem to feel that we should have poll taxes and qualifications tests in order to vote.

Please read the posted article that clearly states both actions are unconstitutional.

Aside from the inherent racism involved in that statement, the second part
“I imagine most illegals know who to go to for a SS card, driver’s license, etc.”
has a modicum of truth to it…and, no, you’re not the only one who knows it…what documents do you need, how much are you willing to pay, when do you need them? What type of potential inspection will they have to pass?”

My post is factual. I guess, for you, some facts are just too painful to accept and crying “racism” eases the pain.

You made that the attribution of such to “Mexicans,” equating such fraud to a single class of people. That’s the inherent racism. You could have just as easily made the point using any other group of people. You might have said Russians, Israelis, Nigerians, Romany, Iranis, or Bulgarians, classes who have some expertise in producing fake documents.
Yes, inherent racism in the presentation of “the truth.” You are getting your tail feathers in a ruff over “some facts are just to painful” when applied to you.

@indigo 9:15- then pray tell and enlighten us all as to the expert knowledge you have of how it’s done. The best we can do is speculate, unless you have done it yourself. I never said it can’t be done or isn’t being done- but where’s the proof? How would you go about it? It’s not like you go on Craigslist or find it at some mall kiosk. How then does one get such illegal paperwork?

Sheesh…just because you “know” it’s happening or read about it on breitbart.com or Fox doesn’t make it so. Some folks “know” there are aliens abducting them and poking them with anal probes. We call them crazy.

“Democrats got caught red-handed with A.C.O.R.N ”

Exactly what did they get caught with? A few disinterested voter registration folks making up names or something, if I recall. That “scandal” didn’t last long and isn’t any worse than this:
“On Monday, North Carolina election officials became the latest to announce they were taking a closer look at the unfolding voter registration scandal surrounding a notorious Republican consulting firm hired to sign up new voters in five key election states; Florida, Colorado, Virginia, Nevada and North Carolina.

The firm made headlines last week when potentially fraudulent registration forms were flagged in “at least 11″ Florida counties, all submitted by the state Republican Party and collected by Strategic Allied Consulting. The firm is run by GOP operative Nathan Sproul, a former head of the Arizona Christian Coalition and the Arizona Republican Party.

At the center of the controversy are recently submitted registration forms deemed to be “questionable” by states elections officials. The suspicion surrounds “similar-looking signatures, missing information and wrong addresses on the forms,” according to the Palm Beach Post. (In the wake of allegations, the Republican Party of Florida, North Carolina, and Colorado pulled the plug on Sproul’s voter registration project. The Republican National Committee has also reportedly cut ties with the firm.)”

How many actual cases of voter fraud did they find with ACORN? Who got convicted?

Roxanne Rubin, Nevada Republican, Arrested For Allegedly Trying To Vote Twice

Investigators today arrested a Southern Nevada woman suspected of trying to vote twice this week at two different polling locations.

Roxanne Rubin was taken into custody as she arrived for work at the Riviera hotel-casino, investigators said. Rubin, 56, is a registered Republican who lives in Henderson, according to the Clark County Registrar.

Rubin allegedly cast a vote Monday at the Anthem Community Center in Henderson. Later that day, she tried to vote a second time at an early voting location on Eastern Avenue, investigators said.
