Some travelin’ home music for a good cause

As a rule, actors who dabble as musicians do about as well as actors who dabble in politics. Which usually isn’t very well at all.

I wouldn’t try to argue that Gary Sinese is some profound exception to the rule, but he’s put together a more-than-competent cover band that calls itself the Lt. Dan Band, after the character played by Sinese in “Forrest Gump”.

If you recall the movie, Lt. Dan loses both legs in Vietnam but is eventually fitted out with prosthetic limbs, leading to that fateful moment in the movie when a startled Forrest exclaims — all together now! — “Lieutenant Dan! You got new legs! New legs!”

These days, when his schedule allows, Sinese travels with the Lt. Dan Band raising money to help disabled veterans. He and the band will play tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, with proceeds used to help build custom-designed homes in the Atlanta area for Marine Cpl. Todd Love, who lost three limbs in Afghanistan, and for Army Specialist First Class Mike Schlitz, who lost two limbs and was burned badly in an IED blast in Iraq.

Here’s the Lt. Dan Band and Sinese, a native of the Chicago area, performing the much-covered Robert Johnson classic “Sweet Home, Chicago.”

I liked Sinese in the Forrest Gump movies, especially the 2nd one. You know the one where Lt. Dan was going to go to the moon with Forrest but he got sick and couldn’t go. And then the space ship blew up and it was a good thing that Lt. Dan didn’t go after all because he was able to tell Forrest and the others how to get home. Something like that.

Bloomberg is an idiot. While the people of his city are suffering from fuel and food shortages he takes time out of his busy day to endorse Obama for his climate change stance and to say that the NY marathon will go on. New Yorkers are getting pissed off as well they should be and I think there is going to be hell to pay both locally and nationally. Bloomberg is the typical liberal; he delves on the most un-important ideological things while ignoring the suffering of his own people. He is so far removed from his constituents it is sad as he lives in a world of cocktail parties and “interesting” conversations about whatever ussues his fellow liberals seem to think important such as climate change or obesity amongst the proletariat. Yea, those are both real important when somebody can’t stay warm or doesn’t have anything to eat.

Update: now Bloomberg cancels the NY marathon. The fact that he wanted it to be held in the first place makes him look like the “blooming” idiot he is. And where is Obama while these people are standing in line wanting to stay warm and to have food? He flew in, had his political photo-op with Christy and flew out again to Ohio. Obama has no compassion for these people. He only has compassion for those people that he can use to further his agenda. He proved that with the Memphis floods and the Alabama tornadoes.

pogo – I guess you don’t think there is any global warming and that weather patterns are changing and sea levels will rise, but there are tons of scientists that disagree. Bloomberg’s city will be greatly affected if they are right, so he’s doing what’s best for his consituancy. I believe he also praised some of Obama’s social policies which go against the GOP’s platform, but are largely supported by those who live in NY. Also, I’m sure he hasn’t missed a beat on trying to get food, water, shelter and power to those who need it.

Oh, and, pogo, the only Memphis flood in recent history was where a couple of mobile homes got wet north of town and some riverside streets went under a foot or so of water. Reporters came from far and wide only to find out that Memphis is on a river bluff and it doesn’t flood too easily. They and their camerafolks waded out to what water they could find. I felt so sorry for the camerafolks.

Now, you’re the one implying there’s something distasteful about mobile homes – I just said they were the main victims of the flood. I don’t know what you’ve got against them or those who live in them. There may have been a couple of other homes on Mud Island that got nipped and a few cars parked on the bluff, but it was in no way a natural disaster worthy of presidential attention, as implied by pogo. The Pyramid didn’t even flood and it’s right on the river. Go to Memphis some time. Great BBQ – best in the nation.

I did Google the images before responding and didn’t see much that I didn’t recall from the time. Sorry if I offended on the flood, but got drawn in (yeah, stupid) by an earlier comment that Obama didn’t show compassion after the Memphis flood. Nope, news to me, heahten.

But wow. Two killer bands…

I did find this:

The line, “Turn up The Eagles; the neighbors are listening” was inspired by Walter Becker’s girlfriend, who loved the Eagles. A year later, the Eagles returned the favor on “Hotel California” with the line, “They stab it with their steely knives but they just can’t kill the beast.” (thanks, Seth – Brooklyn, NY)

According to Glenn Frey’s liner notes for The Very Best of Eagles, the use of the word “steely” in the lyric (referring to knives) was a playful nod to band Steely Dan, who had included the lyric “Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening” in their song “Everything You Did.”

So take THAT, Fred. And don’t bother to point out that maybe he wasn’t driving. Even at 93, the man BRINGS IT. You are most welcome, Gmare. I saw Dave Brubeck in his late 80s, a few years back, perform at Emory. He will be 92 in December. He walked out on stage like a feeble old man, but when he sat at the piano and played those keys, he truly became 30 again in energy and impact, and his music was as mesmerizing as ever. He “brought it,” too, because of heart.

I’ll have you in my thoughts and prayers on Monday, Gmare, while I am undergoing my root canal.

If this country (& especially the Republicans/right wingers) actually & truly cared about our veterans the Federal Government in the form of the Veterans Administration would build these homes and otherwise provide for the necessities of these lives which were so drastically changed by service to the cause of Freedom and the Tree of Liberty. Oh wait, I guess that is one of the things that Romney & his ilk think can be sent back to the states and the people. I realize it is barbaric sounding but wish that 1 of his sons would get injured in this way. It would be interesting to see how his internal etch-a-sketch redraws that one!

Seems to me a passion play is being product in NY that plays into the reality of the 1% versus the masses. As the reporters grind on about outlying middle class neighborhoods at each others throats over the gas or electricity it can’t help to be noticed that the wall of high raises are lite up in the background. Two hospitals in NY had their generators go out, babies being hand feed oxygen, yet Goldman is lite up like a Christmas tree never going out. A race run as the social event through the five borrows of NY ignoring the plight of the neighborhoods draining resources of generators and police. A woman running this event says with heavy heart we have decided to postpone this event like her burden is anything compared to the ones in the darkest of New York. There is nothing like a crisis to show the rear end of this country, to reexamine our priorities, to get a dose of reality. You can spend billions to spin the smells into an aroma and then one storm every few years puts us back to the reality of how some people care while others don’t. Some think we are a community and others think they do it by themselves, with lip service to the cake eaters.

Hate to break the news to you, but radical muslims are already at war with us. Leaving Afganistan and Iraq is not going to make them stop attacking our people all over the world and plotting another 9/11. They don’t care if our president has a D or an R after their name, don’t care if we’re in Libya, Kuwait, or anywhere else on the planet, the’re still going to plot to kill as many of us as they can.

There is a domestic gang very much like the Afghanistan and Iraq crowd, out to get us too. How you roll in bed with night mares about Arabians when you may have witness a terrorist plot at your own Waffle House by a gathering of rednecks is beyond me. Hell you may have rallied this evil group spreading your paranoid interpretations of what you blindly perceive as truth, in essence joined a terrorist organization yourself. Maybe they will roll you off to Cuba and water board you to the point of confession, that you have aided and abided the enemy. That is what happens when you lose your patriotism and share it with people, when you become obstructionist, in the right of way of lies and religion. Better keep that door locked and the gun loaded, they are coming to get you.

If I have to choose between a crazy person coming after me with an AK-47 or a knife, I choose knife.

In case someone hasn’t already posted this:

NORMAL LIBERAL VS. CONSERVATIVE DOUBLE STANDARD:

“Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time Friday might have said one of the most disgraceful things uttered during the 2012 campaign season.

“If you’re thinking about voting for Mitt Romney, I would like to make this one plea: black people know who you are and they will come after you”

Imagine for a moment the outrage if a conservative commentator said even jokingly to Obama supporters, “White people know who you are and they will come after you.”

That would be the end of that person’s career. Period. No questions asked. Done!

But Maher who’s adored by the Obama-loving media can say this with total impunity.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: HBO should be ashamed to have this disgusting man as one of its on air personalities. Period. End of story.”

“When civilized man can no longer stand the horror of war and refuses to fight,
then he will surely be killed or enslaved by the uncivilized who can.”

Why do we distrust republicans so? I just spent three hours in line for early voting, yes got up at 6 am to do my civic duty, one hour before the polls opened. Arrived at 6:30 and the line was wrapped around the building! The republicans that control our legislature got 11 state referendums on the ballot which was 10 pages long!!!! Unfrickenbelieveable…what a tactic,,discourage voting…yes that’s the way to win by default…unfortunately for them they will fail because the people know the stakes and they are showing up in force; in my neck of the woods not to damn many for romney…thank the lord…
