Last pre-election jobs numbers look solid, encouraging

The final jobs numbers of the election season, released just before the final weekend of the election season, show that “Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 171,000 in October, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 7.9 percent,” according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That job growth is slightly higher than the 2012 average growth of 157,000 per month.

Adding to the optimism, August job growth was revised upward from the reported 142,000 to the more current 192,000, and job growth for September was also revised upward from 114,000 to 148,000.

Dead beat dads……. plenty of dead beat mamas out there too – unfortunately. I’m taking care of two beautiful children now that were abandoned by their dead beat, drug addict mama…. And to think we have a Prez that “experimented with croakcaine. Could he be “experimenting” while in office? Perhaps this is the explanation for Obama’s strange behavior in his 1st debate? Can we have random drug testing for the Prez?

Jay, you missed your calling. Instead of working for peanuts as an insignificant columnist for a second rate, dying newspaper you could have made a fortune as a late night comedian. In September with the “reported” unemployment rate drop a couple of points you reported it was sign of a big improvement in the economy, while this months report is an increase odf a similar amount in the unemployment rate is “unchanged”. While you continue to hide news about Benghazi, the scandal mounts. Catherine Herridge may very well get a Pultizer for reporting this scandal while the “don’t ask don’t tell” left pretends americans did not die as the result if the presidents inaction. The scandal includes the fawning left wing media who in my opinion are traitors to the principals on which this country was founded. Meanwhile, millions of people in New Jersey ansd New York are starving with out electricity and gasoline. Obama’s useless photo ops are over and very little is being accomplished at the federal level.

Rags,

No weeping, but for your biased view of the collapse blaming the CRA and Fannie and Freddie in an attempt to paint the bubble as the fault of people interfering with free markets and those silly poor people.

I was an investment banker for 10 years up until 2000 and saw the creation of many financial instruments designed for no other reason other than to avoid taxes, accounting rules and regulations, and to generate huge fees.

Securitizations allowed financial institutions to originate mortgages and have no reciprocity to the risk involved. With the help of complicit rating agencies, that created a huge demand for mortgages of all types and banks like WAMU, Wachovia, Citi, and others reduced lending standards and provide mortgages to people that could not afford them. When people realized they could not afford the payments, they created instruments that had teaser rates that would increase their rates and payments in the future to induce them to come back in and refinance and generate another large fee. All in the interest of pumping more volume through the system and paying obscene near-term bonuses to those in structured finance.

The lack of regulation was the cause, not too much government.

Let’s look at the lack of material refinancings to help dampen the disaster…..well these instruments were sold off into securities with multiple tranches and serviced by banks who no longer had skin in the game. The servicers financial incentives were to keep the portfolio current so foreclosure helped them, yet resulted in no losses to their books. Looking at the investors, an interest rate reduction would have hit all tranches equally, so if you were in the top tiers, where defaults hit you last, your motivation was not to allow a reduction as it would impact your ongoing revenue, while a straight foreclosure would miss your tranche and only hit those at the bottom tiers. Once again, the free market allowed unregulated financial instruments to hurt the economic recovery.

Fannie and Freddies complicity in this all is generally isolated to their role as a large consumer of these securitized instruments, thus increasing the demand for loan originators to provide mortgages, fueling the growing bubble.

I will agree with you on BASEL II, the fact that regulators allowed more creative ways to reduce capital in our financial insitutions was folly and thank goodness the U.S. had minimal exposure to the new rule or TARP would have been much larger. European banks remain less strong in part due to their subscribing to BASEL II and the folly that bank markets regulate themselves.

I have to run and I suspect that over a beer we might actually find a few things we agree upon, like the benefit of a free market, but recent market history has proven a free market must be balanced with appropriate oversight.

Las Vegas Review-Journal Destroys Obama

In one of the most blistering denunciations of Barack Obama ever penned, the Las Vegas Review Journal published an editorial today that excoriated Obama not only for his ineptitude in the Benghazi attack, but also his duplicity afterward and the cooperation of a supine press:

The Obama administration sat by doing nothing for seven hours that night, ignoring calls to dispatch help from our bases in Italy, less than two hours away. It has spent the past seven weeks stretching the story out, engaging in misdirection and deception involving supposed indigenous outrage over an obscure anti-Muslim video, confident that with the aid of a docile press corps this infamous climax to four years of misguided foreign policy can be swept under the rug, at least until after Tuesday’s election … The official explanation for why Obama administration officials watched the attack unfold for seven hours, refusing repeated requests to send the air support and relief forces that sat less than two hours away in Italy? Silence.

The RJ also charged Obama with impotence as he flew off to Las Vegas instead of dealing with the attack.

Prompt and strong action from the White House on Sept. 11 might have saved American lives, as well as America’s reputation as a nation not to be messed with. Weakness and dithering and flying to Las Vegas the next day for celebrity fund-raising parties are somehow better?

The RJ pulled no punches about the Obama Administration‘s efforts to destroy our economy and accused Obama of continually flat-out lying to the American people.

This administration is an embarrassment on foreign policy and incompetent at best on the economy – though a more careful analysis shows what can only be a perverse and willful attempt to destroy our prosperity. Back in January 2008, Barack Obama told the editorial board of the San Francisco Chronicle that under his cap-and-trade plan, “If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them.” He added, “Under my plan … electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.” It was also in 2008 that Mr. Obama’s future Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, famously said it would be necessary to “figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe” – $9 a gallon.

Yet the president now claims he’s in favor of oil development and pipelines, taking credit for increased oil production on private lands where he’s powerless to block it, after he halted the Keystone XL Pipeline and oversaw a 50 percent reduction in oil leases on public lands.

These behaviors go far beyond “spin.” They amount to a pack of lies.

The RJ concluded:

To return to office a narcissistic amateur who seeks to ride this nation’s economy and international esteem to oblivion, like Slim Pickens riding the nuclear bomb to its target at the end of the movie “Dr. Strangelove,” would be disastrous. Candidate Obama said if he couldn’t fix the economy in four years, his would be a one-term presidency.

Mitt Romney is moral, capable and responsible man. Just this once, it’s time to hold Barack Obama to his word. Maybe we can all do something about that, come Tuesday.

The fiery wrath of proud Americans is back.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes gained to 72.2 from a downwardly revised 68.4 in September. It was the highest level since February 2008, though it came in shy of economists’ estimates for 72.5.

Morality, speaking of embarrassing McCarthyite numbskulls…

The task for Alan West’s campaign managers is daunting because he has said so many phenomenally offensive and factually indefensible things. Every time the man opens his mouth there’s a moment of high drama:

Please, Al, just stick to the script. We’re begging you.

Back in July, appearing as he does with hungry regularity on Fox News, West likened Social Security disability benefits to “a form of modern, 21st-century slavery.”

In one cold-hearted breath, the retired Army colonel managed to insult 828,000 fellow veterans under the age of 66 who report receiving disability funds from Social Security. These include both active-duty and retired military.

West’s lame effort to mop up his mess occurred the following night (again on Fox), and featured his now-standard attack on the liberal media for twisting his words.

The recurring migraine for West’s handlers is that his words don’t require any twisting. They just spill out of his head that way, usually in front of a television camera, allowing them to be painfully replayed over and over.

It’s been a gold mine for West’s young Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy, whose most effective campaign ads are a running montage of West’s indelible sound bites.

A favorite is his 2011 speech to a conservative women’s group in which he declared that those who support Planned Parenthood “have been neutering American men and bringing us to the point of this incredible weakness.”

What in the world was West babbling about? Are there mandatory spay clinics for guys?

Who knows what he meant, but it was weirdly fascinating to watch.

He actually went on — and some of this you don’t see in the commercial — to urge his audience “to let them know that we are not going to have our men become subservient . . . because if you don’t, then the debt will continue to grow . . . deficits will continue to grow.”

Oh, now it all makes perfect sense.

Is West insane? That’s a natural question, but the answer is no. He’s just a fringe gasbag who spices his macho act with a little right-wing paranoia.

“You told what I needed to know from your negative comments regarding Rasmussen…guess you will stay away from that question..”

I won’t stay away from that, Stevie. I like Gallup, however, I don’t like their “likely voter” model, it has not been very accurate the past few elections, in fact their “registered voter” model has done better. I think that will be the case this year.

I like Pew, and I like Quinnipiac. When they showed Romney with a good lead back in the middle of October I thought it meant bad news for Obama. They are no longer showing Romney in the lead. I also think PPP skews to the left a bit.

As far as Rasmussen is concerned I have been predicting for months now that they would show Romney with a good size lead then bring their results closer to the other polls near the end. Right now they are showing Romney tied or in the lead in Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Iowa, no other pollster sees all of them in the Romney column. I think Rasmussen is a joke.

APPLESEED

It is sad that all seem to overlook the fact that several years ago, into GWB Jr’s administration, we had some $800 billion currency in circulation…now we have around $2 trillion…that combined with spending 30% beyond what we get are the most, by far security risks…not terroism, not whatever BS is going on in ME, but our $16 trillion debt which no matter who takes office will climb up to at least $20 trillion in next 4-5 years..The $80 billion a year that would be raised by tax increase on 1%, is already offset by new spending….

I appreciate that…I’m in the math business and for the life of me can’t figure if registered voters or likely voters is best metric…then you have cell phones and other means that confuse…

Question to me is how many registered voters will actually vote? Or how many likely voter are unlikely to vote?

I do believe that enough electoral votes are up for grabs that either can win…I wonder how late I’m gonna have to stay up Tuesday evening to get an answer…now way i’m buying into that exit voting crap..

How many jobs have the GOP created during the last four years? How many new jobs has Romney created except for the horse trainer during the last four years? How many American jobs has Bain, Sensata and Delphi shipped off to China while Romney made millions in profits from those companies?
and how much money did the Romneys make that can be traced back to federal auto bailout loans?
Of course we will never know the answer to the last two questions because the King and her Highness decided “we have given you all the information you need”

@ adam What are you babbling about: let’s see another example of APS education: 7.9 is greater than 7.8%, now it is true that 7.9% is less than 8.2% , BUT the 7.9% came AFTER the 7.8% and a higher number (still with me?) means MORE unemployment. I do not see a trend , I see a stable unemployment in the high 7’s. Empiric observation without the determination of the correlation coefficient or standard deviation…..Sheeesh. NOW ,get back to class….

Obama and his rich oil buddies raise the price of gas from $1.87 per gallon to $4 per gallon, but when election time comes around they drop it a few schillings ($3.50/gal) to make the useless idiots “FEEL GOOD”.

The election comes down to this…Democrats are expecting equal or better turnout than in 2008. Won’t happen, economy just not doing well enough to expect that. GOP is expecting equal or better turnout than in 2010. That won’t happen either, Romney is just not conservative enough to get that much enthusiasm. Early voting usually favors Dems, but lots of reports that GOP is showing up early too. I expect polling locations to be steady but not crazy on Tuesday. The election is coming down to Ohio. I foresee Obama leading 263 to 253, with Ohio going undetermined for several days if not weeks due to voting machine and absentee ballot issues. Winner gets the spoils. BTW, that also explains why Romney is in PA, he is hedging bets and trying to win next closest (vote, not just geography) state, so that optimistically he could be ahead 273 to 243 and Ohio would not matter. But I don’t see him pulling it off. My hope is that whoever wins takes both EC and popular vote, do not want another 2000!

“Planned Parenthood keeps abortions lower than they would be otherwise.”…….. are you trying to get a laugh? Abortion clinics, run by Planned Parenthood affiliates, are a high profit buzness. More babies die – more money to Planned Parenthood. That is called free enterprise. The Yet Born have no rights in this country. Abortion is discrimination against the Yet Born’s right to live.

S. Ray — “Didn’t continuity relative to WWII have something to do with FDR’s record term?”

Nope. It’s a popular American myth, though. FDR won his four terms fair and square.

There was talk about *trying* to limit FDR to two terms on the basis that it was somehow ‘traditional’ for Presidents to serve only two terms at most (because of some things Washington, Jefferson and Adams said during their lives), but it wasn’t codified into law until the 22d Amendment was passed in 1947, after FDR had died.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

We discussed this a couple of weeks ago; there was disagreement over how long a President could serve, and someone claimed that eight years was the limit. Technically, it’s ten years — you can be elected as President in your own right twice so long as you didn’t inherit the office as VP (due to the death or incapacitation of the President) and serve as Prez for more than 2 years on the dot.

Had Gerald Ford been elected in 1976, he would have been ineligible to run for a second full term, because he served 29 months of Nixon’s second term.

Well, it took awhile for O’bozo to bad mouth the Tea Party but he did so today:

““Ruling out compromise by pledging to rubberstamp the Tea Party’s agenda as President -– that’s definitely not change,” Obama said. “In fact, that’s exactly the attitude in Washington that needs to go.””

Tea Party? Are they still out there?

Yup. And they will vote.
