Some travelin’ home music for a good cause

As a rule, actors who dabble as musicians do about as well as actors who dabble in politics. Which usually isn’t very well at all.

I wouldn’t try to argue that Gary Sinese is some profound exception to the rule, but he’s put together a more-than-competent cover band that calls itself the Lt. Dan Band, after the character played by Sinese in “Forrest Gump”.

If you recall the movie, Lt. Dan loses both legs in Vietnam but is eventually fitted out with prosthetic limbs, leading to that fateful moment in the movie when a startled Forrest exclaims — all together now! — “Lieutenant Dan! You got new legs! New legs!”

These days, when his schedule allows, Sinese travels with the Lt. Dan Band raising money to help disabled veterans. He and the band will play tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, with proceeds used to help build custom-designed homes in the Atlanta area for Marine Cpl. Todd Love, who lost three limbs in Afghanistan, and for Army Specialist First Class Mike Schlitz, who lost two limbs and was burned badly in an IED blast in Iraq.

Here’s the Lt. Dan Band and Sinese, a native of the Chicago area, performing the much-covered Robert Johnson classic “Sweet Home, Chicago.”

Nice observation and there’s a lot of movies like that. The Big Chill was one where I never really cared one way or another about the movie but loved the soundtrack. Somebody should market a box set of the soundtrack from the TV series Cold Case and it would make a fortune.

Wow, Mary Elizabeth! Thank you for that video. You rock, my dear. As for Seeger, another WOW. He was 90 in that video. I’ve since seen him on another show – Stewart, Colbert? singing & rocking at 93. So take THAT, Fred. And don’t bother to point out that maybe he wasn’t driving. Even at 93, the man BRINGS IT. I hope someday you might do the same, tho I must surmise that you will not because you do not have the heart, the caring, the belief in a united USA that drives Pete Seeger.

You are most welcome, Gmare. I saw Dave Brubeck in his late 80s, a few years back, perform at Emory. He will be 92 in December. He walked out on stage like a feeble old man, but when he sat at the piano and played those keys, he truly became 30 again in energy and impact, and his music was as mesmerizing as ever. He “brought it,” too, because of heart.

I’ll have you in my thoughts and prayers on Monday, Gmare, while I am undergoing my root canal.

If this country (& especially the Republicans/right wingers) actually & truly cared about our veterans the Federal Government in the form of the Veterans Administration would build these homes and otherwise provide for the necessities of these lives which were so drastically changed by service to the cause of Freedom and the Tree of Liberty. Oh wait, I guess that is one of the things that Romney & his ilk think can be sent back to the states and the people. I realize it is barbaric sounding but wish that 1 of his sons would get injured in this way. It would be interesting to see how his internal etch-a-sketch redraws that one!

Seems to me a passion play is being product in NY that plays into the reality of the 1% versus the masses. As the reporters grind on about outlying middle class neighborhoods at each others throats over the gas or electricity it can’t help to be noticed that the wall of high raises are lite up in the background. Two hospitals in NY had their generators go out, babies being hand feed oxygen, yet Goldman is lite up like a Christmas tree never going out. A race run as the social event through the five borrows of NY ignoring the plight of the neighborhoods draining resources of generators and police. A woman running this event says with heavy heart we have decided to postpone this event like her burden is anything compared to the ones in the darkest of New York. There is nothing like a crisis to show the rear end of this country, to reexamine our priorities, to get a dose of reality. You can spend billions to spin the smells into an aroma and then one storm every few years puts us back to the reality of how some people care while others don’t. Some think we are a community and others think they do it by themselves, with lip service to the cake eaters.

Hate to break the news to you, but radical muslims are already at war with us. Leaving Afganistan and Iraq is not going to make them stop attacking our people all over the world and plotting another 9/11. They don’t care if our president has a D or an R after their name, don’t care if we’re in Libya, Kuwait, or anywhere else on the planet, the’re still going to plot to kill as many of us as they can.

There is a domestic gang very much like the Afghanistan and Iraq crowd, out to get us too. How you roll in bed with night mares about Arabians when you may have witness a terrorist plot at your own Waffle House by a gathering of rednecks is beyond me. Hell you may have rallied this evil group spreading your paranoid interpretations of what you blindly perceive as truth, in essence joined a terrorist organization yourself. Maybe they will roll you off to Cuba and water board you to the point of confession, that you have aided and abided the enemy. That is what happens when you lose your patriotism and share it with people, when you become obstructionist, in the right of way of lies and religion. Better keep that door locked and the gun loaded, they are coming to get you.
