Hard-right heros West, Bachmann and King face a test

Three of the most virulently conservative voices in the House are facing tough re-election campaigns. All three are leading, but not by much, and in two of the races the GOP candidates are attempting to separate themselves from the harsh personas that they themselves had manufactured.

U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Fla.

U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Fla.

In Florida, there’s Allen West, who was up by anywhere from one to nine points in October, depending on which poll you believe. As Politico reports:

————————-

“Rep. Allen West’s GOP primary opponent endorsed the controversial Floridian’s Democratic challenger Wednesday and is slamming West.

“As a Republican for over 30 years, I’m embarrassed by the radical fringe that has taken over the party,” Martin County Sheriff Bob Crowder said in a statement released through Democrat Patrick Murphy’s campaign.

“Sadly, Allen West is their poster child, and the hateful, divisive comments he’s made throughout this campaign make it clear to me he’s the wrong choice for our district. I’m endorsing Patrick because he has the right temperament and respect for others – including people he doesn’t agree with. Unlike his opponent, Patrick will be able to work with both parties to make a difference for our community.”

West defeated Crowder in August with almost 75 percent of the vote.”

————————-

bachmann_rect-460x307

In Minnesota, there’s Michele Bachmann, who’s running in a district redrawn to be safe for a Republican. Even with that advantage and a huge campaign treasury, she’s only up by somewhere between two and six points, depending on which October poll you believe. And as the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports, the previously strident Bachmann has adopted a different strategy for keeping her job, trying to portray herself as moderate, responsible and bipartisan.

————————-

“I’ve worked with Democrats across the aisle to get a lot of things done and it’s important we do that,” Bachmann said (in a Thursday debate). “I’m a very independent person.” She used the debate to tout the times she had bucked her own party, saying “I didn’t believe George Bush … that we were looking at financial Armageddon,” and stressing her work with Democrats on the St. Croix River bridge.”

————————-

image3919499x_370x278

And in Iowa, U.S. Rep. Steve King is taking much the same survival tack to hold onto his lead of two to seven percentage points in his newly drawn district:

————————-

“Iowa State University political science professor Steffen Schmidt said the race has proven tighter than expected.

“They’ve both been pretty smart in how they’ve run their campaigns,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt said King has “adjusted his campaign rhetoric somewhat,” and tacked away from far right positions that were popular among voters in the former 5th congressional district.

“He hasn’t really run on that pure, true tea party conservative agenda,” Schmidt said. “That is probably smart, because the district is more complicated now. You’re not going to appeal as much with your hard-core positions on things like illegal immigration to a new bunch of voters in parts of the district who are moderate.”

————————-

In the end, all three GOP candidates may win their races, but the narrowness of their apparent margins and — in the case of Bachmann and King — the necessity to tack back toward the center to stay viable says a lot about the mood of the American voter.

For me, Allen West is a serious case of respecting the office or rank, but not respecting the man.

I respect West’s Army service and rank, and I respect him as a Congressman.

But when it comes to him as a person, he falls somewhere below a wad of gum on the sole of my shoe on the Respect-O-Meter.

The fact that the 3 are barely hanging on as incumbents already suggests their problems, especially given the voting tendencies of their districts.

How does a “fringe” candidate outpoll one who likely considers himself more “moderate” by almost 3 to 1? Sounds like a sore loser to me. Maybe the sheriff should stick to enforcing current laws, rather than trying to help make new ones.

I hope that the voters in Steve King’s new “complicated” district kick that bigot out of congress. It’s disgusting to see these pathetic, spineless wimps pander to a crowd.

The most disturbing part of the Bachmann debate was how she made such an absurd statement with total conviction. She didn’t even change her expression when the audience was laughing loudly at her.

Demographics in America are not standing still. The far-right Republican base is steadily shrinking with each passing year. Smart Republicans will see the hand writeing on the wall an adjust their rhetoric accordingly. Flip-flop Romney, master of the 180, has shown his fellow Republicans how it’s done.

Maybe, someday, we’ll find a way to put some honesty and moral fiber in Republican politicians. And, maybe pigs will fly, too.

I don’t know anything about the Sheriff, but given West’s public comments of late, I think that anyone would be hard-pressed to seriously call him ‘mainstream.’ When you assert that fifty-odd members of Congress are Commies and that you know who they are, you’re in serious Joe McCarthy territory.

The country has grown weary of the Tea Bag line. As I figured when they came into office they have had nothing but a negative effect on the policies of our country as evidenced by the inability of the Congress to get anything done. The 7% approval rating can be largely attributed to the Teabagger’s agenda of stalemating any legislative progress.

Now it’s election time and it’s funny how many of them have turned heels to get re-elected realizing their polarizing views have gotten them nowhere. This is the reality that those on the right fail to understand.

The hard line espoused by the right is the cause for the countries continued slowdown. In spite of the roadblocks President Obama has still managed to make progress.Get on board Teapeople or your going to get left behind.

So, we are to believe that all three of these candidates are going to suffer a loss with a one to nine percent advantage in the polls. West is a true American and should carry his district easily. First black man to have ever won a seat in this district of mostly white people. Liberals just can’t stand it when a black person is a conservative. Must be an Uncle Tom or perhaps an Oreo. His message must resonate with someone…..his constituents seem to like him even though Bookman doesn’t and they seem to be the ones that will send him back to Congress. Close election? Yeah, right.

Unlike the nonsensical childish response from Senior Digits, the fact is that the generally everyone is entitled to their day in court and consititutional questions, which is how the AJC is reporting the case as being framed, are some of the most serious questions to be addressed. That does not suggest for a minute that the party appealing has a winning case or that the substantial weight of the law is not against them.

Decatur said that as it waited for clarification, “we became aware that Seaside Heights had received the assistance they needed from other sources. To be clear, at no time were our crews ‘turned away’ from the utility in Seaside Heights.”

Decatur said it tried to contact other areas that needed help, but “based on the uncertainty of union requirements that we could not agree to and the uncertainty of whether a resolution could be reached, we ultimately” decided to return the crew to Alabama.

“There have been reports that a nonunion crew was turned away from work in New Jersey,” Hill said. “At this stage, it is not clear who is alleged to have turned the crew away and the company that employs the affected workers has denied the claim.”

Earlier reports indicated two other Alabama utilities — Huntsville Utilities and Joe Wheeler Cooperative — were turned away from New Jersey due to union discrimination. However, those utilities have since denied those reports.

“It is unfortunate that at a time when skilled line workers are working around the clock to help devastated communities, sketchy reports should cast a pall over these efforts,” Hill said. “The real story is that our members and others are working side by side to help people in New Jersey and all affected states get their power back and recover from the effects of the storm.”

When it comes to Russia, Mitt Romney has been brash, at one point labeling Russia “without question our number one geopolitical foe” and “a geopolitical adversary.” He’s also repeatedly lashed out at President Obama for allegedly being weak on Russia. But according to a New York Times report, Matt Romney is trying to convince Russia that the tough talk is just talk:

Worth repeating:

Washington Post Editorial – “THE CHOICE” By Charles Krauthammer – 11/1/12 :

“An Obama second term means that the movement toward European-style social democracy continues, in part by legislation, in part by executive decree. The American experiment — the more individualistic, energetic, innovative, risk-taking model of democratic governance — continues to recede, yielding to the supervised life of the entitlement state.

If Obama loses, however, his presidency becomes a historical parenthesis, a passing interlude of overreaching hyper-liberalism, rejected by a center-right country that is 80 percent nonliberal.”

It will be great and yes, very patriotic, to get rid of all these incalcitrants who possess less than high school level of professionalism from the US Congress.
They scream and incite unnecessary anti-government sentiments on mere speculations, rumor, and cooked up theories. They have no leadership skills, and won’t hesitate to get into the gutter in a heartbeat with the birthers, conspiracy theorists, right-wing nutcases, and frankly, plain idiots to create the impression that that they are “fighting” for the people.

The likes of Bachmann, King, and West are a big reason why the US Congress is so polarized and can’t get things done. I think Cantor is another “culprit” and needs to be voted out.

It also says a lot about the fact that portraying oneself as “principled without engaging in compromise” has never been real strength, only a kind of caricatured performance of what strength is. It is interesting that that kind of outward “strength” bluster – also valued and overtly displayed by George W. Bush and Mitt Romney – is what has gathered many supporters within the Republican Party.

Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Hillary Clinton have authentic strength because their strength springs from innate resources within. At least half of the nation’s population can see that. My hope is that, as time evolves, more Americans will expand their awareness of what genuine strength entails. Mother Teresa had authentic strength although she was a small, fragile, older woman who preferred deeds to words. Pilot C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger, who landed safely his crippled airplane on the Hudson River a couple of years ago, thereby saving his crew and passengers, had authentic strength. George Washington, who had an aversion to partisan politics, embodied such genuine strength that he carried the weight of winning the Revolutionary War on his shoulders for eight years, and he would have been executed as a traitor to Britain, had he lost that war against the formidable and outnumbered British navy and army. After he had lead others in winning that war and after he had been hailed throughout the nation and world for his fortitude and character, Washington laid down his power to return to civilian life. The Father of Our Country modeled genuine strength, and the value of the “sevant leader,” for his peers and for leaders of future generations.

My prayer is that that half of this nation, who still see the bluster of not compromising with others – either at home or abroad – will, in the coming months and years, come to understand what genuine strength entails and will recognize that intransigence is never strength, only weakness disguised as strength.

The Obama Administration is now pivoting to JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! :-)

jconservative

November 2nd, 2012
2:15 pm

At 18 years of age I became fascinated with politics. That was 1960 and Kennedy v Nixon. In that year the conversation from conservatives, of which I was one, was that the nation was becoming more “conservative.” But looking back over the last 52 years I cannot say that was more than a hope. But that conversation continued for the next 5 decades. And you still hear it today, “The nation is becoming more conservative”.

Republicans, none of whom in my opinion were conservative, did occupy the White House 28 of the 52 years. And if Obama wins next week, the 56 year score between Democrats and Republicans will be 28 – 28. The score for conservatives in that 56 year period will be Zero.

So we come to the 2012 election between a “liberal” Democrat and a “very moderate” Republican.
And what does the “very moderate” Republican do the first week in October? He moves substantially to the left on all issues! Obviously, Romney and his handlers (family?) believed that as moderate as they were, they we not “liberal” enough to win the election. So the move to the left.

The question on the table: are we conservatives, like the dinosaurs, headed for extinction?

He violated direct orders, he knew he violated direct orders and he took his own soldiers down with him. In his confession, West admits that he fired his gun in anger, and that “the man inside me probably did want to inflict hurt” upon the suspect.

In other words, West exhibited bad judgment under stress. He lost it, and no, I would not want to be under the command of an officer who loses it under stress and exposes his own troops to danger by his actions.

I have been a card-carrying Republican all my life. A signed picture of President Dwight Eisenhower hangs over my desk. I’m a veteran of the regular US army.
But today’s Republican party is no longer my Republican party. Back in the day, the GOP was run by East Coast elite of well-educated, sophisticated internationalists who exercised America’s great power with restraint.

Alas, they have been replaced by rural politicians from the deep south and west with no knowledge of the outside world and no sense of history or culture. America’s closet fascist neocons write the GOP’s foreign policies.

The moderate Republican party of yesteryear is dead, the big tent no longer exists. The beginning of the end of the Republican party came in during the 2010 election on the unsuspecting Tea Party’s back. Bachmann and King were already in Congress along with many others who kept their private beliefs under wraps because they weren’t in the majority. Allen West, Joe Walsh and many many others came in and joined the other extremist like Bachmann and King during the 2010 election. Now for the last two years these Extremist have the majority control of Congress along with the billionaires and corporate backing.

The Republican Party is all about control and power over the people. You only have to look at the bills this congress has tried to pass over the past two years to see what there up too. Why any thinking person would vote for any of the current extremist Congressmen or Women just boggles the mind.

I see your point though, the strict legislation controlling guns in this country that keep adolescents Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold (Columbine), James Holmes (Batman movie shooter), Wade Page (SikhTemple), Seung-Hui Cho (VT)….from acquiring guns has really been effective.

Being able to purchase a gun legally doesn’t mean you won’t do something criminal with the weapon. No guns= no gun violence. Sounds pretty simple.

“McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — A CIA security team rushed to the U.S. consulate in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi less than 25 minutes after receiving the first call that the mission was under attack, while a second squad was dispatched by air from the capital, Tripoli, according to a timeline released on Thursday by U.S. intelligence officials.

The timeline is the most detailed accounting to date of the U.S. response to the attack on the consulate and was released to rebut news reports that U.S. officials had delayed a rescue.

“The officials on the ground in Benghazi responded to the situation . . . as quickly and as effectively as possible,” said a senior intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity.”

Illegal immigrant seeks to scrap Georgia driver license law

By Jeremy Redmon

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

An illegal immigrant from Mexico is challenging the constitutionality of the state’s driver license law in a case the Georgia Supreme Court is set to hear Monday.

Fernando Castillo-Solis says the law — which requires motorists who have lived in Georgia for 30 days or more to get a state-issued license before driving — discriminates against illegal immigrants.

At issue is a part of the law that says motorists can’t be convicted of driving without a license if they can later present their licenses in court. Since illegal immigrants are ineligible for Georgia licenses, they don’t have the same protection.

“Undocumented aliens are affected by the denial of an absolute defense,” Castillo-Solis’ attorney wrote in a court brief.

Castillo-Solis’ case stems from a 2010 traffic stop in Gwinnett County, where he was charged with driving without a license and failing to register his vehicle. Castillo-Solis, a Mexican citizen who has resided illegally in Georgia for more than 10 years, sought in a lower court to get the state driver license law thrown out. The court rejected his request. With his trial still pending, Castillo-Solis is now appealing to the Supreme Court.

kayaker 71 reported Alabama power crews being turned away from Sandy repairs because of unions.

I can’t link to it, but I’ll tell you Southern Company’s internal website reports more than 2,300 employees on storm duty throughout the northeast as of this morning. Southern Company has sent line crews, tree crews, damage assessors and support staff. So if they’re being turned away in some areas, they’re apparently being welcomed with no trouble in other areas.

Yes, I understand you are liberal, left wing, “Progressive”-great word there, hides the fact the two fascist regimes this country have had were Wilson and FDR, so use of adjectives to describe anyone right of you in pejorative terms is somewhat normal. It’s normally everyone to the “right” of liberals that are lunatics, right?

Hey Recon and USMC

No reassessment based upon the updated intel from that latest report? (3:21)

“According to the timeline, the first call for help from the consulate was received at the CIA’s nearby Benghazi headquarters – referred to as a diplomatic annex by U.S. officials – at around 9:40 p.m., which is when the attack began.

“Fewer than 25 minutes later, a security team left the annex for the mission,” said the timeline, which added that the group spent about 25 minutes trying to take out militants firing heavy weapons as it fought its way to the walled compound and then entered it under heavy fire.

At 11:11 p.m., according to the timeline, an unmanned surveillance drone arrived over the complex while the CIA security team, which comprised about six officers, rounded up the approximately 30 staff members on the consulate premises and prepared to move them to the annex.”

Even though it directly refutes Fox’s claim that the CIA personnel on the ground were told to stand down?

Is that what Marines do? Hold onto their initial assessments, even when they’ve been shown to be based on erroneous reporting?

And the answer to that question appears to be “divert, divert, divert…. YES!”

@GM

As usual, last Thursday’s weekly jobless claims data were revised worse than originally reported. Every week, without fail, the BLS reports data that it knows is not true; the numbers are too low so as to make the employment situation look better than reality. The following week, like Thursday morning, the data is quietly revised worse and a new data point is erroneously released…soon to be “corrected” at the proper time.

This happens every week, but nobody seems to care.

Thursday’s ADP report was supposed to be 155,000 but turned out to be 158,000 – beating expectations. With a “revised” methodology, traders are now expecting a good number for Friday’s monthly employment situation data.

Bloomberg said the following – “Market Consensus before announcement

Special note: ADP has switched to a new economic consultant to revamp the data–Moody’s. Essentially, there is no track record for how well the revised history really predicts. Going back however, ADP private payroll employment for September posted at 162,000 based on its old methodology. The BLS number for private payrolls in the employment situation report came in at 104,000.”

Let’s hope this “revised” model is better than the last model and by a lot. Why? Because the previous version overstated private job creation by 419,000 over the last 12-months.

Maybe the new model will overstate private job creation by 1-million?

GM, this is the research that is available for that Job number you bring up as positive…

John PodhoretzWe learned yesterday that last year Mitt Romney paid $1.9 million in taxes on an income of $14 million — and gave $4 million to charity.

The year before, he made $21.6 million, paid $3 million in taxes and gave $3 million to charity.

So, to recap: Mitt Romney has, in the past two years, paid almost $5 million in taxes while giving away $7 million. And, as he said, he has paid the taxes he was supposed to pay according to the laws of the United States, which is all that is required — legally, morally and practically — of anyone.

If you’ve been reading my columns for the past couple of years, you know I’m perfectly capable of being critical of Romney. I did so the other day, and radio host Mark Levin called me a “trash-mouther” who was “giving aid and comfort to Obama.”

APWith open arms: Mitt Romney has given $7 million to charity the last two years, while paying $5 million in taxes. But the release of these tax records leaves no doubt about one thing: Mitt Romney is an extraordinarily, remarkably, astonishingly generous man. A good man. Maybe even a great man.

That is all. There is no “but.” Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant, stupid or a liar.

It’s important to talk about how charitable deductions work, because there is great confusion about them and their effect on the amount people pay in tax as a result.

You will hear it said, by people who are either ignorant or have an axe to grind, that the charitable deduction is a tax shelter. It is anything but.

Shelters are investments that work to protect money from being taxed by the government. In effect, every dollar in them is put there either so that it can earn money or so that it can be used to lower a person’s tax burden.

Now consider the dollar given to charity. If you’re Mitt Romney, your dollar would be taxed at a rate of 35 percent by the federal government — the highest rate. When you give that dollar to charity, you are, in effect, excused from paying 35 cents of it to the government.

But here’s the key: You don’t get the other 65 cents back.

If you simply kept that dollar for yourself and paid tax on it, you’d still have 65 cents of it in the bank.

By giving that dollar away to charity, you lose that 65 cents entirely. It goes to the charity, as does the 35 cents you’d have paid to the IRS.

It’s likely, given these numbers, that over the past 20 years the Romneys have donated more than $50 million to charity. Do the math: Under current tax law, if he’d kept the money, he’d have $30 million more than he has now. (That’s extremely inexact, but you get the idea.)

Benny. I’ve go treal bad news for you. McCarthyism and the witch hunts died a shameful and horrific death sixty years ago.

Quit trying to breathe life into that Republican corpse. You neocons look like slimy and blithering idiots for doing so.

Speaking of replacing some of the more awful human beings in the US Congress…

Arizona Tea Party Candidate Jeff Flake’s hostile position on Veterans issues has him in the fight of his life. Vietnam Veteran and VoteVets PAC endorsed candidate Richard Carmona, who is tied in the latest polling, and up 45-41 in their internal polling that was released.

Indiana’s Joe Donnelly is starting to pull away from Tea Party candidate, Richard Mourdock, who you recall said pregnancy caused by rape was God’s will.

Another enemy of veterans, Virginia’s George Allen is falling farther and farther behind, in his race against Tim Kaine.

North Dakotans have noted how supportive Heidi Heitkamp has been of Veterans, while her Senate opponent, Rick Berg, has consistently voted against Veterans – even against giving them the right to take Veterans Day off from work!

Missouri’s Claire McCaskill, has always been there for Veterans. Right now, polling is showing her as the favorite in her race against Todd Akin, ranging from a lead of 2 points to 6 points.

Illinois and Hawaii – In some of the most satisfying news, I’m happy to report that both Tammy Duckworth and Tulsi Gabbard, Iraq War Veterans, are running strong races, and if they win, will become the first female combat Veterans ever elected to Congress. Neither race is over, and no one is declaring victory, by any means, but polling does look good. Your support has been crucial to both of them, so I felt it was important to let you know how things were going in their races. Additionally, in Illinois, VoteVets-endorsed Veteran, Bill Enyart is in a neck-and-neck race for Congress, but even a recent Republican-leaning poll showed him up by 5, which is great news!

Go veterans! Throw the cowards out and put more of our own in there!

Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor, that’s fitting for you. However, given the level of stupidity of many of the far right wing fanatical posts, it’s impossible to tell who is being sarcastic and who is actually that stupid.

I mean let’s take you for instance. Aren’t you one of those who seem to think thta Obama was supposed to teleport himself magically to Libya armed with an M60 and go all Rambo on the folks attacking the embassy? Give that thought pattern how is one to know how much more ignorant you could be?

Nope, I didn’t expect Obama to do anything in Libya, but, it would have helped if he had gotten the hell out of the way and let real men do their jobs! Of course, this coming from sports like you that give Obama credit for killing Bin Laden!

The Obama administration sat by doing nothing for seven hours that night, ignoring calls to dispatch help from our bases in Italy, less than two hours away. It has spent the past seven weeks stretching the story out, engaging in misdirection and deception involving supposed indigenous outrage over an obscure anti-Muslim video, confident that with the aid of a docile press corps this infamous climax to four years of misguided foreign policy can be swept under the rug, at least until after Tuesday’s election … The official explanation for why Obama administration officials watched the attack unfold for seven hours, refusing repeated requests to send the air support and relief forces that sat less than two hours away in Italy? Silence.

“The law specifically says that anyone with a disability is allowed to have assistance from anyone that they choose,” said Terri Robertson, director of the Cumberland County Board of Elections. “As long as they can communicate to us in some way that they need assistance and who they wish to have assistance from, the law allows it.”

In 2010, Gary Bartlett, the state elections director, issued a memo to county boards clarifying the law.

“In the absence of evidence of systematic fraud,” Bartlett wrote, “the presumption should work in favor of the opportunity of the voter to vote.”

But not when Mighty Jim Crow has spoken!

And what if this person had voted for Romney, would our uber-patriot have his panties in such a wad then?

-We Are Better Off Than Four Years Ago-
At this time four years ago the Dow Jones Average was about where it is now. But by December 31st of 2008, before president Obama took office the Dow was at 8800 and sinking fast and it quickly sank to half today’s level before we began to turn this crisis around. George W Bush had to send out $700 checks to everybody in America to keep us from bottoming out. How Socialist is that?
So to those in business who say ‘am I better off now than I was four years ago?’ I say, if you like being pulled out of the frying pan and put in the window to cool, then yes, you are better off now.

To bailout haters. This American economy might have crashed and burned without those bailouts and they were bi-partisan. Period. Where would we be if we had let our auto industry disappear as Governor Romney suggested?

Unemployment has stabilized and is coming down and our nation is safer without Bin Laden.
We’re not doing great, yet. But we’re coming back from the deepest hole this country has seen since the Great Depression!

We are better off now and President Obama truly deserves four more years.

Nothing has changed much since 2010 except we are further in debt, our unemployment is still about 8% massaged and we have 4 fewer American citizens in service to this country. BTW, those latte drinking New Yorkers are not happy campers and as this cluster goes forward, the weekend comes with colder weather and more gas lines, no power, no food, etc., crowded hotels and lots of out of town marathoners adding to the mix. indigo — ““I’m a disabled veteran” – I’m sorry to hear that. Thank you for your service.”

You and the conclusion you jumped to can both take a flying leap.

“Actually, no you won’t” – Actually, yes I will.”

Actually, no you won’t.

“I’m not in uniform now. However, those who are have learned to keep mouth shut if they have my views since the powers that be won’t tolerate any other viewpoints. Political correctness rules in the Military and civilian world.”

It’s not a matter of tolerating viewpoints. It’s a matter of basic fairness. There were people who talked like you in the 40s and who resisted racial integration of the military — and I’m sure they felt that what was happening to the military then was just as wrong as what you apparently feel is happening to the military *now.* But those feelings are irrelevant. Integrating gays into the military is — just as integrating racially was — a matter of fairness and of eliminating discrimination. If your viewpoint is that discrimination should be *institutionalized,* then I’m afraid you’re not going to get anywhere.

“As far as the cut and run personality goes” – If you don’t have this personality why did you assume I do?”

More to the point, why did *you* assume that *I* do?

““No, it’s not. Too bad for you” – Yes, it is. Ignorance, either deliberate or unintenional, about basic human physical and mental nature, won’t go away just because you get on a politically correct soapbox.”

You can call it political correctness all you want, but that doesn’t make it so. Integrating the military is a matter of reducing institutionalized discrimination, and you’re not going to make a very cogent case simply by claiming it’s ‘politically correct.’ It works in too many countries for you to be able to explain it away so easily.

Obama and Bush both used Bush’s TARP fund to bailout GM.

Also, the taxpayer investment could be satisfied at today’s stock price considering all of the lost tax revenue and unemployment claims the government would have had to pay out. Plus the loss of the many businesses that would have gone under with GM that also pay taxes and employ thousands. All in all, a great investment.

Wow, Romney pummeled by the Washington Post, again.

You know, considering the paper’s editorial board views on a whole host of issues it wouldn’t have been too terribly hard for Romney to have secured their endorsement. But given his staggering cynicism, it just wasn’t to be. Now they’re twisting the knife in him.

THROUGH ALL THE flip-flops, there has been one consistency in the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney: a contempt for the electorate.

How else to explain his refusal to disclose essential information? Defying recent bipartisan tradition, he failed to release the names of his bundlers — the high rollers who collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations. He never provided sufficient tax returns to show voters how he became rich.
How, other than an assumption that voters are too dim to remember what Mr. Romney has said across the years and months, to account for his breathtaking ideological shifts? He was a friend of immigrants, then a scourge of immigrants, then again a friend. He was a Kissingerian foreign policy realist, then a McCain-like hawk, then a purveyor of peace. He pioneered Obamacare, he detested Obamacare, then he found elements in it to cherish. Assault weapons were bad, then good. Abortion was okay, then bad. Climate change was an urgent problem; then, not so much. Hurricane cleanup was a job for the states, until it was once again a job for the feds.

The answer: none.

So believe me, once the election passes and the chance to embarrass Obama is no longer an issue, you’re not going to have any more success getting a hearing from your GOP pals than you are right now from the Obama/Clinton people.

Neither wing of the American ruling elite wants its schemes with Al Qaeda affiliates coming out into the open too much lest the whole lid be blown off of the entire War on Terror rationale and our entire efforts in countries like Afghanistan. Trust me.

Why not just go back to your job? Sounds like you are able to work now. You know, Republicans hate people like you. They call you “moocher” and all sorts of other insults.

Quite remarkable that those who never offer proof themselves will shrilly demand it from others.

I don’t work, I collect a check from the government every month. I get up every day around 9:00AM, and I usually watch the morning news shows on Fox. Some days I go hit some golf balls around, or ride my bike. I hit the gym 4-5 times a week, and take my kid to school and pick him up every day. I talked to my doctor the other day about this, and he said if I am not careful, I may become a democrat. I like my doctor.

You don’t seriously mean that, do you, really? Republicans haven’t stooped to the level of dishonesty by Dems? Republicans are the kings, czars, and dukes of dishonesty, and never failing to burn the midnight oil studying ways to perfect it. So that’s a little rich don’t ya think?

I’m doing no such thing. I’m simply pointing out your hypocritical demand for proof when you yourself are one of the worst offenders on this blog when it comes to making up outrageous political charges without presenting any sort of supporting proof.

Given your past behavior, why should anyone oblige *you* with proof?

“the charge was Republicans have been co-operating with Al Qaeda I hate to call some one a liar so I nicely ask for proof.”

I shall be watching in the future to how *you* respond when *you* are ‘nicely asked for proof.’

Really?

What you’re describing sounds like short- or long-term disability, which wouldn’t necessarily come with the ‘government check’ you’re crowing about.

How, exactly, do you merit a *government* check as opposed to a check from a disability insurer or your employer?

It appears you’ve missed my point.

I was pointing out the fact that cooperation with Al Qaeda, and in the early days proto-Al Qaeda jihadists, runs so deeply in our nation’s foreign policy – mostly covert – that it’s not only next to impossible to differentiate white party is more invested in it, it’s just pointless to try to do so. The whole point is that it’s a BI-PARTISAN thing and illustrates a core of corruption at the heart of our entire foreign policy.

His story smells funny to me. My wife’s been an HR professional for many, many years, and the only way he could be getting a *government* check that I’m aware of is via workers’ comp — but that’s limited by duration and it’s a state program, not Federal. I’ll ask my wife this weekend, but I don’t think there IS a Federal disability program available to most workers — just to Federal employees.

I think Pete may be yanking our collective chain.

At any rate, I’m out. All be well and drive safely.

JHMama, as a former flight attendant – way back in the day – had to look up that airline code. Way back in the day, maybe Souix City didn’t even have an airport yet. Or maybe UAL didn’t fly there, but I suspect one of “the guys” would have mentioned it as they enjoyed making us “young things” blush. Thanks for the chuckle. :)

I know it’s late, but this here is quite essential if you ask me. This should be born in mind in all subsequent discussion of the Benghazi events

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/02/benghazi-media-news-cia-request_n_2066651.html?1351889703

News Outlets Held Back Detail Of Benghazi Attack At CIA’s Request

NEW YORK — U.S. intelligence officials, speaking on a not-for-attribution basis, provided reporters Thursday with the most detailed explanation yet of the CIA’s presence in Benghazi, Libya, and the agency’s response to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack, while also identifying the two former Navy SEALs killed that night as being employed by the CIA.

But some news organizations, including the Associated Press, The New York Times and The Washington Post, already knew that the two former SEALs — Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty — were working for the CIA and had agreed not to publish the information at the government’s request

..

Over the past six weeks, the Benghazi compound has been primarily described as a consulate or diplomatic mission, even though it’s now being reported that just seven of the more than 30 people evacuated from the city were working for the State Department. As The Wall Street Journal wrote Thursday night, “the U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation.”

And now it’s clear the former SEALs killed that night were not part of a security detail for U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who also died in the attack, but were working for the CIA — a fact that, if presented earlier, might have helped reframe the murky narrative from an attack on a diplomatic mission to an attack on a location primarily used for intelligence gathering.

Michele Bachmann Outspends Opponent Jim Graves 12-To-1, Still At Risk Of Losing

* Tea Party favorite is divisive, even within her party

* Minnesota Congressional race most expensive in nation

* Opponent says she ignored district for White House run

By David Bailey

ST. CLOUD, Minn., Nov 2 (Reuters) – U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann, known for controversial comments during her Republican presidential nomination bid, faces a tough congressional election challenge on Tuesday in a Minnesota district that should be friendly to conservatives.

The race in the sprawling Minnesota 6th Congressional District has been the nation’s most expensive in both money raised and spent by Bachmann and Democratic challenger Jim Graves, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The two candidates have raised a total of $22.7 million and spent $20.8, the center reported.

Bachmann, a champion of Tea Party backers of smaller government and conservative social issues such as opposition to abortion and gay rights, has outspent Graves by more than twelve-to-one in seeking election to a fourth term in Congress.

But her remarks, including an insistence on a link between an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Muslim Brotherhood, have been denounced by some in her own party and may be wearing on voters, experts said.

Defeating Bachmann would be a significant victory for Democrats, who are fighting an uphill battle nationally to gain the 25 seats needed to retake the U.S. House majority.

Her opponent lacks name recognition, but has used Bachmann’s presidential campaigning for half of her two-year congressional term to accuse her of pursing personal ambition over the needs of her constituents.

Fred,

I couldn’t let your comment go without responding. Not that is is any of your business…

I had a stroke this past May that effected both my right and left occipital lobe. I have lost my right side peripheral vision, and I have some short term memory issues. In other words, I have no vision on my right side.

I can’t drive, and if I could, I would probably forget where I was going. Do I want to go back to work? Bad…real bad. My life now consists of going to doctors offices and exercising. I want to work, I have been working since I was 12 years old, and I am 48 now. I had a discussion with my occupational therapist a few weeks ago, and she says that I am not ready yet for work. I volunteer at food banks, and have also done some yard work (for free) for some older people in my neighborhood. I am doing my best to stay busy until I get the go-ahead to return to work. As soon as I get cleared by the doc to return to work, I will sleep in the parking lot at the office just so I can be the first one in the office.

I have told my friends, if you hate going to work every day, try not going for a few months.
